Are the rules for the use of class lights and flags, on the lead locomotive, set by individual railroads or are the rules set by the FRA?

Evening gray and morning red brings down rain upon his head."

And, tomorrow morning, I set out for Prince George (which, I understand) was named for King George III of England. I expect to have the roof of a coach over my head. The next, I will go on to Jasper, again with a coach roof over my head. Friday, I head for Vancouver, in a compartment (which VIA calls a "cabin for two, just the same as it calls a bedroom a "cabin for two"--and sells both for the same price (and sells duplex roomettes and roomettes ("cabins for one") at the same price, also).
Please don't be confused by my parentheses within parentheses.

Beautiful sunrise this morning, red, orange and purple, kind of like a fall sunset, bit in reverse.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Oh, I will not get to see Carl and Pat this trip, and Mookie says she will not bother to get her stilts out .
I am enjoying my stay in Prince Rupert--seeing Cowtown, and trying out several different restaurants. Up early Wednesday morning, and leave here for the day's run to Prince George.
work not so busy today..have plenty to do here at home.Ns had empties uptown and a train in the siding when I left.Welcome to fall tonight.
stay safe

Johnny, unless your trip takes you toward Grand Rapids, you probably won't be seeing us that weekend. There are artistic things, quiltistic things, logistic things, and other things going on that weekend...in the Land of No Trains. It's been quiet for me for the past week, including the trip to Michigan we took last weekend. There is plenty of work to do; I'm restructuring my file pages for the East Erie Commercial Railroad to make it easier to see former numbers for the cars we know about. I'd get more done if it weren't for the distracting view of our backyard from my work-station. It is a nice day to be inside, looking out at a yard that appears much warmer than it really is. There are about a half-dozen squirrels, and a chipmunk or two, scurrying around (I'm keeping the door locked in case they become desperate in their search for nuts!). There was a female cardinal perched on our gazing ball. No wind, clear sky...I'll be outside later today, I'm pretty sure. One thing I discovered while messing around with my new iPhone...it not only takes still shots and videos, it can do panoramic shots, and slo-mo and time-lapse videos. I'm hoping I can (a) use both of these features while railfanning: maybe grab more information off faster trains with the slo-mo, and give quicker "tours" of our stretch of railroad with the time-lapse; and (b) find them again when I need them!

Johnny - you will have a very quiet pass through Lincoln - our beloved football team is playing out of town that weekend, so the crowd should be scarce.
Might be a little frost on the punkin' so wear your warm nitecap!

I am still enjoying my travels in Canada, despite having something happen in my laptop a week ago which makes it impossible for me to use it to get on line. Right now, I am in a hotel in Prince Rupert, B.C, waiting for Wednesday to come so I can start back to Jasper--where I will spend a night before going back to Vancouver.
The trip from Jasper to here was in two parts--to Prince George one day and on to Prince Rupert the next---with dodging many CN freights. We had at least one meet involving two westbounds and one eastbound, which had us backing past the switch to the south track after the two eatbounds ran by and then running around the westbound, which also had stopped on the north track (around here, CN does not number the tracks, but names them).
Late Friday morning, I boarded the ferry for Port Hardy and had a fair trip (no cabin was available, so I sat up during the night) down, and left there yesterday afternoon, to arrive here 22 hours later--in a cabin so I was able to stretch my weary bones out.
I never saw a whale really out of water, but I did see many spouts, and caught, with my eyes, a tailfin disappearing beneath the water.
While I was waiting to board in Port Hardy, I had a brief conversation with one of the navigation officers, and he told me I should ask for a tour of the bridge--and, just before lunch today one of the other people on board asked me if I would like a tour; I said yes, and was taken up, along with a lady and her son, after lunch and did see some of the works. The communication system between the bridge and the engine room looks much like the old system which was mechanical and rang a bell in the engine room which a change in speed/direction was needed.
It's raining here now.
As some of you may have noticed, one of our young contributors, northwest, and I met briefly in Bellingham as I was on my way up to Seattle nine days ago.
Mookie, I still plan to come through Lincoln the first Thursday night in October.
Saturday was really nice, if a bit cool. Jacket weather all day, although some holdouts were still seen in shorts.
Sunday, on the other hand started out nice, but got very wet very fast. That's not so bad for the engineer (in this case me), aside from dealing with wheel slip (and I did). The crew that had to work outside, on the other hand, got soaked.
They'll dry, and I've been there before.
The colors in the central Adirondacks are really starting to come into their own. I thought they might be a little dull, but the are really perking up now. Peak will probably be within a week to ten days.
I'm working this week, during the week. I expect to have some busy trains!
Next weekend I'll be manning the railroad's booth at the model train show in Massena. If anyone happens by that way, stop in and say hi!

Spent all day yesterday painting on the outside of my house, up and down the ladder. Today, my youngest son and I went on a rugged 2 hour hike. I don't think my eyelids hurt right now, but I'll swear that darn near every other part of my body does.
ma nature is cooling us off quick. good week lot's of sunshine according to the guessers.back to work tomorrow.

Went fishing again today. Lots of bait disappeared, but no fish. End of season smart!
Did have a good time watching all the hangovers wandering around an RV area. Had a great football game yesterday and a record 91+K crowd. Then the leftover entertainment for today. That was amusing.
Also caught about 9-10 trains coming and going. Always something to see there. Got the Sunday papers read and then a short nap. Can't beat that with a stick!
CShaveRR That rat, a can of tuna, and a saucer of milk would do a great job of feeding the little kiddies.Oops, sorry...I thought you said kitties!

Ms. Mookie might not appreciate that
Norm48327 How would you interpret this headline? "Rat sighting prompts menu change at Marysville school" Sure sounds like it's open to different interpretations to me. Found it on a Seattle news site.

Ns had a train in the siding.Getting chores done here at home.Tomorrow it's time to visit the corn city(Deshler) again.
Dating myself, but I sort of miss those days. If I could go back to them but have all the conveniences of today.......... In some ways life was easier then.
switch7frg Does anyone recall when his son was born? Shortly after he was born Spike told folks on t. v. that he would be called "Spikes little Tack". I wonder where he is today.

Spike Jones, Jr., shows up on TV in January of 1952, so probably he showed up before that. His IMDB page indicates that he has been doing TV producing for the past 14 years or so, mostly award shows and the like.
I remember watching "The Spike Jones" show in the mid-fifties and thought it was pretty funny. During that time the funniest song they did was a horse race bit about a horse named "Beetlebaum." There is no goofy comedy like that these days that I have seen. Thank goodness for DVDs of Stan and Ollie, Bud and Lou and Harpo, Chico and Groucho.
Ns had 2 trains waiting when I left work.Csx ran some trains by as I was working in town after Matt got home. The ND&W tracks are looking better.Must be fall though the weeds are turning light brown.Tomorrow is Friday.
Chuck, I remember Spike very well and his band of cohorts. Does anyone recall when his son was born? Shortly after he was born Spike told folks on t. v. that he would be called "Spikes little Tack". I wonder where he is today. The likes of comedy has changed so much. Stan and Ollie sure could get a laugh real easy. The antics of the Keystone Cops was funny , can you imagine who the genius was who came up with all the ideas for those movies.

Wow! We are having our warm snap today. 78 but with humidity above 55%. Next couple of days will be 85-90 and same humidity before it starts cooling back down.
Busy day - fishing this am, drugstore shopping, grocery shopping, bought me some new glasses, which I barely wear, but need them for distance and then Chinese for supper. And home in time for Judge Judy!
I am exhausted and warm! But weekend is now free to do whatever we decide. (Well, ok - never free, but always reasonable!)
I was able to escape Texas after basic - but did do two stints at "don't shoot 'em, Chanute 'em," which is now closed. The mayor of Rantoul was once quoted as saying that closing the base was the best thing that ever happened to the town. Industry moved in after the close, including at least one major trucking company.
The former IC mainline through town has long since been reduced to one track, and the branches east and west are gone now, too, I believe.
Getting ready for our second "cold snap" of the year. Won't be long before we'll be looking forward to "warm snaps..."
Norm48327 MurrayGood morning from San Angelo. Drove up here to take care of some business. Its 71and partly cloudy...rain all around us...bad flooding in Austin. I need toast... :p I was stationed at "Goodbuddy Airplane Station" moons ago. I wouldn't recognize the town today.

That's neat to hear Norm!!
I trained there as an analyst (Former 202X0 - Now 1N4X1) and was also an instructor at the school house back in the day!
Just getting in from an EMS call. Gonna hit the sack again, but hit the 'Net for a few, including a visit to the Netherlands railcam. Three trains (including a meet at the crossing with a passenger train and an autorack train), and two fire trucks (which weren't running "lights and siren"), not to mention numerous bikes and scooters.
I hear my pillow beckoning.
ChuckCobleigh Mookie Perfect! And for the younger set, Spike Jones is the one in the white/straw? hat. All I ever saw of him was his picture on the album cover. Never realized there is video of his antics! Now for the Keystone Kops! From Spike Jones' IMDB biography page: "Got his nickname from his dad's co-workers on the Southern Pacific Railroad."
