MC, what length cars does the Brand X consultant expect to run on the track? 40 foot?

They don't care, it's in the way of their highway to their development. I can't wait to see the collision with the PUC railroad engineer.

Falcon perched on the bird bath looking in the kitchen window this morning.

That must be one big bird bath...  Oh - wait, you're talking about the bird, not the car...

Decent weekend on the railroad - plenty of riders and a lot of people taking a paddle down the river followed by a train ride back.  Hadn't scheduled the weekend as Mom had been talking of coming east, but she didn't make the trip.  So I was bonus help for the crews, which was a good thing since the crews both days included a trainman trainee.

Even travelled down the road a bit on Saturday night for a fire department all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner.  I was full after the first plateful.  No seconds for this kid.

Backed into the driveway at home tonight so I could clean out the back of the truck (it's always neater when you leave than when you get back).  Instead I ended up running two EMS calls.  Both appear to have been a mix of hot weather and alcohol...

Time for a show, some relaxing (with perhaps a little rain mixed in - a batch of rain is on the horizon), and bed.

I presume that the consultant will have some facts of railroad life explained to him, including the statement that the railroad is running certain equipment which cannot move over what he proposes, and, perhaps, he will say something like, "Oh, I had no idea; what changes will have to be made in my plan?"

Considering we told him twice what the AREMA suggested standard was and why we had concerns, the consultant and their thick-headed highway dept. client may be talking to Board of Registration for PE's & PLS's. if the PUC cannot get their attention.

Have had to use the terms vertical bounce/ "compression bounce" more in the last week than the past few years. Scary - this guy may be asking "want fries with that?'  soon- Watch out Mooks...

Wasn't bad - just unfortunate. The local TV commercials are  saying basically "we're still here".

(1) Having trouble competing w/ RGRY, C&TS, Georgetown Loop and D&SNG all in the area.

(2) Railroad runs north out of Leadville towards Climax. ("Southern" from its C&S heritage, once was odd 4-rail track)

(3) Cut-off from the rest of the world at US-24 in Leadville. (and the UP Tennessee Pass Sub. is mothballed even if it managed to cross the road)

To our Cedar Rapids IA area forum contingent, how are things that way?  I received a message saying there is a "service interruption" over in the CR area.  Something about flooding issues and a washout along the east/west main line.  No word on how bad or when things will open back up.

Wouldn't surprise me- Highway 151 near Fairfax got washed out at one low spot.  Pavement fell into hole when truck drove over it.  Other washouts/water over road all over the place around here.  Areas north of town got 3-5" overnight (I got 1.88" here), and more expected this afternoon.

We're getting the weather right now.  Pat observed that for the month of June we've had 9.3 inches of rain.  That was earlier today--we're over 10 now, for sure!  It shouldn't be this dark out for another two hours yet!

I spread the rest of the grass seed over bare spots earlier today.  Either we'll get results or our backyard neighbors will thank us!

We accomplished a lot of the stuff we've needed to.  The insurance company looks over our car tomorrow morning (and the body shop can take it right in!), we start the paperwork for a new home equity loan (the old one expires next year), and I won't need to visit the cardiologist before September (well, that's the earliest they can fit me in!).    During our loan discussion, we found out our credit score for the first time ever.  No worries here.

I celebrated our triumphs today by taking a little train ride.  I found one of the newer stack cars I'd been looking for (the ones built by Freight Car America, with the truss-type tub sides), and was able to be ready for the car when the train left the yard and went slowly by me in Elmhurst.  A few other promising sightings were made, too.  That, and some e-mail information from RAILINC will make me a busy camper again tomorrow!

This afternoon we had one of the most violent storms I've experienced since we moved into our neighborhood 15 years ago.  My wind gauge registered a gust of 36.9 MPH, but I'm sure it was double that out in the open.  Our neighbor to the east's large Maple lost about half of its top branches, and our neighbor to the west lost several sections of wooden fence which fell into our yard.  The power was out for several hours.  The rain from that storm and another one which followed a couple of hours later boosted the 24-hour total to 4.31".  Jeff, if UP had trouble yesterday, they're definitely having more today.
