Looks like a baseball game above Sir C's home.  I can see the wind up from here.  This may terrorize a lot of states before it is done!

Survey crew in Ft Collins bumped into a LARGE kittycat today.

Kitty didn't meow, didn't growl....It ROARED!

Steel toed-boots suddenly became track shoes. (Nikes don't fail me now!!)

Topo survey might be a few days late.Hmm

MC, it is well that it was not a striped kittycat that you bumped into and you annoyed it. #5 hit one of those sometime early this morning (I think it was when I woke, briefly about two). Had we been on time, and gotten into Salt Lake City last night and not a 5:21 this morning, we probably would have missed it.

Mookie, I do not know what time we went through Lincoln Monday night, but we were an hour late at Ottumwa--and three hours late getting into Denver. We lost more time there because the UP was doing some work on the track at the Big Ten Curve, and we had to wait until that company told us we could leave. I went to sleep before we reached Glenwood Springs, and woke as we were coming in to Provo. #6 was also late, for she was standing in the station here when we arrived--the first time I have seen two passenger trains in Salt Lake City at the same time.

I did enjoy eating with Carl; when we left the station very few people were in the first class lounge, but when we got back there were more people than I ever seen in there, and I was not able to log on to the Wifi (too many other users?).

Now, two weeks of mail and newspaper to catch up on.

Jen.....Glad to hear all went well in your area.

We too have been in a muggy, hot oven now for several days.  Seems it's continuing again today....Light threat is over a wide area for severe weather.  Noted 79 degrees when I first looked early this morning.

Southern Michigan got washed this afternoon. A good gully washer just passed through. Not bad enough to cause any damage though.

Joe - zoo food is excellent.  They serve animal crackers!

Norm - more rain working up west of us.  Have no clue where it will end up, but speculate it will be heading north at least for awhile.

A little over 4/10" last night, and some areas got wind damage.  We escaped.  Looks like we may get more tonight, but I'm not sure it'll be as bad as last night.

We've gotten over three inches of rain in the past 24 hours.  Lots of fog hanging around this morning, will probably be washed away by more rain.  Pat and I want to catch a concert in Millennium Park this evening (Eighth Blackbird), and I think we should bring umbrellas and towels.

The book I've been working on for a friend of mine is finally edited; I'll mail it today.  The Lombard Historical Society's newsletter is in the process of being printed and collated; that may also mail today...by tomorrow, for sure.

We were working at the Historical Society offices yesterday when the first rain hit.  Skies got very dark, then there was thunder and lightning (not in that order, obviously), and it let go.  Then I heard a noise that sounded a lot like a freight train.  Pat heard it, too.  However, tornadoes do not sound two longs, a short, and a long for crossings.

CShaveRR
Then I heard a noise that sounded a lot like a freight train.

I was walking back from our banquet hall last night after letting in a group having a meeting there.  As I reached the end of my driveway, I started to hear a loud rushing sound, then noticed a nearby rooftop with large wet spots.  The raindrops were huge, and I managed to get under my porch roof before it really let loose.  Those were some big raindrops.

I once had a friend who described such rain as "coming down in #2 washtubs."

....Our tornado sirens blasted mid afternoon.  Checked the TV and the emergency alert service was on, and we were under a tornado warning....One sited about 6 or 7 miles south west of here, and it showed amateur pic. on Indy TV stations.....Don't know if it got down to the ground or not....But the movement took it just under {south} of us.  Been very lucky here....

Evening all......

Interesting week so far, had a super single drive tire explode Tuesday, six hours later, road service had me up and running again. Them things make a heck of a racket when they blow......

Had our shop in Burleson, TX, change the rim out today, (different offset, only rim the guy had), shop now wants to do bodily injury to said road service tech. Rim fit so tightly on hub, took three guys a half hour to remove. Also noticed that road service put the tire on backwards. Hard to find good, trained help these days.....

Mud, usually when I hear a big cat roar, it's stuffed in a long nose Pete, and has 8 inch stacks with no mufflers. You still get the he!! out of the way........

Decent weekend - good weather, reasonable ridership.  We were late getting on on the one scheduled trip due to a finicky 63YO RS3 (had to use a different loco), but picked up a half dozen riders in the half hour we were late.

After that we had a special "charter" for a bus group of 40.  Ended up with more like 55 passengers on that run.

Sunday I got to sit in the cab and pull levers...

Is it just me and where I live or is the service industry going straight down the tubes?  Not only in courtesy, but in mistakes overall.  Pick an industry - seems like they are all lacking! Dumbing down?

Ms La Mook - I think it's the digitization of America that's partly responsible (or maybe heavily responsible).

Interpersonal communication is disappearing - witness any group of kids walking through the mall with their noses buried in their phones - probably texting each other.

And courtesy to customers thus becomes a lost art.

Then there's the cash registers that figure the change due - never offer to round your remittance to an even amount after the register is done computing - the clerk probably won't be able to figure it out.

And we can't forget "instant gratification."  Many folks don't have the patience to courteously handle your request - they just want you to pick something out and be done with it...

You get what you pay for.  We, as a society, treat service personnel as the bottom rung of society (both in terms of respect and wages), then act shocked when they don't bend over backwards for us?   Why is this such a shock to anyone?

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.

Zug - they don't need to bend - just do their job properly.  Filling an order correctly isn't brain surgery.  Delivering a paper on a porch isn't difficult, but you probably do need to get out of  your car before you throw it.  Running a debit card and getting the correct "ticket" and amount.  Mistakes I understand.  Now it is becoming business as usual.

Joe, I hope you had a happy birthday yesterday!  We were on the road, so I didn't get much time here.  As it is, I'm on the McWifi, nine miles from nowhere (our cottage, with no internet, no TV, and no cell service, qualifies as "nowhere"!).

On the way up, I walked an entire train of ISGX coal gons, and got their original numbers by reading the ACI labels (at lest the labels of the 60 or so cars that had been relettered and renumbered).  That was Sunday...I won't even see another track before Wednesday.

What has happened to pride in your job, no matter the pay?

Is it easy to have pride when one can barely afford to put food on the table after working all day?

Or if they are treated like dirt, respect-wise, at their low-paying jobs.

One should have pride, yes, but only if there is something to be proud of.

It's been fun.  But it isn't much fun anymore.   Signing off for now.
