Woo Hoo! Spring is upon us! 13 above zero. Soon our delivery drivers will be hoping for deliveries near the colleges. When it warms up like this , they all want to be the first to spot co-eds in bikinis sunbathing.
Thanks to Chris / CopCarSS for my avatar.
Cannonball - send plane ticket, please! Or 65 degrees - either will do!
Tree - someone told me many years ago that traveling the interstate - they give you 10 and you take ten (over speed limit). Someone is not with us any more, either.

Things are slowly returning to normal here (or to the south, where they got all the snow). Not a cloud in the sky, and temps will be above freezing over the weekend.
In one case, the detour almost proved worse than the closed road would have been, as many trucks couldn't get over a hill in one of the villages. Of course one reason the Interstate was closed was because so many people think that because the speed limit sign says "65" they can do 65, so they do - right into the ditch.
Still have a few things to chip out of the remnants of the ice storm - like the fuel fill for our banquet hall, still under a couple of feet of icy snow.
On to other projects!

Walt; how about an invite to Ariz. . Right now the sun is hiding behind thin clouds. It is shining up so it will be brighter and warm up to 65 deg. to get warmer in the day to about the mid 70s. and a gentle breeze . Some times it is hard to live in the mountains. HEH HEH. Down on the "flat" it is warmer right now. Enough of this nonsense for now. However the Ethenol spill in Phx. is all swept up with hardly a mention in the "Newsies" speak.
Later on down the road for now, Cannonball
Y6bs evergreen in my mind
Had to go dig this out of the snow!
Breaking up the excitement of brutal cold by going to have biters polished. Then they will sparkle when I smile in the bright sunshine this weekend!
morning
things getting better. Local officials dropped us to a level 2 emergency. Roads are still ice covered. Will be back to work tomorrow.
stay safe

blue streak 1 . For Tuesday morning it is even worse. Yesterday morning Tuesday was to be 20. last night was going to be 15. This morning 10 degrees and tonight's prediction for Tuesday morning is 5. Do not like this trend. + some snow flurries as well

Cannot believe the weather guessers. More than 72 hours before they got it right. Atlanta went to 5F this morning. That is not fair cannot bash them. We did better at 9.2F this morning. Many persons are suffering with no water due to frozen pipes as homes are not insulated properly. No electric shortages but one city is running short of natural gas. no explanation yet ?
Paul of Covington - Nyah, nyah-nyah, nyaaah, nyah!
Thank you! That was fun.
I am going to save that and use it on Houston Ed one of these days!
Tree - we have available and in most hands, all the electronics you could possibly use for communication and yet people still need to get out and roam around! Why can't they stay home, line up all their devices in front of them and talk to anyone in the world that they need to - or have a big party!
DUH!
Joe - it is nice to have a big family. Always a shelter available! I was an only child. I stayed home - a lot!
BC - 32 here now - mittens on, mittens off. NO WIND! Perfect!
We're dug out, driven out, eaten out, shopped out, shoveled again, and back in, now that the temperature is above zero. Joe, there's hope!
Should I prepare for a parade of CSX at Dolton Junction or somewhere?Don't know, though, how much more snow is in the forecast. That's what caused the problems here; the low temps were just the icing (!) on the cake.

some counties have gone down to a level 2,we are still a level 3.Big sis stayed overnight due to drifting on the roads.(she is a nurse) She left in daylight but said the roads were still single lane and drifting bad. Matt is closed again tomorrow. Maw nature is going tot haw out a little by the weekend according to the guessers. Hopefully Csx can thaw out as well.

Well enough towels have been thrown in to fill a warehouse.
Still lots of chatter on the scanner - mostly police still chasing down cars off the road, etc.
The wrecker companies are straight out - the sheriff's dispatcher keeps telling her patrols that none are available.
Besides the interstate, several busy local roads are closed due to zero visibility and the number of stuck vehicles. Until the lake effect belt moves south (or dissipates), they're probably going to stay there.
As we've noted before, these bands can be very tightly defined. It's cloudy here now, but I had blue skies earlier, yet just a few miles away it's whiteout conditions.
If you're looking at it in the next few hours, the NWS radar will let you see exactly what I mean:

If it's inside the "belt," odds are it's cancelled (school, etc). Even the mall is throwing in the towel.
About 2 0r 3 weeks ago I responded to all this talk of cold weather to say that our air conditioner here in Louisiana was running at midnight. Me and my big mouth! This morning's low was a record 15 degrees, and the temp right now is 31 deg. I had to run out yesterday to buy a couple of big tarps to cover the citrus trees. Feel free to go "Nyah, nyah-nyah, nyaaah, nyah!"
Anyway, HAPPY POLAR VORTEX, everyone.

A band of lake effect crossed us last night, leaving maybe two inches of snow in the driveway. The bank kept moving south, and has settled just south of Watertown, forcing the closure of I-81 through the county. It was already technically closed, but no barriers had been put up. Now it's definitely closed, with at least 50 cars in one area unable to clear.
I'm getting snippets of sun, but the temp is just +7F, with wind chills dropping down into the minus teens.
Later this week, we're back on the temperature roller coaster, back above freezing.
still a level 3 here in Nw Ohio. Sis came to stay after work. She is a nurse and didn't want to go home after dark. Guessers say it should ease up tomorrow. Csx has trains parked on the Garrett sub. Amtrak trains are stuck west of Chicago. They are getting people on busses to get them to Chicago.
Question for weather guessers.
1. Is there a chance that the polar vortex will return later this winter ? Remember what happened to the German army when they invaded the USSR
2. Since the vortex is moving away from the US what part of the northern hemisphere might expect it to strike ?
3. Will it be contained to approximately the artic circle most likely ?
Would it be the cold has caused many persons to stay indoors and not drive. In the past 2 days gasoline has dropped 12 cents from New Years.
Wonder if the power companies have been able to meet the power demand ? This is a good reason to keep those coal power plants at least in reserve. Will more unit coal trains pick up to replenish reserves?
Going from zero to mid-fifties tomorrow and then slowly back down to the mid thirties at the end of the week.
Hope some of you to the east get it. Miss Ellie has got to be getting a little claustrophobic in those snow trenches. My guys would love to give her a few of the doggie sweaters not needed to warm up these black furballs with attitude, jaws & paws (aka-"scottitude").
I didn't pull up Alaska's temps., but bet they are warmer than us. As Quentin said this is about the coldest this area has seen for 20 years.
Some of you all experience this stuff every year, we don't get it that often.
Right now here in Louisville, it's about -3 with a wind chill of about -20.
Tomorrow and Wed. are supposed to be colder.........
Being Crazy, keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel, has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!
....What a night....Wasn't easy.
Lost power for 6 hrs....{total electric home}
Wonderful neighbor with closed in body Jeep, got us out of here....{My pet Ella and I}, to a place that had Power...
Learned the power was restored at midnight...{it was our street only}....I was told by the electric Co., it would be Wed. the 8th before they could promise power. {What a shock that caused}....!
Learned a tree limb touched a power line on our street....and it was cut away or removed someway, and the wires were still connected, so they threw the circuit breaker and bingo, the power was back on....{I'm thinking this was the process to restoring our power}....
This was with a foot of new snow on top of what we all ready had.....and blustering winds drifting snow...and of course bitter cold. It's not been above "0" all day...and right now it's 9.9 below "0".
In a few days the jet stream is to push this stuff back where it belongs...and Pacific air once again can flow past us, bringing the situation back to the normal range for this time of the year.
I certainly didn't want to be any further than my mail box today....Didn't matter anyway, no paper or mail delievered. This was {and still is}, critical, deadly stuff.....
This was the most critial Arctic blast we've had thru here in 20 years. The last one that occured then, we were in Florida.
Quentin
mudchickenLooks like your guy is qualified now to run between Denver and Cheyenne in Chinook season.
He hauls for one of the companies that has the can deposit machines in stores here, so even if he's "cubed out" he's carrying more air than material...
Down to +21F. Pretty sure we'll see single digits (or less) overnight.
tree68 One of our firemen was hauling an empty box trailer up from Syracuse - crossing the bridge over Oneida Lake a gust of wind tipped his trailer enough to lift the wheels off the road a foot. The wind has pretty much subsided now.

"Polar Vortex"? - It's not even qualified as a hard winter yet. Wimps!
2AM - +47F
6AM - +47F
10AM - +26F
Still holding around +26F, but it'll drop more later. Most of the snow is staying south, although we just got a dusting. At least the rain stopped before the temps dropped.
Ran three calls back-to-back this morning - a pump detail for a neighboring department, a mutual aid chimney fire, and another pump detail due to power being out on that road.
Just have to sit back and see what Mother Nature provides for the rest of the day...
We're going to get hit with the cold tonight. Temp's been dropping all day.
Norm
Oh Joy! It's warming up. At 6:30 this morning, it was -20 below, with a wind chill of -41 below. The radio just said it's up to -15 below, with a wind chill of -41 below. The guys out in the yard say they don't feel much warmer. Just for fun, I checked the weather where I lived as a kid- Chugiak, Alaska. It's 32 above there, heading for a high of 34 above, with a chance of rain.. Yeah- liquid rain!
Joe - checked Antarctica and it is 9 below with flurries. Sez "Frigid".....
still under a level 3.can get out to the road but it is a sheet of solid ice.Csx is shut down on the garrett sub. Strange that in Alaska it's going to be warmer than here.
