I received an interesting email note from Amtrak seven minutes before #5 was due to arrive here (I had planned to start a trip last night, but I had to cancel it because of medical problems). I was told that the train was running about an hour late. If it had been that I had not canceled the trip, I would already have been at the station if I had not already checked on the progress of the train, and would not have gotten the note until the next afternoon, when I again had access to the internet.
Yesterday was a nice day--good weather, and the new pastor whom we had called to serve my church was installed by five other pastors from the area (three of whom I knew). We are expecting rain and some snow in the valley--and a few feet of snow in the mountains tomorrow--excellent!

MC, you missed the snow here. I am not sure as to when it started, but was after my paper was delivered, which is usually before six on weekday mornings (I slept late today, having neglected telling my clock to wake me), and my paper was covered. Except for a narrow band against the back fence, it seems to be all melted now.

Mother Nature is washing all the gunk off our cars today- free of charge!

I kinda like the naming thing. It helps separate the weather systems, rather than "the next system," and after that "another system." It's got more personality than "storm 14-0123."
Besides, we can always look back and say, "Well, [storm name] sure was a bust."
Of course, TWC's stock in trade is bad weather. At least a significant storm system gets that other dorky programming off the air for a while.

They took that dorky programming off the air. Kind of sucks because I was really getting into that "Highway thru Hell" show. Looks like it is on Hulu, though.

It will be interesting to see what we wake up to here. I'm ready to go nowhere (my volunteer chore was deferred already; maybe the Senior Breakfast will be next and we'll be home free. Shopping was done today. Forecasters say the projected totals are changing by the hour as the storm closes in...then they tell us that it could be anywhere from one to nine inches of snow. I'm rooting for a strong north wind to keep the worst of it south of us (as long as my buddy in Decatur is home on "spring" break!). Of course, a northerly wind means that Gary and Michigan City will be hit again. And they're saying that by tomorrow afternoon the sun will be shining again!

It started spitting snow here right on schedule (0800). And has gotten progressively worse.
They promise us that it will continue to do so. The band of snow runs clear back to Indianapolis and is "training" over us. We may just see that 18" + inches yet, but the way the wind is blowing, that'll probably mean 3-4' drifts next to bare surfaces....
As long as they let me stay home and not have to deal with folks who don't have the sense to stay home, all will be good. The snowblower is fueled and ready to go.
We got maybe three inches of very heavy snow overnight. Now we're getting glimpses of sun. Shoveling of sidewalks and driveway will take place after lunch.Tonight we are expected to descend to the low teens again, which will make things a little more solid before a couple of days with thawing temperatures.
Ms. Mookie, spring and nice weather is forthcoming soon in your area. The weather here in the mtns. just over the ridgeline is sunny and clear. This makes me not miss cold winters from my past when slush splashes over your boot tops as a car sprays the slush on you . Cold wind don't help matters much either. Stand closer to the stove to help warm you. Just kidding you.

We had a little more snow yesterday afternoon--while the sun was shining! Many, many, years ago, I was told that the significance of rain and sunshine at the same time is that it will rain again at the same time the next day. Will it snow again this afternoon? Snowbird (ski resort) received about six feet yesterday; Alta, which is higher, received about five feet. Snow in the mountains--water for bathing in the valley, come summer!

As for me, I had to cancel a trip I had planned to start Sunday night, taking #5 to Sacramento--The surgery which I endured three weeks ago has certain followups which I hope will end soon. It is hoped that the procedure has reduced the probability of recurring infection in my pelvic region (avoid radiation if it is at all possible; damage can come years later). About ten minutes before #5 was to come in, Amtrak sent me an email note advising me that the train was running late--and I would have already been at the station by then if I had not checked, either through Julie or the website, for the latest information. Also, since I had planned to take #14 from San Jose to Portland last night, I received another note, a few minutes before #14 was due, that that train was running late. Apparently, it is supposed that I have a smartphone which keeps me up on such matters.
I may have to cancel my visit to my college alumni gathering, also, for further surgery is in the offing. I am hoping to see my oldest brother's wife (she will be 94 this coming May) on that trip. But, we shall see.

Not a common occurrence hereabouts. In fact, we were discussing here the other day that most of the houses here in the hamlet have metal roofs.
Chimney fires are still a problem - we were out on one just a few weeks ago.
The number of folks burning wood has tapered off since the heyday of wood stoves. That's not to say that you don't see piles of firewood, but the pellet folks are doing a booming business these days. The outdoor furnaces are also becoming common - and they have to have a fair sized chimney, per state code.
Getting things done around the house today, first coat of polyurethane on all the trim and the new door for our extra bedroom. Next time I come home, the door, trim, and paneling on the walls come out, closet gets refinished, and new door and trim gets installed, along with new paint and a new light fixture.....
Annual doctor's appointment is this afternoon, followed by another tomorrow with DOT doctor to get medical card renewed. Hopefully, no issues.....
Company had a bad wreck this morning in Atlanta, one of our drivers missed the curve at the end of a ramp and shot out in front of a JB Hunt truck, which promptly cut the trailer in half. JB didn't make it, they had to send the whole cab to the coroner, it was that mangled........

"Byron got a foot"--my first thought, thinking of George Gordon, Lord Byron, was, "Was this replacing his club foot?" No, I never read any of his poetry; I simply knew of him.
Our snowfall didn't live up to forecasts, but it was hard to tell as the wind drifted it all up. My driveway remained clear (except the ends, which did drift).
A young driver encountered something he hadn't encountered before this morning - hard packed snow on the road. Ended up off the road with his car on its roof.
Time to go buy the supplies for the chicken barbeque.
We have had almost no snow, but a lot of the SUV's here have landed on their tops. Must be a new switch on the dashboard?
