A belated happy, Randy.  Still gotta arrange a meet when you're up this way sometime.

The winter storm is here, in force.  Snowing consistently - not inches per hour, but still accumulating, and with a decent wind, which means it's drifting as well.  Means an early start in the morning to make sure our banquet hall is accessible to all those who care to join us for breakfast, and to visit with Santa.

The radar isn't showing anything that looks like a break, so we're probably in it until dawn, anyhow.

Time for bed.

Sitting out the storm in Youngstown, OH, got up at 0030 today and beat it to here. About two to three inches on the ground here now......

BTW, since nobody has mentioned it on here, the 12th was my 34th......

Randy - you need to holler when it is close and we will all sing to you.  Fortunately, you won't be able to hear it.  But belated Happy Birthday.  Seems I have lots of company in December.

I also am willing to give the 7th to anyone that will take it.  Free to a good home.  Actually to any home!

.....Finally, the threat of snow, provided us with some...and still snowing.  measured about 3" overnight, and it continues, perhaps until about six this evening, according to reports.

I shall stay in today.  No point of trying to go out when one doesn't need to.

Hopefully, church tomorrow, then to the Sunday meal at a local restaurant.

Warmer here today....Now 35.  Warmest we've seen for  some time.  Almost no wind.  Has been a rather wet snow.  Just the right temp. for that.

Best wishes to all preparing for the seasonal events.

Trivia:  Do I see a different method of inserting an image with the text.....?

A couple of successful nights on the Polar Express.  Home for other events for the rest of the weekend.

Our latest lake effect event left me with all of two inches of the white stuff in the driveway.

North Redfield, on the other hand, got six feet of fluffy powder.  Lowville had about 30" and it still showed last night as I drove through.  It's not often you see 8-10" of snow sitting on top of streetlights and the like...

It was also cold overnight.  When I left Utica the mercury was hovering just above the zero F mark.  As I drove north it kept dropping, to a low of -14F.  As I got closer to the lake, things warmed up again - to zero...

Off to the local library to play the conductor for their showing of "Polar Express."

And I got a pie to make for a get-together tonight.

Someone whispered in my ears that everyone might be able to make snow angels for Christmas.

Too bad that person will be one wing short.  Oops

You need snow for Xmas - I will work on it!  Mischief

Weather dummies say that’s a maybe!

But then again, they can’t tell me if it will rain tomorrow!

We hit a low of seven degrees last night.  Today, it is above freezing.  Tomorrow, rain, sleet, ice, and snow are predicted, kind of scary weather, fitting for Friday the 13th.  Wink

To whom are you writing? We have enough snow already. And for the people who live lower down than we, they have smog which the snow helps along. When the valley is socked in, the ski resorts enjoy warmer day time temperatures than the people in the valley do.

It is interesting: St. George, which is in the southwest corner of Utah, is in the area known as "Dixie," because its climate is warmer than ours, and some people go there for the winter.. However, St. George has been colder than Salt Lake this month; I do not doubt that those migratory people wish that they had stayed home.

Yup, that indeed looks mighty cold and snowy….the swamp on the other hand is in the mid 40s…

  Above zero?

Yup, and will be in the lower to mid 60s by Sunday.

Thats life in the swamp.

Oh sure, but it's a dry heat.

Norm, our temperature is supposed to go to five, too...but on the other side of zero.  It's two above right now.

The name of the young lady in the linked article/picture indicates she's probably a cousin (or married to one).  "North Redfield" is right about where the old family homestead was located...

And they just closed the Interstate through that area...

NWS Buffalo posted on FB that the band actually starts at Lake Michigan, and extends through to Vermont, some 800 miles...

It was fourteen degrees when I left work last night.  Highs just above freezing for the next five days are expected.  Tonight, single digit temperatures are expected.  The local folks are bemoaning the cold air.  After five years in northern Wisconsin and twenty plus years in northern Illinois, it is just "Winter" to me. Had some errands to run, including picking up a couple of items at the mall, so I ate lunch there, too.

Who sits down at the next table but a non-relative who's related to people I'm related to, and who I know.  (She's the wife of my aunt's (by marriage) brother...)

Turns out she'd been able to save a treasure trove of family pictures from certain destruction.  I was able to identify one person in a group picture (Aunt Edith would be around 120YO if she was still alive), as well as a few that I definitely knew.

I'll be getting my hands on quite a few of them to add to the family geneology (I'll scan them and return the originals).

Pretty cool for a chance meeting.

Got an update on my cousin (her nephew), who is dealing with mouth cancer.  Apparently he's doing as well as can be expected, which is a good thing.

Larry, I had a wonderful surprise this past spring, when a relative of whom I had never known sent me an email note asking if I knew anything about a man who was my father's father. It turned out that she is the great-granddaughter of my grandfather's sister, and I hope to visit her and her husband early next summer. I was able to send her some extensive information concerning the Degges ancestry (one of my brothers and his wife had done quite a bit of  research on our Northern Neck, Virginia, ancestors, including finding a chart which goes back to the time of Richard II of England). She sent me some pictures which I was able to identify, and some which I was not able to identify.

We are still submitting to sub-freezing temperatures, with the prospect of a daytime high above freezing late this week or early next week. At least, we have not had the morning temperature down to 1 degree, as it was in St. George (in the area known as "Dixie") a day or two ago. There are areas northeast of  here with temperatures below zero, and the backside of the Wasatch and the ski resorts also have very low temperatures.

Where I live is high enough so that the smog that comes with high pressure cells does not reach up to us. When I was in the hospital two weeks ago, I was in the smog zone--it's wonderful to be back home!

Carl, I lived in suburban Chicago for over twenty years.  I used to park behind MACCO in Des Plaines and watch METRA, UP, CP, and WC.  I have spent time at Elmhurst's train station.  My first encounter with WSOR was following a train from Fox Lake, Illinois, to Janesville, Wisconsin.  Every time you post a report in the Lounge, I very much miss all the action up there.  Unfortunately, lately my visits to see Dad take up all my time.  When I visit Mom's grave I usually catch sight of a train or two.  Makes me wonder if that was the Universe's plan to ease my sorrow when she left us last year.
