zugmann We can't even get any relief at night. 75+ degrees, no breeze, and humidity thick enough to swim. Needless to say (though I will anyway) Gatorade and water consumption has reached epic levels.

Good EveningWe got clobbered but good this evening...three lightning strikes within a minute of each other...two got some pine trees next to us and the third struck our house...I checked the house and found that our 2" wide braided copper wire had taken the hit and left a few scorch marks around the surrounding grass!!! As well...we got 4" of rain from this thing and another inch of marble sized to golf ball sized hail Right now it is still grumbling and raining out....77 feeling like 87....bit of a difference here...

Hello Mookie. Yes I am north of Montana, or if you want to get a bit more specific, about 250 miles NNW of Great Falls. Long ago, if southern Albertans wanted to go to a US city, they went to Great Falls, even though it was smaller than Calgary. In the very early days of the oil industry here(pre-1955), when local oilmen wanted to see their bosses and investors in Houston, the quickest way to do it was to drive to Great Falls (not that difficult) and get into a DC-3 or similar to make the rest of the trip. Amazingly, from today's perspective, it was the only way to make the trip in the same day. About 16-18 hours. Today the population of Calgary is just a bit larger than the State of Montana.
BOC is not that far north of the EDIT: second most easterly of the Great Lakes, still a considerable distance, by US standards, west of the recent tragedy in Lac-Mégantic, QC.
The City of Calgary has finally released damage costs and estimated repair times for the damage from the recent flooding. Some of the lower priority infrastructure might not be back to pre-flood condition for most of the next decade. Just east of me, a major east/west artery that runs alongside the Bow River is pretty banged up and will be rough riding for a while. In my immediate area things are pretty much fixed up and my building has returned to normal.
I am inside trying without much luck to stay cool, as we have a Humidex situation today. It is 79°, felling like 86º. I keep expecting a thunderstorm weather warning to come soon, but nothing yet.
Time for supper.

I am geographically duh - so I have to take each poster and place them on the map and then try to remember a few details. I only found some of the posters (like Joe) in Ohio a few years ago. I was like a lot of people in California - they know Nebraska is somewhere on the other side of Nevada. But I keep practicing.
I would love some of the posters weather. This year is a little different for us, but "normally" we run about 95 to 103 during latter July and first half of August. Humidity is generally around 50-65% during the day. And no rain after about the 15th of July until September. That was normal. So far, we run about high 80's low 90's with humidity about 40+ during the day - (goes much higher after dark). So send rain and cooler temps. Kansas isn't sharing right now!
Had a young man tangle with a train just outside Lincoln today. Not too many details yet, but train was stopped and he reached under the wheels to get his dog. Train started and sounds like damage was pretty severe. I have such respect for trains - even stopped that I don't even want to park too close to them. Too bad he didn't have respect. Long time recovering to learn that lesson. No word on the dog.
Back to my maps!
Apparently quite busy here at home in my absence - a storm came through and brought down several trees, plus other storm related problems.
We encountered storm problems on our Utica run today (I was engineer) - trees down in several locations, including three in a quarter-mile section. Set us back almost 45 minutes from our scheduled arrival in Thendara. The rest of the day went well, though.
Thursday was a real pain - neither of our air-conditioned coaches had working air conditioners. Turned out the problems were minor, but I'm not one to chance making things worse if I can help it. And it was hot and humid to boot.
Friday we had the air conditioning back, and things went well. One party of canoers had done the trip three years ago, and recognized me as the conductor last time they were here (some were from Las Vegas). So pictures were in order...
Sunday I have off, although I may mow the lawn. Ahhhhhhhh.

Good Evening..Our BBQ went really nicely...butterflied leg of lamb with some grilled asparagus with twice baked potatoes with herbed sour cream...mmmm....om num num num...lol! All that pine wood is going towards a few pieces of furniture... Going to get showered up and off to bed for the night...Have a good evening!!
good sunday morning
humidity is gone and a beautiful morning. Breakfast is all set.Matt comes home from camping today. Back to work tonight.
Good Morning
Sunny with high near 75 today...feeling like 90...
Getting the Lair Of Doom actually finished off this fine morning...it is now a somewhat cleaner space...wonder what might fall out of the black hole to fill its pace besides my recording studio now...
SJ, that would be a great wall hanging for you--a railroad map of North America, showing cities, with pins that you could stick in to show the locations of Forum friends, and perhaps others for neat spots that you know about (Cajon, Tehachapi, Rochelle, North Platte, etc.), color-coded for places you've been, places you'd like to go, etc.

BC - no available walls.
Hey Mudchicken - if asparagus dies off, you can plant lamb in its place. Another "favorite" of mine. Tangled with some as a kid and it was closer to goat than lamb. Smell of it cooking was enough for me.
80 degrees with high 88 - but humidity 62% right now. Very uncomfortable. Guess we got the cooler air from Canada, along with the moisture - in the form of humidity. No rain in sight.
Asparagus out in the NE corner of the state seems to be getting watered daily. Unfortunately no water here at the house and 97 degrees. (put the soap back in the box, da Boyz are camped-out on their favorite A/C vents)
Uncle Pete running one of his big steam kettles between here and Cheyenne this weekend, so we know where Copcar is, although he is also near the CDOT moving bridge folly at North Yard this weekend. (UP's folks are gonna be extra vigilant for R/W range fires with lotsa dry grass and weedz.)
Gotta take the long walk to the shop to rescue the Exploder after brake work. (BossH is busy today)

Stinky Feathers
Mid-seventies here today, not a cloud in the sky.
One interesting event of our Saturday railroading was having three trains moving, in the same direction, side-by-side, at the same time. A westbound stack train came into Utica Union Station on track one as we were about to roll back into the station after dropping a car near Tower 30. While we were rolling back into the station (with the stacker on track one still going by), another westbound stacker came in on track two (closer to the station), apparently passing the first stacker.
Three trains, all in motion, in the same direction, at the same time. Pretty cool. I wonder if that railfan that was hanging around about the time we left the station a little while later got to experience it...

Congratulations, Canada! The world can always use some good news!
Our temperatures keep creeping up from the forecast. Looks like another hot week in store.
I think I'm going to jump to the other side of the forum... about time to start planning a shelf layout that I've been wanting to do for a while.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.

Greetings from the Pilot in Troy, IL......
Got a little farther than I thought I could today, which will better the odds of me getting to the house on time Wednesday. Also had time, so cashed in some points and fired up the laptop, and surfing around on the internet......
About 90 here in the St Louis area, mirror says 96 sitting still in the sun. Got quite a bit of rain leaving Memphis today, was doing 35 on a 55mph interstate, and throwing up quite the wall of water in the process. Hopefully, tomorrow night I can shut the truck off when I go to bed........
See everyone later......

It was hotter and stickier here than forecast today, too--certainly made no easier when I had to put on the long jeans, work boots, and high-visibility vest for the bike ride into Proviso.Yep--I went back to the yard today (free food at the retirement party for an officer who was one of the good guys was quite the enticement). And you know I had to show off a little... People who ride their bikes into work there today don't have it nearly as easy as I used to. The best route (across the platforms at Berkeley) has been completely ruined by the new third track and a full-length guardrail, the second-best route now requires a portage to get around obstructions at "Global 2 Diesel". My choice to get into the yard was to go into Elmhurst, then go "in the outbound". A couple of portages are involved--one up a curb to get off the street in Elmhurst (I could have sworn that was a drive-in point for the signal guys), and one more across 30 Main and 29 Main before I got to a road that could be ridden in, parallel to the old "Illinois Outbound" track. I'd do this route in or out of the yard from time to time while I was working--more often in later years because it was shorter and less liable to be blocked--but there was an interesting added twist that wasn't possible then.Al's Hobby Shop in downtown Elmhurst is one of my favorite stopping places now, because it usually has an ATCS monitor. I can see a real-time schematic of UP's entire main line from Chicago (Kedzie) past Elburn, Rochelle, and Nelson to Clinton, Iowa--including where the trains are! The signals east of the Elmhurst station had indicated to me that something was lined up to go into the yard. ATCS then revealed that the train was coming through Villa Park and lined into 29 Main, so I had to hightail it if I was going to beat him across. As I got into the yard, I heard the grade crossing at Poplar Avenue activate--I had several hundred feet between me and the manifest as he moved in at about 10 m.p.h. Then I had time to stop and watch him (got a couple of interesting cars before he stopped and I moved on).I wasn't the only retiree to show up to give Roy a sendoff, but it's getting harder and harder to do--most of the people still working around there were unfamiliar to me. The general superintendent is a new guy (new in more ways than one...born after I hired out!), and some of the guys whom I thought not too well of when I was working are at their old or higher positions. And, because it was a Monday morning, the hump was down for maintenance, so nobody was around for me to drop in and say hi.I left by the other route available to me (waiting about 15 minutes for a Global 2 yard move to clear me up--it might have taken longer, but an old-head friend of mine had pity on me). This route takes me along the departure tracks, and I was able to get better-than-usual information from a few freight cars sitting there. Now I have some work to do...
Good Really Early Morning...Lawn cut, mower cleaned, floor of garage/studio cleaned, weeding done, mmmmm, seems a lot of nothing got done...lol!Today apparently will have those ol' t'underin'boomers come through..high of 82 expected feeling like 93...not bad...Have a good day!!
ns has a crane in our siding.saw an eastbound Ns train as well.Breakfast is good.Time for bed.
joe
Joe: I saw this before I headed out for errands, breakfast and train watching, so now I will give you my first thought. You are busy @ work - maybe the crane can pitch in and help?
Yard very, very busy this morning. 6 tracks east/west and 2 north/south and Amtrak - 4 were busy on e/w and 1 going south while Amtrak had one freight coming in from south. Wow! That was exciting. Now I know where to spend my Tuesday Mornings! Didn't hurt that cold front went thru, brought couple of glasses of rain and much nicer weather. Home by 10:30.
Now -
breakfast is set.going to town later on errands.time for bed.
Cool here this AM. Made the mistake of letting the house air out overnight and woke to the sound of the furnace running...
Lining up the weekend - packing, cleaning, etc for three days on the railroad. Put together my submission for the photo competition, too - we'll see if I make the cut this time.
Got an invite to attend the annual picnic at the place from which I retired, and accepted. Get to hobnob with all the folks still working and some of the others who have retired from there as well.
Lunch Time!
Larry, we're going to be using blankets tonight, too. We don't dare run the furnace until we have all of the ducts cleaned, after our construction work. Meantime, the weather is perfect for doing errands via bicycle, and accomplishing work on and around the house (I'm proud of myself today--I've never owned a set of blinds before, and I successfully installed some in the new room by myself!).
Charmageddon continues...a grand-nephew (to our niece) and a grand-niece (to our nephew) both arrived yesterday. That's three in less than two weeks. Now we're just waiting on a grandson, due in ten days.
Good EveningIt has been a somewhat hectic day here. Files redone, reports written up on some of them, records expunged, that sort of thing...My Pine lumber is sitting in an air drying rack in my storage barn...yes, I have one of them thar barn thingees...not big, mind, just big enough to store lumber in...Anyways...got a few things to get finished here...have a good evening!!
Carl: Sounds like you have a bunch of Charmers!!
