switch7frg Quentin; don't forget the "ice grippers " for you and Jean's shoes or boots. Here in the mtn's we haven't had snow yet . The temps. are in the 20's at night, making for a heavy frost and ice on the pond. The ducks don' have non skid padding on their feet, and very funny when they land. You folks be careful on that " freezy skid stuff " as Bounci'n Bill Baker used to say on his Indy radio music show as he was klipping across the kilocycles and mutilati'n the modulation. Cannonball

Cannonball....you have a good memory...re: Our trouble with {both of us}, falling on the ice we had last season. That was a very bad one....Ice on everything....It was even a problem walking on the snow...!
I remember we did talk about "ice grippers".....So far, this season, it's totally different, but we've got a ways to go yet in this Winter.....and really, around here, we seem to see most ice conditions in March.
The fall on the ice mess last season was a bit serious...Jean, a cracked wrist....me, very lucky, as I did fall on our driveway and went down hard....even banged my head to the scary point, I thought, I was in serious trouble....The Lord pulled me through with no damage...! After falling {driveway is on a slight rise from the street....I had a most difficult time of even getting up....Believe I had to craw over to the grass area that had snow and ice on it, but that was some better than the sheet ice I fell on...
So...we'll hope not to see that serious ice cover again this season.
I was just amazed how slippery it was yesterday with the brand new {wet}, inch of snow as we very carefully drove home. Have my special weather prove sand weights in the very back of my Xtreme, and that probably was not very capable of helping that much on that stuff. But sensing the bad conditions, we made it back home safely.
And Darrin.....That photo of the other end of the tunnel really shows the solid rock the tunnel passes thru. And I too like that photo. The ex road bed seems to be very smooth there now being an auto passage way.
Thanks C W....Yes, a safe trip home.
Quentin
I am on the disabling injury list today.
I have a split in the outer corner of my left hand thumbnail bed. Kind of falls under the same category as a paper cut in pain. Do you know that even tho I am right-handed, I have a tendency to either hit or try to use that left thumb more than I thought.
Was supposed to be a domestic goddess today, but may have to put it off for a few days. Awww.
It is cold, but not unbearable. We were trackside yesterday watching the MOW put in either a new rail or at least a temp fix - hard to tell from a distance since they don't approve of me looking over their shoulders while they work.
And NS and CSX both made an appearance traveling thru town. Always nice to see something beside the ugly orange.

Good Friday morning everyone. Not sure of the current temp, as I haven't turned on the TV yet, to hear any news & weather. But I will say that it is cold outside. Going to have to really bundle up later on, when I go to the library and grocery store, to get a few things.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Breakfast of doughnuts, danish, bagels, bear claws, bacon, eggs, etc. are on the warmer bar.
Quentin, good to hear that you and Jean made it back home safely. Everyone have a good morning, and see you all later.

It's the West Portal of Tunnel #9 of the old Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek Railway. It's located on what is called today Gold Camp Road at 38.7318° / -105.0259°
Here is me standing at the East Portal of the same tunnel before we drove through it. Keep in mind I'm 6'5" so that will give you a feel for the size.
Modelcar Looks like that tunnel was bored right into solid rock. Seeing light in side, shows it's curved and not very long.

Yep that is Solid Rock, got to love how many of the old railroads of the GOLD/SILVER boom blasted their way through the Rockies to get the line built.

Went to a dinner meeting tonight amidst light snow. Left the meeting a couple of hours later in the same, and had good roads and visibility even as I came out of a grocery store on the way home.
A quarter mile later I was on an unlighted four lane road with several inches of snow (and danged few landmarks) in whiteout conditions. A fellow ahead of me was clearly befuddled by the situation and managed to cover all four lanes several times before we hit another road with slightly better landmarks.
A mile or two later I was out of it (but still driving through several inches of snow).
Gotta love a good snow squall.

Stourbridge Lion Good Morning Railfans! It's 38F here in the Mile High City with a forecast high of 59F with a bright a sunny sky.
Good Morning Railfans!

Looks like that tunnel was bored right into solid rock. Seeing light in side, shows it's curved and not very long. I was in one {years ago}, about like this one in size....It was totally brick lined, over in Johnstown, Pa. {Yes, I know I was in a dangerous place}, and certainly don't recomend doing so. And once was enough.
Those timbers sawed at an angle to make the arch, always made me wonder how much they might be able to hold if lose rock really came down on it....Not fitted to precision, doesn't make it look very strong.
Late this morning it started to give us some light snow. So Jean and I headed in town to get a few things, and by the time we came out of Meijer's....The ground was white. Perhaps an inch...but it was wet snow, and very slippery. Had to be extremely careful getting back home...{about 3 mi.}, or we would have been sliding off the county roads, or into something or somebody....
Now....It's about 2.5" or so, we'll need to go and measure another time, as it's to be moving on soon...It looks like I might find about 3" of the stuff.
26.8 degrees now.
Liked it better with the ground bare. And, it appears we will be into the 40's staring about Saturday....so perhaps this stuff will not last very long.
It is true, some snows are more slippery in trying to walk, or drive in. Today was a slippery one. When it's very cold, it tends to be less slippery.
On the way home, I practically creeped around intersections I had to turn, and still the back end tried to come around....Partly helped by being equipped with positraction. Enough of this stuff...Phooey.
Haven't heard the temp in a couple of hours, but thinking it is about 41, 42 degrees. At least the wind's not blowing, everything seems to be calm outside.
Here is the menu for the rest of the afternoon and evening:
Beef and Noodle casserole
Fried liver w/carmelized onions,
chicken pot pie
Mashed taters w/bacon, corn fritters, green beans w/ham, fried green tomatoes, buttered lima beans, cooked turnips and buttered beets
Desserts: Lattice-top apple pie, lemon sponge pie, Shoofly cake, spritz cookies
Hope you all enjoy, have a good afternoon/evening, take care, and see you all later.
Bruce - I, too, had to finally give up the warm bed. Had to assume a vertical position to get everything back in order.
We are sharing a cold blanket with you. It is 7 above right now. Wind out of north @ 17. We will make sure to send this on east for all to enjoy.
CN - seems like these things always happen conditions are miserable or inaccessible or both.
Going to start with some coffee until I feel a little more human. May take a lot of coffee.
Good Morning everyone.
Not sleeping again, so I thought I would get up and see what is going on.
-17°F right now.
CN had a crash between Hinton and Grande Cache, AB yesterday on their mainline. One of three crew members had to be airlifted to hospital. Eleven loaded coal cars collided with a stationary train. It is not too much of a bet to guess that cold weather had something to do with letting the 11 cars start to roll. A slow leak from the brake line; but of course it is too early for an official cause. Access to the site is complicated by the absence of roads at that location.
That is all I've got for now.
Bruce
So shovel the coal, let this rattler roll.

AgentKid is cold across all three prairie provinces today, so the railways are definitely going to have trouble keeping up air, which is going to mean big delays.

I checked and CN is reporting delays, on their website, from Winnipeg to Edmonton, and west from Jasper on both of their routes to the coast. Snow is also a problem west of Jasper.
CP will be having the same issues.
-11°F here now.
Well, NWS has been investigating the storms yesterday, and have confirmed a total of 4 or 5 tornadoes yesterday. 1 was here in eastern Jefferson County, the others were elsewhere, in southern Indiana(?). Believe there was 1 confirmed death from the tornadoes yesterday.
Our menu for the rest of the day: Mexican Fiesta:
1. Tacos (soft shell and hard shell)
2. Burritos (beef, beef & bean, beef deluxe enchilada style)
3. Chimichangas
4. Fajitas
5. Rib eye steaks
6. Spanish rice
7. Chopped lettuce w/diced tomatoes (onions on the side)
Haven't checked the current temp, but at least the sun is shining, and winds seem to be somewhat calm.
Everyone have a good afternoon, take care and see you all later.
It's 32F in the Mile High this morning as we head are way up to the 60's. Those in Seattle, WA area I feel for ya as I know 10" of snow your you is like several feet for us. Happy shoveling!
.....Not as cold this morning as forecast...25 vs. 17 degrees.
No snow overnight....so, {in January}, again, the ground is bare.
Unusual season.
So far my two special sand bags...{for weight / traction}, are just along for the ride in my little Xtreme pickup.
But there is no doubt, there will be plenty of time for them to be useful yet....
Well, the wind looks to have let off earlier than the warnings suggested, but not before causing enough problems that the power company quit giving our fire dispatcher ETAs for their arrival at trouble spots.
I see a couple of pieces of shingle on the ground next to the house. Unless they're gonna cause a leak, I'm not concerned as there's steel going up there in the spring.
The snow must have been blown well east of here, 'cause we didn't get any here.
Warm food will be welcome, though, as we're back down to +15F from the 40's yesterday.
At least we didn't get any tornados...
Time to go check the mail.
cherokee woman The guessers have confirmed that we had 2confirmed tornadoes yesterday. Believe both were in the eastern part of the county

WHEW! Glad you are still here.
I couldn't sleep, so I turned on the TV, and the first thing I hear is two twisters in Louisville, KY! That was a bit too much of a jolt for 3:30 AM.
-26°F without windchill factored in at the moment.
Still too early for checking the local RR news scene, but it is this cold or worse across all three prairie provinces today, so the railways are definitely going to have trouble keeping up air, which is going to mean big delays. I will look into whether I can find more on that at a more sensible hour.
CW, I am glad to hear the Cafe made it through unscathed.
Good Wednesday morning everyone. Sorry about not making it back in last night. The guessers have confirmed that we had 2confirmed tornadoes yesterday. Believe both were in the eastern part of the county, and as far as I know, no one seriously injured, and no deaths. so that is a big blessing.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. And breakfast is on the warmer bar.
Went to bed just after 9 p.m., and actually slept until just before 6 a.m. this morning. No coughing or drainage , to keep me awake. Actually feel a lot better this morning.
Everyone have a good morning, take care and see you all later.
It's here - weather station at fire station showing sustained winds 25-30, with the occasional gust to 50, and it's down in the valley, albeit higher up the hill than my place. Where my sensors are I'm getting about half that.
The snow hasn't arrived yet, but the temperature is dropping like a rock...
.....Yes, the wind is on the way Larry. We've been getting it most of this afternoon. That tells me a weather front is right behind it. And we're to be down to 17 in the morning.
Last evening and this morning it was 50 degrees, then later today it began it's cool off...
Our wheeled trash container that resides on the west side of our place here blew over this afternoon. I remember the Town Council telling us {right before we got them}, they were designed to stand on their own up to 45 mph. So, I'd say our gusts were a bit above that this afternoon.
Just a couple of days ago - -20F (and maybe lower than that.
Today - 40F. Sheesh.
We're supposed to get the wind overnight. Just made sure the truck was full of gas in case we're out chasing wind-related calls all night..
holding on from the wind.busy day.stopped at the store.the clerks were putting the sleds and other winter toys away.city council has to decide if they want to do the viaduct project or not.lots of red tape and politics.they could lose grant and other money if they keep this up.cw thanks for supper.time to get stuff around for work.
cherokee woman Stourbridge, I have no idea: supposed to be winter, but we have been under tornado warnings, have had pouring rain, thunder, and lots and lots of wind, Thank Heavens, we all made it to our homes from Produce this morning, before it hit!

Glad to hear you and yours are safe!!!!!!!
Tornado's in January! such is a strong sign that weather patterns are a change'n...
checking in with 17 and wc of 1. Glaze overnite - no donuts!
Sun shining like it is a summer day. Gah....
....Yes it's Winter, and a strange one. It was 50 degrees here earlier this morning. Earlier than that, we had lightning and thunder and of course rain.
It is mild today, and at times pretty bright, and sometimes a bit of rain. The Fairway on the golf course behind us has some water laying on it like a small lake.....That is rare, especially this time of the season.
Tomorrow morning, our morning paper indicates we're to have 17 degrees. Than a bit warmer further into the week....and for tomorrow, sunshine.
Just a very different January. I noted this morning the northwest area, {Seattle}, was to get or did get up to a foot of snow, and the annual avg. is just 6.9" for the whole season. And we all probably know Alaska is really getting extremes too. {Ice breaker and fuel tanker to reach an isolated area to get needed fuel oil for a community....No other way passable.
Hope we don't make up for this with a nasty Summer....or violent storms.....
Stourbridge, I have no idea: supposed to be winter, but we have been under tornado warnings, have had pouring rain, thunder, and lots and lots of wind, Thank Heavens, we all made it to our homes from Produce this morning, before it hit! Apparently, we don't have any damage, just a bunch of stuff blown all over the front & back yards. Temps will continue to drop throughout the afternoon, will be down in the upper 20s, low 30s by morning.
Menu for today:
Warmed up the pork roast, mashed taters, etc., from yesterday, and we'll also have grilled chicken, lasagna, bread sticks, garden salad.
If you're east of us, batten down the hatches, cause it is coming your way. Everyone take care, have a good afternoon, and see you all later.
It's 9F in the Mile High City this morning with a fresh dusting of snow on the ground. They say we will be heading for the 60's in the next few days; what season is this?
