This from a person who learned to type on an Underwood portable secretary model...

Is that the black one with the open frame?

We had one like that when I was growing up.  Couldn't type too fast as the keys would jam (which is the sole justification for the QWERTY keyboard, by the way).

There was a similar model floating around the barracks when I was at Tinker AFB.  You dang near needed a hammer to hit the keys.

All well and good; however, I needed help, not just a place to practice.

And now I see my photos on the earlier page have vanished--hopefully the problem is with Flickr, as I certainly didn't do anything on this thread until just now, nor have I visited Flickr today.

Just when I thought I was starting to get it....

Yup,

Black crinkle enamel paint with gold lettering.

And the space bar would always stick down, because it was hammered and hammered and hammered.

Most keys I got stuck at once was four.....

Big Z, don't give up...

Here's my process for posting from Flickr:

1) I open one tab with my Trains.com post and another with the Flickr Photo I'd like to share. So, let's say I'm going to go with this one. (I tried to pick something colorful for you, Jim) Wink

2) On the Flickr Page, right click on the picture. That will bring up Flickr's display size options. In this case, the original is 1024 x 680, so I'll click on Original.

3) That will bring up the actual image for display. You'll again right click on the picture, but your next move depends on which browser you're using. I use both, so I can describe both processes. In FireFox, pick "Copy Image Location" when you right click. In Internet Exploder, you'll need to right click and choose "Properties," That will bring up another window. Highlight the URL and right click to copy it.

4) Head back to your Trains.com post. When you get to a point in your post where you want to place the picture, click the icon that looks like a film strip in the toolbar. That will bring up a box prompting you to Insert Media. Paste the address of the photo.

5) With other film hosts, that would be enough. If you read Flickr's Terms of Service, though, it states that:

Do link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere.
Flickr makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr to other web sites. However, pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr. This provides a way to get more information about the content and the photographer.

So, you'll need to provide a link back to the main Flickr image address. It's as simple as cutting and pasting that like so: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ghosstrider/3354119731/

I try to clean it up a bit by making a Flickr Link below each shot. If you want to know how that's done let me know.

The end result should yield a photo like this:

Flickr Link

It's kind of a hassle, so I wouldn't recommend Flickr for image hosting anymore. However, I'm already established there and active in the Flickr community, so I'll stick with it for now. One of these days I'd like to do like Tree and get my own site for my better stuff (my Flickr site has a lot of "lesser" images that I post because they still might be of interest to family and friends).

I hope this helps. If not, let me know what I need to clear up.

Good luck!

OK, Chris, here I go again.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3170/5808427522_ee7c089c0e_b.jpg

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jim53171/5808427522/sizes/l/in/photostream/

(Which link would be the correct one to use?)

I am confused about the links however. In the example you provided, if I mouse over the image I get a particular link, but if I look at the URL on the actual link you provided, it shows a different address. (And yes, I would like to know how to do the short link names).

It worked!!!  Now I'll wait a day to see if it keeps working (my others stopped showing after a day).

Thanks, Chris!

Thanks. That shot reproduced surprisingly well, considering it is an old Velvia slide that I scanned on my home scanner. It's a bit soft, but not too bad.

Sweet!

This is how I embed the link into text:

1) Copy the link.

2) Type: {URL= (except the { is a [)

3) Paste the link after the equal sign.

4) Type: } (except the } is a ])

5) Write the text that you want the link to be embedded in (example: Flickr Link)

6) Type: {/URL} (again substituting { and } for [ and ])

So the end product for your shot would look like this:

{URL=http://www.flickr.com/photos/jim53171/5892262164/sizes/l/in/photostream/}Flickr Link{/url}

except that you'll need to replace the { and }'s with [ and ]'s.

If it works, it'll do this:

Flickr Link

Chris, thanks so much.

And to all you other guys who helped, thanks also! It just took me a while to get it; maybe there was something in Chris' description that clicked with me, or else maybe I'm just having a better-than-average day cognitively.

No problem! Now I look forward to lots of great shots from you, even if I do occasionally think that B&W might work better. Wink

Unique, to say the least!  I like it!

Thanks to Chris for the Flickr stuff - not an area I'm well versed in.

Chris - webspace isn't all that expensive.  Flickr gives you an easy way to display your stuff, though.

With a little HTML, you could put up your own website.
