I have tried numerous times to post a photo such that it shows in the thread (as opposed to just posting a link). I looked at the FAQ section, but what I tried did not work. I'm sure it's something relatively simple I'm not doing, but I sure cannot figure it out. (BTW, I do have photos on Flickr that I can link to).
Any help would be appreciated.

Open a word program, office works or word pad...
Go to Flickr, when you pass your cursor over the photo, it should show you the url, I think it is under the photo or to the side, highlight the url, copy it to the word program, add you text to word, then click on the word icon at the top of the thread box, you know the rest.

Flickr is odd. The way they try to prevent you from linking right to the photo makes it hard to post photos here. I set up a photobucket account for this site - much easier.

With photobucket, when you pass the cursor over the photo, a menu appears directly under the photo...go to the one that says img. and right click, it will flash and say "copied"
Go to your word program, use the paste function to paste the image info, it will look like a link to a site...
Add your text.
Then open a separate browser window, go to trains.com and the thread you want to post in, hit the reply button, (or start a new thread) and when the box opens, you will see an icon bar across the top...go to your word program, copy the "link and text you have there, (highlight then right click and copy)
Go back to trains, click on the far right word icon, it a w in a little box.
A new box will pop up, hit control and then v on your keyboard, your text and photo link will show up, click the insert prompt and your done.
The method that I have found that works (and I just used it in the 765 thread) is to go to Your Photostream page on Flickr, scroll down to the picture you want to display, right-click on that picture, select Properties in the resulting list (should be at the bottom), copy the Address (URL) in the resulting Properties box, and paste that into your post with {img} in front of it and {/img} behind it, except use the square brackets instead of the curly ones.

Being the geek that I am, I have my own webspace (actually not that expensive) so I upload my pictures to that and link to said space.
There's no limit to the image size that way (the forum doesn't have to store the actual image - it pulls it from the website you specify). The forum software will reduce the size of the displayed image and give the viewer the opportunity to view it full size.
Since most images we use on the web are JPEGs, one thing to look for in the URL you want to link to is for it to end with .JPG. Your URL should look something like this: http://www.website.com/directory/yourimage.jpg.
The exact content will depend on the website and may include several levels of directories.
Again, being the geek I am, I put in my own IMG tags - using the square brackets [] around "IMG" (no quotes) at the beginning of the image URL and "/IMG" (no quotes) at the end of the URL.
Some photo sites actually offer you the URL to link to the image - look for that, too.

You can change the size your computer stores photos at, I just have to remember how...its part of the down load software, I think under advance in your toolbar.
That way, when you download from your computer to Flicker or Photobucket, the inage will look the same on those sites, but be large when posted to a internet forum or other site, as it uploads at the original size....Geeks like Tree can figure it out I am sure.
....Can anyone comment about the "tinypic" photo sharing service. I use it on a message board I'm on....An automotive site.
Could it be used on this forum...?
It is so simple, to upload with a couple clicks, and the photo is uploaded to the message board.

I've taken photos of trains for so long and did not really have anybody to share them with; now I can get helpful comments and reccommendation from others on how to improve my technique.

Each tag is enclosed by both [ and ], ie, [tag]. You left the closing bracket off IMG.
Quoting your post gave me the "source code." I just made the correction. If you go back to your original post and "quote" it, you'll see. Just back button out of it and you won't post anything. You can do the same thing with my post.
Tags usually come in pairs. The closing tag is the same as the opening tag, but with a slash in front of it: [tag]something[/tag].
Some of the more involved tags (color, font) just use the keyword at the closing end.
Forum code is quite similar to HTML - the basic language of websites. In HTML the tags are enclosed with <> instead of []. I've done several websites, so jumping over to forum code is easy.
Rather than use the radio buttons at the top of the reply box, I just type in the italic, bold, and underline tags if I want to use them. You can nest them, so you can have a word in bold and italic, and underline it, too....

I'll agree with Larry...I follow your photostream Jim...I'm waiting.
You can select which size image you want to share on Flickr. It's as easy as click, copy, paste. The next 4 images are linked here using the method I've outlined in the pictures. Graphically...right?
Step 1Start on the page of the picture (from Flickr) that you want to use. Click the "drop carrot" near the envelope (circled in red). Under "Grab the HTML/BBCode" you have some options.
Step 2Select the type (HTML for here) size image you want to display. Click in the area where the code appears. Right click on your mouse to find the "Copy" command.
Step 3In the "Post Message Box here at Trains.com click on the "HTML" button circled in red.
Step 4In the appropriate space of the box that appears simply right click, select "Paste" and then "Update" (at the bottom-left) circled in red.
That should work and be applicable with other sites.
