Better yet, I remember when Esso Extra was about 30 cents a gallon.
Hi everyone. I hadn't planned to post today but when I saw Murray's post I just had to jump in.
It reminded me that back in high school there was a place called Gales Service here, that had gas at 33.9 cents per gallon. Now this was an interesting place. It had contracts with a major taxi fleet in town as well as a number of commercial fleets and individual gravel truck owners. This was before commercial trucks switched to diesel en masse.
Mr. Gale did so much business he went to the refinery once a day with his OWN semi trailer tanker truck. The trailer was a '30's vintage unit, and he pulled it with a 1960 or so Dodge tractor. That trailer was about the size of those big plastic looking water tanks you see at construction sites mounted on 5 ton trucks now. Needless to say he was the biggest fuel dealer in Alberta for a number of years. During the first Arab Oil Embargo his station was in pictures in Canadian, and maybe US papers as well, for having the cheapest gas in North America for a few days before his price started going up as well.
It REALLY was a Full Service service station. If you phoned a certain number ahead of time, when you drove up to the station a young lady would run out of the office and jump into your car as you drove off! One of my friends from the neighbourhood worked there for several years, but he was under strict instructions not to discuss that aspect of the operation! He was paid exactly a $1 per hour more than any other gas jockey in the city, and in those days that was saying something. The building and lot was demolished two winters ago.
Not exactly RR related, but Murray and Quentin's memories got me thinking.
I haven't checked my usual sources of information today, so I have nothing new to report. A Supreme pizza sounds good tonight. Everyone have a good evening.

Our rain has ended, at least for now. The sun is trying to come out. Walt just checked our rain gauge, and it read 2 3/4 inches since yesterday. But with more due later this evening/tonight and tomorrow, Walt says if anyone's got any extra lumber around, could you send it our way, so we can build a boat, if we have to?
I've just about got our Easter Dinner ready for Sunday Dinner tomorrow: turkey, made from scratch dressing, shelly beans. All I have to do is boil some potatoes to mash, and then tomorrow, put some crescent rolls in the oven, just before we eat. (And all of that will be on the Cafe/Diner's menu for tomorrow!
Here is the Saturday Night Pizza Fest menu for tonight:
1. Anchovie
2. Canadian bacon
3. Cheese w/extra cheese
4. Chicago style
5. Goetta
6. Hawaiian
7. Ham & green pepper
8. Italian sausage
9. Pepperoni/mushroom
10. Supreme
Hope you all enjoy your pizza, have a good evening, take care, and see you tomorrow.
P.S. FOR CARL: So sorry to hear about the passing of Gene Huddleston. Unlike you, I never met him; but I have read some of his articles in the past, and Walt has a couple of the books he has authored/coauthored. If you would, please accept my sympathies for your loss.
....Well, I managed to get it half mowed....and it wasn't the rain that stopped me...Believe it's the drive pulley on top of the transaxle decided it was going to slip....for some reason...Not sure how it's affixed to the drive shaft of the T A, and it can't be seen either. Felt it with a little stretching with my hand and it seems loose on the shaft....
So...John Deere mobile Service can't be here until Monday afternoon.....Thought I was going to get it mowed just in time before several days of rain.... (!] But not to be...Did get half of it done.
So...I'll go and watch the Pacers try not to go down in 4....
Murray Modelcar: I suppose everyone has noticed the prediction of 4 dollar gasoline will probably hit us by Memorial Day....Duh...! Probably will be closer to 5. Believe the 4 dollar mark is when it starts to get everyone's attention. Quentin, there was a news story on NBC last night from Washington State. It was showing Canadians coming across the border to get gas, as the gas prices in British Columbia are at the equivalent of $6.00/gallon. And to think it wasn't too long ago in the past that my Grandpa got get a Dollars worth of Gulf regular gas and he got a 1/2 tank in his 1951 Henry J. My family had an Esso Station built and opened along route 30 in Pennsylvania back in 1938. And I remember a sign Dad had made up sometime after it opened: 6 gal. for $1.00...!!
As late as the mid 1960's...I have a pic. here taken by friends of ours following us back to Pennsylvania...We were in a 1962 SS Chevy so it was in the early 60's, and a sign in the pic. clearly shows reg.gas: 30 cents....and hi test: 32 cents a gal.

,,,,Surprised to hear of all the rain in Louisville....Sunshine here, and soon as the grass dries from overnight, and a wet yesterday, I'll be on the tractor mowing.
I know we have rain possibilities all thru the new week until about Thursday, so must get on the lawn today while I have a chance.
Been watching that line of strong storms coming across from the southwest towards the east, but just below us. Am aware of the nasty damage to much around the area of St. Louis....including the airport.
So...must go check and see if the grass is about dry.
Temps. here now in mid 60's and with sunshine I'd believe it's about dry. Have some breeze blowing too, and that certainly will help.
We wish a good weekend for all the Posters here.

This web site is normally up to pretty good speed at this time of the day, but useless in the evening, as I'm sure we've all noticed. Traffic pretty light on here.
Good Morning Everyone:
I'm following the reports from last nights tornado in St Louis. My niece and her boyfriend live within a mile of the airport. They are safe with no damage...but there was damage within 2 blocks of their home.
And more rain/storms are on the way to St Louis at this time.
As for Alamo City, we continue hot and very very dry. We need to get some rain soon! Unfortunately thats not in the cards. Todays expected high is 92 with sun and wind. More wild fire dange to the west and north I'm afraid.
Enjoy your Easter Saturday! And for those of you in tornado prone areas, please be alert, have your weather radio handy, and take appropriate precautions if there is a tornado in your area.
Good morning and peace be with youi. 63 and partly cloudy in Carolina at present. Paula, you have whetted my appetite. See ya in the mess hall

Good Saturday morning everyone. Larry, "overdrive" is what our Weather Radio was in all night long. I didn't get much sleep at all. Rain is still pouring (almost to the Cats and Dogs stage). Lots of thunder and lightning, too.
Joe, I saw the picture of the truck that got opened by the can opener on Facebook. People never will learn about that viaduct, will they?
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Regular Saturday morning brunch is on the serving station: bacon, sausage, eggs, fried taters, cinnamon rolls, made-from-scratch biscuits, milk gravy, pancakes & syrup, fresh cantaloupe and strawberries.
Everyone enjoy your day, keep as dry as possible, and keep safe with all these storms around.
I will be in the kitchen for the rest of the day.
Popcorn sounds good, then it's time for bed. Working as a student conductor on the Easter Bunny trains Saturday, and time on duty is 8AM. That two hour drive means leaving at 6 AM... Unfortunately, the weather isn't looking promising...
Sounding like nasty weather is pummelling the St Louis area, including at least one tornado. The Weather Channel is in overdrive.

At 3:08 p.m., we are getting light rain. Nothing heavy yet, although we are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 7 p.m. tonight.
Here is our Friday Fish Menu for this afternoon and tonight:
FISH: Cod, Flounder, Haddock, Halibut, Perch, Talapia, Salmon patties, shrimp, crab meat
SIDE DISHES: Cole slaw, Corn on the cob, Fries, Hush puppies, breaded fried mushrooms, Baked beans, Macaroni & Cheese, Baked corn bread
DESSERTS: Chocolate cake w/chocolate icing, Yellow cake w/caramel icing, Pecan pie, and the following cobblers: apple, blueberry, cherry and peach
Hope you all enjoy, have a good afternoon, stay dry if you can and take care. Don't know if I'll make it back in later on or not. Have a lot of things to do to get ready to start baking/cooking tomorrow: along with making up the pizzas for our pizza fest tomorrow night.
See ya!!!

The next time I move I am going to pack a small, brown paper sack - set it by the back door and then set it on fire in the driveway as I drive off.
I HATE TO MOVE!
Ta....
Second the motion of hating to move....Takes lots of energy and work. Personally, we've not done so in decades. Have owned several houses before we had this one built, and of course that requred to move each time we did so..
Now...it's been 40 years since we did this house, and of course that means there has been no moving for us in all those years. One move was 400 mi. early in our married life. From Pa. to here, way back when. And glad all that is behind us.
Still below our normal temps here....Not raining now, but rain possibility is in the forecast each day until next Thursday. Overcast here this morning, and expect it to be all day.
Must head to Communion this afternoon....A one on one with one of our Pastors available this afternoon to 7 pm....It really does bring it "close" when one does it this way.....A very personal feeling.
Too bad we can't use this site in the eveing now....
And, I'll have to check the N L cams again....Last time I checked it was a different set up....just 2 cams available. But I never could use the "other" cams anyway, for some unknown reason.....
good friday morning
was glad of the sunshine yesterday afternoon.we saw q389 and k 311 wait for q 324 to clear defiance before they could go westbound.off to go swim with matt and workout with mom.CW thanks for breakfast.
Good Friday morning everyone. Mookie, I'm so glad to stopped in last night!! Since you were the last one in, I guess that everyone else had trouble getting in the main doors, and gave up trying to get in.
Rain is beginning to come into the area, but we are still dry. Going to be off and on rain throughout the day, with the possibility of some severe storms, and maybe a slight tornado chance. The Ohio River is already high, and we have a pretty good chance of some areas experiencing some flash flooding.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. On the serving station this morning: and assortment of doughnuts, danish, blueberry muffins, oat bran muffins w/raisins, along with the regular breakfast menu.
I have my cornbread made, and sometime today, will make my biscuits and have them ready to start my Easter cooking tomorrow morning. The turkey is thawed and in the fridge. If anyone wants ham, please let me know, and I'll get that going also.
For those who won't be in Sunday, I want to wish everyone a Very Happy Easter, and hope you remember what we are celebrating this weekend. Keep it a safe weekend, and take care.
Gloomy, cool day. Gloomy, cool nite, too.
Been watching the Netherland Cams - now have, as near as I can tell, 2 owlets, 4 peregrinettes, and 4 kestrel eggs - just in case you are keeping score. Mice going in and out of nestboxes at a rapid rate. We should be mouse free by mid-summer.
Did a little train watching today - mostly coal. Did see one empty rail train, heading south.
Read that the conductor and engineer on fatal train wreck in Iowa was one female and one male. Sigh. That makes it even a little more personal for me, besides being fairly close to home.
Going out again tomorrow for the day. (Well, what is retirement for....) Saturday sometime, hope to catch a chicken in my net. Flying low and fast over city, so will see if we can bring him down long enough for lunch. Will stuff him and then send him back to Boss Hen and De Boyz.
All from here.
Randy - glad you are moving and not me. The next time I move I am going to pack a small, brown paper sack - set it by the back door and then set it on fire in the driveway as I drive off.
She who has no signature! cinscocom-tmw
Evening everyone. Therapy went well. Not quite as sore as I was Tuesday. That is a good thing!
For supper tonight:
1. Leftover vegetable beef soup w/your choice of PB&J, grilled cheese or pimento cheese sandwiches.
2. Grilled chicken w/your choice of peas & corn, baby veggie medley, or broccoli/cauliflower and garden salad.
Nice sunshine right now, with a current temp of 63 degrees. There is a slight breeze blowing, so still need a lightweight jacket on outside. Otherwise, very, very nice evening shaping up. Rain not expected to be in until around 6 a.m. tomorrow, and will be intermittent most of the day. The bad news is: from tomorrow morning thru Sunday, we could see total rainfall of 3 to 5 inches.
Everyone have a good evening, enjoy your dinner/supper take care, and see you all in the morning.
Hi CW, soup and a sandwich sounds great for a late lunch.
Well, as you can see by today's Newswire I am not the only one complaining about the winter weather around here. Even without forty below temperatures this winter it has still shaped up to be record setting in various ways. Mostly caused by continuous dumps of snow over a very long time frame with no real Chinooks to melt it down in between storms. I think it will be the lack of Chinooks that people will remember about this winter.
Right now it is 39°F and unbelievably there is a half inch more snow forecast overnight tonight. A front like this in a normal year would just be a spring shower, but with so much snow cover still on the ground the air can't warm up enough to keep the snow away.
No other news to report today.
Randy, when you make your living out of your truck, getting a new one is always nice. However, my uncle, who used to use pickup trucks in his job sometimes wished a couple of them had never left the factory. After hearing his stories I am still surprised when I see an early seventies Dodge still on the road!.
well nice sunshine this afternoon.waiting on matt to get off the bus so we can go into town.might see if we can convince csx to run something by.tonight is friday for us.Cw thanks for supper.Modelcar keep that good news coming. We have recieved an email about the trainfestival that they want to offer a train ride from chicago to the trainfestival in rock island this summer.
.....Randy, being in line for a new tractor must be a good feeling....Especially if you get to be the primary driver of it in it's life time. That way you get to understand it's weaknesses and strengths, and run accordingly. 850,000 mi....! That's quite a performance for a pc. of equipment.
Tried to get to this site last night, but was unsuccessful....Guess we'll just plan to check in during the day and forget trying to do so in the evening.
Sunshine here this morning, but still below normal temps. for this time of the season. Yesterday I emptied 2" of rain out of my rain gauge for the past 24. Our water table certainly should be in great shape.
Railroad activity news in our area: As I mentioned previously, local university and a commuter group are trying to arrange Amtrak to operate some activity between Muncie and Indy sometime in Sept. for a sports activity down in Indy.
Plus....Progress Rail appears to be full steam ahead to get the new rail business location up and running....Continue to hear of a test track being constucted on the property.
Larry: Yep, brought a load down to Columbia, SC, then turned around and grabbed 18,000lb of plastic cups for home, had a 3am wake up call in Georgetown, KY, yesterday courtesy of ma nature, truck was rocking really good. Got up to Walton, and found out three trucks had blown over in the rest area, and the rest area sustained major building and tree damage. I was very lucky......
In other news, starting in June, Millis is getting about 300 new trucks to replace the 2006 and 2007 models, which are worn out. I should be one of the first to get a new one, as I have over 820,000 on the odometer.
At home now, today will be spent moving our kitchen and possibly the beds, we may be sleeping in the house for the first time tonight. Hope to be finished moving by the end of the weekend, and working on setting up the house and renovations. Will have enough to keep me busy.
See everyone later......

Good Thursday morning everyone. Temp is in the mid 40s this morning, supposed to make it up to about 64 for a high today. Then the rain/storms come back in tomorrow morning, maybe around 8 a.m.
Bruce, you can keep the snow, if you wish. We've had enough moisture around here. And preparing to get more, with the rain coming in for the weekend. Going to be a cold, wet Easter in our area.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, including hot water for hot tea. Breakfast is fixed and on the serving station.
There is plenty of vegetable beef soup left for lunch today, and I've made PB&J sandwiches to go with the soup. I'll be at Physical Therapy at lunchtime.
Everyone have a good morning, take care and I'll see you all later this afternoon.
Busy, busy, busy. Two days of rules classes (S & S), kick back on Monday (1.5 hour drive each way to the classes each day, not to mention going to the public TV station after class Sunday night).
Had to monitor equipment testing at the FD on Tuesday, and taught CPR Tuesday night. Rained all day today - upwards of an inch.
Randy - I'm betting you visited a certain brewery in B'Ville. I drive right by it every time I visit my daughter and her family just a short distance from there.
Back to the shop tomorrow with the truck - looks like it's got a vacuum leak, and from what I can tell, a pinhole will set off the 'alarm.'
Dryer's done. Time to fold laundry.
Hello everyone, glad to be back.
The big snowstorm predicted around here for last weekend didn't amount to much in my neighbourhood. Snow only stuck to the road and sidewalks for a few hours overnight and into the morning on Saturday and Sunday. There is even more snow on the lawns however. I was up around 5:30 AM Sunday morning looking for my paper, and it was down to 11°F.
I tried to get in here for supper on Monday, and couldn't, to report on the storm then. I see though that folks across the US have had record tornado's over the same time frame, so our little storm doesn't seem like much especially since it was more of what we were already used to. Yesterday, I too had a medical appointment runaround day. I had to get a shot in my right shoulder to reduce an as yet unidentified source of pain. I am hopeful though, that after this one, my third, I will be able to resume Curling next fall. I really haven't liked not being able to Curl this past winter.
I live down in the Bow River valley, in one of the oldest areas of Calgary, and our weather down here is always somewhat moderated compared to those who live farther out. My trip yesterday took me out to a part of Calgary that was bald prairie 60 years ago, and it still snows like it out there. There are plenty of big box stores and shopping malls with big parking lots, and highrise office and apartment buildings with underground parking that is accessed off of back alleys. Are there ever some HUGE piles of snow that were placed around them by snow removal equipment. It is going to take a long time for those to melt. Right now a lot of those piles are higher than cars and almost as high as the cabs of commercial trucks. I think we will have plenty of run off issues yet.
Right now it is 41°F and sunny. Today is the first day in over a week the apartment hasn't felt cold. The inside thermometer measuring the air temperature doesn't show it, but the walls and concrete floor still aren't warmed up yet. It just makes things feel unpleasant. The low is forecast to be above freezing tonight, so I think things should be getting better.
No new local RR or flooding news in my area at the moment. Hope everyone has a good day.
made it throught the storms last night.the creek is going back down.Like modelcar could use some drier weather. The jefferson ave viaduct has another hash mark on it according to last nights paper. We have Matt's lunch ready for his field trip tomorrow. Time to get some chores done around here.Cw thanks for supper for tonight.
Site isn't too slow at 1:24 p.m. Didn't have any trouble getting in.
Our current temp is 50 degrees and very breezy outside. Went out and collected the garbage can, from the curb. Did not even think to check the rain gauge. Will have to do that the next time I'm outside, in a little while.
Since it is so slow in here, for the rest of the afternoon/evening, I've made:
1. Vegetable beef soup w/fresh baked cornbread and some sandwiches to have with it: PB&J, grilled cheese and pimento cheese.
Everyone enjoy your afternoon, take care and see you all later.
.....From what we see here we survived the weather ok....My rain gauge has 2" of rain fall from roughly the last 24.
The weather line passed thru here roughly at 11 last night, and probably had pretty strong gusts. Actually, didn't really hear much of it, but did peak out and looked at the trees moving, and making noise blowing thru them.
Tried to get on here without success last night, gave up and considered it a lost cause. I note this morning the info they are aware of the serious slow down of the system in the evening, so no use to comment any more on that. Sure hope they can find the solution soon. Believe people are drifting away from it....{The web site}.
Overcast here this morning, but radar shows all this system east of us now...Believe we'll see some sun possibly this afternoon.
Now....in a short while, I must get ready to go and have this temp. crown removed and the permanent porcelain one installed. That will be the finale of this project starting with a root canal, and so on..Be glad to have it finished.
Every thing looks so green here this morning. Just a bit windy still and not too warm. Snow is in the forecast back in our home area of Pennsylvania for sometime today. What extremes of weather this Spring.
