70 degrees earlier here to start our day.  So just a few min. ago, we closed the windows.  Forecast indicated we'll head for about 90 with humidity, so no use to let it gain a foot hold.

Next week appears {via forecasters}, to be a reall nice {sunny}, week...A bit lower temps too.

It's currently 82 here in Alamo City.  Expected high today of 96.  High tomorrow 97.  No rain in the immediate forecast until Wednesday.

Off to run errands.

Enjoy your Saturday!

I had not heard of "Operation Sunset," so I searched for it, and found that it puts an end to "Payday Loans" in the state. It is really sad that people have so much trouble managing their finances that they have to borrow money at usurious rates. I am reminded of a man in my hometown who would loan a quarter to someone during the week and then be paid thirty cents at the end of the week; this was more than sixty years ago.

Thursday - Sunny and 101 (in MD).

Today, raining and 66 (in NY).

I suspect some of those people who are borrowing at usurious rates are simply greedy for their own money - it always feels good to spend money, and it's always a pain to have to wait for it.

Along those lines - my father once told me of someone he knew of who would borrow some amount of money from the bank but not spend it.  He just held it for the term of the note and paid it back, with interest.  Apparently he had an excellent credit rating (although the current system wasn't in use way back then).

FWIW; that car is N C & St. L 20000. Still has a roof walk and high mounted brake wheel. Couldn't actually see the "built date", but it did have another date on it of sometime in 1939

Walt.....Is that rail car {boxcar}, setting on old, now non accessible rails....Like trees grown up on former ROW, etc......Or just abandoned by some scrap outfit and so on......?

The equipment there is sitting on rails; they were moved in about 20 years ago to be saved(?) When we talked with the owners of the property, he said the person that owns the stuff is still making the monthly storage charge payments.

This equipment is sitting on the property of an import, export, packaging company right next to Interstate 64 and most of this property is the old Pennsylvania Rail yard here in Lou. If you do a "Google Earth" for Lou., use 1600 Northwestern Parkway as the address and scroll towards the east, you'll be able to see the "Lift Bridge" and this property.

Mookie, just about the only way Mutt does weeds anymore, is with the weed eater.  He's about like me:  if he got down to pull weeds, he'd never get upright again, without help.

Sarah is working as a cub conductor (would that be the correct terminology?).

Johnny, hope you and Ricki are recuperating from your vacation.  I'll remember you two in my prayers (along with all the rest of our forum friends).

Here is our Saturday Night Pizza Fest menu:

1.  Canadian bacon

2.  Cheese

3.  Chicago style

4.  Goetta

5.  Hawaiian

6.  Italian sausage

7.  Pepperoni/mushroom

8.  Supreme

Everyone have a good evening, enjoy your pizza, keep safe, cool and take care.

Finally quiet here after more than 8 hours of thunder. It rained so hard I didn't go out for supper. Presently 76 in Carolina and still cloudy.

Take care

Good Sunday morning, everyone.  Tom, sorry to hear about your 8 hours of thunder.  We have gotten none of that.  Not even a drop of rain yesterday.  W currently have a temp of 81 degrees, going for a high of 91,92; but with the heat index, it's going to feel like it is 100 degrees outside today.  So looks like we'll have another hot and steamy day.  Supposedly, we're supposed to have some rain coming in tonight, tomorrow, that is going to cool off the temps around here.

Coffee, juices, etc., are fresh and ready to go.  On the serving station this morning:  blueberry muffins, fresh raspberries, cereal, turkey bacon, pork sausage, biscuits & gravy, scrambled eggs.  There's also some bagels and bear claws.

Everyone have a good morning, those going to Church, be safe and you all take care, whatever you have planned for today.

......A very nice morning here for us.....Potential to be rather warm and sticky.  No rain yesterday, just sunshine and pretty blue skies.

Clear at noon today and later in the afternoon scattered thunderstorms....chance of, etc.....more or less the standard listing.

It is sticky out this morning....Got my lawn shaped up last evening.  I waited until 8 pm before I even started to mow.....Even then it was still 90 degrees, but the sun was behind some of the trees to the west of me and afforded at least some shade.  Sun set is not to 9:15 here and we have lots of daylight to do such things in the evening this time of the season.

Flowers....grass, and all growing things seem to be having a super season.  Some corn now 7 and 8' high, and still really nice and green.

"Corn knee high by the 4th of July".....Boy, won't apply anywhere near here this season....

Seems like we'll have a nice sunny and slightly cooler week coming up.

Some auto polishing hopefully will be in the works...{with lower humidity}.

So....next on the agenda for today is get ready for church....then probably over to Ruby Tuesday's for Sunday meal with some friends......Then, hopefully catch some of the New Hampshire Nascar event.....Probably will nap thru some of that....

Wish a good new week for all.....

Good morning. 82 and sunny in Carolina this morning, more thunder forecast. For all the rain we had here, offricially, we only got .28 inch. Hard to fathom that 6 miles could make such a difference...

I have been behind the times, apparently. When the dust from the bear affair settled, comments on the newspaper blog indicated that bears are fairly common in this part of the state. Surprised me that I had never heard of them.

Thanks, Paula, for breakfast. Be back soon

Had a good time Friday night and yesterday in northern Illinois- spent the night at a Courtyard by Marriott in Elgin, watched a small-town parade in Lindenwood, and saw a few trains on the way over and back, as well as two from the covered pavilion in Rochelle.  I was lucky enough to spot the Olympic unit, 2002, westbound in Clinton, IA, #3 in a five-pack pulling a relatively short mixed freight.  No pics, though, as I was driving in the other direction at the time.  Will post a shot from Rochelle later...

Brian - Left Iowa late yesterday morning and went across US-30 all the way home. While keeping the tin shoes, do you think you could loan Mookie the tin hat? (Warnings and watches everywhere. - Rivers are bank-full. I was mosquito food for most of the week.)

Sarah got in about an hour ago.  Will go back out tomorrow night, around 6 p.m.

Brian, sounds like you had a pretty good time.  Will look forward to your pictures, whether here in the Cafe, or on FB.

Mudchicken, keep up the good fight, especially with the mosquitoes!

Here is our Sunday Dinner menu:

Meat loaf w/mashed taters & gravy, your choice of the following veggies:  broccoli w/cheese sauce, succatash (lima beans w/corn), peas & carrots, cole slaw or garden salad, sliced tomatoes.

Walt and I just came in from outside, and it feels like it is already in the 90s (that darn heat index).  The weather radio has already gone off once, for counties to the north/east of us, around Oldham County, KY.  Meanwhile, we still have plenty of sunshine, but a little bit of a breeze out.

Everyone enjoy your dinner, have a safe, comfortable afternoon, and you all take care.

Greetings! Now 92 here and is miserable.

I suppose many had a pretty hot one today.....with high humidity too.

A line of weather {red on the radar}, but not very wide passed here an hour or so ago and took a bit of the heat with it, but it's still high in the 80's.

.7" of rain since this morning.  We're certainly not short on rain around here this month...The corn probably grew a foot in the last 24....Rain, and humidity and heat = fast growing corn.

This coming week is to be really nice....lower temps, and humidity and lots of sunshine.

Brian, that's a nice foto of Uncle Pete in action.

We've had .73 inch of rain today and it's still drizzling. Radar shows us i the middle of a yellow patch, but no thunder PTL.

Cannonball, did not hook up with W7YRC. Lightning chased me off the air twice yesterday and today. I had thought it was a hamfest, but think now it was Field Day. Wish I could have made it.

Everyone take care

I think he was heading into Global 3- he stopped for a bit after the DPU on the rear cleared the diamond.

Oh, and this is the former C&NW line- most traffic tends to be left-hand-running, although both tracks are bi-directional.  The only other train I saw while I was there was also a westbound stacker with a few trailers thrown in for good measure (probably a Z-train), and he came through on the other track.  As soon as the engines cleared the diamond, he notched it up and made like a defensive hockey player.  I left a few minutes later and headed the same general direction, and finally caught sight of him just east of Dixon.Shock

Good Monday morning, everyone.  Brian, that is a very nice looking photo.  Thank you for sharing with us!

Well, we did get some rain overnight.  The morning news said we did get some thunder & lightning, but I never saw nor heard any of it.  From what I can see from the kitchen window, we still have a little bit of rain coming down, or the street is just still wet from the overnight rain.  Supposed to be getting a little bit more, and then it'll be out of here by around noon time.  Our projected high today is to be 88, then the cold front comes in, and we'll be in the low to mid 80s thru Friday.  It'll be nice sleeping weather!

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are ready to go:  Mookie, here is your mug, ready for your coffee to be poured into it.  (You and I seem to be the only ladies in here lately, so we have to look out for each other, don't we?)

On the serving station this morning:  bagels, bear claws, canatloupe & watermelon chunks, turkey bacon, pork sausage, made-from-scratch buttermilk biscuits, sausage gravy and scrambled eggs.

I heard something really sad and heartbreaking on the news this morning.  Saturday evening, an 11 year old boy was hit by a car (yep, the lady driving, was drunk), and he died at the hospital last night.  When, if ever, will people learn not to drink and drive?!?!  Granted, that boy was probably taller than I, but his life was 'shot out from under him', and I feel for family right now.  Okay, I'm off my SoapBox now.

Everyone have a good morning, and if anyone has any requests for lunch/supper/dinner, just let me know.

Walt put the flags back out this morning, and checked the rain guage.  Said we got maybe a quarter inch of rain.  Very cloudy and overcast, like we're about to get some more, which is expected, according to the noon weather report.  It is definitely cooling off a little bit outside.

For the menu for the rest of the day, I have made some homemade sloppy joes.  (None of the Manwich stuff in here.  Got the recipe from my sister.  If anyone would like it, email me, and I'll send it to you.  Mama and I made it when I was growing up.  Really good.  Of course, for in here, I doubled the recipe.)

To go along with the sloppy joes, you can have fries or chips, and cole slaw or garden salad.

Will walk all the way across the diner for a sloppy joe.  Do like them!  I am going to make my own sj' mix for supper and serve it in whole wheat tortillas.  Yum.

BNSF picking up a little.  Saw more freight than coal yesterday.  Must have most of the flood damage fixed since they are now running trains south to St Joe, etc.  Haven't done that all week.

Sir C - you are too far north for us if you are on 30.  We don't even consider anything past Cornhusker "part of Lincoln".  "Out there" is where all the activity takes place if it is going to happen.  We don't need that!  Same with south of us.  Past highway 2 and we don't own it.  Gotta stay in the bowl!
