Amtrak and Major League Baseball have teamed up to put train travel on deck for families planning to visit friends and relatives this spring and summer with Amtrak Spring Getaway Fares, an All-Star Sweepstakes, and other initiatives.

Amtrak Spring Getaway Fares work like this: When traveling on the same Amtrak itinerary, the first person buys a ticket, their companion rides for half price, and a third person rides free.

Or as Yogi Berra puts it, families can "pair up in threes."  Berra, known for his humorous, word-wrangling quotes, has been selected as a spokesperson for Amtrak, which is a sponsor of Major League Baseball in 1999.  He will be offering similar "Travel Tips From Yogi Berra" to consumers throughout the promotion.  "Taking a train trip and watching a baseball game are both American experiences that are not to be missed," said Barbara Richardson, Executive Vice President responsible for marketing and communications at Amtrak.

A vacation trip on Amtrak -- one of America's best domestic travel values creates warm memories that last a lifetime, Richardson said.

Baseball and train rides are a part of the fabric of the American culture, and one of the best ways to get a true feeling for America is to take a train or attend a baseball game," Richardson said.  "When you take the train, your spring vacation begins the moment you come aboard."

No purchase is necessary for the All-Star Sweepstakes.  Official entry forms, which are available at Amtrak stations while supplies last, must be received by June 8, 1999.   Prizes include: five grand prizes of a trip for two to the July All-Star game in Boston, 10 first prizes of an Amtrak Explore America Trip for two in any one region of the U.S., and hundreds of Amtrak and Major League Baseball merchandise prizes.

Modernized fare promotions helped Amtrak set an all-time revenue record in 1998 by topping the $1 billion passenger revenue level for the first time in the railroad's 27-year history.  The revenue record was driven by the largest ridership increase since 1988.  Ridership also increased by 3 percent during the first quarter, Oct. 1, 1998, to Dec. 31, 1998.
