Well we used to be able to put RT 6 on a card and it would get to my sisters house. Now the post offfice wants a full address.I can't argue with the speed that the letters get through.Mookie has a package coming from Michigan soon.Got to do some chores.Cw thanks for supper tonight.

stay safe

joe

Ah yes...the kinder gentler age when all you needed was "Rural Route #1" or the like.

I liked it when for local mail you put the street address, and then just wrote "City"...and it was delivered!

Raining here now (much to the Dal's chagrin - no walk tonight), and it looks like it's gonna keep it up for a while.  Rain guage is already showing .14" and it only started in earnest an hour or two ago.

I had a teacher in fourth grade who told us that she once got a letter delivered to her that simply had for an address "Jaques," her nickname.  Through some luck collection of circumstances, all the right people handled the letter - people who knew her and her nickname.

I've got no reason to doubt her story - when she told the class about it she was as incredulous as any of us.

When we first moved into this house, we could call other numbers in our exchange simply by dialing the last four digits.

Our mail now goes to Syracuse, some 70 miles for all processing, so the 'city' thing wouldn't get you far.  I'm pretty sure it would have worked here not so many years ago, though.

The Dal's telling me it's time for bed, and I agree.

Until we moved here, I lived in a box in various small towns (and at college), except for one summer that I spent on a rural route, and one summer that I spent in Columbus, Ga. About half-way through my first year in college, began using "t/y," with the college name, city, and state as my return address. On one occasion, a letter that I had sent was returned undelivered, and the assistant treasurer,  who put the mail up, knew which box it went to.

It seems that now every country road has a name (often that of someone who had lived on it), complete with house numbers.

I have read that, back in the thirties, a letter was sent to:

Wood

John

Mass

--and it was delivered! The envelope bore the man's full name, his city, and his state.

Good Thursday morning, everyone.  Jesse!  Long time no hear from:  welcome back.  We need some of you who have been MIA to  come back in.

Thank you to those who expressed concern   regarding my back problems.  People who know me, know that I don't normally complain about any back pain (or any pain, really), so when I say something, you can bet I'm hurting.

We have 41 degrees this morning, and our high today will be about 42.  So not much change in temps today, with cloudy skies.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are ready to go, and on the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  bagels and bear claws.  When I'm feeling a little better and moving better, I'll get back to fixing a good hot breakfast for you all.

Dr. appointment is at 11:45, and I'll leave the house a little before 11 to walk over there.  So I probably won't see you all until late afternoon.  Everyone have a good day, and take care.

Not sure what the temperature is, although it's supposed to stay above freezing this morning, which is a good thing - the 1.10" of rain recorded on my guage at the house since around 8 last night would translate to almost a foot of snow.

Instead we've got a whole new collection of "lakes" all over the place, and a few flooded basements.

CW - patience is probably your best treatment - stress that back too quickly and you'll never get back to normal.

Got word my mother fell and injured her back.  At 83, it's probably about time we talked her into moving out of her apartment and into someplace with some level of supervision.  I know she'll hate the decision, though.

Hot water's ready, and I see a bearclaw with my name on it (creative baker!).

CW, Larry is right, don't put too much stress on your lower back. Do whatever your doctor advises and give it time to heal.

We have roughly a quarter of an inch of snow here on the ground in Sioux Falls, and with the wind blowing out of the northwest, the windchill factor here is about 4 degrees above 0. I'm not looking forward to walking to work later this morning, but I gotta work in order to make ends meet, like anyone else! At the present moment our temp here is 17 degrees.

Overcast, and 39 degrees and dry this morning.  No sign of any snow flurries that were mentioned for us {possibly}, overnight early on.  And the morning paper shows no snow action thru next Monday for us.  And I'm all for that.

Paula, I'm aware when a person has back problems, that certainly is an impediment to doing much of anything.....That problem effects almost anything one tries to do.  So sure hope you get relief soon.

Larry, great picture! Thumbs Up

Just got home a little while ago from the doctor.  He didn't say what he thinks the problem is with my back.  Gave me two prescriptions, 1 for Darvacet, and 1 for a muscle relaxer.  Walt is getting ready to go to the Pharmacy and get them filled for me.  I'm getting ready to go crawl into the bed and nap.

Ryan, good to see you in here.  Hope you get a chance to come in and see us more often.  (Until my back is better, we may need you in here, to help with the cooking and baking. Wink

Everyone take care, stay warm and I'll try to be back in later on this evening.

Afternoon all,

Good day at school today. Nice and cold now with a slight northerly breeze that makes it feel even colder. Looks like it will get worse too.

Have a safe evening.

Good Friday morning, everyone.  I'm feeling a little bit better this morning.  Just took my meds about 25 minutes ago, so I'm not feeling much pain right now.  Just a little bit dizzy.  Not too bad.  Slept pretty good last night.  Imagine I'll be conking out in a little bit, and sleeping for about two hours.

I made the coffee, and it's ready.  There's also some orange juice, milk and hot water for tea, and hot cider.  There's also some bagels, bear claws, and I had some doughnuts delivered, fresh from the doughnut shop.

Larry, how's your Mom doing?  I hope she's doing a little bit better this moring.

You all have a very good morning, and take care.

TGIF!

More Polar Express trains tomorrow and Sunday.

Haven't talked to Mom since she fell.  In fact, if my sister hadn't called to discuss moving her into someplace with more supervision, I probably wouldn't have heard about it at all until one of our Sunday calls.  I suspect she's home, but sore and on very light duty.

Gotta muddle through the day here, then get ready for the weekend.  Decorations for the outside of the house are on my list, too...

Good Friday Morning!

11 degrees and sunny this morning here in Omaha.

I must track down a certain Mr. Blysard and ask him how he likes the idea of getting 2 to 4 inches of snow today in Houston, TX. Evil

I just got a note from our southern snowshoe - said snow has started but wasn't sticking quite yet.  Told him we had a flurry shower yesterday and I took 4 for us and sent the rest to him.  Glad they made it ok.

Tried to change the birdy water this morning and it froze mid-air.  Pretty tough out there today.

Heard you had a little excitement on CU campus last nite.  And it wasn't even the CU students!  Hmm - might want to think about not letting in the riff-raff from local high schools.....Disapprove

I noted that too, of the possible snow in Houston's Ed's area today....Weather is topsy-turvy.....We've not even seen any snowflakes here yet....{this season}.  25 was our temp at about 7:30 this morning, which is the coldest for the season so far.

Nice sunshine here for the most part this morning.  But it will be on the cool side for several days and continued sunshine or partly sunny.....Not bad, so far, for this time of the season.

Yes, I hope Creighton never lets OPS use their facilities again. That was absolutely outrageous. They come and use our brand new sports arena and then shoot the place the up. Riff-raff is putting it lightly.

I'm pretty sure we have some in the forecast, but the businesses around here that benefit from snow are getting a little antsy due to the lack of enduring quantities of same.

If it does, it does...

Where is Blysard???  Still digging out??  I heard on the news that Houston got heavy snows.  He could come to Wisconsin.  We on the south side of the state have just a dusting of snow in spots, but sunny and a little cool.

I've heard on our news about Houston getting snow, just haven't heard how much they have gotten today.   Maybe Ed is out taking more pictures like he did last time, only with a jacket and hat on his head, this time!

Soup pots are on the warmer bar, 1 is vegetable beef and the other is chicken noodle, and the sandwiches are roast, turkey, BLT and PB&J.

Am feeling a little bit better tonight.  Did have a couple of episodes this morning of upchucking, but that is over and done with now.

Everyone have a good evening, stay warm, and take care.

Good mornin right back at ye, Joe, and thanks for breakfast. 48 and cloudy at sunrise in Carolina, with more rain expected later. I finally got my new monitor on line last night, and it is like day and night. I had not realized how bad the old one was. I shall enjoy playing with this one today. Everybody take care and stay warm

Good Saturday morning, to one and all.  It's a very cool temp here in Louisville, with 26,27 degrees outside.  Our high today is only to get up to about 37.  This is below normal for us, at this time of year, according to the meterologists.

Joe, thank you very much for fixing such a wonderful breakfast!  With these new meds I'm taking, I have to eat something, and this breakfast will fit the bill nicely.

Everybody have a good day today, dress warmly and take care.  See you all after awhile.
