Good Afternoon!
Only three classes left (one today and two tomorrow) until the beginning of fall break, which lasts for nine days. I can't wait to relax for a week, although there are some homeworks assignments to be completed over the break too.
The National Weather Service posted an article this morning that said that so far this is the coldest October on record for Omaha. Our average temperature for the month thus far is 11.6 degrees below average.
Off to class now.

Now Joe, how could the cat be the reason no one was in here last night? (Or did she email everyone not to come in here last night?) She's not been in here for a few days, herself.
Got some nice and hot food on the warmer bar for you all:
1. Leftover vegetable soup w/cornbread from last night; 2. Beef stew w/cornbread; 3. Bean w/ham soup, and the following sandwiches: grilled cheese, sloppy Joes, BB&J, and burgers/cheeseburgers.
Rain is out of here, but it is cold, dreary and overcast this afternoon. It'll be a good afternoon to curl up in a blanket and read a good book or two.
Joe, see if you can send that possibility of snow tonight, on up north to you, we're not even ready to have that in our forecast yet (even though they're saying we might see some flurries over the weekend).
Everyone have a good afternoon, stay as warm and dry as possible. Later. . .
Cool morning here....Mid 40's now. Light rain earlier, but just overcast now. To warm up a bit about Sunday.
Brought some leaves down....but yard still pretty and green and I'll take care of the light amount of them with my next mowing. Did I see Carl mention of some snow coming in the Illinois area.....Jen, keep that snow fence active on your east side at least well into December.....Don't need any of that stuff until then.....and really, not even then.
Alas.....Did finally take the Humming Bird feeder down about a week ago. Last sighting was about the 3rd. They know when to leave.

That rain seems to be staying south of us. Hopefully Friday will be a decent day. It's off to elementary school for our annual fire prevention presentations, most of which have an outside component. Cold we can deal with. Rain not so much.
Then it's off to the big NYS EMS conference in Rochester over the weekend.
Got my bearclaw and tea. The funnies look interesting this morning, between trains...

Howdy and thanks for breakfast, 48 degrees and cloudy in Carolina, with an expected high of 60, and rain tonight. I guess that is the stuff CW has now. I am up early chasing an operation from Midway Island on the wireless. I have several contacts in the log already and am having fun on this one. They are to be there through Sunday, so there is still time. As long as the rain is stopped for a while, I shall try the grocery shopping again. After I rouse the wife up at 0830, it's HiHO, it's off to BiLo I go! Everyone take care

Good Thursday morning, everyone. Another rainy morning, with a temp in the low 40s, high today not going up much at all. Did someone come lock the door last night? Must have, since no one was in at all, after I came in the back door. Everything is now cleaned up and ready to go this morning.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are ready, as well as hot water for hot tea.
On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning: bagels, bear claws, oatmeal, toast and an assortment of fresh fruit.
Everyone have a good morning, and I'll see you all later.
JoeKohCw soup and sandwhiches sound great for lunch and supper tonight
Soup and sandwiches are on the warmer bar: vegetable beef, chicken noodle, and cream of broccoli along with grilled cheese, PB&J, and hamburgers.
Mild chili, chicken & dumplings are also on the warmer bar. And in the cooler, there's the following cheese cakes: chocolate, cherry, strawberry and regular cheese cake.
Looks like the heavy rain is out here, and what little is left, should be on its ways out also. But it is still pretty chilly, with a current temp of 49 degrees f.
Rain here too...very light though. Temp this morning was 44. Won't get much higher for our high today. 45 right now. Overcast and a bit of east wind. Must be a Low system passing below us to have the east wind blowing. Leaves are coming down from some big trees on the golf course behind me and the east wind is giving me some of them. But the mulching mower will handle that with the next mowing.
Just started to check out the electrification article in Nov. Trains and it concurs that the Pennsylvania RR was early with it's application of the catenary in the east.
Just a trivia note. Traveling east back in the early 40's....when we switched from the K4's at Harrisburg and had the GG-1's put on for power.....Wow, what a difference. Pushed one back in the seat as it accelerated out of Harrisburg east. Dirt stopped piling up on the window sills too.
Mornin. 57 degrees and rain in Carolina this morning, with an expected high of 64! I guess that means it's time to break out the union suits.... Paula, chicken and dumplings and medium chili would hit the spot. Reckon you could whomp up some cheesecake to go with that? I never have made it to the grocery store yet. Every time I decide to go, rain puts the kibosh on it. I shall give it another shot tomorrow. Everybody take care
well I got some new walking shoes and mother nature sends in some rain.Glad I mowed yesterday.Cw soup and sandwhiches sound great for lunch and supper tonight.Off to take a nap.
Joe
Pretty cool this morning - temperature-wise, that is. I think a few people had a problem with some slippery roads, by the sound of the scanner.
I was a little concerned last night on my way home - as I drove up to Canton (NY) for a seminar I was in and out of some showers. It was atually pretty neat - you could see the rain falling from various clouds all around.
That was at 6. At 10, when I was headed home, the temperature had dropped below freezing, but the roads turned out to be OK.
The firefighters on the board may recognize the name Billy Goldfeder - that was who spoke at the college. Excellent talk by an excellent speaker and worth the 2+ hours on the road to get there and home.
Billy is the main man at http://www.firefighterclosecalls.com and also runs "The Secret List" which isn't really secret, but does keep us up to date on firefighter close calls and worse. It's sad to say that I get several emails from the Secret List each week, noting the line-of-duty death of yet another firefighter. Billy's crusade is to make that a rare occurance.
Now it's time for some work...
Good Wednesday morning, everyone. I hope you all had a very good night's sleep, and are ready for your day. "Good ole Hump Day" for those still in the work force.
We had a very busy afternoon around the home front yesterday. Sarah worked out in her garden, harvesting, and pulling up dead plants, beginning to get ready for the winter, and cutting grass and trimming. While she was doing that, I was busy, busy, busy in the kitchen, fixing beef pasta, and making another batch of chicken & dumplings. While we were doing that, Walt was busy in the Railroad Room.
This morning, we're getting rain (been heavy a couple of times overnight), and will last till sometime around mid to late afternoon, if I remember the forecast correctly.
Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water for tea are all ready to go this morning. On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning: bagels, bear claws, turkey bacon, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy; or, you can have grits or oatmeal & toast.
Already thinking ahead to the menus for the afternoon and evening. I'm thinking, with all the rain, of fixing vegetable beef soup, chili, bean soup, or beef stew. Which would you all like to have? You all have a good morning, stay warm and dry, and take care.
afternoon
Matts doing his homework.yard got a mowing today.Cw thanks for supper.
Afternoon all.....
In Rotterdam, NY, today, after braving the woods of Maine last night, truck is still in one piece. Knew it was going to be interesting when the first sign you see upon entering is "Caution: Watch for Moose on Roadway"....
About 50 here, with intermittent sun and rain, better than Boston was when I went through this morning, though.
See everyone later...

Well, we ended up with about 53 people at Produce this morning. All I came home with was a bag of potatoes. I didn't need any peppers or zuchinni (sp)?. That's all they brought us today.
For our lunch and dinner menus today: Tuesday Mexican Fiesta (thought we'd celebrate Houston Ed's wife Aimee's birthday a day late. Whatever Mexican or Tex-Mex dish you'd like, it's on the warmer bar, along with some barbecued Baby Back Ribs and Mesquite smoked steaks.
You all enjoy your meal, have a good afternoon, and take care. And if you notice the music playing on the CD player, it's John Denver's All Aboard CD playing. There are also other CDs in the player, all of them railroad related sound tracks. Unfortunately, Mr. Denver's life was cut short 12 years ago yesterday, when his experimental plane crashed into the Monteray Bay.
had a nice walk with mamma this morning.mother nature is trying to make the sun shine.she is also giving us a wind out of the north.time for a nap.chores will be a plenty when matt gets home from school.
My earlier post seems to have disappeared! I had a rather lengthy missive written around 0830 and it simply vanished.
Presently, 60 and partly clear in Carolina, headed so they say, to 78 and remaining pc.
MookieTree - do you do your own MOW as opposed to contracting it out?
All of the above. We have a paid track maintenance foreman and a group of volunteers who handle a significant amount of the work, but any major project gets done by a contractor.
The issue in question may not get fixed again until the weather warms up enough to close the gap (it's a pull-apart, albeit about an inch), meaning we'll see a slow order there for the rest of the year.
Good Tuesday morning, everyone. Overslept this morning, so rushing around trying to get things done around here, before Tuesday Produce.
Coffee, juices, hot drinks (cider, chocolate, and hot water for tea are ready to go. On the breakfast/warmer bar this morning: bagels, bear claws, and caramel pecan rolls.
Everyone have a good morning, and if anyone has any requests for me, I'll take care of them when I get back from Produce.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
The day started out in the upper 20's and warmed up a tad - the sun was out until about 11.
But the generator that powers the heat and lights in the cars decided to malfunction, so we told all the passengers to dress warm - some even grabbed blankets. The cars got warmed up a bit before we shut down the genset (injector problem - fuel leaking all over the place), and stayed barely warmer that the great outdoors, but were hardly cozy.
Because we're using an F right now, we push in one direction for all trips. Ten miles of 30-ish , 25 MPH wind through the end door of the baggage car (dutch door - bottom closed) is a real chiller. Since the cars were cold, too, there was no place to lose the chill. I think I'm warmed back up now, though....
On top of that we discovered a broken joint bar and had to nurse the train over that joint every time. MOW will get on it tomorrow...
thanks for supper CW.helping Matt with homework. Will be time to get cleaned up for work tonight soon.
CW, I'll have the Tuna Noodle casserole, one of my favorites, and the trimmings look great also.
I may skip desert. Too much good stuff yesterday.
Partly cloudy in AZ mountains and a high in mid-60's today.
MookieQuentin - are moles like mice - see one and you know there will be more?
Jen:
After getting in trouble with them early this past Summer, I got on the computer and read quite a bit about their life cycle, etc....It seems the possibility of having two after finding one, is real.
I must have had an exceptionally large family of them this past Summer as I believe I eradicated at least 7 of them. May have been different groups, but it was generally in a short time span. When I delete them on the spot, I don't dig them up. if you have mole action, and you observe the forward end of the "tunnel", chances are you will eventually see the ground moving....They are just under the lawn surface digging their way forward. So deleting them is not difficult.
I must keep checking to see if there has been any more action in the area of the recent one. I intend to mow this afternoon and we'll be watching close.
From inside the house here I can see the "tunnel" I rolled down flat is still flat....So that's encouraging. Maybe this time we had just one.
Edit:
It is evening now and I did get the lawn mowed and no sign of any new mole action....Yipee.....!
It looks like no one had any suggestions or requests for lunch/supper, for the rest of the day. So, here's what I have planned, and is now on the warmer bar:
1. Beef noodle casserole w/Italian bread and salad
2. Tuna noodle casserole w/Italian bread and salad
3. Italian spaghetti & meatballs w/Italian bread and salad
Desserts today: Homemade pound cake w/brown sugar sauce, Chocolate cake w/white icing, and Dutch apple pie
Everyone enjoy, have a good afternoon, and take care.
Good Morning! We have 30 degrees here in Sioux Falls and it is snowing once again. We could have a total of 2 to 4 inches on the ground here by the end of this day. Meanwhile, I need to get ahold of my brother-in-law who is a plumbing & heating contractor and tell him that the burner in my furnace has gone out, and I don't know how to relight it. FUN, FUN, FUN!!!!! I would almost crawl back into bed just to stay warm.
well the weather guessers said mostly cloudy today. They didn't look out the window at the rain. But it is october in nw ohio and now we can get just about any kind of weather.Going to go take a nap.Cw thanks for breakfast.I have the pictures for next years train calendar that I make.Unless I see something real good in the next couple of weeks.
Quentin - are moles like mice - see one and you know there will be more?
Good morning and thanks for breakfast. 61 degreees and cloudy this morning, headed for the mid 60s, so they say. I was advised that I volunteered to go grocery shopping today. It's good to find out such things before the food runs out. Everybody take care and stay safe
