So I did get up, and made a succesful hike up to the top of Bierstadt. Lo and behold, guess what I found above 14,000 feet? I was actually snowed upon! ( Did he just utter the "s" word?). OK, so it wasn't a blizzard or anything like that, but the air temp was cold enough (I'm guessing low 40's, or perhaps upper 30's) to have a little snow mixed in with the rainy mist that we had for most of the day.
Unfortunately, somebody did forget to wear his sunscreen. Yes, even on a cloudy day @ 14,000 feet, it's possible to burned, especially when one is as light skinned as yours truly. It wasn't too bad though.
It's been about two years since I've been up a 14er, and I've forgotten just how interesting those last 500 vertical feet are (especially when one hasn't been at that altitude for awhile). While Bierstadt is very much a walk-up, it does get a little vertical, too. Nominally, it's 3.1 miles with 2800 feet of elevation gain (a 17% average grade...not too bad). Of course, if you look at the mountain profile:
you'll note that one actually descends slightly for the first mile or so, and thereafter climbs back up. Thus the average grade after the trip through the valley is more in the neighborhood of 26%. Bits and pieces have to be getting up around the 40% mark. Couple that with less and less oxygen (about 60% of sea level values up around the top), and it makes for a long 7 miles.
So, even though it's an easy 14er, it's still a hike I'm fairly proud of. Hmmm...isn't that just an oxymoron, too. "Easy 14er." Right up there with "Jumbo Shrimp." "Pretty Ugly," and my personal favorite: "Microsoft Works."
At any rate, gald to be back, and it's always nice to come back to some excellent Hawaiian Pizza. Thanks CW!
P.S. MC, the guy banged up the front right fender and the front passenger door. They're both bad enough that the body shop can't hammer them back into shape, so it'll mean getting a new version of each, which could be a bit costly. The gent's insurance agent should be coming on Mon. or Tues., so I'll find out then.
It's interesting that you had issues up north. At work, most of our accidents occur in Larimer, Weld or Boulder counties. That's especially wild when one considers how much work we do in the DTC, and down Castle Rock way. Think I'll start letting friends drive when we head up north!

Another day on the railroad. Aside from the guy who felled a tree onto the track in front of us, we didn't have any problems (he immediately discovered his mistake and moved that part of the tree that was obstructing us). The crews are responsible for cleaning the cars at the end of the day, so it was with some chagrin that I discovered that I'd forgotten to put a new "chad catcher" (really just some tape) on my ticket punch. Not bad if you're only punching each ticket once, but I do a "smiley face" on the kids tickets (they've seen Polar Express and expect more now), so I can create a blizzard when a family has several kids along... Took care of that before the second run.
One of the "features" we offer at the Adirondack is to haul you and your bike on our morning run. When we get to the far end of our trip, we put you off and you pedal your way back to town - probably 8-10 miles through the woods on marked trails. Had my first two such riders today. We also participate with a local canoe rental - paddle down the river and we haul you back. We had well over a dozen canoes and kayaks today. Good thing we had a big crew.

Well GOOD mornin all!!! Rise and shine. The Folgers is ready with a few early mornin donuts for your pleasure. Due to my sterio runnin was quite sore so went bed early hence my early wakeup today. Dont have to bowl til tuesday so I should be ok by then I suppose. Be last summer week befor sweeps. Then be back to 2 a weeks for the fall/winter leagues.
A balmy 72 at 3 am goin down to 66 then thunderstorms later today with some severe with high of 87. Just another a/c day here. Whoa what a summer so far.
Was happy yesterday picked our first yellow tomato from my balcony garden. Good lookin too. I have early girls and tiny tims as well as beans and strawberries. All went well this year so far. Strawberries first year so dont expect great berries but next year should be better crop.

Chris, know how you feel, my mom had the same thing happen to her as she was turning her van left into her drive, someone tried passing on the left (across a double yellow line on top of it). Left front sheetmetal got a little crinkled, guess the car that hit her suffered worse. I get a little worried when someone tries tailgating me, if I hit the hooks, they're going underneath me. Kinda had that in mind when I purchased my Dodge Ram 3/4 ton diesel pickup (four wheel drive models sit four inches higher than the 2wd cousins.). Of course, the way people drive here in Madison (badly), it might be a matter of time.
Well, a gent named Jamie Gold from Malibu won the main event at the World Series of Poker this year, he takes home twelve million dollars for his efforts. His dad has Lou Gerings disease, so it sounds like the money will be put to good use.
Jay, I DID wash my hands before coming in, and many times while here, but this sucker is persistant, I think it might be the flu, but not sure. All I know is that this sucks, and I can't figure out where I picked it up from. Anyway, picked up some more Dayquil and Alka-seltzer nighttime from Walgreens, hopefully that will knock it out of me.
Right now it's 60 degrees outside, headed down to a low of around 52, first cool night in a while, will enjoy it as much as I can, tomorrow it will be 80, and dry. Thanks for the fish, CW, donned the latex gloves and surgical mask while I was heating it up, don't want to give this to anyone (that I like, anyway!).

Well, haven't had anyone run into me while in awhile, so I thought I'd try it again tonight. Was headed to take care of my pups. When I slowed to turn into the driveway, apparently the guy behind me thought that I was obstructing traffic, and proceeded to cruise onto the shoulder on my right side just as I was beginning to make my turn. Doh!
It was a 16 year old kid who thought that I was absolutely terribly at fault to even think about making a turn there. Thankfully, his dad was in the car with him, and he was cool and calm about it. Waited for the state patrol to show up (it was in Unincorporated Adams Co.). Filed a report, kid got ticketed, called the insurance folks and all should be well soon enough I guess. The cruiser has some damage, but nothing that will keep her from operating. And thankfully, it was just a little fender bender, so there were no injuries.
Anyways, I must be off to bed, as I still plan to head up Bierstadt tomorrow. Will probably drop in here tomorrow afternoon. Hope you all have a great evening, and remember to watch for the other guy!

I went to see 844 leave town this morning. We went a little outside of Omaha where it would be going nice and fast. I have to admit, it was probably about the coolest thing I've ever seen. It had to be going about 70 mph, lots of smoke and steam and really blowing the whistle. Absolutely outstanding!. I guess it's gone for good, or at least until next year.
That's the only newsworthy info from Omaha today.
