Boy, we barely dodged that bullet here- absolutely no snow. Just 30 miles south of us, though, it starts becoming measurable.

Lots of locations west and some south of us...got hit with the white stuff, including wind following it...It's real bright here now and not snowing so I believe we've received all we will get today....37 degrees now. Total looks like perhaps an inch or so here and that's it.

Well, everyone, the stew, cornbread and chilli are ready to eat!

Our current temp out is 31, and from early this morning, have a little bit of ice on
our garbage can. Been dropping wet stuff off and on all morning. So light that
you can't tell if it's rain, sleet, freezing rain, or snow. Or just plain rain.

I'm in the process of cooking up another batch of beef stew and chilli for supper
tonight. Won't start the cornbread for supper until about 5:30, so that it will be
hot. If you don't want stew or chilli, I've also got some tuna noodle casserole
prepared for supper tonight.

If Amtrak still had a connection to Louisville;that was the way that she
had wanted to make the trip. And I seriously doubt that she would have
complained too loudly about any delays there !![:D][:D]

Joe;

We did have Amtrak service several years ago,for about a year,or so.
The Kentucky Cardinal;that's the reason they built the "new" spur
into Union Station,so it would terminate here instead of Jeffersonville,In.

I believe the main reason for annullment was the track conditions between
here and Chicago, seems the track wasn't in good enough condition for
passenger speeds. (I'm very sure that there were other reasons also.)
I'm sure ridership was another concern, but every time CW and I went to see
it arrive or depart;there were more than several people using it.

Joe;when are they going to learn about things like: moveable object meets
immoveable object ??!! We've got one of those here in the city that hasn't
lost yet either.[:D]

And then we have this bridge over the river that like to stop barges also !!![(-D]

But you are very correct about it being a safety concern, especially around that
time of day,the school busses,etc.

Hope you're enjoying your supper tonight, whether it's the beef stew, chilli or
tuna casserole. But here at home tonight, Mutt and I enjoyed one of our fav-
orite meals: c______livers. Sure was good.

For dessert tonight, help yourselves to some home made apple or peach
pie w/vanilla ice cream.

Mudchicken;thanks for that link,I had been wondering about them, especially since that
thread awhile back on places rebuilding engines, etc. Hadn't heard if LNAC was still
in the business of refurbing RDCs and switchers or not.

As far as what you mentioned for Joe and their city, maybe Louisville should do something
like that for the one we have. Seems nobody pays any attention to the "Low Clearance" signs !!!
(and maybe the city wouldn't have to keep shelling money out for more signs)

No comment on the other !![:D]

I'm looking to load the lunch box with some meatloaf and steakfries that I can reheat on the sidewall heater later. I could really use some green beans and some Pennsylvania Dutch hard sourdough pretzels too. I have my 6 pack of orange crush in bottles too. We eat GOOD on my crew... My conductor will bring the portable coffee pot and the beef stew I hope. We usually get stuck by the DS somewhere, plenty of time for a quick bite...

My sirloin quality meatloaf is topped with mozzerella and tomato soup for 'icing'. No fried processed potato stuff, no thank you! The doctor never issued a prescription for me to raise my trans fatty acids. I'll have genuine mashed potatoes ONLY - garlic flavored mashed with a cream corn mixed in and a dozen well ovened biscuits (dark bottoms) for mush. You could cut them open too and shovel in a good chunk of the loaf, then dip.

Well, spring has arrived. Officially 30 inches of snow right smack dab in the middle of the state! Interstate 80 closed from Lincoln to West until 4 pm yesterday. So in the land of no weather, we got some weather. But streets are clear, sidewalk and drive are clear and dry. I am happier!

SP - congrats on new job! $ is always good!

A note on the Kentucky Cardinal.

The train was initially set up as part of Amtrak's express operation and had a contract to haul bulk US Mail to a center in Jeffersonville. That business was lost to trucks even before Amtrak decided to get out of the express business. Initially, the train was equiped with a Superliner Sleeper and Coach which ran through from Chicago. When the Superliner cars were pulled off the Cardinal, the KY Cardinal was operated coach only just from Indy to (by that time) Louisville with passengers transfered at Indy.

While the train did have patronage, the revenue was way below the cost and with the constant struggle for adequate funding and ca***o continue the entire Amtrak operation, the run was abandoned. The 30 MPH operation from Indy to Louisville did not help the situation.

Maybe someday[sigh]

Jay,

Thanks for the info. on the Ky. Cardinal,I knew that there were some other reasons
for the annullment, but really couldn't remember them;like all the
newspaper clippings of said train, put up for safe keeping, they must
be safe,Ican't find them. [swg]

On the other; I guess that means dogs have to be bilingual ????
In that case;

Speaking of cats, which I love to do.... this is for CW - co-worker brought in WSJ paper and showed me an article on Lillian Jackson Braun now 92 - author of "The Cat Who" books. Great article! Said she doesn't like the murders that happen in the books, would rather have the books just about the characters. She reluctantly writes about the crime! Said Pick Axe is copied after Bad Axe Michigan - in the thumb - and everything else is down below - seems reasonable to me.

And no, Koko and Yum Yum are no longer around - there were several generations, but now she is too old to take care of them, so they died out many years ago! I'm with her!

Jay - I have often thought if I had another dog - I would get a dachshund or a Mudchicken Scotty dog. But for now, will just keep pictures of them around!

Mookie, guessing that means we won't be seeing any new "Cat Who" books[?] Hate to think about
that; but guess LJB has earned a well deserved rest. Would love to see that article.
