There have been some nasty wrecks there, usually involving a steel hauler who didn't secure their load properly, going around one of the ramps too fast. A few cars have been flattened by the 40,000lb coils when they came off the truck. Lower speed limits and state certification of steel hauler drivers are the results of these accidents.
Honestly, the first bridge they need to build is the bridge on the east side of town, making I-265 whole from Indy to Kentucky, then worry about downtown. At least then, we would have an alternate route....

Randy, while "Malfunction Junction" might not be the "Official" name, here it's the one that Local people use; and there have been more than enough wrecks and semis losing their loads for going too fast on the exit/entrance ramps.(even with ALL the Signs and Caution Lights that have been put up.)
You are SO CORRECT on the "East End" Bridge!! Then there should be one built on the "West End"; where I-265 (Ky 841) hits Dixie Hwy. to make a complete "Circle Freeway", or alternate route.
The "East Enders" are the Biggest NIMBYS in the area, they (and the River Fields area don't want their tranquility disturbed for ANY reason; even if it means more jobs and a better economy; they just want to live "Peacefully" in their "Little Slice of Heaven"! (SNOBS!)
Being Crazy,keeps you from going "INSANE" !! "The light at the end of the tunnel,has been turned off due to budget cuts" NOT AFRAID A Vet., and PROUD OF IT!!

We have a stretch of the 401 between London ON and Woodstock ON that ---even though it has since been widened to 6 lanes wide STILL manages to get closed both ways because trucks end up losing loads and whatnot. Now they are considering on widening the 401 to eight lanes.

The NIMBY thing is everywhere. A favourite of mine invloves the University of Western Ontario's bridge over the Thames R. up here. It is THE only bridge between Oxford Street and highway 22 to the north of the university-----the traffic through there is rediculous during the school year---with all sorts of people kvetching about the traffic---how dare the students go to university--they're taking up to much space on our roads---etc-
But when someone suggested that a bridge be placed on another road through there---NIMBY!!
And we hear the kvetching some more about the traffic----

Well, we were going to fix the pizzas on the grill for tonight, but: we got rained out! So, I've fixed the pizzas in the oven, and they're now on the warmer bar. Tonight's selections:

For dessert, we have a white cake, with white icing, and icing to represent the red stripes of our flag, and a field of blue with little white stars.

One got caught in a street gutter flowing at capacity during a downpour. Looked like a big fish in shallow water until he found a phone pole and climbed out and looked back at the flooded street in confusion.
(3) talked to LC earlier this week, he's more than a little swamped in work and obligations. He may not be around much for a while....
(4) Beware the rhetoric class Willy. Be able to identify the "if you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance..." routine, but avoid emulating it....

If fireworks (mostly illegal) are any indication of the recession, our city doesn't seem to know it exists! We could cover at least half of the deficit for what was spent just here in our neighborhood.
Hope LC is helping the rest of the economy if he is busy.

Good Sunday morning, everyone. We've got a current temp in the mid 60s, with light rain. The rain is supposed to be gone about noon time, and they're saying our high today will only be 70 degrees F.
Yeah, with the amount of fireworks we could hear just around our neighborhood, let alone the fireworks down on the river last night, probably helped our local economy quite a bit, also. We've heard quite of bit of it in the last two weeks, and I'll bet we'll continue hearing them until after Labor Day. That's usually the way it goes around here.
Coffee, juices and our other normal breakfast beverages are ready, even the hot water for tea.
Along with the bagels and bear claws, you also find on the warmer bar this morning:
1. Your choice of bacon or sausage w/buttermilk pancakes and your choice of maple or blueberry syrup, or strawberries w/strawberry glaze and scrambled eggs
2. Bacon or sausage w/scrambled eggs and homemade buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy

Overcast and dry here this morning....But we did get 1/4" of needed rain yesterday and it stopped for many of the celebrations last night. Sun to shine later today.
Had to balance the TV program from Washington D C and Nascar last night. Especially the last half hour of the PBS TV program from D C....That probably was the most extreme sight program of celebrations on TV I've ever seen....The last half hour was wonderful {for the 4th celebration}, by military band music, and all put together with HD TV....absolutely outstanding....Colors unbelievable...!
And the Nascar finish at Daytona....What can one say.....Sure hope no one was seriously hurt....They wen't reporting any at sign off....
Last night the neighbour and I did up some more fireworks for the neighbourhood---another 100+ people showed up. We get licenses for this up here---so they tend not to be having issues. More $$$ for the neighbourhood youth group.
We getting sun today and a high of 24C---going to be another 70% chance of rain for tomorrow again.
Got some weeding to do in the Veggie garden today----then some floor work in the basement

We almost always watch the "Capitol" programs on PBS when they're on. (Memorial Day,etc.)
Well, the 4th went realtivally well. a small family quarrl went on. (involving dad unforanatuly) Is now ironed out thanfully.
Now a georgous day here in western Indiana. 70* with a cool breeze. Also I too would like to thank our vetrans and our current service men and women, for serving us!

At least, I was able to cut another piece to fill my error in. What's really bad is cutting too short; if you cut too long, you may be able to cut it right the second time. Can you sleep nights for thinking about your upcoming trip? I wish you and your family well in your vacation trip to Colorado and back. As the Southern Pacific used to say (a long, long, time ago) "Getting there is half the fun." Thanks for the tips guys! We've been trying really hard to get it done, so it's just been quickly measure once then cut. We had to rebuild the entire door frame. Looks great now though.
We've been usinf that T-111 board. Great stuff, but really expensive! like $115 for 4 sheets!

Regarding fireworks: The local news media reported that there were a total of 45 fireworks stands across Sarpy County, Nebraska (my county) this year. No wonder the air was thick with smoke and haze last night. Fireworks are illegal in Omaha (Douglas County), but people just go into Sarpy County, buy fireworks, and then bring them home to Omaha and shoot them off. The police know they can't do anything about it.
Otherwise, there's not much more happening here, so I hope everyone has a good day.

Walt.....It really was a presentation of beauty....! And the music with it and the sound of all the fireworks going off, made the program one of a kind. Previously, I've thought the presentation from Australia on various occasions, has been most spectatular, but to my experience, this topped that.

I haven't read or heard anything that states factually that July 4th is often below normal for temperatures. A lot of people in Omaha actually seem to associate July 4th with the hottest weather of the year.
Our National Weather Service office posted some July 4th climate facts for the last 12 years. The 150 year average high for the first week of July is 86.9 degrees in Omaha. An average of all the highs for the last 12 Fourth of Julys comes out to be 86.5 degrees, which is pretty close to normal. Our hottest was 110 degrees in 1936, so it can certainly be much above average too.
The rain has finally ended here in our area. But it is still very humid/muggy outside. Also cloudy and overcast. I think our current temp is about 71 degrees.
Sunday Dinner menu:

I wish I could come around more often than on holidays. Like LC in his area, I have my hands full with the recession. It is my hope that we will see some light at the end of the tunnel soon. Unfortunately with the reset of the 5 year ARMS in the next year or so I fear it to be a fast freight not the end of the tunnel we are seeing.
I do miss Miss Miss Paula's coffee and the conversation in the forum.

Every year, we see, in the Salt Lake Tribune, reminders that anything that lifts its fire off the ground (even bottle rockets) and exploding devices such as firecrackers (from the smallest to the biggest) is illegal in Utah. So, the fireworks sellers in Evanston, Wyoming, load up on the stuff they know they can sell to Utahns who come over to buy that which is illegal in Utah. You can be arrested if you are found in possession of the illegal stuff.
There are also listings of the areas in which ALL fireworks are forbidden because of extremely high danger of fire.
There are public displays of aerial fireworks for both the Fourth and for the Twenty-fourth of July.
The sale of fireworks is forbidden except for a few days before and a few days after each of the two holidays (the main body of the pioneering Latter Day Saints arrived in Utah on 24 July 1847), and the days they may be set off are also restricted greatly.
We have had a noisier year in our neighborhood than what we had last night, but we expect more noise on the Twenty-fourth, since this holiday is far more important than the Fourth.
Where I grew up, in South Carolina, Christmas and New Year's was the season for fireworks; we did not put much stock in setting fireworks off in the hot month of July. Grocery stores would lay in supplies of various fireworks, including lady crackers, regular firecrackers, roman candles, sky rockets, pinwheels, cherry bombs--almost anything that could be sold--before Christmas.

As for the question of illegality--we're covered by license up here---although a few years ago suggestions were made about making all and any fireworks illegal---reason? The Toronto gang issue. They had gang members using the fireworks as weapons-----that was stepped on by another mayor who asked what would occur if somebody picked up a 2X4---would we ban that?-----OOPS---things got awful quiet then

Willy....Our highest avg. temp is reached about the 3rd week in July for this area of central Indiana...Believe that figure tops out at: 86 degrees. Believe we're at about 85 degrees now for our daily avg. high temp.
1936 seems to have been a year of weather extremes....Believe some excessive heat numbers were reached in this area then, and back in our home area of Pennsylvania, we had a very distructive flood in the nearby City of Johnstown. Many fatilities and the flood was of course weather caused.....{and again in 1977}....Worst one was 1889. Over 2000 folks killed in that one...{The original "Johnstown Flood"}. Specs. can be seen on the internet.
I remember onece seeing a sign of high water on the Ohio river down near Louisville that occured about 1936. We were arriving into Louisville via boat having made the trip from Madison. Stayed overnight and went back to Madison the following day.
Got a t'underin' boomer show up about 5-10 minutes our fireworks finished last night----talk about close. The funny thing was there were no mentions of t'underboomers or showers until AFTER the dang things showed up and monsooned on us!! Then it said----there was a 20% chance of A shower.
The last fireworks show had approx. 140 people show up----even more money for our neighbourhood youth group---
