Well, so ends another 2 hrs. and 43 mins. of observations of the Roanoke Web Cam. Yesterday, after a particularly stressful and busy 5 or 6 days I put the double CD "Rolling Stones: 40 Licks" on, and watched the camera for about 2 hrs., and found it very relaxing. So today I listened to "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits" and "ElvIIs 2nd To None".

Tomorrow starts 4 days with 28 hrs of TV coverage of a major Curling event here in Canada, so I won't be looking at the computer much at all. I still have more double CD's so I may try this again at some point in the future.

I personally have never before counted out a 171 car train. Frankly, I always had a tiny suspicion that reports of trains that size were exaggerated. But now I know better.

It was a needed change and a nice way to spend an afternoon.

A little after 9:00 pm tonight, and the web cam is still broadcasting in color. Does this happen often?

It has apparently run all night in color. Someone else said they thought it had to do with capacity issues on the system it is hosted on. If there are no other demands, then the camera can continue to run in color.

Whistling  Bruce; Curling is an interesting  sport to me. When they are sweeping the ice , does that generate a large charge of static  electricity ??  Just curious.

.....When the "sweepers" come down the ice to do their "sweeping", how are they able to stand, and move around on the ice without slipping or falling....?

Semper,

With regard to that VMT cam, like you, I spotted the freshly painted red caboose last week coupled to a pair of old diesels with a short string of hoppers backing up from the hotel cam so I switched to the herky jerky cam, and as the train approached the camera it went down and when I rebooted it, the last few feet of the caboose was visible for a second or two

I think your conclusion is right on the money about the cam being in collusion to prevent us from catching a close up of those critters.

All i can say is we finally got the good one back . I think the museum cam is a waste of time because you can never depend on it to be up and running when you want it .   RON

It's 12:30 AM EST and the hotel cam is still in living color!  Will miracles never cease?

Each time this afternoon I've turned to the hotel cam I've seen a train. The last peek, was in the last half our {from the west cam under the bridge}, there was two trains....and on the far track was the red caboose, but I just got a glimpse if it....as the train on the near track was covering it....

Yep, B&W now, but it is as smooth as ever for me... I guess sometimes an automobile passing directly under the camera will appear a bit jerky, but for the most part it is updating at a very high rate... not like the VMT cam that updates every 2 to 20 seconds (if it happens to actually update at all!).

Lights indicate a WB train coming on tracks 2 or 3 to the northmost track to the west.

OK, Found the Problem..................... There seems to be TWO urls for the Web Cam. Both use the same numerical sequence up thru "RRC"      RRCMov is still smooth as normal. The other one, which I haven't seen before, is RRCtrainsDOTcom.......

Hey, Harve - Fancy meeting you here!

For the record, at 1940 the cam is B&W and "stop motion."

Ewwwww!  Look at the webcam!  WTF, man?  Dude, like, seriously, WTF!?  That is incredibly ugly, jerky, and low resolutionny.  Why did they do that!?  Ugh...I'd take the old cam over this, even with the periods of downtime it had.

I can still notice the Slight Tap On Petal people just as well, though.  And it ain't just the small vehicles...big trucks just slow down a number of times as well (a couple didn't even appear to slow down).  I'm surprised there ain't a cop taking full advantage of the situation (and even the camera).  They could even forward some of the profits to help the camera operation stay maintained.

EDIT-I tried that URL trick a guy above me ntioned.  It does restore the real-time motion, but, alas, the quality is permanently downgraded.

kolechovski,  What URL are you watching? I am watching at  http://128.173.197.94:443/RRCmov.

As stated above posts the URL http://128.173.197.94:443/RRCtrainsDOTcom IS a Very Poor picture.
