Back again, but the frame rate is low and seems to be varying between 5 and 10 frames per second. Saves bandwidth, but makes for jerky motion and is a degradation over what it used to be.
Within 24 hours of having written my previous post, I noticed that the Roanoke Rail Cam is totally non-functional. I hope they get it back up and running. Like I mentioned before, it is one of the nicest railroad themed web cams out there. Especially for me since I am a fan of he Norfolk Southern Railroad and Roanoke Virginia. It was sad because I (we) didn't get to see any of the N&W J class 4-8-4 #611 steam engine action over the holiday weekend. Oh Well.
Yes, it is back, but as you mentioned, it is unstable. I get about 5-10 seconds of video and then it locks up. So it doesn't look like it is on your end. It looks like they are having trouble with their internet connection or their router or even their video card. Just guesses on my part. They'll get it fixed. They always do.
It's BAAAAaaack!
But kind of unstable for me, keeps disconnecting... sometimes reconnects automatically, but sometimes I have to click the STOP button (the square) and then click PLAY (the > button).
The Roanoke Rail Cam has been down ever since my grandsons went on summer vacation from school. At least a couple of weeks ago. I have written four e-mails over the last couple of weeks to the link on the web cam site asking for ways to make the camera better. So far the only response I have gotten was from the last e-mail that was an automatic response. It said....
I will be out of the Office on Monday, June 27, 2015 returning on Thursday, July 1, 2015 on business. I will have limited email accessibility but will be checking email periodically. If this is an emergency please contact the sales office at 540.853.8203 or call my cell phone at 540.580.4160. Thanks! I was thinking that maybe someone tripped over the power cord to the camera's server on the way out the door for summer vacation.
Also, Google Chrome no longer supports the plugin that VLC uses (the recommended player linked by the camera's web site) so I thought that was my problem. But, I have tried other players and it doesn't work with them either. So I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. It's too bad because I really like the Roanoke Rail Cam, Norfolk Southern, and Roanoke.Good Luck
me too
It's been down for me as well.

Has the cam been down for a few weeks for others as well? Just curious if it's on my end. Thx.
HA! I was absentmindedly watching TV when I suddenly realized that the train might be coming back to Roanoke... so I ran the viewer again and noted the tail end of the train backing into view. So I got to watch the return, too.
Not nearly the crowd present for the return!
I have to admit that although I am glad any Steam Locomotive is again active, and I am sure that there are those that love this particular engine... I find it to be an ugly excuse for a Steam Locomotive. All that shrouding and streamlining hides the beauty that is characteristic of the beast it is within. At least the side rods and a portion of the valve gear are visible. I am sure it sounded wonderful none-the-less... too bad the video feed doesn't include sound. (At 702.04 miles between it and me, the natural sound was not detectable here.)
wow that was sure cool to see'
Some thing special going on in Roanoke... people gathering trackside! (5/30/2015 3:00 PM CDT)
EDIT:
Ah HA! N&W "J" #611 made a stop at the depot... left, WB, at about 3:35 PM (CDT)
I don't watch as long as I used to, but I do check in a couple of times a day... usually long enough to see at least one train go by. They sure do travel a lot faster than they used to!
does any body watch this cam?
looks like it rains alot in virginia. i see snow in the daylight and rain at night.
Norm , your link works fine, also the (little red caboose) is still alive and rolling. Yesterday our web network was not working because suspected copper thieves cut the fiber cable Northern Az. was shut down. The financieal dealing took a bad hit because of this. This was cut north of New River wast of I-17. 6 hrs all was fixed. So far no Oil Trains were derailed today in Arizona , But the day isin't over yet.

thanks for the update
The tracks run due East/West. East is to the left of the scene. The camera faces west-southwest.
If you go to Google Earth and enter these coordinates:
37°16'25.18"N, 79°56'22.24"W
that is the location (approximate) of the camera; it be the white rectangle on top of the overhead walkway from the Hotel Roanoke (on the north) to the Wachovia Building (on the south).
At present, the Google Earth image is old. The tracks were updated just last year and there are slight differences in the layout. Still 4 tracks, but the signal bridges and towers are gone, and the switching arrangement is different.
It seems to me that the traffic is down since the upgrade to the tracks, but maybe that is because the upgrade allows faster movement and they are not in the scene as long as before!
If you watch long enough you will see at least 3 different cabeese used as "Shoving Platforms" for a reverse move that goes to a couple of customers to the southeast. One is usually covered hoppers and oil tanks and the other will be mostly gondolas. I used to see a caboose outbound (east) between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM and return (West) between noon and 3 PM almost daily (note the overlap, the job takes about an hour), but that seems to have changed recently and I don't know why the change or when they might be expected now. The caboose is almost always on the west end of the train (leading on the return trip).
In the past there have been some Autumn "Fall Colors" excursions that boarded passengers at the museum that is off screen to the left (east) behind the camera. These excursions have sometimes been powered by a steam locomotive.
Mostly you will see coal unit trains (loads east bound and empties west bound) some (nearly) unit automobile carrier trains, and other more general freight.
Since the shops are to the east (left, behind the camera) and there is a large yard to the west (Right) there are often movements of multiple engines going one way or the other. And many MOW work trains/equipment on their way out of the yard to a job somewhere else in the AM or coming home in the PM.
There is another camera at the Virginia Museum of Transportation that views the same tracks, but looking back at the Hotel camera from the west. The two cameras could see each other (they'd be tiny dots!) if it weren't for the pedestrian bridge that crosses the tracks halfway between them. The VMT cam is both worse and better than the Hotel cam... It is worse in that it only updates every 2 to 60 seconds and often seems to freeze on a scene and just keep updating that image. It is better in that it is much closer to the tracks, mounted lower, and there are security lights in the area that illluminate the scene at night.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
thanks for the link i never was able to see this befor.
please tell me what rrs im looking at and how many trains run a day. thanks
The cam was down for me beginning around Monday, but was back up yesterday. Working fine since then.
Typical cornpataters!
I tried it using my Favorites link and it would not work... URL timed out. I tried to PING it and got no response.
Checked my link and it shows the same URL address/subaddress as Norm's...
Just to prove it don't work, I clicked Norm's link.
It worked just fine.
So I tried my link again and it works just fine, too.
Remember, computers are neither smart nor dumb... They are just plain MEAN!
Thanks Norm! (I was going to put some sort of Smiley here, but can't figure out which one is appropriate.)
