Now that we've been spoiled by the newer cams (Roanoke, Netherlands, and others) one might wonder if and when the signature Trains cam at Rochelle might eventually be upgraded.  Maybe even with sound.

I agree that the propane tanks are for switch heaters . I don`t think our hotel cam will be around much longer . It will soon be a pain to them and they stop doing anything to keep it on line .   RON

I wonder how long the hotel management will put up with that cam they agreed to install?

I'm sure it's been asked before but I must have missed the post..... Does anyone know why those white propane tanks are located along side the tracks?

I can't speak with any authority about the white tanks, but I assume they are propane for running the switch heaters.  Roanoke does get snow, freezing rain and freezing temperatures and the switches would need some method of keeping them clear of ice because they appear to be remote controlled where there would not be a person to check on them before attempting to change their position.

A few weeks ago, when the spider webs were a pain, I spoke with a woman at Hotel Roanoke.. She got the problem resolved posthaste. The camera is inside the walkway, hence the lousy view in the afternoon because of the sun.

A bit of electronic investigation revealed the camera is not the responsibility of Hotel Roanoke, but of the local university. I doubt they have the time and personnel to keep it running 24/7.

Going through withdrawal myself. WAA! Big tears.

Huh? Ron ; withdrawal syndrom~~~ had already set upon me ~~ Snow not rain.  VMT cam jerked a stacker through town at 21:20 something. Need for some comfort food, such as chocolate cake  - chocolate icing and coffee. Then hunt up Sunday River vid of articulated  N&W steamers  going through Thurman .  ~~~~ Soothing.

Maybe good 'ol Jim Wrinn will look into this for us? Don't you all think me should be happy to give us a hand with this problem? After all, we DO buy just about every darn thing he sells, don't we?

Well, don't get you hopes up, he could care less about us, just what we have in our wallents and how much of it he can extract.

2011.01.25

I brought up the hotel cam at 10:01, just in time to see the last 20 cars of an EB mixed consist with the bright red caboose bringing up the rear.  This is the one that has been recently painted with the white roof and modern NS stallion logo that I think was used by Santa when he came to town. I might be wrong, but I think the car number for this caboose is 55555. Had I opened the VMT cam, I would have had a chance to see the caboose pass by, but no such luck.

The center of this map is the location of the webcam.  Just to the right is the Link Museum, further right is the NS shops (home to the business train).  To the left is VMT (location of another webcam), and if you scroll further left, you'll see the yards.

Follow the double track east and you're going over the Blue Ridge grade and on to Lynchburg.  I still haven't figured out where the helper siding called "Boaz" was located.

With all these different sightings, I just took a peek over at the hotel cam....and the cubbard was bare, but there is {what I believe}, is a MOW vehicle backed into the fence in the parking area...That's been there for several days.

Interesting sight on the web cam about 13:30 EST. There were both EB and WB mixed cargo trains passing by at the same time. The correlation between the types of cars was amazing. It would be real interesting to have compared the manifests of each train to see if the loads were going one way and the empties the other. Of course each train had both loads and empties.

You will see meet's in real life between stackers or unit trains, but I can't recall the last time I ever saw two so perfectly matched mixed consists trains.
