Evening all....

A very rare event happened today, we got lake effect snow in Milwaukee.  Doesn't happen often, but got 14 inches at the airport, with less south of there, about a dusting in Burlington.

Did some rewiring of my parents garage Sunday, now the openers have their own outlets with no extension cords hanging from the rafters, and I have another outlet to plug my truck into that doesn't require finding a three-prong adapter or running a cord all over the place.  Already discussed next project with dad, will be thinning out a small wooded area, removing dead and unwanted trees, and providing more area to play in with the ATV.  Will be using a week of vacation that I need to use up before June, probably in May.

Hopefully back on the road tomorrow, provided that the clutch in the semi got fixed.  Last Thursday, it wouldn't release, so had fun limping truck to shop, thinking the throwout bearing may be failing, so we shall see how fast they change it, we used to do it in 8 hours, back in my mechanic days.

See everyone later.

.....Randy....that sounds like a bit of hard work.  Assuming the tranny must come out to get to it...and then reassemble it all.

Yes, it's kind of a pain, the rear engine mounts have to be unbolted to get the bellhousing off, then the thousand-pound tranny slides out.  Not sure what else is in the way down underneath there, it can get crowded with the air tanks and piping.

Forgive me Randy, but I don't want to be near where a 1000 lb transmission is sliding anywhere!

We're at "0" now.  Did I miss spring already and we're back to winter?  LOL!  The Weather-guessers are talking 43 for a high on Wednesday.  Time to break out the shorts!

Now for a midnite snack...

Good Tuesday morning, all.  I've got sterile gloves on, along with a face mask, so I don't infect any of you.

So far, the cough medicine is only making me sleepy (well, it's helping ease the cough a little bit, but not much, so far).

Coffee, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready; and on the warmer bar this morning:  oatmeal, toast, turkey bacon, sausage patties, and homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, grits, and bagels & bear claws.

Enjoy your breakfast and your morning.  See you all later.

And to those of you who have given me "Get Well" wishes:  Thank You!!

Good morning. It's 21 and clear in Carolina this morning. I have been up most of the night fighting an attempt to take over my computer.... It got through my windows firewall somehow, and Norton caught it , said it blocked it, but still it got in. My spywarebegone identified it, but can't seem so kill it. Wish me the best on this one. If need be, I will save and format to get rid of it..... Have a great day.

^~^ - Ah got mah ears on.....

Tom- maybe you should give your puter some of CW's meds!  (I can only say it is early)

Randy/Dan - we are looking at 60 for Thursday, so maybe you will get a little bit of that.  We don't have the snow to melt, so we will probably hit it easily.

Q - you are there!

Joe - I am watching your Morning Joe - very lively today!

Larry,
It could always be worse/colder but I tolerate cold better than heat.

CW I guess I missed that you were under the weather.  I hope you feel better!

Mookie,
Send some of those 60s up this way via the BNSF will ya?  Tack a box car or two onto a Unit Coal train and I'll find it.

Yes, we're still here J, just not as active yet.....Did get new meds yesterday and so still trying to get back to "normal".

Nice sunshine here today....{but cold to start the day...11.5}, and it is headed for a warm up now.

Those dozens of Robins that landed here Sunday should appreciate the warm up.

Went to Cubs - Diamondbacks game yesterday, 88 degrees and bright sunshine. Now you understand why they come here to get in shape for the regular season.

Back up in AZ mountains today, cooler but will be 68 this afternoon. Have a good one everybody!

Morning All,

Larry and Joe, thanks for the kind words. Sports photography is a lot different than railroad stuff. I can't wait until I have some free time for shooting trains again.

CW, I hope you get to feeling better soon. A lot of my co-workers have been sick lately. Fortunately, I seem to bypass a lot of the illness. I must have a strong immune system. *Knocks on his desk*

As for weather...all I'll say is that if any of you back east would like to ship us some of that snow, we'd gladly accept. It's only March, and there are already fire warnings in effect thanks to temps in the 70s, high winds and really, REALLY dry conditions. The forecast for the week doesn't include any precipitation, either. Sad

Yep - A local fire department got the unofficial "first grass fire of the season" award for our county this morning.  Not a good sign.

Good morning and afternoon to all. I was having a great time checking up on the outside world via my computer when I realized that I was late for a dental cleaning appointment (a mile and a half away) I hastened over, and the hygienist did take me despite my being late. So much for misremembering the proper day of an appointment.

Randy, I donā€™t envy anyone who has to take a tranny out. Of course, the professional mechanics should have no problems at all. Going on thirty years ago, I replaced the throwout bearing in a pickup. At least, nothing had frozen, but the bearing made a horrible noise every time I shifted gears. Our shade tree out front died, so I am no longer a shade tree mechanic.

Thanks for the breakfast, Paula. Iā€™m confident that you kept your undesirables away from all of us. Maybe the cough syrup is supposed to make you sleepy so you sit or lie down and rest.

Our morning temperature was about fiftyā€“with a strong wind out of the south, which presages a stormā€™s coming in from the north. It was nice walking with the windā€“but I had to come back. Iā€™m glad I did not have to drive through Parleyā€™s Canyon (I-80 to the east of Salt Lake) this morning; when we have strong winds in the valley, we can have gales down the canyons. RJ, with the expected bad weather this weekend, I donā€™t think we will make it up to Ogden Saturday. Ricki still wants to try the Frontrunner out, but it seems that we just havenā€™t been able to plan to take it up and back.

Johnny, Sorry to hear that you might not be able to make it. I am planning on making it down there come H**l for High water. Its the highlight of my year Tongue A friend of mine who will be in Orem is thinking of driving to Sandy, and then taking Trax to a point where he can change between Trax and the Front Runner and is going to come all the way up for the day. From the Forecasts I have seen, it doesn't look too bad for a trip down. the only roads I have to worry about it from Rock Springs to the state line though, after that, Utah is great at keeping the roads open.Big Smile

Good afternoon, everyone.  Yeah, the cough medicine is terrific, making me sleep quite a bit.  That's about all I've done today is sleep.  (In between coughing attacks.)

Chris, I enjoyed seeing your photo.  Even though it's not a railroad photo, it is still a very good photo!  You really do nice work.

Everyone have a good evening, and I hope you all can find something to eat.  Right now, my appetite is nonexistant.    Just thirsty as can be.  And thanks for the additional Get Well wishes.

Since Paula seems to be out of action for a while, I will serve dinner for tonight. I've had a pot of spaghetti sauce cooking on the back burner for the last three hours, and all I need to do is dump some pasta into a kettle of boiling water. If anyone would like to know what my recipe for spaghetti sauce consists of, well here it is:

Brown 1 pound of ground beef and chopped onion in a large sauce pan. Add to that 1 large can of whole tomatoes, 1 can of tomato paste, 1 jar of small mushrooms, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and add enough salt, pepper and sweet basil to taste, and water-about half the tomato can full of water. I would proportion the above ingrediants according to the number of people you want to feed. Cover and simmer - then prop up cover and allow the entire mixture to cook for at least three hours. Chef

I'll send a pot of New England clam chowder over--fatback (after the lard is rendered, take the cracklins out and sprinkle them on the chowder when you serve it), flour, diced Irish potato, chopped green onions, milk, and clams.

Good Wednesday morning to one and all.  Thank you to all who have pitched in the last couple of days, to keep the place going!  I'll be needing to depend on you all for a couple more days, at least.  Still have quite a bit of medicine to finish, and that puts me out.  I'm beginning to feel better.  The coughing is decreasing some, and not hurting quite as bad.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate and hot water for tea are ready.  On the warmer bar this morning:  bagels, bear claws, sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, oatmeal and grits for those of you who like them.

I think, while I'm still half way awake, that I'll get lunch and supper started in the Crock Pots:  1 Crock Pot will have Pork Chop Abracadbra in it, and the other Crock Pot will have bean and ham soup in it.

Everyone have a good morning, enjoy your breakfast, and take care.  I'll see you all later.

Good morning- we have 27 degrees here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and it is supposed to warm up to about 43 this afternoon. Thursday and Friday we are supposed to have a temp as high as 52 degrees. I have the day off today and plan to go for a long walk, I'm gonna try looking up a couple old friends on the campus of the University of Sioux Falls.

Paula, I too am glad to hear that you are doing somewhat better. If you feel like you've been coughing your insides out, well I can sympathize with you on that. I too have been there and done that more than once and it's pretty miserable, no fun at all! I hope you will stay in bed today and get some rest. Let the rest of us worry about serving lunch and dinner here. I think I will stay here long enough to clean up this place after breakfast.

A mild morning here and warmer temps will occur as we head into the weekend.  On and off sunshine this morning.

Railroad building in Muncie....!

Our morning paper has an article of plans to build a rail extension off the NS Frankfort line....back into our newest Industrial park to the Brevini plant.  This installation {the plant}, is brand new and still in process.  The company is moving it's operations from Chicago and when up and running they expect to employ up to 450 workers.

Their product is wind turbine gear sets.....A product, when assembled weighs about 23 tons, hence they say railroad access is needed.

Evidently this requirement was known since the project started...{a year or so ago}, but this is the first of any info. on the RR connection to the public.

Of course this is bringing complaints from nearby land owners, etc.....But it sounds like it will really happen.

I'm guessing it will require a mile or two of R of W  to get from the NS connection back into the park...{Brevini plant}.  Should be possible with minimal problems as the lay of the land in the area is flat to rolling terrain.

This location is northwest of Muncie at  route 332 and I-69.

NIMBY.

It's funny, though - they probably wouldn't mind if they built a road into the plant for the same purpose.  But a railroad?  And they'll probably only move a few of those out a week - meaning one or two moves at most.

Then again, maybe other companies will take advantage of the rail connection and build - more jobs!

Sunny and cold again today.  Never did get the mulch on my bulb garden - maybe I'll get a warmish day with no wind this weekend.  The plan is to put down two layers of newspaper (two sheets) and cover it with mulch.  Normally I do it in the fall, which lets the paper break down a bit.  The bulbs push right through, but it keeps the weeds down pretty well.  It's a trick my daughter learned while helping out with gardening at the Syracuse zoo.

Morning All,

Another high fire danger day here. There's a good fire going down by Ft. Carson because of yesterday's fire conditions. The forecasters are calling for the possibility of rain on Saturday, but I'm not planning to hold my breath.

On the bright side, it sounds like La NiƱa is starting to weaken a bit, and that may shift the storm track a bit. Hopefully we can get into a wetter pattern soon.

Alright. Off to tackle some plans. You all have a great day!

To my thinking, it's a win / win situation.  Location is outside the city by several miles and just populated by small farms / other country buildings.  Meaning no major disruption of the area...Pass through culverts could be installed to get across tracks on farming lands, etc...

A business of this potential is certainly great for this area as we've lost major amounts of heavy manufacturing plants in these past decades.

And as Larry said, this rail access can only be a plus for potential companies that might take a look at the area.

I've checked both Crock Pots and everything is ready.  Both pots have been turned down to the low setting, so everything will keep warm.  (Plus, there are two more Crock Pots already on low, that are in the kitchen, slow cooking for tonight's dinner/supper.)  And I made some fresh cornbread, and have just taken it out of the oven.  You can find it in the broiler oven on the front counter.  I've got the setting on that set on 'warm' to keep the cornbread warm.
