Mookie
Well, so far, it is white and covers the brown very nicely.

Yep - got a whole half inch at my house, but everything is "pretty" again.

Hey, hey, hey:  look who's back!!  Joe, now that we have power back, it's good to see that you are also back!  Our power went off Wednesday afternoon at 5:15, and came back on last night at 7:30.  When Mutt was able to get the puter booted up (I was busy in the kitchen, preparing supper for the three of us), what does he find?  The forum is down for maintenance.  So just now getting back in here, after I found this morning, that the doors were still locked and the place still down for maintenance.

It's good to know that we were missed around here; very nice and comforting to know that we have friends who miss us when we aren't around.  And believe you me, we missed being here with all our friends!  Definitely glad to be back.

I'll be back in about an hour, to post the menu for today.  Everyone take care, and see you all later.

Surprising to me, no chatter in the Diner of the commuter airliner crash last night, especially our friends from N Y.

Been keeping track of the coverage, and had the opportunity to listen to the dispatch traffic on-line.  It's one of those things we in the local fire service can think about, but can't really plan for.  While it's not far outside Buffalo, it's still a small town (listed around 1,100 people).

Sad for all.  I can't imagine what it would have been like to be at the airport, waiting for someone to arrive, and get word of the crash.

Yes, it is horrible to hear of such a tragedy. I give thanks to God that Captain Sullenburger was able to land his plane in the Hudson. The last two times I flew, last December when we were on our way to Baton Rouge via Houston, and six years ago last month when I had to go to Houston and back, I was thankful to see the de-icer being applied to the wings before we took off from Salt Lake City. And I think of the tragedy in Washington, D. C., in 1983, when the Air Florida plane was forced down into the Potomac--a cousin of mine was on that plane, which he had had just time enough to catch on a business trip.

Good Saturday morning, everyone, and Joe:  Happy Valentine's Day to you and everyone.  The heart-shaped pancakes look great this morning, Joe.

I keep thinking about the people who were on that plane, and their families who were waiting for them.  And remembering them in my thoughts and prayers.

We have a temp of 42 this morning (computer home page shows 39 for the current local temp), and supposed to get to the upper 40s, with mostly cloudy skies today.  May see some sprinkles or light rain in a couple, three hours; but not supposed to be much.

At one of the local White Castle restaurants, there's to be a wedding taking place sometime today.  Not sure I'd want to be married at a White Castle, though.  Guess instead of wedding cake, the bride and groom will have sliders?????

Everyone have a good day, take care, and see you all back tonight for our pizza fest.

Morning and thanks for breakfast. Currently, 55 degrees and cloudy in Carolina today with a good chance of rain. Paula, when an inlaw's brother passed away a while back, they had the family visitation at a Shoney's of all places, so I guess anything is possible. I much prefer the idea of a wedding, tho.

On that note, yall take care

married at a White Castle

After watching the movie "27 Dresses," I'm prepared to believe anything.  All you need to see to see what I mean is the segment where she models the dresses she's worn as a bridesmaid...

Son and family arrived a little later than planned, but we still got some supper at a little diner nearby (with a river motif, instead of railroads) and enjoyed some time with the baby.  She's almost a year old, is that close to walking, and absolutely loved the electronic keyboard I got a while back to tinker around on (I wouldn't call what I can do on a keyboard "playing...")

Of course, after sitting in the car for eight hours, she wasn't tired, so her bedtime came and went with little event.  She finally nodded off around midnight.

They're headed to my daughter's this AM - son to attend a Syracuse game with SIL, while DIL and baby visit with daughter.   I'll be down later for chili.  The baby shower is tomorrow.

The weather, meantime, is clear and cold (6F, with a low of 2F overnight), but there's some snow on the radar that'll arrive later today.  It's cold enough that the roads shouldn't be bad.

I've never had a White Castle - are they good?  Have had an Inn and Out Burger - that was the best.  And I have eaten at a Shoney's - KC area and it was very good.  We don't have anything like that here.

Tree - pictures to follow?  If you get "our" snow - it is very wet and very heavy.  But "our" snow may have fallen apart by now.  I know Iowa got a chunk of it.

Must snag some breakfast and work on the crossword puzzle.  Let's see.....Blizzard bit....(Flake) and Decreaser - this one had me going for awhile (Iron)

J.....I believe "your snow" really did fall apart in our area.....Did receive a "skiff'" of the stuff overnight that just layed on the grass and is already melted.

Overcast here and mid 30's now.  To be cloudy today and perhaps all any snow activity has now gone east of us.

Shoney's....Did they declare bankrupcy some time ago....I know our former Shoney's restaurant is now a branch bank here in Muncie.

White Castle....I'm as you J, have never ventured to try any of those....In our area, Steak 'n Shake steak burgers are my favorite burgers.  They have expanded on east in the past decade or two....all  the way to the east coast.  First had their fries {the best}, and burgers, and baked beans too down in Daytona Beach, Fl., about 1960.

They have been in the Indy area for more than 40 years and now right here in Muncie at least a decade or so.....Just this last week they really had a promotion plus, in place....Jean and I stopped in for a bit of lunch and the tab would have been $14.00 but with the promotion:  $9.00...That's quite a deal.  It's the economy and we've a lot of competition here with many restaurants.

Johnny....You mention the crash in Wash. D C......For some reason I still have that young fellow's name in my mind that dove in to save that young women....She was struggling trying to hold on and was about to go under and this fellow dove in after her......and really did managed to bring her to shore...Unbelievable.  Name:  Lenny Skutnik.....!  He was from Pennsylvania.

Quentin, I haven't heard about Shoney's going bankrupt. The ones around here are going great guns like always. For some reason, they closed the one on this side of town a number of years ago, but the ones on the west side are booming. Raining here and 53. ta

Good morning & afternoon to all. When I got up this morning, we had enough snow for a shovel; it's snowthrower deep and still coming now.

As toWhite Castles and other "sliders," I was introduced to Krystals when I was visiting an Uncle in Chattanooga in 1951 (10 cents each then)--good! The combination of a thin beef patty and minced onion in the bun is delicious. When I went down to Chattanooga from time to time when I was in college, I ate at many different Krystals (remember, you go to a Krystal to eat Krystals).  There were many Krystals in Birmingham in the fifties and sixties and even one in Tuscaloosa in the sixties and early seventies. I also found Krystals in Atlanta. Ricki was introduced to Krystals in Washington in the fifties (I don't think there is a Krystal in Washington now). Last year, as I was planning our trip to the South, I discovered that there is one in Greenwood, Miss. Guess what we had for lunch after arriving from Chicago on the City of New Orleans and for supper before we went back to Chicago. The first two guesses don't count. And-I have discovered that there is a Krystal close to the hotel where we will be staying in Bristol, Va., when we go back for another college reunion this spring. They do cost a little more than 10 cents now.

We can buy White Castles in grocery stores here, but the White Castle restaurants here do not sell White Castles. Arctic Circle does have small hamburgers (bigger than Whites Castles or Krystals) that are good.

Went out for a bit of train watching today.  Saw "de plane!" train from Wichita heading west.  Had 4 plane bodies and luggage.  Usually you will see 1-2 but 4 of them today.  Counted the windows on one side (about 40) but that is all I can tell you about them.  Oh, and the Boeing sign at the tippy top of the plane/car - couldn't tell to which one it was attached.

I think the only really "good" burger we have here in Lincoln is the Culver cheeze burger.  I imagine it is a heart attack on a bun, but it really is very good.  Fries are really bad at all the restaurants.  And can't eat any that come with onions already on them - even tho' I miss them like crazy.  But it is the one food that I am truly allergic to and rather than suffer the consequences, I just don't eat them.  In any form.  We do have White Castle at the store, but have never tried them - probably won't, now.  And I think the Shoney's in KCMO or somewhere down there where we ate, did close down.  Too bad, because it was good.

Nice and sloppy outside and about 40'.  If you get any sun at all - notice how really warm it is getting.  With no wind, it would be very nice sitting in the sun and soaking up some rays, which I did.  And it was!

Mookie, if you decide to buy a six-pack of White Castles at the grocery, definitely get the cheeseburgers.  They're much better than the White Castle burgers.  I pick up a package every once in awhile at the grocery, and bring home and put in the fridge.  Make a good little snack, when you don't want anything else.

Posting our Saturday Night Pizza menu a little bit early.  On the warmer bar tonight:

1.  Anchovie;  2. Cheese w/extra cheese;  3. Canadian bacon;  4. Goetta;  5. Hawaiian;  6.  Pepperoni/mushroom/sausage; 7.  Supreme; 8.  Pepperoni calzones

Dessert tonight is homemade, fresh from the oven sugar cookies shaped like hearts, w/red/white icing with little candy hearts in the center of each cookie.

I've never had the pleasure at eating at a White Castle before, but I am now into my 3rd year working for the Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburger chain. One of our best sandwiches for which we have a lot of demand is the "Baconator", and it consists of two hamburger patties, two slices of cheese and three strips of bacon, and man!, is it ever good. It would go very well with a cup of our chili, which I know Mookie likes very well. I made three kettles of chili yesterday afternoon. Today it was kind of slow at Wendy's on Minnesota Avenue and we did not serve a lot of chili that I am aware of.

I know I've said it before, but you don't buy White Castle "sliders"--you just rent them for a few hours!

SJ, I respectfully disagree with you on In-and-Out: my son-in-law took us to one of those to give us "the experience", and I was somewhat underwhelmed.

Don't think we ever have had Shoney's around here. Culver's moved into the area several years ago, and are doing well. They're a Wisconsin outfit--daughter Linda told us about them when she was going to school in Appleton. Best broiled burgers in our area come from Portillo's. Steak 'N' Shake is all right; we go there for their placemats as much as their burgers. In western Michigan, we have a bit of lifelong loyalty to Russ', which was only in Holland during my childhood but has since spread around the entire region. I still like Wendy's burgers.

Did you get a lot of that snow that seemed to have stuck close to our main line (I heard about Omaha and North Platte)? We got about an inch or so by this morning; it's all gone now.

I am a big cheddar cheese fan, so that's the biggest reason I like Culvers.  Wendy's would come in 2nd, but (correct me if I am wrong, Ray), but do they use American cheese at Wendy's?  I can't gag down American cheese.  Just too glooey - is that a proper word?

The Inn and Out burger was very fresh.  Menu not too elaborate, but the burgers were very good.

Another favorite is Luby's Cafeteria - we ate at the one in Victoria Tx a few times.  'Course this was back in the 60's-70's when you could practically walk out the back door in both Texas and Calif and pick your lunch off a tree.

BC - got 4 inches, but very wet, so will melt fast if sun comes out.  Looks like anywhere up to 10" between Norfolk and Ray somewhere.

Good late afternoon everyone. Thanks for the pepperoni calzone! Dinner

By the way, I'm a big fan of In-N-Out Burger. Their simple menu is the reason why they can concentrate on making the excellent "Double Double" cheeseburger--still the best hamburger I've eaten from a true fast-food place. Thumbs Up

I consider the Culver's Wisconsin Swiss Melt my favorite burger, and their fries are top-notch as well.  We enjoy popping into Steak'n'Shake on occasion, but I'm not that big a fan of their dainty little fries.

We ended up with somewhere around 3 or 4 inches here, alot of which melted today.  We'll probably get rid of the rest of it tomorrow if the sun shines.

From my point of view, the only bad thing about working for a fast-food operation like Wendy's is that we throw away tons of food on a daily basis and it's really appalling. For example, we bake potatoes in a convection oven, when they come out of the oven they get time marked......we can only hold on to them for a maximum of 2 hours, and then they get thrown away. I reported for work last Saturday and I found a whole package of hamburger buns (12 buns) in the garbage. Earlier this past week I found a Baconator sandwich in the garbage, a customer must have decided he or she didn't want it. I quickly stuffed it into my backpack and took it home with me. Normally they do not let us take stuff like this home with us . And we can hold on to french fries only so long before they get stale and must be tossed out. At least we try not to waste any meat as it is being fried on the grill, if it becomes to dark or overdone, it is considered "chili meat" and it goes into a batch of chili. I made 3 kettles of chili yesterday afternoon.

Evening all! Hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day (Or Singles Awareness Day if that applies to you).

It was a BEAUTIFUL day here! I took a trip up to South Pass City with a friend of mine who was recently elected to the State House of Representatives as he had gotten an invitation by the Person in charge of the South Pass Historic Site to take a tour of the Carissa Gold Mine which is currently under restoration to become a historical site. Although it is not finished It was amazing to see how the gold was mined and refined back then. The Mine opened in the 1880's and ran until it shut down in 1949. It ran again as a valiant effort again in the 50's but was abandoned again due to the poor quality of the ore. They flipped the off switch and never went back and is literally how it was left on that day. I have some great photos and will post them if everyone wants me to.

Have a great night all!
