Larry, you look to be in good shape for an "antique"; you might have fetched a good price fir your station!

It's stayed above zero so far tonight; there are still a couple of hours before sunup, though. We're also having a band of snow go to the south of us--might come and see us a little later. Just got an update: creeping closer, now one above.

The Lake Effect can be dramatic here, too. I know that western Michigan and northwestern Indiana were getting some yesterday. We had completely clear skies, but the Chicago skyline was standing against a backdrop of clouds all day--very spectacular in the early morning!

Good Sunday morning to all.  We're at 17, 18 degrees, supposed to get back up to low 30s for a high today.  We already have a winter storm watch in effect until Wednesday night.  Freezing rain, snow and sleet to start Monday night.  Could see 2 to 4 inches of snow Tuesday, with another 1, 2 inches Wednesday.  (yuck and double yuck)

Joe, that oatmeal sounds real good this morning.  Would anyone like some cinnamon toast to go along with the oatmeal?  And for anyone not wanting or liking oatmeal, I am adding some grits and cream of wheat to the morning menu, along with some turkey bacon.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and keep safe.

Beautiful red skies over where the sun is about to rise above the horzion.   11 plus degrees here now.  Possible snow flurries sometime today, but not now and maybe not later....One can't be sure of the flurries forecasts.

Thanks for serving breakfast this morning, CW. I would be fixing myself some oatmeal in my own kitchen this morning, but the little bit of milk that I have on hand has been in my fridge a bit too long and probably should be dumped down the sink. Dead

Right now in Sioux Falls we have a temp of about 3 degrees above 0 and I don't think it will get much warmer than that this afternoon. It kind of looks like I will be walking home from work this afternoon, and I will make sure that I am dressed in several layers for my one mile walk!

Still no new snow here - but looks like it snowed all night and is still snowing to the south  of me.   I'll find out later today when I go back in to the TV station for another night of antiques.

Temp bottomed out aroun -16F overnight and is now already back up to +11F.

Still, that oatmeal sounds like a good, hot, stick-to-your-ribs breakfast.

Then I gotta go out and feed the birds.   They can go through as much as two gallon containers a day, which will again make short work of the 50 lbs of black oil sunflower seed I picked up last night.  But they're fun to watch.  Had two papa cardinals at the feeders a little while ago.

Tree:  Any art deco or good glassware at the auction?  I am kinda partial to Mary Gregory and some Vaseline glass.  Especially if it is cased.  Kind of like a dress with a slip under it.  Looks more finished.

Anyway, sounds like a good place to be on a cold nite!

Saw a Vaseline bowl go up for sale last night.  Don't remember what it went for - I rarely track stuff unless I have a particular interest in it.   Bids were down last night - much to the chagrin of the folks from the station.   This is a fundraiser for them.

"Mary Gregory" doesn't ring a bell - don't think I've encountered it.  There was some nice lead crystal and other cut glass.

The items they have range from rustic to refined.  One item I was somewhat interested in was a "farm level" - MC would have appreciated it.  It wasn't a sophisticated surveying tool, but probably closely resembled the instruments that were used to survey early railroads, which is why I was interested.  Went a little higher than I wanted to go, and to a friend at the station.

Greetings from Dupont Center, FL, where it is about 70 degrees right now....

//Ducks to avoid flying things from other occupants of the diner//

On my way to Orlando, they are a touch thirsty down there at the moment, will fix that tomorrow morning.  From there, who knows, but am trying to get home for the Super Bowl next weekend.

Carl, I have a few choice words for your Governor, but you guys can just drop him off an overpass into the path of a speeding truck, save all the taxpayers a lot of money.  Heard he is supposed to be on Larry King Live Monday night, should be interesting, if not comical, to watch.  The last news conference I watched, I couldn't understand anything that was said.

Into the bunk, 3am comes awful early.....

Randy, glad to see you in.  Next time you head for Florida, maybe you could drop by and pick a couple of people wanting to go where it's warmer!Smile,Wink, & Grin

Sunday Dinner is now on the warmer bar.  I've been in the kitchen all morning, and afternoon, fixing dinner/supper.  Here's the menu:  Roast, potatoes, carrots, green beans, beef gravy, corn, hot cornbread fresh out of the oven (sweet and unsweetened), plenty of butter to go on the cornbread.

And, for dessert, we have:  chocolate cake w/white icing, yellow cake w/chocolate icing, cherry pie, apple pie, peach pie, and ice cream for pie ala mode.

Joe, got containers in the fridge, for you to take for work tonight.   Everyone take care, stay warm, and have a great evening.

We've been having off and on snow flurries, and they're beginning to stick.  at 4:51, we have 22 degrees here in Louisville.

Good afternoon, all. It's about 34 outside now--not much different from the 32 when I went to church this morning, but lower than the 40 or so when I came home. We had a misting rain going in, and, comming a back, a heavier rain which added snow when I was almost home. The people going to work tomorrow are promised a messy drive.

Yes, Paula, add grits to the breakfast. Grits is better than oatmeal, which is IMHO infinitely superior to Cream of Wheat. I have enjoyed a locally produced cereal that seems to be really whole-grain cream of wheat. Grits, of course, is not well-known all over the country. One of my college friends was from southwest Virginia, and he told me that when he first ate grits, he thought that you should put milk and sugar on the grits. He just did not know about butter or red-eye gravy. Do you have honey to go with the cornbread?

SJ, my dad probably would have known what you were talking about, and may even have had some in his store at one time.

Randy, I, too, suspect that the television people will have Governor for lunch. He just doesn't get it.

Today was a bit of a momentous anniversary for me. It was 45 years ago today that I received my first ride on a freight train outside yard limits, courtesy of a kind and generous Grand Trunk Western crew that took me from Grand Haven to Grand Rapids, 31.3 miles. January 25, 1964, was the day that a nice January thaw ended, and it was cold and windy. But not in the caboose, where an oil stove was keeping things toasty. I was in the cupola, enjoying the view ahead and to the side, seeing the roads from which I usually was looking at the tracks. I discovered two things on that trip: a place in Grand Rapids known as Fuller, which seemed like heaven to me: switchers from GTW, C&O, and PRR were all working in the vicinity when we arrived; and the station in Grand Rapids, which was a fairly modern structure that had taken the place of the old building off on a wye close to the downtown. At that station I was given a souvenir for this first trip: a November 1962 Official Guide.

At work today, I got confirmation of a week-old rumor: our third weekly perishable train was on the road. ZWASK6 will depart Wallula, Washington, on Saturday nights, and probably be here by Tuesday sometime.

Really?  So now if I actually get out there and do some railfanning again someday, I have better odds of catching one of these?

 Good eveining all!

Finally Southwest Wyoming is feeling normal January Weather.... After almost 3 straight days of rain, It finally turned cold and dumped 2-3 inches of snow on us and temps are dropping towards 0.

I have been so busy lately, School is getting going full bore, and apparently, the Math and Chemistry teachers seem to think their classes are all we are taking this semester. I just completed 6 hours of homework. So apparently we don't have lives on the weekends either.... The last 2 Saturdays I spent with my Snowshoeing class in the Wind River Mountains. Last weekend, 1-18 was BEAUTIFUL! A clear sunny day, with temps up to 40. We were snowshoeing with no coats and just t-shirts on. We did 5 miles starting at 8500 feet up to 9200 feet and then back down. Yesterday was colder, we only did about 2 miles but took the time to build a snow hut and practice some survival techniques. I took some decent ohotos, Hope you don't mind if I post a couple.

Fremont Lake, Above Pinedale About 1200 feet below the trail.

Mulligan Park,  A small clearing with a meadow and a small stream nestled in the trees off the trail.

Good Monday morning, everyone.  We're at 20 degrees this morning, with a 'dusting' of snow.  Funny (weird, since the ground is totally covered).  Supposed to get up to 32 F today, then the snow comes in full force, around 10, 11 tonight.  Have some school closings and two hour delays, except for here in Jefferson County.  They are open, and on time.

Coffee, juices (oj, oj/tangerine, pineapple, apple, grape), hot chocolate, hot water for tea are ready.

On the warmer bar this morning:  turkey bacon, sausage links & patties, scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, oatmeal, grits, toast, bagels and bear claws.

Well, we'll  probably have to put out some rock salt this afternoon, on the front section of our sidewalk.  When I put it out the other day, that one section was totally clear and dry, so I just left that section alone.

Roy, you will receive your meal requests tomorrow (Tuesday), especially since it will be your birthday!

Everyone have a good morning, stay warm, and safe and take care.

10 degrees and light snow in Denver. The bottom finally fell out on the thermometer yesterday and we joined the rest of the icebox nation. Hope our survey crews stay in, kinda hard to find spray painted utility markings on the ground about now.

........16.2 degrees here this morning as we start the new week....We understand there is a massive snow / ice storm on it's way from way out in the central / south plains.

It's tracking as of last evening was sweeping east...perhaps a bit south of Jen in Lincoln and on towards us....and the brunt of it to be in the southern half of Indiana as it passes.  So far, they are saying it will arrive tonight and we might see about 1" of the stuff here as we're about 60 miles north of Indy.  Then on across southern Ohio, and across West Va. and just along the south border of Pennsylvania and on up across New England.

But on it's way that seems like it will come rather close across the Louisville area....So I suppose lots of people will be effected by this.

We have about 9 degrees above 0 here in Sioux Falls, which is typical of our South Dakota winters. We will be lucky if we see 12 to 15 degrees as our maximum high this afternoon, and I was looking at the web site of the Weather Underground and the information I got is that this area has a 70% chance of getting some snow. As to how much we will get remains to be seen.

I am a bit stiff and sore this morning, having taken a bad fall while walking home from work yesterday afternoon. I slipped and fell on a patch of ice on a corner 4 blocks from here and landed on my left hip. I went down like a ton of bricks but thankfully I wasn't hurt beyond some minor bruising.

Good morning everybody, It's Monday. That out of the way, it's 37 and cloudy in Carolina this morning. The clouds will break early and it is supposed to top out around 51. Overall, not a bad day. CW, thanks for breakfast. MC, you'd best stay indoors along with the crews. Everybody keep warm and safe

Must be nice, all you folks living in such tropical climes.

The airport here reported -21F early this morning.

The lake effect machine looks to be firing up again and is supposed to swing north a little later.  Watertown got over a foot Saturday evening/Sunday morning, and they were warning of accumulations of 1-2" per hour in areas south of us late yesterday.   Some people are having trouble finding places to put it all.

Ray - be careful.  Us not-so-young'ns don't heal as fast as we used to.   And we seem to break easier, too.

Tea and bearclaw.   I'll be over in the corner.

Looks like the weather reports are really varied from everyoneRay, take care of yourself! Like Tom said, you are too far from us, for any of us to take care of you.

Just came from the Trackside thread.  All the pictures are great, and I had a very hard time deciding who to vote for.  Finally went with Kathi's.

Menu for the rest of the day:  1.  beef stew w/cornbread; 2.  all three levels of chili:  mild, medium and hot; 3.  leftover roast, taters & carrots from yesterday.

Guess I'd better get back to the washing.  Have plenty of it today.  You all take care, and have a good afternoon.
