Joe, I envy you all of those trains going through town.  In our post-work time in beautiful downtown Lombard (supper and a store) we had only four trains:  a pair of scoots and a couple of short stacks.

Temperature was up today, but so was the wind--gave us more switch problems than we had during the deep freeze.

Chris, I was remiss in not complimenting you on the shot of Aurora.  Nice sky!  I think the city got covered with a glacier at one point since you were there, though.

Running a little bit behind schedule, but:  the pizzas are now on the warmer bar.  Tonight's lineup:

1.  Canadian bacon; 2.  Chicago style;  3.  Goetta;  4.  Hawaiian;  5.  Pepperoni/mushroom;  6.  Anchovie;  7.  supreme; 8.  Italian sausage calzones

Things are warming up here in the Louisville area.  Our high today was 37, 38 degrees.  Only supposed to get down to the low to mid 20s tonight.  Everyone take care, and have a good evening.

Hey, Grampaw, you back on your feet now or do you still have that foot elevated? Ah you just have to love this cool spell. Every time I catch myself complaining about it I think about that old hot, humid May, June, July, August, and September that will be here before I'm ready for it. But, at least I hope to be working a full 40 hour week during the warm months as opposed to the 32 I'm getting now, assuming the landscape company I work for is able to weather (no pun intended) the current economic storm. Having faith does help!

Y'all don't eat too much and don't forget to pick up a few candles when you get your batteries- buy a lot, it's good for the economy!

It's supposed to snow here Sunday night, according to the weatherguessers, but just a dusting. The last time they called for a dusting, we had 22", so I guess it's time to hit the stores for food and batteries......

Tom, your mention of the dead possum reminds me of the mother possum carrying her young that I saw at the Southern station in Charlottesville, in June of 1959, while I was waiting for the Peach Queen to come in so I could go down to Charlotte. She walked across the property as though it were the place for her to be. I trust the dead possum was picked up soon after it was seen.

That band in the image I posted earlier dropped upwards of a foot of snow in Watertown.  Had I waited for an hour to head for town I would have avoided it.  What a mess.  Stopped at the home supply big box and had to park right in front of the store - the lot had a foot of snow in it.  All this time the sun was still shining at my house.

The band drifted north and left 2-4" in my driveway, but it's over for now.

checked on the internet for weather in your part of the country, and found that it supposedly was a low of 23, currently 27, and an expected high of 38 where I grew up. I was amazed to find a report from a small town (698 in 1950, and not much more now). And the same site showed 27, 34, and 38 for Florence and 26, 28, and 35 for Charlotte. Can you really trust such a site?

Well, it is 34 here with 38 projected. Not sure what the 27 refers to, tho. If I was you, I'd get the weather channel desktop weather and then you just enter the location or zip code and get the official data. Florence has turned into a town that has outgrown its roots. A whole bunch of expatriates have moved in and clogged roads, changed values and  made movement difficult. I remember things from 1950 that were in cornfields or woods, and now are shopping centers or housing developements. Just too crowded for a country boy. Florence has double it's size in the past few years. I once worked for the city and saw a dead possum in the streat in front of the City-County Complex. Any town with a dead possum in front of city hall is still a country crossroads.....

BTW, the weather boffins say we may get a touch of snow Sunday night.

For a change, it's cold in Carolina. An hour before sunrise, officially, it's 17 and clear, with a projected high of 38 today. I sat up with the wireless, which it turns out was a waste of time, so will hit the rack shortly. First, I will open the place.

For breakfast, you have a choice of buttermilk pancakes, blueberry waffles, sausage pig-in-a-blankets, or ham sandwiches, along with bacon, link sausage, scrambled eggs or oatmeal. Beverages include soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee or your choice of tea. Sorry for the lack of diversity

Enjoy, stay warm and safe and have a great weekend.

Tom, thanks for the breakfast. No grits, though?

I was out a couple of hours ago, and the Wasatch Mountains were not anywhere nearly as distinct as they were two days ago. We may have some snow next week, and the prognostication (I am not sure how much gnosis there really is in that) is that we will have a good snow a week from tomorrow.

Woo-hoo- both of my digital readouts here at home say 18.5 degrees and rising- a heat wave indeed!

Very nice shot, Chris.  One of these days I'm going to find time to get the Rebel out and take a few pictures.

....We are getting warm...!  Heat wave.  12.6 degrees now, and that's the warmest for several days.  Suppose it is to be up in temp for us now.  Believe in the mid 20's today.  40% chance of a little snow....maybe an inch from what they were saying last evening....Cloudy skies now.

Everyone have a good weekend.

Question for you, Larry:  it looked like, from the map on The Weather Channel, Lake Erie is about to completely freeze over.  Being the smallest of the Great Lakes, that's not too surprising.  Would that affect your snowfall?  Or are you more under Lake Ontario's effect?

We're chiefly under the effect of Lake Ontario:

That's the current radar image at 8AM on Saturday.  I live just above the "E" in "Watertown".  I have blue skies over the house - Watertown and south are probably getting an inch of snow an hour or more. There is a travel advisory in place.

Given the proper wind direction (WSW) it's possible that we could get additional enhancement from Lake Erie, but it doesn't happen very often and Lake Erie would probably have to be open.  We have seen enhancement from Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) carry into our area with a strong weather system.

While Lake Erie freezes completely over almost every year, Lake Ontario has done so only twice in recorded history (the native Americans didn't keep that kind of records...), so lake effect can occur even late in the season.

Yesterday (Friday) evening the winds lined up nicely right along the lake, bringing snowfall amounts of 2" and even 3" an hour into the area between Oswego and Central Square.   Again, I had clear skies.

Good morning, everyone.  Tom, thank you so much for coming in early, and fixing breakfast and everything!  You did a great job, Tom!!Thumbs UpBow

We have 14 degrees this morning.  It's already dropped a degree or two, from when I awoke at 5:50.  By 5 p.m., we're supposed to have a temp between 37 and 39 degrees.  That will be a heat wave, won't it?

Everyone have a good day, and hopefully we'll all have sunshine, with little or no wind, to help raise the temps for all of us.

Oh, Chris...

I don't feel so bad now about not getting together; it sounds like your schedule was as clogged as mine.  On January 3 I was back at work.

I guess this will be the place to put the pictures, ask the questions, etc.  I suppose one overweight thread (hopefully not from all the food!) is easier to reincarnate than two or three.  However, if the Lounge is brought back, as Larry suggests, I am so there!

Question for you, Larry:  it looked like, from the map on The Weather Channel, Lake Erie is about to completely freeze over.  Being the smallest of the Great Lakes, that's not too surprising.  Would that affect your snowfall?  Or are you more under Lake Ontario's effect?

We sank back down below zero before dark tonight.  Tomorrow morning, dark and early, we expect to wake up to temperatures back above zero--and snow falling.

Good evening, all.  Got another round of fish, sides and desserts out on the warmer bar.  And, if none of that interests you, in the Crock Pot on the counter, you'll find sliced hot  dogs in barbecue sauce.  It's really good, too!!  The sauce is midly spicy, and is delicious.  Not too spicy hot, so it won't disagree with anyone who can't take spicy food.

Chris, you know you are always welcome to post your pictures here anytime!  And that's a very good picture you posted.  Always enjoy seeing your pictures.

I'm not sure what our current temp is:  I'm not bothering to look at the thermometer.  I'm comfortably warm, and don't want to freeze myself, by looking at the thermometer.  I'll just wait until the late news comes on!

Have a good evening, everyone, stay warm, and take care.

We have two whole ears of corn out back, still there after a month. (might have something to do with those three black furballs with teeth protecting the birdfeeders)

I don't put corn out, but do keep sunflower seeds available.  Got home from work a little early today and since it was light, scooped up some seed from the can on the back porch and headed for the feeders, accompanied by the Dal.  He got rather excited and kept looking up in the bushes.  I figured we'd surprised one of the squirrels that I see from time to time, but it wasn't. It was a cat, as high in the bushes as the branches would allow.

Filled the feeders and kept the Dal inside for a while.  Cat's gone.  Probably thought it had discovered a nice smorgasbord.  We'll see if it comes back....

Chris - We don't mind your pictures one bit.  The Lounge only got closed because the big threads slow the forums down.  You'd be a perfect candidate to launch Lounge II.

Afternoon All,

It looks like the Trackside Lounge has faded into history and that was where I usually posted my shots that didn't really warrant their own threads. So, I hope you guys don't mind if I pop in here and post a picture every now and again.

For today's installment, here's a shot of Metra's Hill Yard as seen from the High Street Bridge in my hometown of Aurora, IL.

My schedule really clogged up on this trip, so I didn't get out taking pictures except for one morning -- January 3rd.

We're supposed to have a nice weekend with temps around 60ºF (sorry...if I could figure out how to share it, I'd send some back east!), so I'm hoping to get out and get some shots sometime this weekend. I have yet to shoot the Moffat Line since I've been back, so that may be where I find myself.

Hope you're all staying warm!

You've seen that insurance commercial?

At the moment Larry, can't seem to recall the commerical......

The one where the two squirrels run out and make a car swerve and then high 5 each other for such a good job....

We always buy two bags of peanuts when we grocery shop (which was today) and the checkers still have never figured out that along with the corn cobs and bird seed, why so many peanuts.  (unsalted, too!)  We never buy beer or spirits, so they must figure we just have shells all over the living room floor!

Driver sez we have a rabbit that eats the corn when he can get near it and always eats some of the bird seed and peanuts.  How could a rabbit eat peanuts with no way to hold them and crack them.  Maybe just eat the whole thing?  Ugh....Guess he wouldn't have to take fiber.....

CW, I was late for your lunch (I already had cold roast beef sandwiches), but I will take some for supper, if any is left over.

About noon, the temperature at the Salt Lake City Airport was in the high thirties--and the temperature in Provo, SOUTH of here, was 18. The inversion (warm air sitting on top of cold air and blocking heat from the sun) hit there first. Two days ago, we could see the Wasatch Mountains quite clearly; today, there is much haze between us. For the next week, we expect lows in the twenties and highs in the low forties. When the next storm comes in, it should clear all the gunk out.

Moline airport set record for coldest EVER. Minus 29. I see it was minus 36 at Rochelle. I wonder if there were any railfans out this morning? The plane landing safely in the Hudson river made for a great news story.

At 12:30, our official temp at the airport is 11 degrees.  Our indoor/outdoor thermometer shows 14. something (can't remember exactly).  Sun is shining, but not providing much warmth, of course, and can't see the leaves (needles) moving on the pine tree out front.

Our Friday Fish Fry is on the warmer bar:   Fish includes cod, perch, scallops, crab cakes, rolled oysters, jumbo butterfly shrimp;

Side dishes include fries, cole slaw, hush puppies, fried mushrooms, mac & cheese, baked beans.

Desserts include:  chocolate cake, apple, cherry, peach and strawberry cobblers and chocolate and pecan pies.

Everyone have a good afternoon, keep warm and take care.

.....Those squirrels can do anything that involves movement....Saw one come down the side of a smooth wood fence head first, a short time ago and never slipped a step.  Why they risk life and limb running across a thin wire to get across the street is a mystery to me.  One movement they do that I question though, is in running across the street....They often seem to wait to the automobile gets close and then make their charge....not always successful.  Maybe that's the real reason to cross on  the thin wire.

Not going to mention the about 1 inch of snow that arrived overnite and wasn't even announced!

But - did look out upstairs window this morning to see a half eaten corn cob moving slowly across the overhead lines.  Cob was about as long as its carrier.

I will let you ponder that one as I am sure the neighbors are, since we put out a cob-a-day.  And we pick up very few empty ones.
