Thanks for the update. I've always wondered what happened to the SW-1 #1. I was a friend of Fran Weiner's, and was at the ceremony where the engine was named for him after his death.[8D]

I'm not familiar with the locomotive numbers but Does WC still have the FP45 cowl unit? If not, who has it now?

I thought this was now a part of Canadian National? So isn't this really a CN roster of former WC equipment?

Yes, the Ann, and Ops, units are going to be sold. When, who knows. Also, yes this is a roster of former WC units on the CN now. The WC 6652 was the FP45.

I could buy it. If I started a collection taking now (any body willing to contribute by the way?), I could probably buy it in 30 or 40 years.[(-D][(-D]

WCfan4ever,[:D]

Thanks for the tip on the FP45. [8D] I find it interesting that CN would purchase it as, assuming it still has the 20 cylinder 645 diesel, it would be a big "fuel hog" compared to the modern units. Plus engineers in the past disliked the lack of rearward visibility. It would be interesting if the sheetmetal were to be reworked in a "Draper Taper" style.[:p]

I do hope that when retired, that it will be donated or sold to a mueum or society that will restore her Santa Fe colors again. Perhaps even run her in excursion service! FP45s were tiny in number but yet made a name for themselves on the Santa Fe. [swg][tup]

Ed has bought a few 45's. The ones that went to Rail World Inc are his. They were sent to Mexico for rebuilding but no one has seen them since. They were supposed to go the the Montreal Maine & Atlantic but I guess plans changed.

Add the following units to the list:

Leased to NS: 6605, 6611, 6619, 6625, 7504, 7507, 7531, 7532, 7637

Stored: 1558, 1563, 1565, 3002, 3003, 3012, 3022, 3024, 3026, 3027, 6516, 6529, 6556, 6586, 6591, 6598, 6601, 6615, 7515.

The remaining GP40's will all be stored. Sad to see the WC 3026 and 3027 in storage.

Add WC 1501, 1503, 1505, 1506, 1507, and 1508 to the retired list. They were retired May 20, 2004! An end of the GP9 era for Wisconsin Central.

The 4133 is still hanging out in fond du lac, its missing almost all of the airbrake equipment so it can't be moved on the RR. CN wants someone to scrap it on site if possible.
. 4159 is long gone.
The sdf45 and the sdfp45s are long gone.
And if you can afford to buy a used car you can afford a sd-45, they are selling for under $10,000 some as low as $6,000

Really! This makes much more sense. When I need a car I'll just have my parents buy me a SD45 instead! After all, it only takes 3 more hours to go to the capitol by train then by car!

I must have been mistaken, I knew it was one of the two. I'd go scrap the locomotive if I had a cutting torch and insurance. The F45's and FP45 are all sold, you are right, but they have all found homes, well and least the ones that went to Rail World Inc.

Rail worlds # is(773)714-8669 . Tom Tancula put together the deal to parts out the units. the MMA Bought a fleet of 2nd hand GEs instead of using the SD45s. in fact they made a good deal of money to part out the engines, too good of a deal to pass up I guess. MMAs GE fleet is doing well this summer so far,

Thanks for the WC roster, though there are a few units sitting in the disposition tracks,on the far west side of the FDL shops,in the wooded area.Unit 1701,ex CNW GP7,is still there, parted out ,riding on freight car trucks, along with a complete remote control train, with an ex SOO caboose as the R/C unit.WC units1502,1507,&1508 are dead and in the same area as the 1701.WC unit 1503 has been seen presently running scrap gondolas to Sadoff Iron and metal here in FDL.The OP unit was seen on a Southbound NS train this past Monday.I'm glad i got my picture of that unit.I will post it very soon, for everybody to see. Also,NS unit #9842 is here in FDL doing switching duties, with sister unit #2527,and 9842 is in tan primer paint!!!! I have seen a few ex GT auto parts boxcars in the Sadoff scrap tracks.Dont know what for,but it is a bit interesting to see these in a scrap yard.

It has crossed my mind. Being that they are sub-lettered WC, I suppose I have no choice but to include them. Its hard though to find out when they are renumbered so I'm thinking about just putting them in order with thier future numbers and as I find out when they were renumbered, I will put that on there as well.

The GCFX leasers which were former CN's that became GCFX's numbered GCFX 6030 - GCFX 6079 will become WC 6900 - WC 6949. They are not official WC units but they do have WC sub-lettering.

OK, here is what I have for operating Wisconsin Central's no matter where they are.

WC 1502
WC 1552, 1556, 1558, 1560-1565
WC 2001-2006
WC 2500
WC 3000, 3002-3007, 3009-3012, 3014, 3017-3018, 3021-3025
WC 3026-3027
WC 6001
WC 6002-6006
WC 6497, 6503, 6516, 6521, 6529, 6550, 6553, 6555-6556, 6578-6579, 6582-6584, 6586-6588, 6590-6591, 6593-6598, 6601-6602, 6604-6605, 6610-6611, 6614-6616, 6619-6622, 6625, 6629, 7496, 7498-7502, 7504-7515, 7517-7520, 7522-7532, 7551, 7554, 7581, 7585, 7589, 7592, 7606, 7637-7638.

Most of the SD45's are leased to NS and not on CN rails. I heard that one of the WC GP40's, 3023 I think is roaming BNSF. There are also a few roaming UP and other railroads as well. If anything happens to any of the locomotives listed above, please post here.

WC 1556 is not with with CN. It has been gone since all the other SW1500's went. It is currently at Cleveland Works Railway.

Also, there are three F-Units of Algoma Central heritage/WC that are sitting on the Keokuk Railway, part of Pioneer Railcorps operation. I heard a few of them are also heading to Gettysburg Railroad for use on thier tourist trains.

All leases on WC locomotives expire 9-1 so the locomotives should start returning to home rails. Word has it CN is planning for a very busy Grain/Potash season and need all available power.

Just got word that WC 6590 and WC 6602 are sitting at VMV, Paduchah. They are stored unservicable too. Were they sold or did CN put them there as a place to store them. I guess they look to be in real bad condition too.

Dave [8D]

You must have spent some time acquiring all the info you listed. Thanks for doing it. [:)]

I saw a W C unit here in North Little Rock just last Friday. I wasn't close enought to get a number or know which unit it was. I think it was in a NS consist but not 100% sure on that.

Update:

WC 2500 was thought to be put out to pasture. It had major problems, I forgot what it was and was sent to Woodcrest for repairs! CN must like this unit. One of a kind...SD39Q...rebuilt SOU SD35!

WC 6622 was retired last week, I have no idea why as of yet.

WC 7500 suffered a blown turbo on A432 on 11/15/04. That means because this is a WC owned unit, it will most likely be retired.

Lease was extended on the WC units on NS. They were rounded up to be returned only to be re-leased. Locomotives are:
6598, 6601, 6611, 6615, 6619, 6625, 7504, 7507, 7515, 7517, 7519, 7531, 7532, 7551
, 7637.

WC 4151 is being cut up at Woodcrest! This unit was sold to Hilliard Enterprises but now it seems they must not want it or are paying for it to be scrapped on CN property.

The WC 1501, 1503, 1505, 1506, and 1508 are sitting at the FDL deadlines. I was there Friday night...well Saturday morning around 1am to check em out. The 1503 and 1508 are stripped of useable parts from what I can tell and the 1501, 1505, and 1506 look in useable condition. The WC 4133 ex-CNW high hood is there as well.

Hey Dave,

I've been looking around the web a little for a good WC yahoo group. Now I already belong to Wisrail, but is there one yahoo group specific to WC that is good and regularly updated?

Also, that rock train you mentioned on the 22, where is that run out of?

I'm thinking til early next year. I say this because some of these have thier leases expiring next year and will be returned to First Financial...or who ever it is now.

The U700 goes from Sussex to Grayslake 90% of the time and the other 10% goes to Leithton, ILL.

As for teh YahooGroup, here is a link...

As of a week ago, green JTPX1551 and two of its kin in WC paint were at Connersville Indiana in WOHO/IBCX's deadline south of the Indiana HiRail/ Wabash Central shops.

Never dull in Connersville (Critters, Steam, BLW/EMD mongrels, Limas, Alcos and 1st generation 4 & 6 axle EMD's in various states of repair.)

WC 2500 is sitting out of service at Woodcrest. Several sources are reporting that it is going to be parted out and some say it will be repaired sometime. Its a one of a kind former SOU SD35 rebuilt to an SD39Q.

The remaining WC SW1500's have been purchased from thier lessor...1552, 1558-1565. They will not be returned anytime and will be on the former WC tracks for the remainder of thier life's. They are not to be taken anywhere else.

WC 7551 is not on the NS. I saw a photo of it on Cajon Pass on Dec. 31st! Far way from home!

The SD45's, 6578-6599, some in the 7000 series are going to be rounded up for return. Some reports say that CN is looking into buying these units instead. If something is to go wrong with them, they would then be retired but they are in good running condition.

Compliments Of WCInfo YahooGroup
Units On NS:
6579,6593,6594,6601,6611,6615,6625,7496,7504,7507,7511,7515,7517,7524
7531,7532

7551 is on the BNSF.
7637 is on the UP.

About the WC 2500:
WC 2500 - Governor shut down & no power from Auxiliary Generator at
Wausau, WI on 18-Oct-2004; Moved to Fond du Lac, then moved to Woodcrest on
21-Oct-2004. Inspected at Woodcrest & it was found to have Gear Train
damage and a bad ordered Turbo. Turbo & Governor have been changed-out &
Gear Train is being repaired. It should be released from Woodcrest this
week, if all goes according to plan.

The SD45's On Lease:
As for the lease on the twenty-one SD45's that expires at the end of this
year, previous plans were to return the units to the lessor. However, the
SD45's have already generated more revenue through lease to other roads than
the purchase price for the twenty-one leased units. Coupled with the fact
that scrap prices are at all time highs, the current plan is to purchase all
twenty-one of these units from the lessor. The lease covering these SD45's
also includes 246 freight cars which will also be purchased.

SD45 Notes:
WC 6595 was released from Woodcrest on 28-Dec-2004 following a prime mover
change-out. WC 6586 & 6588 are both at Woodcrest for the same & are
awaiting prime movers. WC 6578, which caught fire near Nestle, WI on
17-Oct-2004, is still at Woodcrest as well.

The 1701 that was scrapped was the former Fox River Valley GP9! ex-CNW 4504 I believe. The 1701 SD45 still works for the MRL.

The 1502 was returned to service the following day. Now, it looks like it is done fore good. The WC 1502 was DIT to Woodcrest following some problems with the main generator. Now it appears as if all the former Algoma Central GP7Lm's are done for.

Also, 2 SD45's were moved DIT to Woodcrest...reason, unknown.

Does anyone know how much longer NS will have their batch of WC's on lease? I have noticed that 5 of them have returned to CN, 6605,6619,6621,7551 & 7637?

Currently on NS is:
6601,6611,6615,6625,7504,7507,7515,7517,7518,7531 & 7532

NS has also been leasing out around a dozen MRL SD45's also.

I'm not sure how long they will be on lease yet. There is a good chance that they will spend the rest of thier life on the NS or in the CN Lease fleet until they die. I have noticed most SD45's are on lease including another on on the UP in California:http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=93917

Just read on the internet that the WC 3007 (GP40) is at NRE Dixmoor. I am guessing it is there for repairs of some sort or something else.

Moved to IC Woodcrest:
WC 1552 - popped water and govenor oil buttons...might return in CN paint
WC 6497
WC 6594

WC 3007 was out shopped from NRE Dixmoor with engine change-out

WC 1562 and WC 1563 are headed to NRE Dixmoor for repairs of some sort

WC 1502 was offically retired from the CN roster

There are also many other WC SD45's are Woodcrest in storage. I dont know the numbers of them. One I believe is WC 6578? If someone could find out the numbers, that would be great.

Its my understanding that the WC unit #2500 was sent down to Woodcrest last year, and presumely scrapped. Then I have heard from some people say that this unit was repaired and is now in Stevens Point,or up in the Wasuau,Wi area. If this is so,then how come that unit has NOT passed through here in Fond Du Lac, on the CN main?[banghead] My reason for asking is that I live 50 yards away from the mainline, and so far that unit has not been seen coming through here at all, and I have set up a video camera for 8-10 hours per day so as not to miss any action while at work. The only WC units of "rarity" are the "State of Wisconsin" unit, both Operation Lifesaver units, the usual SD45's,and various CN and IC units. This pass weekend, went up to Appleton, and saw from Highway 41 an ex B&LE unit lettered for the DMIR.Did not get the number, though it was the last unit in a 3 locomotive unit set, pulling a double stack train heading North.

From what I understand from the WCinfo Group is that 2500 is most definately alive and well, and in the Stevens Point area was put there last on 2/12, unless it's left, which I haven't seen. Dave can confirm, but that's what I know.

The WC 2500 is alive and well. It is working in the Stevens Point to Wausau area. It was moved back up there a few weeks ago after repairs.

-Also, I forgot to mention that the WC 1558 is also down at Woodcrest with engine or main generator problems.

Reported on YahooGroups: WCInfo:
SW1500`s 1562, and 1563 have arrived at NRE Dixmoor for repairs. 1562 is in for
a main generator change out, 1563 has a bad order, blown engine. The 1563 has
been in storage almost two years, with its cab windows, and doors open. The cab
interior looks to be in no better condition than a scrap line locomotive.
Hopefully these two will get a badly need repaint in, and out.

WC 3007 should be back in service soon, CSX was delivering it to the IC today.

The Algoma Central GP7Lm's are all stored and retired. All but the 1502 were retired May of 2004 and the WC 1502 was recently retired. There are no plans to dotate them. They will most likely get the torch...[V][:(]

Are any of the SDL39's still operating? I recall seeing them first in the Milwaukee Road orange and black paint before WC repainted them. Neat little locos....

All 9 of the SDL39 should still be running on the Ferrocarril Pacifico SA in Chile. They went down there in 2003 and are now 5'6". There is a picture of 2342 (585) on page 72 of the Dec. 2003 Trains.

These 50 SD40-3 CN locomotives are lettered WC;

This unit has been in my area lately. Caught it on a light engine move with the NS Maersk Sealand unit.

Within the last few weeks, all the GP7Lm's were scrapped at Woodcrest. From what I understand, they were cut down to the cabs and frames and were sold to NRE for possible conversion to Green Goats. Is CN interested in any of these locomotives?

So you are still around! Lets keep this thread alive. Ya, i heard from WCinfo. What a shame. Sucks to see all the WC's disapearing. Im going to hopefully get a better camera ( 5.1 from the 3.2 i have ) for christmas so i can catch a couple units with nice quality. Today they had CN[V]2524 and WC[:)]6555.

HI everyone it seems like when ever I see a WC train rolling though wisconsin it's begin pulled by Wc engines but most times I'll see a CN loco in the mix to and I really had no idea that the Wc was for sale and now that I know that it's a sad day in Railroad history
but anywho if anyone can get an updated list can you pass it onto me thanks[:D][:D]

The frames from the 1501-1508 are at NRE in Mt. Vernon currenttly. I am guessing for the Green Goat conversion package!

Those frames are going to be used for the UP Green Goat program! At least they are being used again! All of them except for the 1504 which was scrapped a while ago.

Since Jan. 2006, CN has retired what appears to be 13 SD45's! Here they are...6521, 6555, 6582, 6583, 6586, 6588, 6590, 6597, 6604, 6614, 7500, 7509, 7589!

Sad to see this happen to such great locomotives! I suppose with CN getting thier new locomotives in, they don't need the WC "JUNK" around anymore! So unfortunate!

spotted WC SD40 #6001 trailing CN Dash8-40CM #2412 here on train #395, should be somewhere in Michigan by now..
derailment? what derailment? All reports of derailments are lies. Their are no derailments within a hundreed miles of here.

Related to all of the above, this occasional visitor trackside of the Wisconsin Central wishes to know the (probable) best times to view trains, now of course, on the Canadian National in the Mukwanago - Honey Creek area.

Any assistance will be welcomed.

Oh, my. Someone else who likes that area. I visit there frequently when I go out. I like the relatively open areas and scenery. Although Honey Creek seems to be a strange little town.

BTW, welcome to the forums.

NRE builds the center cabs otherwise known as the Gen-set switcher. So they'll probably be used for the center cabs.

WC 6598 was retired on the 24th. Derailed in Mellon. Pretty deep in the ground on the engineers side. The 2500 was hit by a milk truck, but only the fuel tank was ruptured.

Sad to see the 6598 retired and then the 2500 as well may be gone if CN has anything to do with it!

I did some more digging and found through a dogpile.com search using the phrase "Wisconsin Central Roster" this site: http://www.ole.net/~rcraig/WC2.HTML.

It says:
"Road No. Qty Model Notes
2051-2061 11 GP35M Were 4001-4013; 2053 gone"

Is that not accurate? Not flaming just trying to validate what I found.

On the roster it says that, but it goes from 4011 to 4013. Skipping 4012.

Yes they did. It was actually renumbered from 4001. When the WC/Oxford units were running, there was an engine in that group numbered 4001, so to avoid confusion they renumbered the 2 WC engines from 4001 and 4003 to 4012-4013.

The original group of WC GP38's(ex-MoPac rebuilt GP35's) were numbered 4001-4011.

I have also heard that the SD40 6001 is in the deadline at Homewood, the SD40-2 6002 has been gone for some time. But 6003-6006 are still running though![8D]

I believe the 6002 was retired due to this accident:

Dave,
Your roster seems to be missing three locomotives.
SW8 900 was former AC 140, shown here-
http://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/dr1078.htm

F9B 6602, 6606 former VIA Rail, same numbers.
Purchased 1995 (never used ?)

Glad to see this thread still going. I have a forum set up for WC news like this, if you would like to join you will be filled in on everything WC.

The 2500 is going to be around for a while. Its up the -3 standards, and we all know how much CN likes the SD40-3 units.

Just to note: WC 6605 is the last 6600 series locomotive working! There are a few in the 7600 series but not the 6600 series!

WC 6001 is currently being scrapped by CN! The only and the last SD40 that WC ever had...CN wants nothing to do with! Sad, Very Sad.

I just saw the 7496 and 6593 go by, they were trailing (dead in tow), so they appear to be heading to the deadline as well. The 6593 had "EFT" and "Do not fuel" spray painted on the fuel tank.

I have just read on the WCInfo YahooGroup that all the WC 2000's are headed out to British Columbia.  From what I understand, 2001 and 2004 are the only two that remain in Wisconsin.  WC 3005 as well has already headed over there along with a few more GP40's to follow.  I guess CN wants loco's with Dynamic Brakes due to the last derailment they had!  Thats your GP40-2LM's for ya...NO DYNAMIC BRAKES!!!!

Sad to see more WC's disappear from the good ole' WC territory.  Now I have to travel to another country to see them!

Four more WC SD45's have been scrapped by Houston ... Something ... Services in Homewood, IL.  I know that there was 6521 and a 66?? locomotive scrapped and when this was reported, they were down to thier frames!  Sad to hear and sad to see.

Current operating Wisconsin Central SD45's:

WC: 6497; 6529; 6605; 7495; 7498; 7501; 7502; 7504; 7506; 7507; 7514; 7515; 7519; 7522; 7524; 7525; 7526; 7527; 7530; 7531; 7532; 7551; 7554; 7637; 7638

All others have been retired and are awaiting SCRAPPING!!!!  The WC 7520, one of the older Anniversary units has now been scrapped at CN's Woodcrest Shops.  The WC 3018 is currently in for repairs after the grade crossing accident it was involved in.  WC 1564 is as well in the shops for mechanical work.  Wouldn't suprise me if she isn't getting rebuilt so they can paint her into "CN 1564"  That would just add another lost Wisconsin Central locomotive to my list!

one more 66 SD45 left. this is horrible

i like to think of it not as being scrapped and virtually destroyed, but rather reduced to nothing more than number boards. since most of the fleet seems to have had their boards stolen

how many are in homewood awaiting the torch now? sounds like 6620 is gone. may he rest in peace Disapprove [V]

i've got to go to chippewa falls more often and catch any remaining units if i can. does anyone know when the CN manifests come through usually on that line? i would appreciate the info so i can get some pictures

A lot of times I don't even like the word "scrapping", but I guess thanks to CN everyone now has to deal with it!  I would rather put up with the BNSF/CSX/NS/UP version of just patching.  CN would rather get the money off of them by scrapping them for the high rate of metal prices right now.

As for the numberboards, I personally have the former WC 4010's and WC 1505's numberboards.  Cost a lot but I can live with that cause there were only 4 made!

As for the Chippewa Falls trains, they change all the time.  I have noticed that they tend to run in the morning after sunrise but prior to 10am.  There usually is at least one WC mixed into the consist!

As for the WC 2001 and WC 2004, they are both back in Wisconsin!  For how long is the question everyone has right now.  They may just be in the area for inspection before returning to British Columbia which is very sad.  I say send some real junk up there with some CN's that do have Dynamic Brakes and not stuff from Wisconsin.

Three WC SD45's LEFT!!!!!!!  WC 7514 is still working in Neenah and jobs around town.  The other two from what I have heard are working Neenah and Stevens Point, WI.  All other retired including 7525/7551/7638.  All stored at Woodcrest, IL in a place unknown due to no photos showing up anywhere.

CATCH THEM WHILE YOU STILL CAN CAUSE THEY WILL BE GONE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT!!!!

As I can't recall IRM having an SD45 in it's collection, perhaps one of the last WC SD45's might be donated to the museum?

Don't look forward to CN "Dontating" anything to anyone.  The way it looks right now is that they want to sell and scrap all SD45's.

As for the remaining ones that are left, I copied this from the WcInfo YahooGroup and it was posted on 1/21/07:

   A41231 CN
   WC 007531 HUMBOLDT MPLS MN 01 21 0839 U Departure
   R91681 CN

7502 arrived Markham the 19th and 7532 arrived Memphis, TN the 18th.

So this leaves us with 7514, 7519, and 7531.

SD45's No Longer!  WC 7514 was headed down to Woodcrest on Q11841-25.  This ends the operation of Wisconsin Central SD45's in the state of Wisconsin.  In that train there was WC 3006, CN 6925 and CN 57??.

At least 7525 is back in service. As for the MRL SD45s, a few weeks ago they just sent at least a dozen SD45s and two of the F45s to Chicago Heights, IL, possible to be scrapped. Also, IC&E's lone SD45 was scrapped at Chicago Heights.

Actually Max, the only one on the rails is the 7525. The ones that were going back in service are still sitting around. I believe they torched the idea of re instating them.

Nope, just being moved DIT. The 7525 is on home rails, but for how long? The auction ends May 10th, and if so im guessing it will be retired for scrap soon after.

Dang 7528 is gone! a.k.a 6528. That was my favortite SD-45. Got a lot of stories behind it. The unit came for BN, hit a gravel truck in Chicago, got a UP nose job, got in WC paint, later it got rebuilt, roamed the rails for a while. The CN came and killed her. Here's the link of her in death row. I hate to see her go.Sad [:(]

The #7528 is the unit that the WC locomotive simulator we have is patterned after.

#6548 was the unit that got the UP nose job(from UP #3639). I've got a
couple of pics post repair and post-repaint of the unit, working here

i know the feeling, man. i lost 6620 about a year ago. he was the only SD45 i remember ever seeing in my railfan days (as opposed to beforehand when i was just a train-watching person). and the worst of it all is it's damn near impossible to get an HO WC Sd45 since nobody currently makes them. i'd have been able to renumber one to 6620 if one was actually out on the market.

There is now quite a long line of WC SD45s and BC Rail GEs sitting at Homewood (Woodcrest) waiting to be sold or scrapped. Two WC GP40s are also with them. One of them was the 3003. I have seen two WCs in service lately on the IC, which is very rare. I saw the Map engine on a local and SD40-2 6006 running solo on a very short stack train. This is the first time I have ever seen two WCs leading separate trains on the former IC, and it was all during Homewood Railroad Days at the new railroad park just south of the yard.
