OK., Bard-ot is back in the Yard-ot after a steamy Easter pm/ Monday am at the good old B&B with my ex. More later on that, after Doggy gets sleepy and starts in on hockey.

Where to start? Pre-War French cinema? Pretty good for PWFC? On request, I will copy and send you some of the essential ones. I'm getting up to speed on Hitchcock's British Years' stuff , as we speak. Well the French and Americans virtually invented film as we know it. It's not their fault that their really tough, pioneering efforts have been surpassed by so many expensive, facile throwaways in Box Office Appeal. My French war-bride mother grew up fatherless through WWII. Her father had served in the armee' in WWI and worked closely with Pathe' on various inventions (that you can still see today at the end of closing credits) and managed movie houses through the Sud and North Afirica that Pathee' owned..See Kevin, I'm trying to stick those accents ague on top of the second e's and would also like to be able to do breves and circonflexes, as well as those sguigglies above Spanish words like manana and umlauts over German vowels. Anyone care to clue me as to how? I'm afraid those little nuances or inflections and meanings are disappearing in this small, dumb and e-literate keyboard. My family's Quebecois friends used to rush up to my French mom with regardez-vous' and fervent queries and she would always throw up her hands and nearly go to Sign language. Brit's will understand all this about Bristol English, "Are you Dutch, sir?" Gen-u-ine Frontier Gibberish, she must have thought!!!
Where was I?
Oh, yeah, my French grandad saw the Second War coming and took off!!! Without adieu, sayonara or see'ya, he got drafted, went off to the armee'. Knew it was not going to be kind for artists and their angels (he knew and promoted Charles Chapln. Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, et al) and just left my dear Grandmere and teenage mom to the vagaries of Vichy, ***, ersatz butter and coffee and sugar, and those German and American (with nylon!!! stockings and hamburgers in a few weeks) guys who kept disturbing the Marseillaise's peace by defensively or offensively wrecking the damned town!!!

Eventually I hope to get back to railroading and Rule G, but bear with me a little bit.

My Grandmere was nearly Mussolini'ed, i.e. dragged through the streets until dead when the Americans pushed north. She had been doing secretarial work fot the Vichy's to keep my mom alive, helped Jews, hapless Slav workers. and everyone else in sight, when she could. Marseilles' mayor kept peace in those terrible times and was dragged by the nascent communists ala Mussolini to his death When a child, Grandmere was a crack shot with a rifle (used to sneak out into the desert with the Arab boys), played killer tennis and remained to the end a scrappy tom-boy. and TV-tennis watcher My kinda gal, n'cest pas guys?
Wow, I'm off there again, but can guide you a bit in great French film both pre- and post WWII. Brigitte Bardot and all that nudity was cool for a while fellas. Kinda made you feel cool bringing your girl down to that Arty movie house where she would say, "Isn't this where they show all those foreign movies with stuff underneath that you have to read?" Hoping the chick wouldn't notice all ihe creeps hanging around for the midnight "what-passed-for-porn-in-those-days" flick, you could say with patient savoir-faire, "No, ma cherie this isTruffaut (or, God help me, Goddard)". That didn't work, and you all know me for being an honest gentleman and would never hide salami in the popcorn bag. I could help you guys through the sub-titles and symbolism, the vacant
and endless ennui over bodies anyone would like to hop on.
.
How come women never get IT? Bui remember everything you ever said, didn't say. or mis-said through (I think), generations? They tuck 'em away in private shrines and run 'em at you when you're most vulnerable. Thank God they're around anyway to curb us Dogs!!!

More later. and CSX put some stuff over the Garrett Bridge overnight!!!
Sleep tight and don't let the Jacuzzi bite.

Dan there are a few French movie worth seeing that I guarentee you will enjoy..

"Amelie" with Audrey (shes-too-cute-to-be-real) Tautoe, this is a WONDERFUL film!

"The Triplets of Belleville" out last year and IMHO the BEST film of 2004, the dream sequences involving TRAINS is itself worth seeing this film for, your brain will be BENT after...

"City of Lost Children" with Ron Perlman, excellent film in story and visuals.

"Delicatesin" imagine Sweeny Todd set in a post-apocalypitic Paris, another film that will cause Bent-Brain syndrome.

Re: .......the only french cinema of note is that showing various armies marching through the arc de surrender....

BTW hows the old joke go?

How many Frenchman does it take to defend Paris?

We dont know, it's never been tried!

Running now to hide from the wine bottles and baguettes being hurled my way...

Vic, you can beat me with the UnMadisonAbridged version of the Bard's greatest hits, you can even strap me to the chair and make me watch Pearl Har-bore while listening to Britiney Spears (oops I did that again) ............we can even continue to flog the KO'd equine over the G string rule (through it seems it would be uncomfortable to wear while driving a train..maybe it's a safety issue) but French Cinema????? Poke my eyes out with a spoon.......the only french cinema of note is that showing various armies marching through the arc de surrender....

Ever feel like someone rolled you up in a couple of real thick blankets, then spent about two hours wailing away on you with a three foot piece of garden hose?

You know, that totally numb feeling?

emphesis on LOVE A LITTLE

You see Rick, in the scheme of live, we are all human.

I didn't plant a cherry bomb under you, don't worry, it's a banana bomb.. brum bum che.

No, bombs are strictly against my "code de vie"

We are all human and we do often err from our ways like lost sheep. the path of being polite, and respective of others is lest followed, and we often tend to err on the path of disrespect.

Rick lets make a deal, I really can't take this bickering much more, it gives me a sore stomach, if we can't at least be nice to each other (which we can), then we ought to ignore each other, let me know what you think, in words that I can understand because being from quebec means slowm or slower.

Rick Gates, your last post truly dismays me. It's Rule AA that has set my demons loose and forced me to confont them. It's been hard work over the last twenty years. I've got a few years on you I know, but I've come to admit...... that I'm crazy!!! That's right folks, you heard it from the horse's *** right here!!! I mean when owning and driving a car conflicted with Jim Beam back in 1979, I moved on to 6-year-old Inver House Scotch without hesitation. Didn't want anyone hurt and have BMW'd ( Bus, Metro, Walk) ever since. My alcoholic mind still wonders why AAA never sent me a plaque for staying away from the steering wheel. Guessing now, but I think my sometimes elusive God and my irritating conscience were at work even then. I realize you had to be driving a train that terrible sad day and can only wish you a brotherly hug.

Now, Kevin you are old enough to scuttle your "floats" all by yourelf.. I see the galley oars flailing right now in my twisted mindscape. "He'p me, He'p me", you are saying while drowning in your private sea of rhetoric. Well when you get to be a grandfather don't bother me no mo' . I'll have been long gone, like a cool breeze or a warm Old Fart. Let's see, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Wynton Kelly on the 88's, Paul Chambers on the stand-up bass, Elvin Jones on the american drums, and me rixflix on..... what....what....the upright pud!!!.

Thanks edblysard and ddperrydispatch for your careful and thoughtful posts. We all got here by various means and your work ( I know it was) is applauded right now by me, rixflix.

Well At least i'm not the only one who sees that.

Railfix- Your Grand you know that? MAn.. .. you made me chuckle all day yesturday! "I'm not 38! i'm 57!" I would have taken 38, because at 38 your still slighly allowed to be a bit immature, but at 57? your old enough to be my grandfather! and look at your behavior!

LOL!

Thats one for the ages!

LOL Rick, your still after doggy aren't you! Some people just never grow up, and you've become prime evidence of that.

If you recall, doggy is leading in points when it comes to maturity.

Rick one last thing, I couldn't help but notice you made a subliminal shot at my spelling a few posts back, No i'm not going to spend 40 minutes or 35 secondes correcting my spelling, If you can't read- I fail to see how thats my problem.

don't make your problems mine, I'm not taking the rap because your illiterate.

If you can't read, Either your school or parents or even Society has failed you, But i sure havn't!

Actually scrathc society, dont want you blaming society for your problems either.

Yeah, yeah I know, but return with me now to those days of yesteryear. I was a quick doubles-hitter who idolized Musial, Clemente, Kaline, and even the slower Berra. If a double was needed late in the game we would just caress the ball out to the end of our bats and dump it between or amidst the confused outfielders. Third base was my favorite position but I was at home anywhere in the infield. Wish I still had that arm and those beautiful first basemen who knew where to stretch and pick my throws. From side-arm or from under the other guys' cleats my tosses would always curlicue sharply at their end. And speaking of that, I must retire now for tomorrow's Easter.

The 8th Edition of NORAC operating rules (NORAC=-Norheast Operating Rules Advisory Committee) which were effective the first of last year 2003, and govern operations on Amtrak, Bay Colony, Canadian Pacific's former D+H, Conrail Shared Assets in NJ + Detroit areas; CSX's former CR lines (tho CSXT is about to implement their own rulebook on those routes very soon, I hear), Genesee & Wyoming, NJTransit, Susquehanna, NS' former CR lines, Providence & Worcester, Reading Blue Mountain & Northern, and SEPTA, plus some associated members (list of 39 roads, including Connecticut Southern, Springfield Terminal, Morristown & Erie).

Rule G reads as follows:

<<G. Drugs and Alcohol
Employees are prohibited from engaging in the following activities while on duty or reporting for duty:
1. Using alcoholic beverages or intoxicants, having them in their possession, or being under their influence.
2. Using or being under the influence of any drug, medication, or other controlled substance - including prescribed medication - that will in any way adversely affect their alertness, coordination, reaction, response or safety. Employees having questions about possible adverse effects of prescribed medication must consult a Company medical officer before reporting for duty.
3. Illegally possessing or selling a drug, narcotic or other controlled substance.

An employee may be required to take a breath test and/or provide a urine sample if the Company reasonably suspects violation of this rule. Refusal to comply with this requirement will be considered a violation of this rule and the employee will be promptly removed from service.
>>
================================================
[Smoking is covered in Rule H.]

For someone like myself, and I consider myself a responsible drinker (I know pretty much when to shut myself off, and I never drink when subject to duty), I consider that the programs of random D+A testing impinge on my personal integrity, in that I accept that I must comply with the Rules if I intend to continue working on the Railroad, including any like Rule G. I accept the legality of random testing nonetheless, especially when validated by court decisions based on the need for the public's safety.

For those unawares, since random testing commenced, the amount of 'positive' results has been somewhere near one-fourth of the amount that management anticipated. Kind of like saying that instead of a one percent occurrence rate, only about 0.25% of employees tested were found in violation, and most railroads have standards that are more strict than the US DOT's regulations (and most states' liquor laws) dictate.

All in all, we're a pretty safe bunch of people, alcohol- and drug-wise ..... we're not users, in spite of some having been in the past. That doesn't mean that we're not still human beings, subject to human foibles and all ..... but, I'll let my brothers in the BLE and UTU speak to those issues of working out in the field vs. being alert and all.
