Oh! Canada
Posted by Mookie on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 12:45 PM
Can't give you all the details, but Canada seems to be following US when it comes to brilliant ideas that have no value.

Heard bits and pieces that a maximum security prison near Edmonton wants the guards to not wear kevlar vests to protect them from stabbings.

Gives the prisoners a complex, low self-esteem, hives or something like that.

And we were upset about no whistles at xings.

Can we all hum a chorus of DUH!

Anyone in Canada want to give us the rest of the story?

OK, DDDDDDDDUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHH! Those poor prisoners need a big hug (oh, did I forget to say the hug should be from either an electric chair or the straps holding them down for the needle...yes I know this sounds very hard nosed, but really...who but the bleeding heart liberals care that much about this scum)..WOW, CAN HARDLY WAIT TO HEAR THE BACKLASH ON THIS NON-TRAINS ISSUE AND MY COMMENTS!

but it is a trains issue - goes to the mind-set that is trying to do away with train whistles at crossings and the ones that think trains are all at fault for people dying.....

This news about prison guards explains the story about the three 12 year old boys who burned down the station in Strathroy ,Ontario. They were released into the custody of their parents and will likely face probation. How is this going to deter them,or other youth from doing something similer in the future. This judge deserves a big DUH!

The really pointed part of that whole story - was this was not a minimum security prison - it was maximum security.

Going home! Gotta find my hammer and hit myself in the head!

Mook, don't do it (the hammer to your head part), you seem like too nice a person to be injured.

I used to wear a kelver helmet to prevent hurting myself when I used a hammer. My wife made me stop wearing it. It was giving my young daughter a complex.

Dan, it's A formality...

You know- Just in case.

Just in case a French man From Quebec City steals a wheel of Stinky cheese, and the owner of the store/house goes on a mudering rampage, and decides to reinact the movie "The Quebec Butter-Knife masacre"

Good movie, if anyone was wondering.

Oh yeah Dan, we got the crime up here eh. [B)]
See, we used to just put the violent offenders on a little chunk of pack ice and let 'em float away. [xx(] If they didn't drown or freeze to death, the polar bears and wolves usually took care of 'em. Great deterrent . [:D]

But with global warming and all, the ice is gettin harder to find and those darn tree hugger types started complainin' about the poor diet the wildlife was gettin eating all of those criminals [:(] (it seems criminals often have higher than normal cholesterol levels, and this was causing an increase in heart disease and Lipitor prescriptions in polar bears, and with our health care system the way it is things just couldn't go on that way).

Soooo, we had to start building jails, and guard towers and so on. We even got some of them SuperMax prisions for the real nasties. [}:)]

Oh the good old days. [sigh]

Well, this reminds me of a story I heard a while ago that has to do with both trains and prisons. In an issue of the Railway Magazine from a few months ago, there was a story about a railway line and yard that was going to be reopened after being closed for something like 20 years. Part of this line happens to go past a prison that houses some of the most dangerous murderers and terrorists in Britain. Officials from the prison were very upset about this because the sound of the trains might disturb the prisoners' sleep. Get real people! Never mind the fact that there's a large wall around the prison which would probably block out a lot of noise anyway. In the article it said that prison officials said that some things that me seem like nothing to us can be very disturbing for people with unstable minds such as the prisoners' and could cause disturbances such as riots amoungst the prisoners. Well, that's why you have guards people. Perhaps they don't have guards in this prison and have to just have to hope for the best.

As far as Canadian prisons go, today on the news it talked about how the prison in Regina, Saskatchewan is the worst prison in Western Canada. It was built in 1913 and apparently because it's age, it is possible for prisoners to break through the walls. They've even had some escapes this way. That's not a comforting thought considering that I live quite close to Regina and go there often.

You think you got problems, here in Kingston, Ontario , we have 7 Federal prisons within the city limits! And to keep in a railway theme , we have only 1 railroad. (CN)

I'm still in favor off packing them up and sending them off to a penal colony. Something like Midway or Wake Island in the middle of the Pacific or even Manhattan (Escape from New York) .... Go ahead..try and escape. Twenty years ...if you make, will make you quite happy to abide by the laws of the land.

Oh yeah and there should be a train there....

Steve Goodman could write another verse for this thread if we needed to make it right.

The only thing that hasn't been wrote about is momma, trucks, getting drunk, rain.

If we could just include these in the forum we may have it all right then.

I had to throw a little humor in here.

Hey Ron, at least its busy. Double mainline, lots of intermodal, via, etc. My Uncle lives within walking distance of the line and you can hear the horns a blowin' constantly.

Jeff

PS And come on, they don't have any REAL bad people in the Kingston pen, do they? [(-D]

Hey Jeff, You're right, it is fairly busy. I usually spend a couple of hours in the pm at the VIA station when I can get away. Yesterday there were 4 freights and 4 passengers trains in the 2 hour span.
Kingston Pen is home to some of the worst criminals in Canada. It is max security for creatures like Paul Bernardo who spends all his time in isolation because if he was in the general population of the prison he would be deader than a doornail !!!

I am proud to be Canadian as be a Rail fan..in years past there was the Via
Rail accident where a teenager tampered with the switch.the youth was very
much given the royal silk glove treatment with the Railroad CN Rail accused
of using the wrong type of lock which was used for generations.in the end he
confessed to not only tampering but watching it happen.

Sound like Canada is following her Mother country. It's against the law to own a fire arm in Britain. It also is against the law to defend yourself. Seems a fellow opened his door to find two thugs with a gun wanting in. He managed to grab a Samarai sword and started swinging. Both gunmen fled with one badly cut about the head. The Gestapo arrested the HOMEOWNER for assault. He was sentenced to EIGHT YEARS! Jumping Jehoshephat! We have cold blooded killers in this country who serve less time in the slammer! Remember that they want to do this here, too! BTW, that low whimper you hear is the do-gooders bemoaning the poor bloodtubs on death row here in Absurdistan-by-the-Bay. [They do have some railroads left here in Absurdistan. That should help me pass Doggy muster! :^Q ]

Actually Canada has more guns per capita than the US.
Seems we just use them more for sport rather than killing our fellow citizens.

Don't give me that treacle, Mac; millions of US citizens own plenty of firearms. The inner city drug thugs do most of the killing. It's not about "sport" in our Constitution when it says we have the "Right to keep and bear arms..." It's about keeping the government from getting out of control, like the British Gov. has done. That stuff came from the nut who shot up a Scottish school; everyone got all weepy and concluded that the gun killed all those people, and if guns were banned, that couldn't happen. When it really was the evil XXX who used it. Now a man can't defend his home or family over there. The only people with guns now are the criminals and the Bobbies [who were unarmed for many generations before now.] There have been many cases here where a citizen with a gun stopped a shooting spree or other violent crime, but the "news" people don't want to dwell on that; it doesn't fit their agenda. [BTW, there are some railroads in those inner city neighborhoods. That's for you, Doggy babe!]

we have the "Right to keep and bear arms..."

I always thought it was the right to keep and arm bears....

You can defend yourself in the UK,, it's just that you have to do it with your bare hands, or a broken bottle at worst. But you mustn't use excessive force. You're only allowed to beat the blighter into submission eh what.
There was that bloke in Norfolk who used a shotgun on some burglers and killed one of them who was only 16, he got put away for 5 years.
The prison he was at was unfortunately not near a railway line.
Generally a lurker by nature

Be Alert
The world needs more lerts.

It's the 3rd rail that makes the difference.
