On the way to work this afternoon I saw:

UP 4520 (I think the number is right, I was bearly able to see it from a distance)

UP 1936

They were pulling a general manifest train heading to Van Buren and parts beyond. [;)]

took a nice trip to Strasburg... saw two Septa commuter trains in transit... thing is, they have the same type of cars still used by Septa in the museum in Strasburg... i should have some pics up soon...

When: Thursday, 13 May, 2004, between 8:30 and 9:00 AM CDT.
Where: At several points along Golf Road in Des Plaines, Illinois and somewhere on I-294 North, on the former Milwaukee Road line that runs into the former C&NW New Line.
What: A train of flatcars loaded with military equipment, some painted for desert operations. Mostly trucks and humvees, no tanks or other tracked vehicles observed. The train was headed north and west. I first noticed the train while waiting to make a left turn at Golf and Rand; I was able to see it at Golf and River. Passed under the train as it crossed bridge over Golf Road, and passed over it where the line passed under I-294. Could not see motive power, nor length of train.

ok, all sightings were from yesterday... CP GP38-2 #7310... A CP caboose... 2 CSX AC4400CW's #425 and 42x... didnt catch the last number of the second unit and a Conrail GP40 443x

A bunch (didn't count them) of Lake Erie, Franklin & Clarion hoppers being unloaded at a local co-gen plant. The reporting marks were covered and replaced with "JTSX". Sorry, haven't looked it up yet.

Yesterday while on the way to work I saw Wisconsin Central boxcar 27637. I hope that is the correct number. I was driving and going under a railroad overpass (originally Rock Island now UP) and only part of the boxcar was visible because of trees. Just at the last second could I see the number so I hope I got it right. Some people like to keep track of car numbers and keep very accurate records of them. I just like to see them and every now and then report that I saw one. [:)] [;)] [:D]

The other day while on the way to work I saw a NS engine. It was too far away to get a number or tell how many engines were behind it. [:(] [V]

Back on May 16, i saw UP 3300 "United Way" . It was the second unit on an eastbound at Lombard. Also, same train, 4 old rusty Southern Pacific Tunnel motors. Interesting train, my pix didnt turn out so great. Train was too fast and the sun bad.

I have a question about the transition phase difference between EMD and GE units mentioned in your forum post. Which builder's products are you identifying as having the rougher transition phase? It's a small, inconsequential item for sure, but I'm interested in the answer.

Recently I saw a strange lash-up on the BNSF River Sub by my house. Here's how it went:
1. SD40-2 --- BN
2. SD70MAC --- BNSF pumpkin
3. SD50 --- Oakway leasing, still in full EMD paint
4. C44-9W --- BNSF pumpkin

I couldn't figure out why BNSF would running an A.C. unit in the middle of 3 D.C. units espically since D.C.units have the transition phase with the traction motors, and A.C. units do not. Also, why they would be running a single GE in the midst of all those EMD's ( GE's have a much different transition phase than EMD's [much rougher] and just one GE in a lashup of all EMD's can screw up the transition of the EMD's). A friend of mine suggested that it was a power shortage because he saw a SUPER odd lash-up himself, It was a coal train running in DPU, up front;

A csx ge 40-8 a bnsf dash 9(norange of course) and a wc sd-45 waiting to turn in deshler.Later were picking up cars in Defiance.

Yesterday, Northbound from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, train full of military equipment such as humvees, semis, front end loaders, and boats. No artillery and such, clearly an engineering unit. It was led by UP C40-8 #9151.

I think, but don't hold me to it because I was driving and only got to see it for a second and also because I am kinda forgetful about numbers, that it was 7226. It looked like a SD40-2 but like I said I only got to see it for a second.

Yesterday (Sunday, May 23) while foaming at BNSF Eola Yard outside of Aurora, IL I saw a west bound Z train with three Dash-9 units (nothing exciting about this yet, hey?), and simply yawned until I saw no less than six BNSF office cars on the rear end, including the car with the full glass rear end carrying the markers on the rear end! Now THAT made my day!

BNSF power on a CP train 183, Bensenville to Twin Cities intermodal. This is the third time i have seen all BNSF power on this train. Sometimes i even see UP power pulling.

I didn't write it down either so it could be I didn't remember the number correctly at all. But like I said I just got a glance at it while driving over the yard on the interstate. But it was not a GE.

A cnw unit 8086 on the point of a csx train going to defiance.other up and bnsf units around deshler and wrent a wrecks. and 2 indiana and ohio sd 40-2s shoving grain cars into a siding in Hamler.Also a cp train on csx coming home.(did i mention matt is my good luck charm?)

Saturday while getting ready for work I heard the whistle of UP 3985 as it was coming into town. It was scheduled to be here around 4 but arrived about 2:50. As I was driving to work I noticed the yellow passenger cars had just cleared the wye and were setting near the Jenks Shop.

I was scrambling to find pen and paper and forgot the UP number but wanted to make sure I got the CSX number since I don't see as many of them.

As the 3985 was leaving an Intermodal train came by pulled by:

9705
and
1813 both UP units.

The 3985 also has a threatre car. It is number 203 and is the "Idaho".
I didn't know they had a threatre car. [:0]

two Conrail switchers coupled together in a yard... one now belonging to CSX, one to NS... one is definately a SW1500, the other im 90% sure of it being the same... couldnt get the first number of it unfortunately, had to go by sight compared with the first one

Thankfully I have reliable transportation with great gas mileage and I can travel to see trains! Now if the weather would just cooperate!
