Going back to the subject matter - what happened to:
The lost art of waving, courtesy, respect, kindness, helpfulness, smiling - a lot of this has been lost to me first, isolationism, paranoia, etc. I won't belabor the point, but I will restate my earlier posting -
Engineers, Conductors and anyone else - you wave first and if I am not too busy writing down the engine numbers, I will wave back at you. And even smile at you because you acknowledge that I am a fellow human being.

Uh-huh - I quit reading it at page seven.
All I was getting out of it was ....
Unfortunately, I subscribed to the thread and my e-mail was constantly flooded with responses !!!

You think this thread is asinine at 20 pages? How about those silly coffee shop threads:
"Oh, I'll have two eggs over easy and toast with no butter, just a little orange marmalade. No sausage or bacon for me because it gives me gas. Then I'll go out to the yard because the birds talk to me. We'll sing Kumbaya together and wave to the train engineers if it doesn't rain. And we sure could use some rain today... the gooseberries look a little wilted and you know how much Grandma wants to make gooseberry pie for everyone here... otherwise, it will be oatmeal cookies and porridge for dinner..."
Yes, to each their own, and those threads are endless and harmless, but asinine nonetheless...
Sheeesh.
Well, I don't think it has been totally asinine or worthless. I think we have exposed and dealt with some sensitivities that many of us didn't suspect existed, both among RR employees and among railfans. And I think that mutual understanding has increased as a result. Despite some heat several pages ago, it seems that most of the recent posts have been relatively civil.
FWIW, I most often get waves back; and it doesn't upset me when I don't.
Now I can eat my oatmeal cookies and porridge and feel good about it. LOL.

Yup.
Some of the diner denizens don't appreciate my forthright comments--I've gotten called a few names, gotten telephone threats from people I don't know, took things personally, and won't go back. I still peek in, because some people I'm proud to call my friends frequent the place and sometimes say something important, but nonetheless seem to go for this kind of .
Yes, to each his (or her) own.
Back to the original subject--if you're lucky enough to catch me in a cab, and wave in my general direction, I will gladly return the wave. If I'm distracted while doing it, though, please don't take it personally--I also have a job to do.

I've really wondered about those coffe shop threads, too. At least I know it isn't just me.
They just seem a little too make believe-ish, and there are some that take it a little too seriously.
I dare not say anything bad about them, however. You start to feel like you are taking candy from a baby or something. Or making fun of an infant. Something along those lines.
.... I have this funny feeling we're heading towards a few more pages ....

It's a clique, they are fiercely and mindlessly loyal to each other, they are well-organized, and they don't take kindly to strangers with opposing viewpoints. I once made the mistake of engaging one of their more-entitled-feeling members in a discussion -- in a regular thread, not in the 47,000-post gang-hug thread, mind you -- and quickly his friends filled up my email box with all kinds of threatening and profane and unkind emails.
It was pretty amusing. I just laughed them off as people who believe Lake Wobegone is a real place.
But I have no intention of going in there. Can't think of a reason I'd want to.
But I'm glad all of those posts are archived. Ya never know when you'll need to look up what someone ordered for breakfast six years ago.

Steak, eggs, and a wave from my friendly neighborhood railroad worker. =Þ

Daing... I ain't had supper yet, you start talking about food, the neighbors are having a cookout and MY house is filled with the aroma of it... if you hear a growling sound... it's MY stomach.
I guess I gotta go get some food, and then go wave at some trains for a while... if any of you train crews see a car with a banquette spread over the dash, I apologize in advance if I then make you hungry.

Is it just me or is this THE funniest thing I have ever read?

It's not a real place? But I heard him talk about it on the radio, are you insuating that they lie on the radio? Engineers that don't wave, Lake Wobegone is not real--aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

As a contributor to the diner I do take real exception to the thoughts maligning the diner.
I visit with several people that have become great acquaintences. This is where we catch up on things going on. The people on this forum that point fingers are the same people that, in the case of one, aren't telling you the whole story on why they don't like the diner and the others want to only talk on lofty subjects that leave the rest of us that aren't as knowlegeable on "train" subjects completely out of the loop.
I can't hold my own on most of the topics that are endlessly argued over so I go where I can be comfortable and just not have to work too hard at making small talk. At least I feel part of the forum.
Our own forum moderator made fun of the diner and seems some of the rest of you have picked up the gauntlet and go forward in his absence.
As with topics I don't care anything about, I don't read them. I suggest you stay out of the diner and leave the few people that go in there to have a good time alone. They have as much right to this forum as do the rest of you. Sweep off your own doorstep before you start cleaning off the diner's front steps.

Why is waving to a a train a train subject.
This is something little kids do.
This is so stupid because a few of you have your shorts in a not because someone
on the choo-choo wont wave.21 pages of crap.
Most of us who have work in the rail world for many years have better things to do than
wave, how would you like us to come to your desk job or what ever and stand there and wave to you.
Grow up

Mook -
There's nothing wrong with the Diner, period. Feel free to ignore the naysayers...
Everyone should be able to march to their own drummer around here, I know I do...

Thanx LC - I know I have a whole percussion group.

We got your back.
The diner is a great thing. It nice to see people tell a little bit about there life with us all.
Keep up with your posts always a good read.

Am I the said moderator in question here?
They have as much right to this forum as do the rest of you.
That's very true (to a point). I appreciate everyone's contributions to this forum, and the camaraderie that is the result of this forum. So much so, that I'm having lunch with a forum member two hours from now. In fact, that person is a contributor to the diner.
With that being said, this technically is a forum designed for people to discuss railroading, not fictitious breakfasts. I greatly appreciate the bonds that have been formed via the coffee shop, and I know there are a lot of meaningful discussions - both related and unrelated to railroads - that happen there. I can understand that everyone wants to keep tabs on their friends and know that's new in their life, and the strength of our community is the fact that many of our members do such a great job of interacting with the other members.
The rub that non-diner members have against the diner are the silly fictitious discussions that take place. I'm in middle, because I know how important the community aspect is, yet I fear how many potential members with great knowledge of the railroad industry might write our forum off because they view it as being silly.
Bottom line, I want this "us vs. them" mentality to stop. If everyone could move closer to the middle, we'd all be better off. (Mean that non-diner members understand that the community/camaraderie is very important to the forum, and the active diner members understand that we're trying to run a serious forum about railroads.)
I'm not sure how this posted landed in a thread about engineers waving or not waving. From my experience, some do, some don't. I don't hold a grudge against those who don't. I figure I'm a tiny speck along the landscape and they're riding high in the cab. Maybe they didn't notice me.
Now, big hug everyone!
Bergie
You mean like waving is a "train subject"?
Have yet to see anything in the GCOR or NORAC rules about waving, and I can't find anything on the FRA, AAR or NTSB websites about it, so it must not be train stuff after all, therefore not relevant to the forum...
And, with a screen name like Pop a Zit...well, calling others adolescent would seem to be somewhat silly.
You guys are calling the folks who frequent the DDCS thread a clique, or arrogant, or...
Yet if you could read your own postings on the subject, from an objective point of view, it would seem a clique of arrogance resides here too.
You sound like a bunch of little kids, who didn't get picked for the sand lot ball game, so now you form your own group of kids, and spend you time putting down the game and those who did play...real grown up of you guys, huh?
Funny Carl, I seem to remember you posting there quite a lot...and making friends with several of the folks from there...Mookie, me, Willy...wonder what that young man thinks of your behavior now...what an example you are showing to a young man who takes what you say and explain as gospel.
You just insulted him and most of his friends...good show.
You cats need to do a little growing up of your own, if something as light as the DCSS thread gets under your skin.

It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
Waving is not a train subject. In 31 years of railroading no one told waving is part of my job.
I guess your one of those guys when you see one of them big trucks with a air horn
you pull your arm up and down to try and make them honk.
A train crew should be aware of what is going on the the cab and the track
ahead of him.
Dear "Diner" Denizens:
I don't object to anyone posting in the diner. But, as a relative newcomer to "this" forum, the first impression I got was that it was just plain wierd; 'with a capital wie', as Cat [from Red Dwarf] would say.
Now that I understand the purpose of the thread, it makes a bit more sense, but it is still a bit wierd. I don't expect that I will enter and order anything because I tend to want to stick to a bit more realism and given the premise of the thread and all the "orders" being placed, I seriously wonder about any other message therein. Hypotheticly we read:
"I'll have Chicken Cordon Bleu.""Comin' right up!""Ummmm, you're a good cook.""Thanks, I like to cook 'em the way you like 'em.""I've gotten real sick just now."
Hey, wait a minute, 4 non-reality statements followed by something that COULD be serious, but given the lack of reality in the previous statements, I question the validity of it. Should I be callin' 9-1-1 in their city, or is the person jesting about the virtual cooking?
Given the non-reality of the whole premise of the thread, can I believe anything that is written about any subject in the thread?
Having said that, can anybody believe anything in any thread?
Let's get REAL personal here, and ask, "Can YOU believe anything 'I' write?"
I can tell you that I am an honest person and always tell the truth. There are two problems with that statement. If I am a dishonest person then the statement is worthless. That is obvious. The other problem is that maybe I don't know the truth (maybe I can't handle the truth!). I make statements based on what I know, but maybe what I know is not reality.
I have absolutely no desire to mislead anyone... I actively do not want to ever do so.
Humor is a wonderful thing and, from my viewpoint, is very welcome in discussions on this forum. Humor sometimes involves lying. Sometimes it involves revealing the truth in an acute, or sometimes obtuse, way!
Keeping the "wierd" humor confined to just one thread is one way to handle things. Personally, I don't know anyone on this forum well enough to know when they are being silly or when they are being a fool. I am learning to recognize that some are just stupid and some I am learning to respect. Some had some respect and lost it... it is odd how hard it is to earn respect and how easy it is to lose it... just like money, I guess.
Pop quiz:
One of the things that seems to cause a great eroding of respect is immediate defense upon perceiving an insult when others do not see that an insult was offered! [ ] <-I was a gonna put a smiley betwixt those two brackets, but I couldn't figure out which one.
