My favorites:  For steam power, the ACL R-1 4-8-4's with their 80" drivers.....last of the ACL's steam orders.  Wish there were some preserved.  For diesel power, the ACL's E3's in the original royal purple and aluminum- what elegance whether in the lead of a string of purple heavyweights or streamlined stainless.

Steam?  Why can I only have one fave?  Albion's SAMSON 0-6-0, Baltimore & Ohio's ATLANTIC 0-4-0 and #7 ANDREW JACKSON 0-4-0, any of the smaller Beyer-Garratts [2-6-2+2-6-2], Bridgeton & Saco River's #5 2-4-4-T, Camden & Amboy's JOHN BULL 4-2-0 and #30 JOHN STEVEN 6-2-0 [my most favorite], Cdn National's J-4-e 4-6-2 Pacifics, Cdn Pacific's D-4-g 4-6-0 Ten Wheelers, Darjeeling Hamalayan's 0-4-0-STs, Denver & Rio Grande's #3 SHOU-WA-NO 2-4-0 and K-27 2-8-0s, Denver & Salt Lake's 2-6-6-0 class 76s, Denver South Park & Pacific's Mason Bogies 2-6-6-Ts, Great Northern's #1 4-2-2 Stirling Single of Great Britain, Little River's #126 2-4-4-2, Liverpool & Manchester's ROCKET 0-2-2, London & North Eastern's #4468 MALLARD, Montreal & Champlain's JOHN MOLSON 2-2-2, New York Central's J-3-a 4-6-4 Hudson's, Thousand Islands' #44 4-4-2-T, Richard Trevithick's Pen'Y'Daren, Union Pacific's #105 2-8-0, the Wabash 2-6-0 [modeled by Kemtron], Western & Atlantic's 3 GENERAL 4-4-0 and most of the smaller geared locos.

Diesels?  Anything w/ connecting rods on the drivers, ALCO FAs, PAs, S switchers and RS road switchers, Baldwin's  Centipede, Bombardier's LRC, Fairbanks-Morse's CPA-16-5 5-axle hood units and their H-16-44s and H-24-66 Trainmasters, General Motors' FTs, GM-T-1 Aerotrain, GP-7, GP-9, GP-30, NW-2, SD-7, SD-9, SW-1, SW-7 and SW-1200 and the McKeen passenger interurbans.

Believe me, this IS the short list.

Of course, w/ steam it can be a favorite loco, but w/ diesels, paint schemes are a factor.  And it's hard to beat the D&H's PAs in that Santa Fe war bonnet style.

Graham.

I've always liked the K4s and GG1s.

As for diesels, the F69PHAC is my favorite. I just wish I knew anything about them except for their appearance.

Some of my favorite locomotives are:

Steam: The 4-8-8-4 Big Boy

any of the Garrat Locomotives that have at least a 2-6-2 + 2-6-2

and Pensys 4-4-4-4 T1.  Even though it was a failure at least we can all agree that it looked cool.

Electric: The GG1 rules supreme in my book as it lasted longer than half a century.  Also the styling of the engines make them look cool.

Diesel: any of the early Diesels with the streamlining and nice figures before they got all big and industrial looking.

hmmmmmmmm let me think.......................o yeah the Union pacific big boy and challenger. the nyc 20th century limited is a cool i would really like a rivarossi  one but can't find one.
Be specific, Ship Union Pacific!! Road of sreamliners. Serves all the west. Bill Leider has the layout of my dreams. Someday i will rise to his greatness and have the most true to blue-print replica of the Union Pacific railroad in Utah and Idaho in HO scale.

Because if there is more than one then it isn't a favorite, it is a locomotive of interest among others.  Besides making a list of locomotives one likes or is interested in isn't hard, choosing A favorite is.   From your list and how you wrote it I would say the 6-2-0 John Steven was the favorite.

My favorite locomotive is the Southern Pacific Cab Forward.

Why?

Because I am fortunate enough to have seen them running.

And, I got in the cab of one,

sat in the engineers seat,

played with the throttle,

 and played engineer.

Alas the engine was cold.

Finally was able to buy a Broadway Limited AC-4.

Doesn't fit in on my On30 mining outfit,

but who cares.

That was a much more intersting post to read than most.  Perhaps you could take it out and visit other layouts to enjoy and let others enjoy it at the same time!
