Hello everyone who’s still up.  Well, OK, Chuck and Kathy and you “Other Coasters”…you’re up way later than we are in this part of the continent.  I was able to try out staining the groundcover by wicking the paint wash up to the rock castings, worked well, once I had the right dilution to do the trick, and sorted out which size brush to use for which part of the process.  It took an hour to do this much, but as you see, it’s fiddly work between the rocks.

This time the colour has come out much more true to “life”.  It may be the time of day the photos were taken.  Those blue ones from yesterday were under all fluorescent light, while these are a mix of daylight and fluorescent.

I heard from Ed today, Here’s his news:

Not much new down here.  Life continues about as always.  New (first) grandchild born a month ago to my daughter near Houston.  We went up there for a couple of weeks.

My email isn't working on my home computer so I have to come down town and rent one at one of the internet cafes to read/send email.  Kind of a pain in the butt.  Most of the sites I can access and read at home.
...So, Congratulations Ed!

PC:  Where was the fuel pump on that Fiat Spyder?

Thanks for paying CapeJim to cook for you tonight.

Scott:  It’s hard when you want to help but can’t, isn’t it? Hope it all works out for her family soon….I see you know who to hand it over toAngel [angel]

Colby:

In Model RR news: My HO Layout is a wopping 7ft x 7ft with 2 really long sidings.
…Sounds good, how far a reach is it to the furthest tracks from the edge?

Alex:  I’ve been waiting for a good excuse to use this gif.

CapeJim:

Haven't heard much out of our Northeasterners/Nova Scotians since yesterday - are they still snowed in?
…This Nova Scotian never was snowed, and thankful for it.  Dick said he got 17” (forecast 6”!!!)….but then he’s so much further SOUTH than we are!

I’m calling it a day.  Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Good evening gents.......what is that sound?   Why it's the sound of............silence!!! The three grandsons are home now. Would you belive that when mom and dad came home, the baby hung onto my neck and would not go to them? I guess the little man really bonded with Grampa. I miss him tonight , ........the little engineer.

No melting today here, only 25F, windy and cold all day with off n on flurries. Tonight it is clear as a bell and you can see every star in this moonless sky.

CAPE JIM:  Dick sent us a tanker car of Maine maple syrup? Hey, thanks, Dick!  Jim, I send tankers from Massachusetts, not Maine. AND, the Maple Syrup comes from Vermont, the land of Maple trees....Maine is the PINE TREE state. We have the Maple Syrup send via tankers down the former B&M tracks along the CT River to the Diamond in Palmer, Ma, then they are switched to the main CSX track ( former B&A ) for shipment to Missouri and points west.

DER JOHN: With the Gulf Stream just off your coastline, you are pretty well protected from heavy snows, New Brunswick gets the lion's share of snow, probably Moncton. Hey, I love the rock faced mountains, this last attempt came out fantastic !!!

MIKE: Nice photo shots.....too bad not much action on the mainline...where are those Ethanol cars anyways.

Time to hit the sack, see you guys for breakfast,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Evening Gang: I went back to the WGH show today. I took my son and we had a great time. I really hit pay dirt right off when I met Michael Stephens the new president of Athern. We had a nice long vist. It seems he's from Cederberg Wisconsin and went to school with one of my distent cousins. It's a small world. his father was also an iron ore road modeler. I asked him about the old MDC ore cars and he said that they are coming back late this year. Of course they will be rtr and more expensive. I'll have to hit the discount stores or hope that they do some sales like Walthers did. Later I stopped by the both that Michael Broggie had for the Disney book. Again I had a nice visit but it was way too short. He did sign my copy of the book and the DVD. I hadn't been planning on getting them untill I heard his prensentation. I'm glade that I did. I watched part of the video and thought it was great. I have just had time to glance through the book and it looks very good.

Other then that Mary Ann and I finally got the front yard mowed and cleaned up some. Actually she did most of the cleaning up since I was at the train show. Tomorrow I'll start on the back yard. The grass back there is really heavy and may give the old diesel yard tractor some trouble.

Hey Ed: Congrats on the grand kid. Aren't they great? Have you got um a train yet?

Well I guess I'll head for bed. I'll see you all tomorrow.

Good Night All

Quick stop back in before I head home for bedtime...

Dick, sorry 'bout getting your location mixed up - I just figured with how cold your winters get and the snow that you got lately, that the 'Ma' in your (short) profile had to be Maine (or maybe I was thinking Vermont or New Hampshire....Confused [%-)] ) I do know my geography better than it would appear. So, will you be able to sleep in the afternoons without your nap buddy? Wink [;)] I bet you'll sleep really good tonight, though.

Thanks, DerJohn, for posting Ed's note - good to hear what he's been up to. Don't know if I could survive for long without my internet fix connection...Shock [:O] By the way, the rocks look nicely done. Thumbs Up [tup] At first, the head on view of the viaduct threw me off, until I looked at the other picture from the side (D'oh...!Banged Head [banghead]). If your other pics were taken with just fluorescent lights, that explains a lot. As a former photographer, I could tell you more than you likely want to know, but short version is: fluorescent lights are not a photographer's friend...Thumbs Down [tdn]

Oh, and if you're reading through, Ed,

  CONGRATULATIONS!

on the new grandchild!

Scott, good to hear that you learned a little more about the girlfriend and what was (sort of) going on (and as DerJohn said, good that you know who to call on). Hang in there!

Paul, another good visit to the show, I see. I agree with you, I'd like to see those old Roundhouse ore cars in a kit rather than RTR (for the same rea$on$).

Guess I'm heading home to say Hi to that bed for the night. See you all tomorrow!

Blessings and a good night's sleep,

Good Morning All,

A brisk 24F this morning but the high should be around 40 so maybe we'll get some softening of this ice flow we're in. Can't get the main gate here at the shop unstuck which makes me nervous as it's stuck open. Yesterday was interesting as we ended up (well CFO did anyway) taking middle son back to Plattsburg as AMTRAK wasn't running that far north Sat or Sun. I stayed home to do the chores and get a bit done on the layout when the w..k was finished.

Good to hear that Ed's ok and apparantly he can monitior the site as he knew about the conumdrum with the stone shed. That's worked out well with the tracks sunken to flush and plastered in with stonework scribed in. Pics when it gets a little further along. Don't want any more pictures of paint cans, right? (it is supposed to be hidden track).

Speaking of Ed (and also Jim) is there a way to respond to messages sent through the board here? I've  looked a bit but haven't sussed it out yet. Still not up to speed with this computer stuff I guess.

Der - the grass and rock work came out fantastic. You're right, it looks spot on with the lighter highlights on the rock and the grass filling in nicely between.

Jerry - Glad the new locomotives are working out. Sounds like what I found with the HO stuff. The new equipment is so much better you tend to set aside the older in favor of the new. It does amaze me how much progress was made in the time i was out of the hobby.

Anyone seen Gearjammers' tank engine on Photo Fun? It looks a million bucks also with weathering done by her Hubby. The round log trestle is interesing also.

Well, it's crunch week as we get ready to leave for Savannah next week. Still lots to do and I need to get after it. CUL,J.R.

Mornin, just coffee Zoe

A cool damp morning here with a chance of rain today, highs in the 50's

JIM CG, there was a wooden tressel there before. Looked like they came in and cut the top off, then set the bridge on top. The IC has several wood tressels along that line. I've got a pic of a short one down by Cole, if I can find it

DER, that moutain looks real good now.

ED, congrads on the new grandbaby, they are special.

Dick, bet ya'll slept good last night after all the running round.  I haven't seen many of ethano; tankers yet, but I haven't been out that much.

Well need ta get on chores, I've 3 little hell'uns, J Bird, KC, and Leroy, and stuck in the house. Hope ya'll has a gooden.

morning guys! my layout is on my floor so I don't have to worry about bench work.. lol. I did have a RC crane that my mom wanted to toss out, but I gutted it and saved to controll, lights, wire ,ect. Even part of the plactic casing for the electronics which I turned into a crude power plant. I added a red light to it and put a pice of card board were there was a hole I have it hooked up to my track.

Oh, didn't know that - that is a novel way of hiding the track, JR. Wink [;)] (just razzin' you there).

JR, I had to go pull up an email I'd got through the forum, but usually, I think they have a link in the email if you want to reply to the sender's email (vs. if you just hit 'reply' to the forum-sent email, it goes into an unattended account). Hope that helps a bit.

Good Morning all,

For those of you in North East Ohio I picked up a few train show flyers:

  • - NMRA Division 4 at the Cuyahoga Fairgrounds 06-07 OCT 2007 Saturday 1000-1700 and Sunday 1100-1600, $6 admission.
  • - Norwalk & Western RR at the EHOVE Center, Milan Ohio 01APR2007 1000-1500. $3 Admission.
  • - Norwalk & Western RR 11NOV2007
  • - Cleveland all gage 26AUG2007 AT the UAW Hall 1000-1500, $4 admission.
  • - I was disappointed at the Lakeland Show, the big club layout from Lake County didn't show up, they must not of had enough members volunteer (St Paddy's Day) to set the layout up. However due to Walther's lowering the price on some of their rolling stock the used prices at the train show fell dramatically. Last year used rolling stock started at $5/car. I noticed this year the prices started at $2.50/car. Used assembled buildings last year started at $20 and this year they start at $4.

If I remember right, it's under the header.  I think I took out the mechanical pump because it was vapor locking because of the heat from the header, and I threw in a blockoff plate and mounted an electric pump to the firewall.  If you wanted to keep the fuel pump, you'd probably want to fashion a heat block from some sheet metal or something to keep the pump cooler.

Hey All,

Haven't posted in a while but have checked in regularly. Been suffering from depression and its getting hard to even go to work. You folks have made me smile and its helped. I don't know why I'm writing this but it seems that no one wants to understand. Just keep being told that I'm taking things to personal or not to sweat the small things. Easy for them to say as their hands aren't getting worse and their chest doesn't hurt pretty much all the time. I've got so much to do and I can't seem to get it all done, haven't worked on my layout for months. Sorry if I sound like a downer.

My prayers for all!

Gotta go.

Good morning, all.  I will have coffee and one of Bill's donuts.  The sugar might get me moving faster today.

Trent,  Chin up.  If you want something to chuckle about, they brought Philip's post on Murphy's Law's up this weekend.  I laughed my lips off.

JR,  Thanks for the compliments on Larry's weathering.  The little loco had been driving him crazy because it was so shiny.  The rickety log bridge is mine.  The logs were all  cut on our place.  I dried them for several years.

I finally got my work posted, but thought that I would share the box canyon rock work.

Well, back to the layout for a while then to town I go.

Sue

Trent,

Depression is a very real thing and it affects you in every area of your life.  It can be worse when it's coupled with failing health.  Trust me, I know about it.  My wife and both my children were diagnosed with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy a few years ago.  The conditions of this disease are very grave indeed.  As that sunk in, so did depression for my wife and I.  She basically shut down for a long time.  She felt helpless and to blame for the condition of our kids (it's hereditary) and the burden this would be on our marriage and me.  Now I don't know if you believe in God or not, but our faith in Him is what got us through.  You see, we realized that God is in control, and there is a meaning to life, and there is a purpose to all of what we were going through.  We chose to look for His purpose and not to waste our suffering.  This made all the difference in the world on how we looked at things.  Now this isn't the place for much more talk of this, and indeed I may have already crossed a line, and if I've offended anyone then I appologize, but if you want to talk more, feel free to contact me by clicking on my profile and sending me a message.  We can talk about anything you want, or you can just vent, whatever, OK?  I do understand where you're coming from though.  I've been there.

Good afternoon everyone, the little one has gone home, and already I miss that little man, he is so much fun. Sunny day here today, temp has climbed to 37F, so the melt has started very well, and by Thursday it is supposed to be in the 60's...what a roller coaster ride with the weather...but, it is New England, and this is how it works here, just like the NW with all their rain.

PC: There is no need to apologize as far as "I" am concerned. I cannot add much to what you told our good buddy Trent....nice job PC !!!!!!!!!! If more people placed their lives in God's hand and gave Him half a chance, I think they would really begin to see the difference.

TRENT: You are somebody, and you matter very much, God has a purpose for each of us. We may noy always see that purpose, or understand it, but TRUST in Him....your are our friend, and we CARE about you, just keep that always in mind buddy.

CAPE JIM: Here is your Geography lesson for today: The 6 New England states abbreviations are: Maine (ME) , New Hampshire (NH), Vermont (VT), Massachusetts (MA), it used to be MASS until the postal company went to TWO (2) letter coding system for states, Rhode Island (RI), and Connecticut (CT). There will be a quiz on Friday.

MIKE: You sure are one who knows all about younguns around the house...you get nothing else done, that's for SURE, I do  miss him though, we had a lot of fun. He loved his Thomas Train set.

SUE: Nice job !!!!!! I wish I were at that point in my layout, I just can't seem to get any time to get things going, every week there is a new problem or issue that takes my time...grrrrrr !!

Talk later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! And with that last post, I've earned the right to treat you all to a fine dinner!

So, what's it going to be?

Of course, Chloe and Zoe, with the help of Flo, will be glad to serve you whatever your heart desires, but I've asked them to have the Surf & Turf on special tonight as I want to be sure you're all well fed.

Hey Colby! I saw two lost wanderers down this way. Two Maine Central boxcars in a TFM led freight, heading north out of Leesville. There was also an unpatched rib side Wisconsin Central boxcar, about 50 - 60' in length.

Evening all

Today my Mom,sister in law, brother, oldest daughter, son in law, granddaughters, youngest daughter, wife, and I saw my Dad put into his final resting place here on this Earth. I do know without a doubt that he has a new body and is able to jump, run, laugh, and do things I can't even dream of yet. With that said,I hope you don't mind if I leave you with something he would always tell the grandkids when they would leave his house. "Don't take a wooden nickel, because it isn't worth a dime."

Thank you all for you thoughts and prayers during this time and for being friends.

Surf & Turf on special tonight

Philip,  Thanks for the treat.  I am sure that it will be succulent.  I have not heard about your layout progress.  I know that you have been out of town.

Jerry,  My husband and I are truely a team.  Sadly for him, I get to spend more time on the layout.  In the beginning, we always worked together, but now that I am not working as much, I usually do something on the layout almost daily.

Dick, I am sorry that you have those distractions that keep you from working on your layout.  I am driven.  The logging spur is not connected to the mainline.  Since this area that I am working on will not be accessible, I have to finish it in order to complete the line.  It is surely a puzzle.

Duke,  Our thoughts are with you and your family.  Friends can be great support.

Later, I need to check my rock project.

Sue

Good evening, Diners! Chloe, since you're buying, PC, I think I'll try the Surf 'n' Turf special, please! Dinner [dinner]

After Drill Sgt.Angry [:(!] PC's barking at us, I figured I'd better post tonight (or else!)...Shock [:O]

Sue, that box canyon section photo looks good - thanks for posting it!

Hoople, congrats on having enough saved up for the 2-8-0. Picking it up this weekend, or will you be able to get it earlier?Smile [:)]

Inch, that Maine boxcar must've been lost on the way somewhere, if it's over in your neck of the woods (so to speak).

Dick, thanks for the geography lesson (I really kind of knew that already, just had a brain freeze on the Massachusetts abbreviation earlier). After looking at that original forum post you made, I'm amazed at how it verged off onto the (non-related) topics! I guess some people just get riled up more easily than others (for whatever reasons). So, have you contacted the little guy's parents about when you can have him over again for a 'play day' or two, or are you ready for that just yet? Wink [;)]

Trent, you know we're here for you. Don't be hesitant about getting some help (on both kinds that PC mentioned). No need to go through this alone.

Duke, it's good that you have those good memories of your Dad. As you said, now he doesn't have the limitations of his old body. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Lifting everyone in the shop in prayers tonight. A lot (or all) of us can use some more prayers lately.

Blessings, strength and peace tonight and this week,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
