Good afternoon everyone!!! Busy day clearing the "backlash" snow that fell again last night after big one left for Maine and the Maritimes. 12F here now, so it is going to one cold night, at least a 2 dog night, maybe 3!!!

I have never measured a Barometric Pressure so low in Winter for a Nor'easter. This storm bottomed out at 29.06" last night as the Low center passed by Boston, due East of my location to the west 50 miles. This was like a Winter Hurricane with pressure this low, I was hoping to see it break into 28" range, but it fell just 0.06" short.

For any of you guys have relatives that are/were Firefighters, and I know Jeff is heavily involved in his town, here is a video that is both informative and moving. It is a training film for aiding families who suffer the loss of a firefighter.

mms://trinilearn.wmod.llnwd.net/a607/o1/previews/038-7009_pre.wmv

J.R. We were a bit luckier than you in southern CT, were mostly all snow here in central Mass highlands receiving 9".

Speaking of accidents that Jeff mentioned above, New Hampshire had a bad time of it this morning on I-93. Both lanes were closed with accidents due to icy roads caused by winds blowing the snow across the road making many icy spots. Car, trucks slid off the road, and several people were killed also.

Pennsylvania had their share of trouble during the storm last night when a trailer truck blocked all three lanes of a highway and no one could move. Cars ran out of gas, people were freezing in their vehicles, the Governor called out the National Guard to bring fuel, blankets and other support to the scene. This was one nasty storm in many states!!

So how many of you guys have sore backs today?

Hey, how ya doin'?

Come on in, sit a while in our virtual diner.  Let me introduce you to our virtual waitresses, Chloe and Zoe (the twins), and there's also Flo that fills in part time.  They'll take your virtual order, bring you virtual food, and you can pay with virtual money.

This is just a place that we come and hang out.  We talk about all sorts of things here, and sometimes even trains!  Lately the hot topic has been the weather with the way it's been in the midwest and the northeast.  Really though, we talk about all kinds of things here.

BTW, it's customary for the person who gets the top of the page to pay the tab for all on the page, but since you're new, I'll pick it up

So come on in, meet the guys, order up something for yourself and hang out a bit.

Chloe, I'll have a Moxie please,.....and whatever my friend here wants!

Good evening Diners.  Still cold and getting colder, and the wind won’t let up for the weekend either.

Mrr today was making 7 N Scale 15” x10” bollards for the edge of the wharf.  I used a thin sheet of rolled out FIMO, cut the things out with an Exacto knife, and cooked them at 150 C for 15 minutes in the toaster oven while Kris’ lunch time roll was warming up.  I did all this on a piece of silicone paper, so nothing stuck. (Don’t buy that BTW, it’s what self adhesive postage stamps come on, just don’t throw it out…or, as in this case it’s what AMI roadbed comes on too.)

I’ve painted them this evening, and will glue them on presently.

No I won’t, I just tried one and it’s too tricky, especially with ACC, for this time of night!

Dick:

Der John - did you fix that dinner for Kris?
…but naturally…well to be exact, I bought the chops, seasoned and cooked them.  The veggies we had on hand, a combined ops affair.  The 99% Cocoa chocolate bar she nibbled with her coffee was my idea too.Big Smile [:D]

OZJim

I actually thought about a holiday down south, but I doubt whether I could get a couple of 2X8 sheets of foam onto a plane.
…Maybe a squeeze, but since you will be cutting the sheets anyway, why not cut them there, and stack them into a shippable bundle, tape them and take them home? Then just re-cut and glue as needed.

I think I have some styrene around... that could work, yeah?
…sure, anything that will stack in layers, be glueable and be level at the end of it all should be fine.

Trent: Happy Anniversary!

Funit:  to the diner.

Hey are you guy's model railroaders or is this the weather men club? LOL
…not all, some may be “just” railfansSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  as you’ll see if you take PC up on his offer, a seat, and enjoy your coffee; this is a great place to hang and not get hung up by the Sign - Off Topic!! [#offtopic] crowd. (PC mentioned Flo, who’s new to me, but forgot Janie, who can outrun an ostrich, and never spill a drop.)  Mrr is the reason we’re here, however.  Care to tell us a bit about your plans? Interests?  BTW, first time top of page is let off free, so while RT is right, we waive it for you this time!

JR: I’ve been able to fix a 6”x9” N Scale Canada flag above the grey painted sign on the front door of the office / lab building, so your sister now has an official base of operations at the Omega 3 fish oil plant!

Too windy for our woodstove to work properly tonight.  The furnace just came on, not a good sign.

I’m off to bed.  Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Evening Gang:  Well today was cold but not too windy. I did some more  cleaning up in the barn. I cleaned off one area and under all the clutter was a HOn3 layout that I hadn't thought about in some time. It's a 4ft x 4ft that I got in a trade for something. I did some work on it and got it running at one time. I built a gallows turn table and installed it but it got busted up at sometime. I doubt I'll do anything with it but you never know. I did get enough room in the shop finally so I started working on the track panels for the 7.5in gauge. I got one stick of 2in channel cut up into 16in cross ties.

Funit: I guess the weather has been high on the list of things to talk about lately. So what's up with you? What scale are you in? Do you have a layout?

Jerry: Belated anniversary wishes.

Trent: Anniversary wishes to you.

Well I guess I'll head out and see what else is going on. I'll see you all tomorrow.

Good Night All

Good Morning All,

A chilly 12F out but the suns trying to show up. Still getting the support equipment ready to leave next Tues and the rest of us after that.

Got some time in the train room finally last night putting some mix down on the bare foam in places and paving the road to the gravel operation with cinders over which I'll mix plaster and gray paint to make a road. Plan is for the cinders to poke through like on real macadam and not be too smooth as it's a mainly truck traffic road. Also found the reason my auto reverser was acting up. Seems I left a sliver at the bottom of one of the cuts I made to isolate the section of track with the reverse in it. I filled the gaps with ca but under the right circumstances the rail ends would touch shorting out the reverse loop of the wye in question. Recut the gap and now it works correctly. The key was stopping everything when it happened and going through the possibilities one by one until I found the problem. So much for never put off till tomorrow what you can put off till the day after tomorrow.

Has anyone built any of the Woodland Scenics metal construction equipment kits? They seem inexpensive enough, but I worry about all those itty bitty parts.

Happy Anniversary Trent (and  many more) and welcome in to our newbie. Yes we sometimes discuss trains or models.   Gotta go w..k beckons. CUL,J.R.

Well, another cold one to start out today.  It's -5 degrees right now.  Thats a bit on the "brisk" side if you ask me!  Wind chills are in the -10 to -20 range.

Our next weather system will be a clipper moving in from the Northern Plains. This weak storm will produce a band of snow starting after midnight tonight and continuing through Saturday morning. Right now, it looks like most areas will see a 2"-3" snowfall by Saturday afternoon. As always, a couple of spots may approach 4".  Next week looks much better though.

Well, I've got school again this weekend and I teach, so my Saturday is going to be a busy one.  Sunday looks good though.  Maybe I can get something done on the railroad, huh?

Afternoon All:

Jeff that looks good. I do believe it would feed half the crew.

I have about 1/3 of the ties cut for the steel panel track. When they are all cut I'll cut the 1/2x1in flat for the rail and then I'll have to do the wiring for the milling machine. I figure a day for cutting the slots in the ties for the rail. I'll have to make a jig of some sort to hold the ties so I can lay in the rail and weld it to the ties. Oh ya. I have to drill the rail for the rail joiners. Lots of work but it will be nice to have some portable track.

Right now I'm kind of hungrey so I'll grab some lunch and have a seat in the corner booth.

See you all later.

Well all, please take it easy on my Credit Card tonight since I have TOTP honors. TY!

On the ‘off' MRR front come these items ....

2 of our local Wal-Mart Supercenters are closed due to too much snow on the roofs of those 2 stores. An interesting fact about Wal-Mart store's is they actually have sensors built in place to sense things like this and sound all sorts of alarms to warn the employees.

On a note of a different kind, seems early this morning, there was a horse barn collapse. From the sounds of it, it was due to too much snow. All the horses made it out alive; a few with minor injuries. Prayers for the family and the horses during this harsh weather we're having.

Dick - Seems you forgot another one of our regulars who is a volunteer firefighter in his village in Central NY!

On the MRR front comes this item ...

Please forgive me if someone else made note of this, as I did not see it. While getting my groceries a little bit ago, I happened to pick up a current March 2007 copy of Railfan & Railroad as it has a story on the WSOR. In reading parts of the article, I discovered it was about the Reedsburg Sub. Some of you may already know who I am talking about - yes folks our little SNoah has contributed to this article. I think I have seen some of the photos the author uses, but not sure if they are his or not. But at the end of the article, the author does thank Noah and another person for information contained in it.

Well all, time for dinner!

Take care!

Good evening folks:  Early start tomorrow for a museum related meeting, so I shan’t stay long.  I heard from KJ today, and he said it was OK to post his email for y’all.

I really need to get back to the Coffee Shop but you would hardly know what I have been through in the past six months. I lost my job, got a new one and lost it! Got another job (a good one), bought a new house, moved and

HAD TO DISMANTLE MY MODEL RAILROAD!

The good news is that I’m working on a new layout with a much bigger room (23x13) and in N Scale that will go a long way. I didn’t know how hard it would be to design a new layout, especially because my “prototype” almost matches the dimensions of the train room (to scale, of course).

I’m hoping to buy a couple of cases of flex track when we get the tax refund. The CFO is good for that! Among other things.

Send my regards to everybody. A day doesn’t pass when I don’t wish I had the time for a cup of coffee with you guys. That’s what makes your emails all the more precious.

KJ

Normal Scalers rejoice!  Our empire expands yet again!  Ken said he may drop in this evening.

Hey Jerry:  1947 was a brutal winter as I recall.  Is that why you chose the handle?  That sign in runaround is enough to give you a pitn without having one for real to start with.  I hope that’s cleared up now.Angel [angel]  I come in by the back door as a rule, and it  avoids the sign in nonsense.  That is, I bookmark the current page (or the one I’ve got to with replies, which ever is most useful).  Then, when I want to come to the diner I just open the bookmark in my browser, and Presto! Here I am.

JP:  That’s great news about Noah.. Don’t know where he’s got to these days, but he’ll go far that lad.

Trent:  Did you say Room?

Encouraged by the way the bollards made from FIMO turned out, I’m thinking seagulls are doable.  They are quite big, so should work out in N.

Time to call it a day.

<>all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Evening Gang:

I got the first rails cut for the track sections. It is amazing what some people think 1/2 of 20ft is. I had burchased some 1/2inx1in flat stock several years ago and had it cut in half to fit in my pick-up. So tonight I set it up to trim and found that some was 9ft11to 9ft10. The others were just as bad the other way. So some of my 10ft long  sections will be a tad short.

Thanks Der for passing on KJ's E-mail. I hope that things will settle down for him now. It's too bad he went over to the dark side though.

Well I guess I'll head for bed. Take care everyone.

Good Night

Dang! You take off a few months and they close the place down and move it off to someplace else and give it a new name to boot. Nice decor, though. But I had to search high and low to find you guys.

Thanks for the re-intro, John. I've missed you guys but have been so busy I'm hard put to get the things I need to get done. So I've let some old friends down. I'll try to do better in the latter department, though. Yeah, I bought a bonus room with a house under it. Can you imagine that? Now I have to get the new layout designed. I know what I want to do. It will be an extension of the original Maitland and Vira railroad but with Lewistown, Pa. where it belongs. The M&V will interchange with the PRR at Lewistown, so I should have plenty of action. It will go around three walls with Lewistown at the middle. I have to leave room for Jamie's new layout as well. But oh the bare foamboard.

The new job is going well. I'm still writing software for the DoD and loving it. I just hate the fact that I had to start all over with ZERO leave! Oh well. It'll build up quick enough.

Paul, what do you mean, "The dark side"?

Well I think I'll read a few of the past pages to get a feel for what is happening. I know I've missed a lot so I had better get caught up.

See you guys soon.

Good evening, Chloe - a cup of coffee and a brownie a la mode, please. Thanks, JP!

And a Sign - Welcome [#welcome]back, Ken! We have some new folks, but a lot of the same crew (so to speak...) around the Diner as we had in the CS. With the winter weather the past week plus, it's been one ongoing discussion topic, but we still talk about our layouts like before. Evil [}:)]Wink [;)] Good to hear that you have more room for your layout. Will you be able to use much of the old layout in the new room, or do you know just yet? I can send you links to some webpages with plans for bonus rooms (for ideas to start you thinking), but I'm sure you'll come up with your own plan.

Paul - guess you could use 2X2's (ripped 2X4's) in the corners and run your side supports close to the corners, so you could still have 10' sides. Time for a little jury-rigging and re-engineering (which given your former w..k experience, shouldn't be too hard for you). Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^] Have you been seeing any flurries out your way? We're supposed to have  some snow tonight (maybe 2-4 inches) into tomorrow. Guess we'll see how accurate they are (or aren't)...

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S  to sNoah on getting published (whether it was his photos and/or his article)! Looks like we have a couple of renowned railroad shutterbugs around the place, with sNoah and Inch getting recognition for their work! Thumbs Up [tup]

About 30 degrees (F) now, with some snow coming into the western part of Cape currently (they showed an outside pic from the TV station's camera in the west side of town). Might be flurries until suppertime Saturday, the weatherguessers are saying. So earlier I went by the store and got milk, salad fixin's, and ice cream (well, I was out of them and needed them anyway...). Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

The evening sports news is on, so I'll head home and start getting ready for bed. See you all in the morning, and everyone take care and stay warm!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
