How do you do your rock castings on a base like that? Do you pour in place, or glue on individual castings? I’ve been busy trying out various treatments to “pave” the road down to the wharf. As for roads, I use cut sheets of poster paper glued down and painted. This is then worked into the scenery.

Afternoon, an irish coffee dear,
Hey we got juice, after almost 8 hours without. Might not have been so bad, but the power company didn't come down and change the fuse for this line till 4 hours after they had the main line back on. They thought we should have had power without even checking this part. There's a couple board member got their backsides eat on abit and it's not over yet.
We've had mostly sleet and freezing rain till bout 2:30, then changed to all snow. Still might get 5 to 8 inches of snow on top of the ice.
Best get off here for now. I may try n catch up laters

Afternoon Gang: I got cold out in the barn. I'm also having a bit of a hard time finding places to put stuff I want to keep but don't want to move several times. The dogs stayed out in the barn several years ago and got upstairs. They managed to tear up a down matress so there is goose down all over the place. I'm trying to vacumn most of it up to save but I may just give it up. Mary Ann said to forget trying to save it.
Those live oak trees have been dead for a good 25 years now. I just took them down last year when the drilling company let me use there Sky Track. I pushed them over and then carried them to a place away from the coral. They had been great since they shaded the coral in the summer. Anyway they make great fire wood once you get them cut and split.
The weather is cool about 42f. The problem is the wind. It's blowing from the NW at a good clip. That makes it bad outside. The vet came out this morning and we got the heifers vaccinated with no problems. One heifer managed to slam my hand into the head gate. If I hadn't been wearing gloves I would be at the doc's getting it taken care of. As is I lost a small bit of blood. It goes with the terratory.
Well time to get back at it. I'll see you all later.

Evening all -
Sorry I have not been in as of late, but I've been lying low (dang head cold / sinus infection?) Went to the dr's this afternoon and he said he was not concerned and perscribed me some nasal spray to help clear the sinus congestion and at the same time, said that I was in need of a FULL PHYSICAL!!!!!!!!! So, off I left with 2 appointments for the next month (1 for blood and lab work and the 2nd for the actual exam!). Oh well, ya can't win them all
Had to run to the ex's place and get rid of the cat things she had at their place. She had to have it put down Monday morning as late Friday night, she had to take it to the ER Vet for a eval and was told it had Congestive Heart Failure and lots of fluid in it's lungs. ER kept the cat overnight and on Sat afternoon, she picked it up from the ER Vet and brought it back home with 4 different meds to get it every 12 hours. Well, regular vet called her Sat morning from his cell phone and said to bring it in to his office on Monday for a checkup. Well, vet gave her the options and said the cat just had too much fluid in it's lungs and it was just a matter of time (hours, days, weeks, months, etc) before it would pass on. So, she made the most difficult decision and had the vet put it to sleep. Needless to say, Josh is not taking this well at all. But, in time, he'll be fine. I think she's already looking to get him another one. I've offered her the option of taking Chopper (the one we had before we split) back, but she did not want to go that route.
Anyway, while enroute to her place, I saw a CSX engine pulling a Spreader (Jordan type I think). CSX Engine # was 5906 which when I looked up the history it is a B36-7 formerly Seaboard. The Spreader was CR # 64609. I'm wondering if they were getting it in position to assist with snow removal from the Rights Of Way in the area after the snow we have had of late and what we're in now.
It has been snowing since about 7pm now and there's about 2 inches already on the road. Just had a fire call as well for a possible garage fire. I would have responded, but I have lost some of my qualifications since I have been out on a Military Leave of Absence since October. I will say this... it is down right COLD outside now and snowing moderately. We're under a Heavy Snow Warning till 7pm tomorrow for about 24-32 inches by Thursday morning (5-8 tonight, 10-15 during the day tomorrow and another 5-8 tomorrow night! Does not bother me thought as I am on vacation all week!
Well all, time for me to get some things done around the apartment and relax and watch some tv and drink a beer or 2.

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010
I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
Well we are getting snow and lots of it. The counties to the west of me are under a Blizziard warning. So far we have about 6" on the grond and WX man is calling for a total of 24" by morning. Looks like he just might be right for once. GF left work at 9pm and said I-90 is snow covered and traffic is running about 35MPH. The back yard was drifted in to about 22" and yes believe it or not I had to snow blow part of the back yard so the smaller dog could go out and do her stuff. Cell phones are about useless since "the network is busy" and when I dial out with the house phone I get the wrong number every time even when I use a programed number.
How are the rest of your northerner's doing?
Jeff, how did you fair the bad WX down there in LA?

Good evening Trackside Diners. Waiting for the storm to start some time tomorrow. Snow and then rain, ‘tis said.
The earth movers prepared the site for the office and lab down by the wharf, and now I have to be patient, as I tried to level the drying sawdust / glue mix with wood filler too early, and wrecked it. Have to let it set some, and go at it again tomorrow.
What was really encouraging was that the mix I had saved from days ago (at least 10) when I last worked on the rock wall was still fresh and hadn’t soured or grown mould. I’ve kept it in an ordinary margarine tub in the train room. All I had to do was add a little more glue, water and a dash more sawdust and stir it up.
Now I’ve got the walls of the building set, I’m fine tuning how the floors and roof fit inside without ripping out the window glazing. I’m using clear plastic sheet that was the protector from the computer monitor on Kris’ computer when we bought her a fresh one back in the Spring. (more waste not, want not)
Discovered today that adding crash bars behind double doors in N scale is tricky, but do-able!
OZJim: I don’t think you need foam to do a river below track grade. Wasn’t the way to simply cut out the river bank shape from the plywood, construct a bank of suitable depth from strips of ply, ceiling tile, or whatever gives a level surface on which to attach the river bottom, a sheet of ply wider than the river bank. Coat the whole thing with white glue to seal it (cover up any high grade flooring under the layout before this step), and when dry, pour plaster for the river bottom? Paint, add the water of your choice, and enjoy!
I think our US friends are aghast at the price thing because of the exchange. Gang, the A$ is about US$ 0.78 as of tonight. That said, the price of foam is really steep for you, compared with North America.
Ryan:
I too remember that you were using wood filler for your roads a way back ago.
Jeff:
Der: Some I pour in place but most are poured separately and applied with Liquid Nails.
As for roads, I use cut sheets of poster paper glued down and painted. This is then worked into the scenery.…do you use acrylic paints, and if so, how does the poster paper behave when wetted with the paint? I’ve tried thin card, and found that the road buckled up in the wet, and didn’t dry smooth.
Better get this posted and make up the fire. It’s going to be chilly tonight.
Good night then, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.

I do a lot of casting joining, and haven’t done much painting / staining yet. I glue my castings on with white glue, but have used spackle too. In either case, I don’t think the plaster stains quite the same as the backing. As for roads, I use cut sheets of poster paper glued down and painted. Der: I fill in the joins with anything that's available and the liquid nails takes the latex and acrylic paints rather well. If you have a problem, coat it with a thin coat of white glue then paint it. On the poster paper for the road, as far as painting, use a very light coat. After it's dry apply another light coat. Afcter it's dry, seal it with shellac, let dry, then hit it with the heavy stuff.
The snow has begun here, it has been snowing since 10:30pm. This is only the 1st of the storm that moved in from the midwest. The big coastal Nor'easter is getting going down the coast near Virginia and will really let us have it tomorrow. We are expecting 12-16 inches here in central Mass, and 18 to 30 west of us all the way towards Albany, NY and north into the White Mountains of NH.
Boy, is it ever nice to be retired on mornings like tomorrow.......I had my share of driving in Blizzards in my working days, including the big Blizzard of '78 that closed this state for a week!! I drove home in the peak of the storm at 7pm, not a soul on the highway, in a real sucky car for snow, an over-powered 1969 Ford Mustang, V8, 302 engine. I made it almost home, could not get up the last two dead end streets to my home at the top of the hill.... I never saw the car for a week, the only thing sticking above the snow along the road was the tip of the antenna, as I drove it intentionally into the woods at the side of the road so that snowplows wouldn't kill it.
Time for bed, tomorrow will be a wild experience....drinking hot coffee by the wood stove and watching the Blizzard outside..LOVE IT !!!

I suppose it's like Guys in Warmer states and cities in Nth America who have a hard time finding foam, As I live in a warm climate area, (much of QLD is warm all year round) foam products aren't terribly popular, This of course rises the prices of products. I'm sure it would be cheaper in southern (cooler) states but then i'd have to factor in shipping for bulk items.

This is the layout plan updated, witthe extra piece spliced in to make a Rectangle. Thoughts?
Der:
I had remembered the the old cutting plywood out method, but i'd prefer not cut up the bench work, I think I might go with the old way, as I can't really afford the foam, as i'm buying the track tomorrow... (total) $555.50, however it could be a few dollars cheaper as i'm buying bulk. I'm going to grab some cork and start laying, it, if I can find the Jigsaw, I'll also cut the river out... Is there a way to make the river deeper than 1/2 an inch? as that's how thick my top is...as the bridge abutments and such won't look right sitting so low above the water... I guess I could say the creek is flooded I'll figure something out...
All for now,
Oz
Morning all -
The snow just keeps on falling here in Central NY. I'd guess we have had about 12-15 inches since it began at 7pm last night. Everything around here is mostly closed or delayed their openings. My unit even closed the base to all non-essential personnel (that's everyone but the police and fire dept and plow folks who need to be on duty today)
Anyways, Chloe - how about a nice cup o' joe since I'm here. I'll go sit over in the corner booth and see if there is any action today. I doubt it thought with all this snow and the storm.
Take care!
Well, the snow storm has passed. Out at the house we ended up with 18" of snow and drifts 4 1/2' tall and ice on top of it all. Took me an hour to shovel my drive out, and my drive is only long enough to hold the cars (side by side) and have a sidewalk pass behind it.
Here's the "official" weather report.
All schools in Central Indiana are closed today.
Madison County has issued a SNOW EMERGENCY. The Emergency Operations Center has been activated. The Madison County Emergency Management Agency is working closely with the Madison County Highway Department to monitor the weather situation. At this time, the highway department is reporting all roads are snow covered and drifted due to the blowing winds. Madison County Government Center and Annex offices are closed Tuesday and Wednesday due to the weather conditions. This does not include the city of Anderson.
A SNOW EMERGENCY has been declared by the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners for all of Hamilton County north of S.R. 32. They have also placed a Snow Advisory, for necessary travel only, for the remainder of Hamilton County roadways. All Hamilton County Courts and Government offices, excluding public safety, are closed Wednesday. If any person is scheduled to appear in Hamilton County Night Court on Wednesday, February 14th - it has been canceled because of current road and weather conditions.
Hancock County has declared a SNOW EMERGENCY. All offices are closed.
Indianapolis is open, but just barely.
The bottom line is that travel is either not permitted, or not encouraged in the counties affected, and the link explains some of those issues.
I live & work in or next to all these areas.
Think I'll head home after a while as all businesses are closed today.
So, how'd the rest of you come out here in Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio?
Good morning, how's every little thing today.

Good morning everyone......we received 2" of snow overnight, then it turned to sleet. The temp is only14F, so might say " how come no snow"? Well, being only 50 miles from the Atlantic which is at 47F, this big storm is bringing in copious amount of moisture at 47F at the mid-levels of the atmosphere. Near the ground it is only 14F, therefore we get sleet. It is supposed to turn back to snow as the storm pulls past Cape Cod. Areas west of us by say 40 miles are getting buried in snow, upwards to 3 feet.
The storm is really starting to gain strength, the Barometric Pressure here is now 29.67 and falling like a rock. It is rapidly approaching hurricane barometric pressure readings. The seacoast is going to get pummeled with hurricane force winds in the 1st quadrant ( NE quadrant ).
JP: You are going to get buried in upper NY state my friend.

Good afternoon everyone, the cold air is in a hellava battle with the warm moist air from the Atlantic. The colder air, being heavier air isn't budging from our area, so it changed over to heavy snow at 11:30am. We have 8" on the ground now and a mixure of snow and sleet at times. The winds are at a constant howl about 20 mph and gusting to over 40 at times. The snow and sleet is blowing all over the place, quite a scene outside. Love it!! Here is a shot of the latest radar image from our area. I live just west of Worcester, halfway into the white area on the map indicating snow.
JEFF: Ahhhh come on Jeff, where is your sense of adventure!!! You can watch people skid around on the highways, slid off the road into the woods sending the wildlife scurrying for cover......as their IPods fall to the floor, their coffee goes flying all over their cloths, their cell phone bounces off their heads a few times as they crash over stumps, logs and rocks... that beats Tornados and drenching, flooding rains doesn't it ? LOL
I am sitting at the PC, looking out the window with a nice cup of coffee, watching nature in full winter hostility. Warm as toast inside listening to the timbers creak in the roof as the winds gust to near 50 and snow slaps against the windows facing the Northeast.
MRR mag by my side, and a Micro-Mark tool catalog as backup...it just doesn't get any better then this!!!
