Philip, he has yet to build any of them! Recently he has gotten into sports (football and most recently basketball and hockey). Ben has spent a lot of time with friends from school and from around the neighborhood playing sports. If he is not on the phone with one of them he is outside playing hoops or football near the house. I can't complain much though he is on the A/B Honor Roll at school and plays the clarinet in the school band too. He never seems to slow down much; we even have a hard time getting him to sit at the dinner table for more than 10 minutes every night. The children sure do grow up quick!

I know right where you're coming from!  They do grow up fast!  Maybe those models will be good rainy day projects this spring.

Dick, yep so far the truck is running like it was before the "pop" last week. But for some reason I am still getting a vibration from the front end that seems to increase on acceleration when the engine RMP's are around 2,000 to 2,500 no matter what speed I am going, and not sure what that is? Any ideas?

Mike and Hoople, we lived in Champagne/Urbana for 2 years when I was a little tike in kindergarten. My dad was getting his masters degree at the University of Illinois and we lived in an apartment. I was only 3 or 4 years old then but I can remember the 3 to 4 feet of show in the winters and the ice storms. Even at that age we kids would run all around the neighborhood and no one was worried about us as long as we came home before the sun went down.

Hey Mike is that a photo of the Ham and Beans recipe that includes a few ashes from the fire?

Colby, take the advice from Dick and remember to save often, even after every sentence. It becomes habit forming and I find myself saving everything about 100 times throughout the day.

Garry, yea, 18 years in the restaurant industry and there are quite a few stories to be told.

Here is a short history of the places I worked: Hyatt Regency Hotel - New Orleans I started out in 1983 as an apprentice chef and then finished up as the Saucier making the soups, stocks and sauces for the entire hotel restaurants, worked there for about 2 years. Then worked for 2 years at the Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue and started there in the pantry/cold food prep then worked up to Sous Chef position. Then I worked for a catering company Innovative Catering for a year as the chef at a prominent law firm. Then I worked as a Chief Steward for Perry Oceanographics and was working offshore on the J. W. Powell research vessel off the coast of Maine and N.S. then we steamed to the coast of Miami and the Bahamas, and did that stint for about 9 months. This was interesting work feeding a 5 man boat crew and up to 10 scientists that would come on board for undersea research. Then I came back to New Orleans and worked at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant as a day shift sauté cook and worked under the wings of French chef Daniel Bonnot. Then I went into the health care industry and became chef at Elmwood Medical Center for a year, then 2 years as chef at Meadowcrest Hospital and eventually became Food Service Director at The Rehabilitation Institute of New Orleans and stayed there for 4 years. Then I went to work at Copeland's of New Orleans as a dining room manager for about 10 months. Then I taught culinary arts at Delgado Community College Culinary Arts Department for one semester leading all the Garde Manger classes, that's French for cold food preparation, ice carvings, mirror displays, etc.  Then I opened my own restaurant Boudreaux's Restaurant for a year and lost my shirt in that venture. Then became a manager at Cuco's Mexican Restaurant chain and stayed with them for 2 years. After that I worked for Club Corp and became the Food and Beverage Director for Premier Athletic Club until they closed and then transferred to Belle Terre Country Club in the same role located in LaPlace, LA until July of 2000 when I made my career change to IT at that time.

Trust me, that is the short history of my 18 year restaurant career!

Trent, glad that things are starting to get together with you now, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

JP, CSX has quite a problem that needs attention it seems. Thanks for the postings on CSX.

Jeff - This is CSX we're talking about, come on now....lol.

In all honesty, if my fire dept responded to one of these incidents and I was on the crew, I'm sure we would do the same - stay away and protect the homes. Trees, shrubs and grass will grow back in the future, but houses and lives don't come back so soon.

One more thing....

Have any of you tried mixing dirt with paint or using dirt on top of wet paint? If so, which method did you use? How were the results? What color paint did you use? If you used white paint, did the dirt change the color? Any help is grateful as I am on vacation this week and am about to break out a ‘section' of the ‘old' tabletop and experiment with various ideas, etc. I'll be heading to the LHS Friday for some scenery, flex track and roadbed (if you model in HO, did you use HO roadbed, N or none before laying track?)

On a different note - or 2 -

1) I called it ‘quits' w/ the new lady. Other than hockey, we had nothing else in common.

2) I went out and bought a new truck yesterday. I traded in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee for a 2005 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab. Very nice vehicle if I may say so myself!

3) I'll be buying a new digital camera (I don't have one yet) this week so I can take photos of the experiment and post for you all to see.

Ok, lunch time!

I'm a captain with the Sundown fire dept as well as the dept's Safety Officer. We had a derailment  in this area not too many years ago with quite hazardous conditions. When one of my fire fighters asked me how close we would be getting to it I told him to hold up his thumb and put it between himself and the scene. I told him "if you can see any of the scene on either side of your thumb, you are too close!". Until we're called to go in, we have to sit tight and wait.

Well all, I'm back again today. First off, comes this important article from the local ABC affiliate, followed by the FRA report. Enjoy!

Federal Inspectors Find 199 Violations by CSX

Syracuse (AP/WSYR-TV) - A focused inspection of CSX operations in 23 states uncovered 199 serious cases of noncompliance with federal regulations, including 13 possible violations in New York, the Federal Railroad Administration reported Tuesday.

FRA officials conducted 583 inspections over a four-day period in January and found a total of 3,518 defects or evidence of noncompliance with federal rail safety or hazardous materials regulations in the 23 states where CSX operates.

The inspection results "demonstrate that despite general improvement by CSX, the railroad is still not doing enough to make safety a top priority," said FRA Administrator Joseph Boardman.

"Indeed, our FRA inspectors identified problems in every area of the company's safety performance, including track, hazardous materials and on-track equipment," Boardman said.

A defect, per se, does not indicate an imminent hazard, said FRA spokesman Steve Kulm, However, FRA inspectors recommended that civil penalties be assessed against CSX for 199 violations.

However, those numbers are preliminary and presently being reviewed by FRA regional offices and headquarter staff for technical and legal issues before they are formally presented to CSX, Kulm said.

Historically, about 95 percent of recommended violations result in civil penalties against the offender, he said.

In New York, 60 inspections revealed 376 defects, including 13 violations. Systemwide violations cited include failure to replace defective rails and joint bars, rail cars standing on mainline tracks with no hand brake applied, failure to properly maintain records on signal testing, mechanical crews working on equipment without safety signals and tanks cars of hazardous materials found with loose closures, the report said.

The focused inspection was not related to a special track inspection effort started last week in Albany following the derailment of an 80-car freight train near Oneida on March 5.

At least five tanker cars - two carrying liquid propane, two loaded with liquid petroleum and one containing the solvent toluene - caught fire or exploded in the wreck, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based CSX operates a 22,000-mile rail network, covering 23 states, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces. The company holds primary responsibility for making sure its tracks are safe.

The FRA inspections were ordered by Boardman following a CSX derailment in East Rochester on Jan. 16 that capped a seven-week stretch in which CSX had eight freight train derailments in four states.

"This scathing report confirms our worst fears about CSX's safety record in upstate New York and across the country," said U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who is pushing for tougher penalties for fatal rail accidents and negligent railroad companies.

"It's not a coincidence or just bad luck that there has been a rash of accidents and near misses. CSX is simply not putting the energy, effort, and resources in to safety," Schumer said.

Kulm said that inspection - being done with a special computer-equipped car - is nearly complete in New York. He said those would be made public as soon as possible.

CSX officials declined comment on the report because they hadn't seen it. However, the company said it would operate rail test cars that use ultrasound technology to search for internal defects in rails on all main lines in New York state.

That additional testing is expected to take 30-45 days to complete. Also planned are: weekend visual inspections of track between Erie, Pa. and Selkirk, N.Y., in addition to the normal twice-weekly inspections conducted now; and the running of track geometry cars on all main lines between Erie and Bergen, N.J., via Selkirk, at least three times a year.

Findings from Focused Inspection on CSX Transportation

Conducted January 19-22, 2007

Following the January 16, 2007, CSX derailment in East Rochester, NewYork (and other recent CSX accidents*), Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph H. Boardman directed that a focused inspection be conducted on CSX properties in each of the 23 states where the railroad operates. The focused inspection was conducted around the clock during January 19-22, 2007, and involved a concentrated effort by federal rail safety inspectors in each of the five safety disciplines of track, operating practices, motive power & equipment, signal & train control, and hazardous materials. Approximately 20 percent of the FRA inspector force was involved in this focused inspection activity.

FRA inspectors conducted 583 inspections and found a total of 3,518 defects, or evidence of non-compliance with federal rail safety or hazardous materials regulations. A defect, per se, does not indicate an imminent hazard, but it is something the FRA inspector notifies the railroad of and it must be corrected. FRA inspectors also recommended that civil penalties be assessed against CSX for 199 violations. A violation is a serious case of non-compliance with federal regulations.

The 199 violations recommended for civil penalties are presently being reviewed by the FRA regional offices and headquarters staff for technical and legal sufficiency before being transmitted to CSX. Historically, about 95 percent of the violations that are forwarded from the regional offices satisfy FRA legal review and result in civil penalties being assessed against the offending railroad.

Morning all. I'm still sick, so bring on the waffles!
I like waffles. Cuz' they taste good.
Nothin much new, except I can't wait for my connie. I am thinking of what I should do after that though. Should it be:
A: Scenery
B: BLI Mike thru trainworld
C: Get new drumheads
D: Get another cymbal & stand.
I can't pick. Guitar Center is having they're You save at least 50%! sale, but only the drumheads I want are in the sale. The only Paiste cymbal they're selling in the discount is a Alpha series splash. I don't want a splash. I need another crash.
Sue: I like the way you're layout is going. BTW, how's the weather down there? It's high 60s and low 70s with no clouds... Had to be sick TODAY...
Oh, and a friend of mine might be dropping in at some point...

folks: I’m doing the part of scenery that I really don’t like…ballasting track.  So I need a large JR Regular to steady my hand!  Why I don’t like it is partly because the ballast keeps falling away from the slope of the track bed, and also gets washed out from the track bed when the glue is eye-droppered on.  I’m using Arizona Rock and Mineral’s N scale natural rock, which is pretty fine.  BTW, Fergie’s tip of adding black to the wetting water does work very well indeed to instantly weather the ballast.  Mine is the light colour being used, so AR&M says by SP in the Southwest.  NS’s Wabash section also has it, so they say.

Dick:

get your garden tools ready John, and hurry up with the layout, you will soon have to spend your daytime hours OUTSIDE. LOL
…not for quite a while yet (it’s raining from the northwest right now, and due to get below freezing by this evening…and then it will be museum time again…the fun just doesn’t stop does it?

Mike:

wish I was anywhere close to that far along
…but then you probably are able to run trains.  It’s been so long since I did that, with all this scenery work that I’ll have to do a major clean of the track again before I can turn a wheel.  I did test a section of track down by the wharf a week or two ago once I’d re-soldered a track connection, having shortened the stub spur to shoe horn in a road, but that’s about all.

Ryan:

Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou
…Thanks for clearing that up, I’ve never seen it in print, and couldn’t quite catch the word.

Sue: Larry’s a dab hand at those rocks too!Bow [bow] What goes on the blank area behind the tunnel mouth rocks?  Getting trees on right away is a great idea.  My ready-mades from the Alberta layout are still in storage in the attic.  That will be a big blitz eventually, but I want to cover up more blue foam before taking time to make trees.

PC:

Dick - It would not surprise me one bit if they are PINK!
…Lest we forget, the pink isn’t Fergie’s idea, the pink loco was sent him by Teffy.  Anyone heard how Bob’s doing BTW?

Sounds like CSX shares some characteristics with CN when it comes to derailments and related difficulties.

Have to wet down and glue the ballast on the doorway module.

And in today's paper is this article on the inspection....

Federal officials: CSX lax

Inspectors found 3,518 safety defects in N.Y., 22 other states.

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

By Mark Weiner

Washington bureau

Federal rail safety inspectors Tuesday admonished the Northeast's largest railroad for failing to do enough to correct safety problems and threatened civil penalties against the company.

The Federal Railroad Administration found 3,518 safety defects during a four-day inspection in January of CSX Transportation's operations in 23 states.

Of those defects, inspectors said 199 involved serious cases of noncompliance where the federal government would seek civil penalties against CSX Transportation. Thirteen of the cases are in New York state.

The inspection was begun after a derailment near Rochester in January. Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph Boardman promised to publicly release SEN.

the results of that inspection after a CSX freight train derailed and exploded in Oneida on March 12.

The Oneida explosion, which produced a fireball visible from miles away, was the latest in a string of accidents involving CSX trains in Upstate New York. Nobody was hurt in the Oneida accident.

The Oneida incident was the fifth serious accident in Upstate New York since December, according to the inspection report. In the most serious case, a CSX worker was killed Dec. 14 when he was struck and killed by a train at the DeWitt rail yard.

Boardman said Tuesday the federal inspection found a wide range of safety problems that have gone unaddressed by CSX.

"The results released today of an FRA focused inspection demonstrate that despite general improvement by CSX, the railroad is still not doing enough to make safety a top priority," Boardman said in a statement.

"Indeed, our FRA inspectors identified problems in every area of the company's safety performance, including track, hazardous materials and on-track equipment," Boardman said.

He added, "The recommendation to assess 199 safety violations against CSX will be taken seriously as the federal investigation into the railroad's safety program continues."

Steve Kulm, an FRA spokesman in Washington, D.C., said he could not disclose the locations of the 13 serious safety violations in New York until the civil penalties are assessed.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who called for congressional hearings into CSX and its safety problems after the explosion and derailment in Oneida, said the report only makes him more concerned about the railroad.

"This scathing report confirms our worst fears about CSX's safety record in Upstate New York and across the country," Schumer said.

"It is not a coincidence or just bad luck that there has been a rash of accidents and near misses," the senator said. "CSX is simply not putting the energy, effort and resources into safety. This must change immediately."

Schumer has proposed setting bigger fines for fatal accidents involving railroad companies as part of the Rail Crossing and Hazardous Materials Transport Act. The bill, which has bipartisan support, also would require the use of new safety technology.

Robert Sullivan, a CSX spokesman in Philadelphia, said the company could not comment on specifics of the federal report because it had not fully reviewed the findings. Sullivan said safety remains a top priority at CSX, and noted the company had a 24 percent reduction in train accidents last year.

The Federal Railroad Administration began its inspection of CSX properties after a derailment Jan. 16 in East Rochester sent freight trains toppling from an overpass and into the front yards of homes below.

Rep. Michael Arcuri, D-Utica, said the federal report makes it clear CSX has real problems with its freight moving through Central New York.

"I happen to be a strong believer and supporter of railroads and the railroad industry," Arcuri said Tuesday. "But we need more than just lip service from the private railroad companies. We need real safety. We can't have companies with 199 safety violations. That's just not acceptable. We have to do everything we can to improve safety on our tracks."

Schumer has suggested CSX's problems might be related to infrastructure.

Sullivan, the CSX spokesman, said the company invests about $1 billion per year to maintain and improve its track and related infrastructure. He said the company installed more than 400 miles of new rail last year. CSX has more than 1,300 miles of rail in New York state.

Well all, thought I'd share some 'lite' reading about the latest derailment here in CNY ....

Union: CSX had crew stay at wreck

Replacement engineer and conductor told to remain while others evacuated site.

Saturday, March 24, 2007

By Aaron Gifford

Staff writer

CSX ordered an engineer and conductor to remain on a burning freight train in Oneida March 12 just two hours after it derailed and caught fire, even though residents within a one-mile radius of the scene were evacuated and firefighters stayed a safe distance away, a union official said Friday.

The crew, which replaced the engineer and conductor who fled after the wreck, was told to stay in the engine should it need to be moved, said Robert Evans of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.

He said CSX managers drove the engineer and conductor from East Syracuse to the scene some time before 10 a.m. They went past police roadblocks set up to keep people away from the burning cars of propane and toluene.

"Walking up to the engine, they could feel the heat (from the fire) on their faces," Evans said, adding that the pair remained there for about eight hours. "They knew they would be fired if they didn't do it."

According to Evans, the engine was between 1,200 feet and 1,400 feet from the site of the explosion and subsequent fire. Oneida firefighters who first responded to the scene remained at least 1,500 feet away from the burning tankers, said fire Chief Don Hudson.

Robert Sullivan, CSX spokesman, estimates that the crew was dispatched about four hours after the derailment, though specific times were not available Friday. The train derailed shortly after 7 a.m.

"Everything was done with an unyielding eye for their (the crew's) safety," Sullivan said. "It's an acceptable procedure.

As soon as you can safely do it, you remove the cars that were not involved. We would not compromise the safety of our employees."

The engineer contacted the union last weekend. He asked Evans to not identify him in media reports. Both the engineer and conductor are union members.

"I was totally (shocked) when he told me," said Evans, an engineer with more than 30 years of experience.

The engineer and conductor were told by the company there was no danger of other cars exploding, according to Evans.

City firefighters, however, were not sure until about noon that day that the propane cars had properly vented and were not in danger of rupturing, which would have caused a major explosion much larger than the fire balls that followed the wreck, Hudson said.

Oneida residents who lived within a mile of the scene were evacuated after firefighters were informed that liquid propane was on the train. The fire department ultimately decided to let the fire burn itself out.

The engineer told his union representative that he was to be relieved, but nobody was sent because fire apparatus was moving into the area around the derailment, Evans said.

Evans has sent letters with his concerns to the company's vice president in charge of safety as well as to the Federal Railroad Administration, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll.

"I really question the wisdom" of having the employees on the engine while the fire raged, Evans said.

"We don't ever want to see this happen to our guys again," he said.

The Federal Railroad Administration referred comment to the National Transportation Safety Board. NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway declined comment.

Morning all!

Rainny morning here, but I'm just glad it's not snow.  Had about enough of that stuff for a while.

Trent, I'm glad that you got a few things sorted out.  I've been praying for you.  Going forward it sounds like you've got a good plan and lots of support.  I often think of how God was so good to us men when He gave us women.  I know for me, I can't even imagine what I'd be like without my wife around.  Hang in there, and remember, you've got plenty of friends, both in your life at home and here on the forum.

Well, I've got a zillion things to do today, so I'd best get at it.

Later!

Last call for coffee guys....

TRENT: At least you know the reason why now, and this should be treatable. As for doing what you are supposed to do ( annual exams, etc. ), after my bout with Prostate cancer back in '03, I tried to tell all the men to get annual check ups and to make sure that they get their PSA test done. It is painless, one silly little vile of blood from your arm that takes 1 minute. It is very treatable form of  cancer, but many men are so damn stubborn, they won't go to a doctor to get checked. I have been going for annual checkups since age 40, and I am alive today because I "did".

So Trent, stay on top of this buddy, do as the doctor says and get those tests done buddy.

SUE: You are doing a super job. Between you and John the rest of us are getting an uplift.

Time for bed, see you guys tomorrow,Zzz [zzz]Sleepy [|)]

Thanks guys for the encouragement on the rocks.  That was actually part of my first rock project.  I am hoping that it will get easier as I continue.  Larry painted the my last rock because I was having a fit of impatience.  I am sure that most of you hit a block from time to time.

This is Larry's paint job.

My latest project was painting ties, rusting rails, and I just finished ballasting a section that will lead into a tunnel.  Maybe I will get some ground goop going on Thursday.

Later, Sue

Hello everybody.........

Trent...... sorry to learn of your heart condition.  I can assure you that the good doctors now-a-days know what to do. How do I know? I'll disclose I'm a heart patient at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN.  I'll be there again early next week. Routine tests this time. I've had 3 heart surgeries there (2003, 2004, and 2005). I'll be okay.  You, too, will be okay, trent.  You too. Smile [:)]

COLBY!- Hey man thats rough but hang in there! Those things happen but I know that this new one will be better than the old one!

Hi all!

Went to the Dr. yesterday and they made me have a full work-up today. Found out why I get so winded & my weight isn't it though I could stand to loose 10 more. I have a condition on my heart that when I put a lot of strain on my heart the lower part that has the point looses blood or is restricted which causes a heart attack like situation. When I stop and rest it reverses its self and all returns to normal. They are gonna run me through the whole mess again like they did 2yrs ago. If I'd just had a reg. check up like I was supposed to then this would not be going onDunce [D)]Banged Head [banghead],Censored [censored]! Everyone has weighed in some form or another all with the "We told you to go and take care of it etc...!"

So let this be a lesson to ya.

See Cloby we all pull the old bonehead trick, even us "older" folk who SHOULD know better.

My wife is mad and keeps saying its her fault for not taking better care of me. Told her that I'm a big boy and nobody held a gun to my head making me drink all those sodas. (3-5 a day) I also told her that she does just fine. It IS hard when the kids eat chips & dip as well as sweets. Kelly is putting the whole house on a "diet" when it comes to eating healthy and she and I are on a serious diet now sa its easier for two than one.

BTW- Love those pics, Sue of the Mtns.  I'm glad to see those pics of the repaired cruise-mobile as well.

Thanks again for all the prayers and emails they do help alot!

My thoughts and prayers are with you all always.

Trent

COLBY:  That is really a bummer. I made that mistake once a long time ago, and I never did that again. Here is what works for me Colby: I open my document, it can be xcel or Word, or Power Point, the same holds true here, and I give it name and call it the Master Copy. I immediately open another document and call it the Working Copy.

I use the working copy to do my drafts. I save the work CONSTANTLY. You DO NOT, and SHOULD NOT wait until you are all done for that session to save the work. It is so easy to hit the "save" icon, so do it often. Now when you are finished with the "working copy" for the session, save it to the "Master Copy".

If you follow these steps Colby, you will never have that problem again......

The reason mom and dad are so upset? Because they figure that you were either distracted by music, or, MRR forum. How do I know this miles away? I raised FOUR (4) teenagers at the SAME time. 13, 14, 18, 19 back in the early 80's. I know every trick Colby, even the new ones from my 9 Grandkids, 3 in High School.

Have you looked in the TRASH bucket on your system to see if it can be retrieved?

*sigh* hey guys...Sigh [sigh]

I did the most boneheaded thing today. I deleted my health project that was due and now I have to start form scratch.  Now I got my parents yelling at me because of it. I'm listening to my mp3 player Headphones [{(-_-)}] to keep me calm and not lose my nerve and start crying. I hate it when this happens...

Ahhh all most supper time guys. What a beautiful day today was, hit 61 here, so I got outside and did some cleanup and some brush cutting. Tonight I will settle in to do some MRR stuff.

MIKE: Ya, for us retired people, you, me Garry, etc it's a little steep, but I'm pretty well settled in here, too much invested to move, and I like the hilly country rather than near the big city.

PC: WOW, that is really a stroke of good fortune....God works in mysterious ways.

RYAN: That young man is quite a musician isn't he??? A lot of talent for such a young man. Is the truck running better???

GARRY: Are you sure you don't want that nice Garden RR ?? All ready working? Sell your ranch and move north young man !!! LOL

I hear hear the supper bell, so we shall take leave of the Diner and see you fine folks later, Dinner [dinner]Chef [C=:-)]

Just taking a break from outside stuff.  That dreaded beautiful Spring weather is back with all the "honey do's" ............

inch.............are you close to Champaign?  We need to get back there again sometime soon.. Cooking can be fun but today I picked up lunch to bring home while in town. Anything but healthy this time.

Haven't done much on my plans to expand the layout while all the other stuff is going on.  I'm keeping my two new Atlas geeps busy when I operate though.  Nothing like new power on the layout!
