Afternoon gang: I just came up from the basement for a break. I got the braces in on the legs of the mine head frame. I also made the concrete retaining wall that supports the back of the head frame. I used 3mm PVC sheet for that. I scribed lines in it for the form boards marking. I also got the hoppers installed in the base. I guess now I have to do something for the ground. I can't assemble the thing without having a base so I may make a diarama type set up. Maybe 1x2 foot. I also have to figure out where on the layout it's going.

It's still cold and wet here. I really don't want to get out in the weather to do anything. I'd hate to get sick again. The DIL is doing great. Shes at home and that always helps.

I'm going to head back to the basement and see what else I can accomplish. I gotta make headway while the weather is losey.

I just get lucky some times. That guys layout sounds like something to see, bout how big was it??

Dick, guess I should have said, he was hoping to sell them at that price, but he was sure it would be under $4 a bag. These pellets are made in Gamaliel, KY, others round here can come from AR. or WI.

I don't know if it's man made global warming or what, but I'm ready for some warming of some kind. I've been seeing and reading on how much the sun spot activaty has increased the last few years, also the weaking of earths magnetic field.

Jerry, if you hear any thing from the guy in Flat Rock let me know. I'm sure we'll be going down past there before long, Deb's been wanting to go down to her cousins, just N of Birds.

Ryan, those pics were of the Marathon oil refinery in Robinson. I didn't get any of the ethanol plant, side of the road was to soft and was going to have to walk a piece for them and my legs just weren't up to it.

Best gets going, havn't made it to the rom yet, still trying to finish chores.

Ahhhh lunchtime in the Diner......Jeff is over there help serve the Cajon pot pie, and I see Ryan behind the counter helping himself to French Meat Pie..mmmmmm that looks good.

The temp outside has struggled to 41.1F as of 1pm, so it might hit 45F by 3pm today...ohhhh joy !!!

I was reading some articles over the weekend in the local newspaper where some people feel that what we are experiencing in Global Warming is quite normal, that we as humans have very little to do with it, and it is all a big scare tactic by scientist to get more funding for their projects.  Soooooo, the Cleveland Indians have cancelled all their games this past weekend, and todays game with the Mariners, due to  SNOW!!!  So I ask all you people in the Diner.....when is the last time that ANY Major League Baseball team has had to cancel an entire weekend of games due to snow ???  Global Warming? Naaaaah, it's just our imagination.

January 1-7 here in MA, the temps were 17.3F ABOVE normal, April 1-7, 7.6F BELOW normal including 17" of snow!

RYAN: No, sadly I haven't got back to the Train room yet, too many interruptions with other work, but it remains at the top of the list for sure. We have a big storm duw here on Thursday, so that will give me the day to get that measurement and maybe even done. I am glad that we brought in plenty of wood this past Fall, we still are burning the woodstove at night.

SUE: What are the types of Evergreen trees that you guys have growing in the NW?

Jim,

Larry says, "Thanks."

We have three MDC locos that were all RTR DCC ready.  Larry found that all three had 2 wires reversed on the circuit board that the decoder plugs into.  If you trace the wires with an OHM meter, they are easy to track down.  This does not affect any DC operation, but will fry decoders.  The NWSL kit was only to provide smoother quieter running.

Looks like my new Bachmann 3-truck Shay is slated for delivery today according to UPS tracking.

I am hoping that decoder installation will be a little less eventful.

Good morning!

I'll have a hot tea and some OJ this morning, Chloe! Thanks!

Sore throat since Saturday night and I am trying to shake it off now.

Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend!

I grilled some Rack of Lamb yesterday on my new charcoal grill. Also I made some Garlic and Herb Roasted New Potatoes, Creamed Spinach, and Sautéed Mushrooms. It was good eatin'!

Dick, how is the swing gate measurements? Hey, what's up with this cold weather in April? Been freezing three nights in a row, did you get snow up there too? Yea, I got a sore throat now, and this April cold is quite a thrill!   NOT! Fireplace was on just about all weekend.

Sue, thanks for letting me know about the stumps. Douglas Fir and Noble Fir are not found around these parts of the woods, so I might use some Eastern Hemlock that I have in the yard. Now how about some Engelmann Spruce, they have some of that your way too eh! I was Forestry major at LSU back in the early 80's and I took two dendrology classes, I used to be able to identify them all by bark, needles, and pine cones.

Garry, thoughts and prayers sent for you're out of state family member. Hope the heart condition improves for you, thoughts and prayers sent your way too! Looks like you are making a killing on those RR stocks!

James, congratulations on the move to your new house! Sorry the new train space is 1' shorter!

J.R., we too have had three nights in a row of sub-freezing temps.  Froze some of our newly planted flowers too, dag nabbit!

Luc, thoughts and prayers for Gloria, hope she is better now!

Colby, thanks for the video of your passenger trains. You might want to put that layout up on a table soon.

Paul, our thoughts and prayers go out to your daughter in law and for a quick recovery from the hospital.

Inch, thanks for sharing the photos from the ethanol plant.

Kathy, thanks!

Cheers,

Good morning everbody.

We returned late last night from Cincinnati.  It was a beautiful service yesterday.at the church there.

I just checked our stocks, and railroad stocks are surging today.  Disclosure, I own some Burlington Northern Santa Fe stock.  It's up right now over $6.00 / share to about $89.00. I've held this for 5 years and I'm pleased with it. Big Smile [:D] ......  Disclosure, Shelley made a nice return a while back when she sold her Union Pacific stock. Now, I can give her a bad time.  She should have held it longer. It's up now over $7.00 / share so far today to about $110.00.  Grumpy [|(]

Good Monday morning to all...a clear sky here this morning, but a chillt 34F especially with winds gusting to 30 mph..brrrrrrrrrr. Today I need to get that old Wheel Horse re-started and round up more brush that was cut last Fall for second burn. We only have until April 30th to burn brush outside each year, a $10 permit gives us 3 burns, which is always enough for us.

COLBY:  Where is Ray and Robbins HS in Maine? I assume it is up near Bangor or Augusta? Those prices are very good.

J.R. :  That is some layout in N Scale !!!! Too bad you couldn't get photos of his layout. That is one serious investment!!!

J.P. : Curt put it all together last night, 7 strong innings and Pap finished the Texans off in the 8th and 9th for a nice 3-2 win. I', m happy to see that Curt got it together after the KC fiasco. No hitting again though, that bothers me.

JEFF: You were up early this morning, was it your turn for KP or was it too cold down in the Bayous this morning ...LOL Wink [;)]

SUE: Time to get up on the West coast!!!!!!!! Ding , ding, ding, ding.!!

CAPE JIM: Any warmer there this morning? OK, get to work then, us retired people need your SS deposits.

MIKE: $150 a ton? That is a great price, $3 a bag !!  Who is making those Pellets? Ours are made in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, the company is called New England Pellets. We have seen some here also from a company in Montana, they come in by rail.

hey guys!

Jeff- yes I did get your package.

Jim- thanks. I am an expert at finding bargans. the hobby shop that I got my newest piece of rolling stock at. sells the stuff at lower prices than the regular price.

ex. you go to trains-r-us and find an NYC 2-6-0 for $54.95.

Now you go to Ray and Robbins (name of the hobby shop) and find the same NYC 2-6-0 the only difference is the numbering. that 2-6-0 is $24.50

Good Morning All,

Just rushing through on my way into the shop. I'll have a regular to go please Zoe. Hold the donuts please. 30F this morning but feels much colder with the wind chill. Spent Easter Sunday at my brothers in Montclair NJ and met his brother in law who is a big deal N scale guy.(obviously the other side of the family right?) Large basement layout with three pennisnulas' (penninsuli ?) and over 70 decoder equipped locos. He lived just a few blocks away so we needed to go over "just for a minute". Very impressive. He's still building the last leg of the layout, but the trackwork was superb and worked as well. He's doing the NJ, Pa border area circa late  40's early 50's with lots of steam and 1st gen diesels. Unique will be the U.S. Navy blimp base with hangers and siding and of course, blimps. I hadn't seen N steam run before but his did flawlessly and the track worked perfectly as well. If I show my layout to anyone it always seems to develop issues but Johns' worked those out (of course he's been at this one for 6 years or so but....

Inch - nice pics again - you really have an eye for composition.

I'll try to catch up on the last few pages later since jobs are calling my name out on the shop floor. CUL,J.R.

Mornin you got any brains n eggs back there Zoe, good I'll have a double order n coffee,

28 out under partly cloudy skies, Easter was ok yesterday other than cold and the kids had a good time gathering eggs. #3 son was laate geting there, some body stole his 2 day old injector pump and chemical right off an oil well, had to wait on the cops to get there and finish. Guess there's been a rash of theifs round lately, one lease even had 2 pump jacks stolen. A guy and his wife [both state cops] had their house broke into. Heard a service revolver another pistal and a couple razzers were stole there out of a gun safe. Looks like er're going to have to start locking the house, which we never do, now. Here's some more pics of some well used cars from Palastine

PC, while you bunny wasn't x rated, it could have been y rated

Dick, 30 bags is about all Mother can haul at one time. If we're geting a full pallet, we drag the car trailer down. We plan on getting a couple -3 pallets in July, the dealer in Flat Rock said he'd makes a deal at bout $150 a pallet, we go through bout 4 a winter.

Jerry, don't really know any body down in Flat Rock anymore, where'd ya see the name on the baord at, may see bout finding him.

RT, hope the test and the doc visits go well. Best take care my freind.

JIM CG, the cleaner isn't big enough for a car body, but it sure does clean a good job cleaning gears and wheels. Oh and jewerly too.

Got some time on the layout yesterday and plan on somemore after chores today [no kids]. Was going to work on it last evening after we got home, but ended up just laying around. Hope ya'll has a good day and stay warm

Evening Gang: Well today was a MRR day. I spent quite a bit of time in the basement working on the Sunday Lake Mine. I got the base trusses assembled and the hoppers put together. Bothe jobs took some time but came out all right. I also got some cleaning up and putting away done on the workbench. I'm still trying to pick up the cat hair from a couple of years ago. The 33inch N gauge wheels scale out to 18 inches in HO. They willl be just right for the mine cars for the mines. Several years ago I bought a complete display of Plastruct shapes. That's the one you see in the LHS. It has really paid for itself by me not having to run to the lhs everytime i need something that I hadn't planned on. When I'm scratch building something I don't know for sure what I may need so I can just look through the stock and I'll find what I need. One trip into Ft. Worth can cost so I save that way.

Mary Ann used her new stove to fix the turkey. It turned out pretty good. She had a bit of a time figuring out how to work the electronic controls for the oven but she got it. John's wife was released from the hospital this afternoon. I'm sure that she is glade to be home. I know that the cat will be happy.

Well I guess I'll head for bed.

Good Night All

Good Evening, Janie - How bad was the damage from my TOTP earlier? Oops [oops] That bad, huh? Well, it’s a good thing payday arrived. Ouch! Looks like I'm buying again! Oh, what the heck, I’ll have a couple of slices of that pizza and a nice glass of wine. What? You have mushroom and ground beef pizza, too? Yep, give me a couple of those, too - Yum! Dinner [dinner]

Any Easter egg hunts this morning here, needed to be done with warm mittens on! On the weather stuff, I can understand Dick or our Nova Scotian cousins getting the snow later in the season. Now, RT or Paul getting snow, that is what’s surprising to me! We haven’t really had any frost on the windshield of my car (surprisingly, with the lows in the 20’s). Guess the dew point’s not been at the ‘right’ temp (that’s fine with me).

Colby, you’ve been finding the bargains, all right - way to go! Thumbs Up [tup] From the video, I was thinking you had a modified oval on your track layout. And it’s good that you’ve saved with those bargains, since you got TOTP! With those trees, all you need is some ‘snow’ on the ground to look like Dick’s yard!

Hoople, hope your Connie comes in while you're gone, at least. As Dick said, the suspense is getting to us... and I know it's getting to you!Wink [;)]

JP, good to hear that somebody up there in the Northeast missed getting snow! I’ll be interested in your pics on the WS kits (especially the Rock Faces one), since I have three of their learning kits (Rock Faces, Landscaping, and Trees) - since I’m modeling the Southwestern U.S., not a lot of rivers (maybe a creek bed or two).

Inch - Good deal on the ultrasonic cleaner - good for getting the old remaining paint off an engine you want to repaint, and other cleaning jobs.

Jerry, good that you got a chance to visit with the kids and grandkids today.

Jeff, did you see any sleet over the weekend? I heard Baton Rouge got some, and wasn’t sure if you might’ve seen some in your neck of the woods.

Dick, sounds like Murphy made your tractor. Shock [:O]Sad [:(] At least, you got your trash and stuff burned - that can accumulate into a big pile soon enough. We did get some cold lows here the past couple of days, though I didn’t hear if they were records or not. Oh, thanks for the fill-in on the EB history. I’d heard that the eggs for Easter, came about as a sign of fertility and spring (pre-Christian, of pagan origin).

Lee, I guess the Ohio DOT figured that the snow season was over... Shock [:O] LOL Or did they run out of salt, like some cities have when the snow season runs long?

DerJohn, you do good work with some cardboard boxes - those look really top notch! (Should look even better in styrene) Was the recessed loading dock very hard to make on that one building?

Sue, love your backdrop (and the scenery in front of it, too! I like the looks of the MDC Shays (have a two-truck one myself, though I got the RTR version - don’t totally trust my skills on assembling the MDC kits). Your Shay looks great. Tell Larry I said so, too! Thumbs Up [tup]

RT, take care of yourself and fill in your cardiologist on all of what’s been happening. (No secrets, in other words) If you have to scale back on your work or change jobs, do what’ll keep you around a long while. Yeah!! [yeah]

PC, where've you been hiding? We need you back in the Diner more... Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]

Blessings, and a Happy Easter to all,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Happy Easter, All.

Larry and I have managed to get several projects done on the layout this weekend.

We did an old fashioned barn raising.

And Larry got the decoder installed on one of our MDC Shays.  He put the NWSL regearing kit in last weekend.  It has been on the shelf since we switched to DCC 1 1/2 years ago.

I am working on another scratchbuilt tunnel portal on the upper line.

Well, back to the layout.

Sue

PS. Your warehouses look great, der.

Good Easter Sunday afternoon to one and all. (Thanks PC and Dick for the reminder of what this is all about…Jesus, not rabbits!) We weren’t able to get where we wanted to be this morning because of the weather; a “White Easter” yet! Censored [censored] We didn’t get more than perhaps 3 inches here, but up country where we had to go was a quite different matter, and then there’s the wind to blow it all around. Now it’s melted off the roads, and the sun is shining, but the wind is still very boisterous.

On the mrr front, I was able to get the two Diovan boxes that were standing in for a small business building covered up to look more business like yesterday. So now it’s MicroTECH courtesy of words clipped from the weekend flyers. I’ve gone through the others just before tea, and have a number of things clipped to make other business names, but nothing that really sings to me yet. No hurry, the OXO and other boxes were that way since about May last year! Anyway, here’s MicroTECH. I’ve also taken away the trailer (It happened to be a Maine Central, BTW Colby) and you can see the recessed loading bay better.

RT: Did what you needed come through on my last email?

Sue:

It is sad that we need locks.
…we like to think we don’t need to lock here, but we do anyway, what with the news being full of home invasions and such. Also, with the frost heave in the winter, our doors spring open in the lightest breeze if we don’t have them on the dead-bolts.

OZJim: Good to see you could drop by. Thought of you yesterday as I caught the rout of Sri-Lanka by Pakistan. They sure crumbled quickly when they started to.

JR:

Der - We have people who do our taxes as they say on tv.
…with a business you pretty much have to, and can write down the cost as an expense. I’ve so far been able to keep my head above water and do my own, but it gets more complex each year. Next year Kris and I will be able to split our non-government pension income, that is I can off load some onto Kris. I hope that wrinkle doesn’t force me to an accountant, because I can’t write down that as an expense.
Line 1: fill in your income. line 2: send in the amount from line 1.
…but they still want it all written out in the forms don’t they!

JP: Yep, not all those experiments are a success first time are they! The grader and those trucks look really good. (Drool, even if they are too big) Looking forward to more of your progress shots on the WS scenery kits.

Luc: As I said in the email, we remembered Gloria and you at our service this morning. Angel [angel]

Dick: Thanks for your kind words.

scratch building from any usable materials...
…Way cheaper! The MicroTECH. cladding is card from tissue boxes mainly. I found a piece of card with gloss black on it that I used as backing for the front Oops [oops] so the windows and door have a slightly glassy look. The concrete block walls were drawn on with pencil on concrete looking card. I’ll not do that again in a hurry. I hope there is a printed or embossed plastic sheet for N Scale concrete blocks when I get around to the styrene version of this one.

Looks like time to feed Rosie-the-dog is upon us once more. So I’ll say TTFN.

Afternoon all -

  Here's the next 2 photos.

1st we have a test fit of the roadbed and track for proper length...

And here we have the plastercloth drying after application. I think I should have made it thicker on the right side, but oh well....

Anyway, about this kit - IMHO, the instructions are ok. Some parts are a little sketchy, but all in all - good.

Take care!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
