Good evening Diners! As I said to Phil yesterday, I emailed Ed. Here’s his reply. (You were right JR, I had forgotten the computer difficulties)

Stopped by (the Diner) this morning and noticed he (Phil) had been there. I still have problems from home computer. Now I can't even log in to Trains.com, so I can read but can't post. Please send my best regards to the gang and say that I will stop in as soon as I can find a guru to solve my computer problem. I just got back from a 17 day trip to Chihuahua, the main purpose was to ride the train through the Copper Canyon. You can see the thread I have started on the trip (incl some photos) over on TrainBoard at: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=87843 Thanks for thinking of me. We are off to the US next week for two weeks. Then up to Nfld again in July. Best regards Ed
…So, Ed is a ghostly presence at our revels! He sees us, but we can’t see him.

Here’s what’s been taking my time recently. That interlock tower in the photo has given me the paint colours I needed for the buildings, locos and passenger cars for the Maritime Trunk! The key was the blue in the stairs. I liked that, found a paint in the local $ Store. I like cream for RR buildings, and had a Sandstone colour on hand from the same store. The “Tide Pool blue” I’ve been using for some of the blue rock mixes does for the roof shingles, and white trim completes a beach/sky/surf motif. I scratched the tower from card, but the stairs are mostly styrene, and removable for use on the “real” styrene version (with proper lap siding etc.) I repainted the stations that are just cut down Knor gelatin boxes, or blocks of foam, with platform shelters from card and wood. That was to see how the “family” colour scheme worked. There’s one in the background of these photos, what do you think?

Garry:

It's been suspended in mid air for more than a year.
…I had a Frisbee like that once…I’ll see if I’ve still got a pick of it. It was in Campbell river, and so that’s the 80s. Thanks for the rock paint technique walk through. I go for paint mixes “all at once”, and vary the mixes. Thanks too for the wire brush and other tips.Thumbs Up [tup]

Fergie:

Will we never rid ourselves of the pink demon?
…I for one would welcome an exorcism and burial of that one. It was funny at the time, but that was a long time ago now. That’s my 2 Cents. What do you say gang?

Ryan: No worries, always trying to boost tourism in these parts!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Time to get to bed. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Evenin' Chloe - since PC's buying, I'll have a nice steak with broccoli and a baked potato, please. Dinner [dinner] Thanks, PC!

For the weather watchers, we had another Cool [8D] nice, sunny day here, with it only slightly cooler - about 67 F today. Wink [;)] Luckily, with my apartment, I don't have to mow the lawn outside. Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]

I'd be inclined to go with the sunspots theory, FWIW. That, or the warming could be due to all the urbanized areas where we've blacktopped or concreted over the grass (and which radiates heat when the sun's out).

Oh, Chloe, could I have a hot fudge sundae, too, please?

I'll leave room enough for it after the steak and fixin's. Smile [:)]

Think I'll sit here and enjoy this sundae while I watch the evening trains. Yep, life is good - and tomorrow afternoon, the weekend starts.

Oh, JR, I'll bring some beef stroganoff for the pot luck tomorrow night. Anyone heard if Ed'll be there?

Luc, hope to hear how Glo's doing when you get a chance. Angel [angel]Angel [angel]

Blessings and prayers,

Good Early Evening Gang: I just switched over to Word to write this post because I can't remember what was being discussed on the last couple of pages. Halfheimers I guess.

Fergie:" Make sure you have saved a couple of life vests for the MRR stuff. Those 251s lug like draft horses. And they don't smoke like the 244s. That should make keeping the upper works cleaner.

Alex: I'm looking forward to the video since I can now see it.

Dick: I took a look over the south fence and didn't se him. Last E-mail I got from said that he was having access problems. They were also going on another trip somewhere.

Ryan: Yes it is fast. I think I may have to install heat shields on the puter.

JimCG: The calf was all right. At the age of 2 days they stay right where momma puts them. I had to go get him out tonight also. Tonight I knew where he was.

Well no MRRing again to day. Tomorrow I'm going out to John's place to work on the crossings. He is hoping to get them finished this week end. Right now I'm going to head out and maybe lay down for a bit.

See you all later.

and for dessert there's "Derby Pie"

Also known as 'May Day' pie. That's one I really liked in my youth.

Good evening to all.....the sunstayed out all afternoon, then clouded over at 5, but tomorrow is supposed to be a great day, and the clear skies are forecasted straight through next Thursday, with temps in the 70's to 80's....I can take that.

PC: Now you understand why us older guys like Jeff, Luc, Der John,Mike, Garry, Paul, etc are so clever...we get you younger guys hooked everytime to by lunch. There is a secret way to know when you will be at the top or not. As for buying those beautiful pieces of art from that young lady, I really don't know Philip, the article was on CNN as you have already seen, you may be able to get more info from them. I got this info from Flip, so you can all thank our good friend from Florida and the FEC RR.

FERGIE: Why on earth is your ship headed into the path of the big Nor'easter???? The center may pass right over Sable Island or very close to it. How much "roll" can your ship take before capsizing, 38 degrees? Keep your life vest on and your survival suit.

MIKE: I feel the same way. Everybody knows we are experiencing Global Climate Change (warming in this case), no one disagrees with that , but the "cause/s" of this change is what is up for argument. After watching both Al Gore's movie, and the BBC movie, I favor the change being caused by the Sun storms. And if people stop for a minute and just look at one event in the past...the Viking colony on an Island that they called "GREENLAND". This was in the 7th and 8th century, and the population on earth was very small compared to todays earth population, and there certainly was no big industries, cars, planes etc poluting the air and causing huge amounts of CO2 to enter the atmosphere due to those reasons. Greenland was very GREEN, no snow, no glaciers, and by the way, this means that the polar region must have been very void of ice, and you will note that Polar Bears did not go extinct without the ice pack, and neither did the Penquins disappear from Antartica. And, as you have said so correctly, this does not mean that we should not cleanup OUR act with polution and dependency on foreign oil. Clean air is what we try to breathe at "lower" levels of the atmosphere.

GARRY: Yup, bring back the Steam engines!!!!!!!!!! I want to see those big Berkshires with a long drag on the old B&A now CSX main line hauling freight up over the Berkshire Hills of Western MA. What I wouldn't give to see that.

WCfan: We have no green grass yet here in MA, but when the sun came out today after that big 5 day Nor'easter, and all that rain, the grass literally turned green before my eyes this afternoon as I worked outside. I think the grass grew an inch already.

SUE: How far do you have to go to your LHS? I know there is a real good one in Vancouver.

RYAN: That is not very high altitude, not enough to account for the very low Rh. I am really surprised to see the Rh get that low in North Carolina only 50+ miles from the Atlantic, and in mid April. I could see it in winter months.

Hello everyone...

Jerry ....   That must have been a favorite dish for Danial Boone with squirrel or rabbit. I've not had any of that.

Inch .... I'm not familiar with the tavern on Paducah. Perhaps, I'll find out.

Ryan....(and others sho may be interested)....  and for dessert there's "Derby Pie"... Several places use the name, but they should not do so because it's a registered trade mark of Kern's Kitchen.  I've not had the authentic, but all the copy cats I've had have been sweet and terrific. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derby_pie

While on the topic of Kenetucky food,  I must mention Patti's Settlement in Grand Rivers (about 20 miles east-south-east of Paducah).  I had no idea a pork chop could taste as good as theirs. It's a 2" thick chop that has their own season blend sprinkled on before it goes in the oven. When served they have added their own special sauce.  Desserts there are out of this world.  In particular, they have a coconut cream pie with the tcream topping being about 8" thick. It's amazing.

Now, I'm making myself hungry! !!

Bye.

Ah but this is where we make the mistake. It's not global warming it's Global Climate Change. Though the Arctic is warming at an alarming rate. I dare say there will be little in the way of modelling tonight as the waves are peaking at 20 feet +. Hudson is a good ship but rolls a bit.

Oh....oh......any of those ribs left for me!!!!!!!

Garry, thanks for the link to the BURGOO, I might have to try that the next time we are in Kentucky.....

Dick, global warming has left the building.... at least in our neck of the woods. Seems like winter is here to stay for a long time, still gets into the upper 30's at night here. Our elevation in Wake Forest is around 390 Ft. above sea level. Not the mountains, but it is the Piedmont.

And the child prodigy is amazing, does she sell that artwork?

Hey,

Colby's visiting me, and we made a short video, which we're trying to upload to the I won't say what computer. Now keep in mind, in the movie I'm just getting used to the controller Jeff gave me, Whistling [:-^]        and that no one was hurt by us "making" the video...................         Oh well, my stupid computer won't let us upload anything, so Colby's going to upload the clip at his house and post it.

Hello ........

Ryan asks about BURGOO .... here's what it is:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgoo  Around here, the meat is usually shredded pork and includes corn and green beans as vegatables. Locals here have good recipes for it. Dinner [dinner]

Dick............actually, global warming is the results from lack of steam locomotive smoke blocking sun rays. Bring back steam locomotives and you'll see a difference. Wink [;)]  Enjoy the SUN! Cool [8D]

Jeff's correct about Athearn engines being able to run quietly.  Proper maintenance is all that's needed. Of course, I don't operate at full throttle.

PC: Yes, you are so correct and I totally agree with your statements on God and appreciation. You have to be the nicest Telephone Co.person in the country!!!!

DER JOHN: Sable Island is about 250 miles off the east coast of NS, that places FERGIE in some real nasty weather and high seas....I sure hope that ship is BIG !!! and STRONG.

RYAN: WOW, I am surprised to see that you have such dry air that far south......is it mountainous where you live? What is your elevation above sea level, that might explain the dry air at times.

FOR EVERYONE:   Guys and gals, you have to see this amassing young girl, what talent, PC, et al, you will indeed be moved by this.

No sun here either.  Just lots of rain and gray clouds.  But the thing is, thats what God made for today, so therefore, it's beautiful!  I dare say it's even perfect!  See, we sometimes forget to thank Him for the simple things we take for granted, like air, and light.  I try to remember to thank Him for those things from time to time.  This would, after all, be a very hard (and short) life without them!

Sorry, I didn't mean to get all philosophical on you!

Good morning everyone...the jaw feels a little better today after the 2 1/2 hour marathon at the Dentist yesterday. I found out something interesting while talking to the dentist.......in the old days of silver fillings, it was necessary to keep the silver filling in place mechanically by undercutting a ridge in the tooth to sort of lock the silver filling in place. Today they use some sort of resin filling that is made up of porcellin powder, that adheres to the tooth surface ( like glue) so no undercutting is necessary. That means that the dentis does not have drill as much tooth material away to place a filling. Also, the new fillings, unlike silver, a metal, has MUCH better heat/cold characteristics than silver, so it does not weaken over time due to expansion and contraction with heat and cold.

GLOBAL WARMING:  I saw a very interesting video yesterday, produced by the BBC, that gave the first opposing view of the "cause" of global warming. It contained some very interesting findings and more important, historical data, that shows that the "Sun" is the cause of this global warming event, in particular, sun spot activity ( storms on the surface of the sun ).I don't want to try to give all the info here, so here is the website:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4499562022478442170&q=global+warming+swindle&hl=en

FERGIE: Sable Island? About 200 miles off the NS coast? You are right in the path of the big storm, although it is pulling slowly away to the NE. The seas must be 20-30 feet !!!!!

MIKE: You are correct when you say you don't get anything done with the small grandkids there, they are a handfull for sure.

INDY PHIL: Can you get some pics of those Methanol tank trains headed east? They run this way on CSX main line to RI, but I have not been able to see them yet.

PC: No sun here yet, although a few peeks this morning as this big storm is finally pulling away. Tomorrow is supposed to be full sun , and 80 degrees by Monday!!!

J.R. : Cheer up J.R., the sun is actually peeking out through the clouds here, and is moving your way .

HOOPLE: Maybe it would have been easier to buy that loco on the west coast, you would have had it a month ago!!

PAUL: Any signs of ED down there? Have you looked over the south fence into Mexico?

J.P. Another great pitching performance from Wakefield last night, long ball helped too.

LUC: How is Glo doing, prayers continue for her to recover and be back home with family again.

Mornin' folks!

What you all know good? Where yat?

Dick, I have two gauges and both verify the low %rH. As a matter of fact, yesterday they both were registering around 20%, now the evenings and nights the rH % will go into the 50-70% and then once the dew evaporates in the morning it drops again. Oh, and I have a similar clock/temp/rH gauge in the train room too, similar readings there too. It is dry here! Almost like dessert conditions in terms of rH%.

Good luck with the dentist!

J.R. sorry to hear about the water intrusions, but hope all is on the dry out now!

Garry, okay, what is burgoo?

Paul, congratulations on the broadband! Now you are flying eh!!!

Der John, I was just kidding, the view is spectacular though. We are not planning any long or extended trips this year, just a few short weekend jaunts to the Smoky Mountains and then to the South Carolina coast. LOL, yea, sunrise, what's that!!!

Jim, a party in the Diner on Friday night? Let's make it a pot luck thing, and I'll bring dessert.....what time do we get underway?

Phil, glad to hear that Runt is still a great companion, dogs are a mans best friend indeed! And 3:21 AM is kind a quiet anywhere you go!

Mike, we were expecting rain too, but might just get a few sprinkles this afternoon. Guess I will have to water the flower plants if it doesn't rain again soon.

RT, have a safe trip and say hello to everyone!

Catch you all later,

Ryan

Good morning and top 'o' the day to all of ye. Had a pleasant visit from a gentleman by the name of Duke Yerman yesterday and showed him what I'm doing on my layout and also showed him just how quiet Athearn BB locos can be. I think they surprised him.

Morning Guys.

I'll be over at RR dude's house today working on his layout and getting some scence into him, cause right now he does not have a table ready for his new layout.

And thanks to all of you who liked the pics and movies.

Well we're enroute to south of Sable Is and should be there by this evening. Gales out of the NE are still blowing but should subside by saturday. It's been blowing NE gales for the last week so we are still rolling but it's on our tail so it's not too bad. Good thing is I haven't missed a meal yet, well maybe not so good as it was Shrimp and Haddock for lunch and Striploin for supper. Grub is good here.

Got the second tender carved out for speaker installation and the Oil hatch is gone and a well made for the coal. So work is doable even with this puppy rolling upto 15 degrees though it makes sleeping and eating a challenge at times.

Fergie: Heading for the Grand Banks with this Nor’ Easter does sound lumpy! At any rate in the Hudson you won’t be rescuing crews stuck in the pack ice off Fogo. Glad the loco survived its dive.

Funny you should mention that! A bunch of us saw that on the TV last night and shook our heads.  We've been up there before helping them as this is a yearly occurance... Please don't get me wrong it is a very dangerous situation thes guys get themselves into but it happens every year. Yes you heard me right the ice packs into the NE coast and someone always gets nipped and stuck including the Icebreakers. I've been stopped on the west coast of Newfoundland for a couple of days and can't move until the wind lets up to relieve the pressure.

Philnrunt: I remember (because I choose to) several of us warning you of the Honey do list! But NOooo  you choice not to listen or pay head, Next round is on you Pls and tanks.

Trent: Pink? Will we never rid ourselves of the pink demon? probabl not but I will say this no pink in my paint box!

RT: You weren't napping, no sir, you was hibernating if I recall correcetly and it took us several weeks to find your shadow.

Dick: Next trip is the current analysis as we will be carrying one of the Oceans leading experts so it will be interesting though I don't fancy a trip to the Flemish cap this time of year.

Phil: Sorry old man we have pics of you and Flo so you're  BUSTED!! Big Smile [:D]

Anyway I must be off as lunch is just around the corner

Good morning everybody.......

How about a carmel pecan breakfast roll and coffee this time.... (hurry before Ryan gets here and its all of them).....    thanks....

From DER   "Garry: Your strata technique reminds me of the stacked ceiling tile method, but more rock-like with the plaster. Do you score in any lines, or leave it as is? Speaking of scores, what's the score in that volleyball game up to now? " ....... Der ...  the v.b. game has yet to score a point because the ball has yet to cross over the net.  It's been suspended in mid air for more than a year.

Continueing with Der... Regarding the strata technique, broken plaster looks better than broken ceiling tile because the broken edges have rock-like texture. The surfaces are porous and colors will penatrate into the plaster. For color (that's "colour" in Canadianese), I use watered down acrylic paints.  The method for my colors is as follows. First, brush on a very thin layers of yellow paint while spraying frequently with detergent water. It looks very funny at this point, but no worries. Wait a day for it to dry. Then do the same with brown color (raw siena or whatever you want). Wait a day. Do the same with light gray. Wait a day. Do the same with thinned black paint.  Wait a day.  ... If any of the "rocks" don't look right, brush horizontally with small wire brush to remove most of paint, and repaint with same series of steps. ...Brush on thinned white glue and sprinkle on some woodland scenics stuff as needed. .......  "plant" trees and shrubs as needed. .........add fencing if you want..   works for me.  .... Practice first on scrap plaster pieces, and experiment with different colors to match rocks you are modeling.  Also, I use old grated chees containers for shakers for scenery stuff.
