Busy day today, this is the first time I have sat at the PC. Spreading the last of the mulch, putting the tiller back together after the repair job, planting the flowers that the CFO bought, church at 4pm, Fireman's spagetti supper fuind raiser...the 15month old grandson fell asleep in my arms for most of the Mass, boy, is he getting heavy to hold for 30 minutes !!
Now I would like to wish all the Mothers a very Happy Mothers Day......may you all have a great day and be treated with the love and respect that you deserve.
MIKE: When you consider the 20 years that I received from this tiller, $386 is not that bad at all. Tomorrow I should be able to get the garden tilled.
FERGIE: We have a lot of glass in our added - on Family room which is an "L" off the main ranch house extending due West, with no windows facing North. There are three Velux sky lights that open manually ( long pole opener ) It is surprising how well the room heats in the daytime with sunlight. We use blinds for shades. The Pellet stove is in that room, and I have never had to turn that zone ON for heat, but we do allow the Pellet stove to run 24 hours a day, low heat at night, and it does a great job. We are going to go to a small wood burning stove, Vermont Castings, mostly because I have my own supply of wood, and the cost of Pellets just keep rising each season, now $4.45 a 40# bag. I used 110 bags this season, and Nov, Dec, and most of Jan were warmer than normal.
DER JOHN: You are the master of materials when it comes to landscaping!!! Now you are using your grandaughters hair for fencing wire.......now that has to be a first for MRR magazine, I think you should send that idea in John!!!
BOBK: You certainly had a day (and night) to remember, or should I say "forget"!!! You did a great job in staying cool tempered Bob, most people would be screaming at AAA for being so lax with customers. I see that you and Michael have made contact here in the Diner, it is good for both of you. And as you have seen already, the Diner has a great bunch of people, who share their feelings and support for each other like one big extended family.
Tomorrow, we head over to my daughter's house and the guys and older boys prepare breakfast for the ladies and Mother's of the family.
Prayers to all you my friends tonight......( except Yankee fans..........just kidding )
Tonight I'll hve another one of those gargantutan(sp?) sand wiches with a strawberry milk shake. Any one want the other half?
As of this afternoon my track is permanently affixed to the extruded styrofoam table top! So I am now ready to lay down the scenery. I have decided to have my railroad (loosely based off santa fe) in a green place with a salt mine.
p.s. that is VERY loosely.
Evening Gang: Up north you guys do HO or N in the winter because the weather is cold outside. Then in the summer you do the outdoor thing when the weather is worm. Down here we should reverse that because the basement is cool in the summer and the temperature outside is HOT. I should have worked on the HO today. We worked on the track over at my friends all day. I gave up around 3:30. The temp was in the 90s and the humidity was up there also. It really took the stuffings out of me. We got alot done and we also found out that a bunch of guys are coming Monday to run there stuff. They are from out of state on there way to a meet further south. Surprise, surprise. Anyway they will get the last done tomorrow. I won't be there since I'm taking Mary Ann out for a lunchen. We did run the name passenger train all the way out and back so I guess things are in pretty good shape.
Colby: The Fergie thing is in reference to our dear friend soldering himself while doing some wireing under the layout. I just hope that the gang here doesn't find out about some of my goofs since they can be ruthless. Who Me?
Der: That's a real neat fence there. I'd never think of using hair for the wire.
By the way I've got a new E-mail address. thebeverungs@gmail.com.
I'm going to head out since I have some printing to get done.
Good Night All

Greeting to all the regulars here in the Diner. I just wanted to drop in and say that I've been following Michael's situation, and you guys here have obviously been giving him some wonderful counsel. On behalf of all the other forum contributors who wish they could do more than just post to a thread, please accept my heartfelt thanks. You've all earned an extra star in your crowns.

Hello everyone....
Perhaps some cookies and decaf will hit the spot tonight.
I had a lot of non-mrr stuff to do today, but did get into the train room this evening. I'm still working on passenger cars now. I'm trying to make my own resin castings for some of the details. In particular, I am trying to add more skirts to CB&Q stainless steel cars to be consistant with the prototype. I'm hoping to make some with resin.
Earlier today I posted a couple of kit bashed cars on week end photo fun.
Bobk... glad those words helped. Do you live near Plymouth, Mass.?
Best wishes to all!

It was a phase... some lie body piercing while others like tattoos. I prefered screaming in agony and turning the air blue around me!
Colby: These are the things to remember about soldering
1. variable power soldering iron is an asset but not a must, minimum 25 watts 40 is better. slow heat will melt things in adjacent area. high heat is localised. use alligator clips to dispate heat if required.
2. keep the tip clean
3. always use flux even with resin cored solder
4. I use lead/cadmium free solder regardless always insure good ventilation
5. Make sure work is clean and dirt/paint/oil free
6. wear glasses if soldering over head (I use a face shield)
7. ALWAYS PICK UP SOLDERING IRON BY THE RUBBER/PLASTIC END!
8. Never dangle live iron over table edge and then go looking for lost pieces under table on hands and knees with a carpenter butt for the whole world to see. Soldering Irons are alive!!!
If you decide not to heed the last two insure youngsters are not within hearing range!

A GOOD MOTHERS DAY to all the moms
I'll have a some- coffee Janie, another cool morning here. The furnace kick on and its set on 60. Got all the baseball done for a few days anyway, but got another busy day running round to see our moms along with chores here. Both our moms are in their 70's and are in good health
DER,,, like the fence, looks great. I've got 3 blond haired grand daughters, may have to raid their brushes. I use straight pins for steel post on mine and wood tooth picks for corner and gatepost in HO.
RT,,, you keep going and you might get your layout going yet. Just a thought,, wasn't you going to fix that floor bout a year ago???
DICK,, 20 years on any piece of equipment is great. I'd almost bet you couldn't get that out of a new now days. I don't know how old our tiller is, we've had it a lot of years and bought it used. The only major repair was a new carb, after it caught fire.

That was a nice post from Mononguy. to the diner! Hey Mononguy, stick around and have some coffee in the diner.
Fergie, that was a good explanation of soldering for Colby ! One more thing is how to clean the soldering tip. Colby, cleaning the tip is really easy. While the iron is hot, simply pull the tip through a cold, wet rag. That's my hot tip of the day. Fergie if you get solder on yourself, you'd better not be using super glue and spilling it on yourself, too!
Okay now, where's the Tim Horton's coffee? Hmmmmmmmm.... well it's Starbucks again for me.
Jeff, food looks good. Do you eat that much? If so, Ryan has some competition.

Mornin' All!
Slow to get movin' this mornin'! Just can't seem to get it in gear.
Oh, Mornin' Zoe! I'll just have the breakfast of champions this morning. No, no, not that nasty stuff in the orange box. The REAL breakfast of champions! .......now we're talkin'!
Weather guesser says it should be pretty nice today.
TODAY: An area of high pressure to our northeast, will pump in cool air for Mother's Day. Highs will struggle to hit 70 in northern parts of the viewing area, while central and southern parts of the state will get closer to the mid 70's.
Well, I went and visited the mom's yesterday and my teaching gig got rescheduled, so I'm free to enjoy the day with the wife today. That should make it a nice day!
Whats up with you all?

Good morning all. I'm pasting this from the Mother's Day post.
No way! could I forget this one.
Happy Mother's Day to all those woman who will put up with us and our trains.
I really thought that this, the first Mother's Day without my wife, April, would be real tough.
Not so, I did wake up at the usual 5:30 and made my coffee. Yes it was another day without her, but I felt good. Memories of her and past days put a smile on my face. My youngest daughter came in late last night from Nashua, NH from the drum and bugle corps. Usually they practice all weekend, but not for mother's day. I saw her this morning sleeping on the couch and my God she looked just like her mother. Brought a tear to my eye and went over and gave her a kiss on her forhead. My oldest daughter is in S.Carolina for a NASCAR race and my son just left to work on his friend's Mustang race car. I guess I'll just have to figure something to do with my youngest, named April also, today. Make it a father daughter one.
I do hope that these better days are a trend and will continue. Michael and I are exchanging emails, I do hope that the near future can start to get better for him and his wife. Mother's day must be real devastating for his wife as for him. You guys here have really surprised me. You have added to my comfort over these past dreadful weeks and I need to thank you again. Now we need to work on Michael.
Dick: Yes that was quite the experience, still not upset at the incompetance, even though the last ramp truck took out the lower control arm. They wouldn't listen to me, heck I'm only a carpenter what do I know. Tomorrow I'm not just calling AAA, I'll be asking for a head superviser at the Headquarters in Providence.
GARRY: I'm just 15 minutes south of Boston, can actually look at the Boston skyline across Quincy bay from the beach down the street. Plymouth is 5 towns down the coast about a 40 minute ride.(no Cape Cod traffic of coarse)
cheese4432: Keep the sandwich for later, even though it is lunch time, I think I'm hungry for some of the ham steak and eggs that Jeff has.
Fergie: All good soldering tips, and speaking of tips, It's good to know what end of the iron you're grabbing.
inch53 and Phillip: I guess I'll be getting your weather here shortly in Massachusetts. Can feel it cooling off even though it's still sunny.
DER: So was that you hiding under the benchwork, you must have been blocking that kitchen sink I couldn't find.
RT: I guess theres always a way to finally get the job done, one way or the other. I never procrastinate either.
Well guys, no sense wasting the day, I'll see if my daughter is up for some yard work and then maybe lunch.

Happy Mother's Day to Sue (and all the CFO's) today. Hey, they do their best to try to raise us up right! Not their fault some of us turned out as we did...(Now who does he mean by that?)

Colby - I was 'non-commenting' about the comments on Fergie's soldering skills. (Not that mine are any better, mind you...) And besides, I see Fergie gave you all his finer points of soldering (especially #'s 7 & 8)... Oh, and one detail on Garry's tip with the wet dishrag - lay it down (like on a piece of wood) when you do that, don't be holding the wet cloth...
RT - Elvis impersonation? Is the video on YouTube.Com yet? And Tiny Tim impersonation? C'mon Fergie, give us the link to it.
DerJohn, I think you get the award for recycling the most materials for your layout! That looks great - another advantage of iNvisible scale: no one can tell what it looks like without their magnifying glasses, anyway! Now an enterprising MRR'er with an Afghan hound could really go to town on fences...

Jerry - only one comment on your story... OUCH!!!
I had a bit of a problem with the laptop yesterday - think there may be a hardware problem (but heck, it's only six years old...). But today, after re-seating the CPU board on the main logic board and resetting one button on the back, it appears to be working all right. So I'll try working with it this afternoon some. (I'm writing this using the desktop PowerMac for now)
Enjoy your afternoons, folks. See you later today maybe.
Chloe, what's on the menu for tonight? Got to wait and see, huh? Okay.
Blessings on your Mother's Day,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Looks like a nice day here - 79 F currently (26 C), and supposed to go up another couple of degrees only. So should be a beautiful day outside.
Hello everyone.
It's a good day for root beer float. (A black cow as my grand dad used to call it). One of those would be really good.
Jeff, glad your cholestoral is so great. Mine has been good, too. However, with that and perfect arteries, I still got heart failure. Doctors never did determine why.
Bob k. I was certainly hoping the day would not be too tough on you. Glad you've got keds to share your life with. Keep us posted. I was asking about Plymouth, because Shelley and I stopped there while visiting Mass a couple of years ago.
Have a nice rest of the day everybody!
Good Evening All,
Just another quick run through and a pick of the pick or the Mothers Day of Invention (for when you don't have a 200 ton cap. crane.
Cheers, J.R.
Hi Gang!
Hope everyone is doing good this fine day. Happy Mother's Day to all the CFO's and Sue too! Sorry I have been absent for the last few weeks, but between work, my trip to New Orleans, and women (sorry ladies) I have not had much time to myself.
Speaking of New Orleans, nice place, but I cound not live there. Some of you may know why, and some may not. I am not going to say why, other than I will only go there for a vacation or if I had to go w/ my unit for work reasons. I do have some railfanning photos from there and around here in Syracuse that I took back on Friday. Once I get them uploaded to photobucket, I'll post them for all to enjoy.
On the 'women' front, I think I am in way over my head now. I know of one who has a interest in me, but the problem is do I really want to make one of my friends a enemy? Seems he's got alot of interst in her, himself, but she's not all that interested in him and he's told me to stay away from her even though she has told him that 'if in 5 yrs we are still single, then we will date and go from there.' Oh well, life goes on..... Well all, while I sit here chatting with her, I guess we'll (as in her and I) will have to make a decision. I just hope it will be the right one. I'll let you all know.
Take care...

I'll be looking forward to the pictures, John. I guess no comment from me on some of the otherstuff.
JR..... A real FA unit! wow. I've been to the KY Ry museum a few times but it's too far (3 hours) from here to consider any active role. They have a few neat old locos including an L&N 4-6-2, a C&O 2-8-4, and a Monon BL2. I was told recently that they will be (or are) restoring an L&N E6 EMD passenger diesel for display (non-operating). Grandkids were with me as we passed by some rusted hulks that may or may not be restore and said: "Grandpa has to fix those trains." Cute. We rode their train between New Haven, KY and Boston, KY. (Sounds like eastern location but its in KY.)

just their rs3's but that's not HO scale so I don't lie that much but I do like strong pullers(who doesn't?)
Jim,
The scenery wasn't done by Dave Frary. I used some of his techniques from his MR Scenery books.
Dave Frary did have a hand in some of it Model Railroad Scenery (I have his singed copy of the 3rd edition), but no, he's not a member. I wish! The member that did the city scene, never did scenery before. You're looking at his first attempt. Not bad for a beginner, Ay. The member, John, is good at anything he does. These are the spots where some of his techniques were used:
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I would love for him to do a hands on clinic at the club.
There is one industrial switching area that I don't have pics of at this time. This spot was designed and started years ago. Two members have been working on it and it is near completion. It is of the same caliber as the E. Middleton city scene done by John.
I will post some pics as soon as I have them. Quite impressive.
Good Evening Sports Fans,
Well, we're back from our trip north of the Rio Bravo. Things went well, no major problems (the best kind of trip). Not much railfanning or model railroading. I did get to talk to Paul B on the phone, and stopped in and saw Trent at the train shop in San Antonio. I also got to stop by and see the SAMRA (San Antonio Model Railroad Assoc) layout. That's one impressive layout (although it is Horribly Oversized), even if scenery is only about 20% complete. I didn't buy much stuff this trip, mainly because with the slow progress on the layout my "needs" list is practically nonexistent.
I'm way behind in reading posts and won't catch up on all that has been said, but I did notice posts from Bob K. (bogp40) and Mike (8500HPGasTurbine). There's not much I can add to what the other guys have already said much better, just that I'm sorry for your loss and welcome to The Coffee Shop.
On the orange grove front, this season's harvest is pretty well wound up. So the bad news is that there won't be much in the way of fresh fruit or juice shipped to The Coffee Shop until the fall. The good news is that "Jugo S.A. de C.V." (that's "Juice Inc." for you Gringos), my biggest on-line industry, has lots of o.j. concentrate available, so the FCVN will continue to ship north during the summer months. The jury is still out on what this fall's crop will look like. Flowering is over and fruit has set, but lots of it is still too small to tell if we'll have a lot of fruit or not. Best guess at this time looks like a decent year, but nothing to write home about. Stay tuned.
Mother's Day down here south of the border was last Thursday. Here it is always May 10th, instead of the second Sunday in May. My mother has been gone a long time, but we managed to get back from our trip in time so that Fran could be here with her Mom for that day.
So today I was free to watch (on the computer only, so not really ‘watching') the Red Sox make a great comeback, scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Baltimore 6-5. I know it's still early in the season, but "How ‘bout them Boston RedSox!".
We should be here at home for about 7 weeks before the next major trip is planned. Maybe I'll even get to running some trains (if I can get the rails cleaned off) or {{gasp}} work on some scenery.
Hasta mañana,
Ed
Evening Gang: I took Mary Ann to the lunchen at Clark Garden. We both had a really good time. We got there a little early so walked around abit. The food was really good. Nothing heavy just salad, fruit salid, snadwiches on rolls and ice tea. They held the lunch in there big tent that is used for weddings and such, also for the trainshow in the spring. It seemed strange to be in there and no trains. After lunch we strolled around for a couple of hours and took the secnic route home, back roads all the way. All in all a great day with my lady.
When we got back I lighted in my easy chair and read for the rest of the afternoon. I gave Dasiy the Dog a bath and she seemed to like it.
Ed: Good to see you in the dinner. I'll be looking forward to seeing you here more often. Say Hi to Fran.
Since it's late I'll say Good Night
