Posted by Mark R. on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 11:14 PM

There is a current ad on ebay for a resin cast caboose. There is no picture. The ad simply states ....

NO PIX.LOOK,YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO HAVE USE YOUR IMAGINATIONS IF YOU WANT TO BE THE NEXT MALCOLM FURLOW.OFCOURSE THE CABOOSE IS COMPLETE.WHY WOULD I SELL SOMTHING THATS NOT COMPLETE? AND AS FAR AS HURTING THE SALE.I DON'T CARE IF YOU BUY IT OR NOT.I THOUGHT THERE MIGHT BE A DEDACATED D&H MODELER OUT THERE THAT WOULD LIKE TO OWN A NICE CABOOSE.THERS NOTHING ON EBAY THAT SAYS I HAVE TO POST PICTURES ANYWAY.HECK.GET ON THE INTERNET AND DO A LITTLE RESEARCH AT ONE OF THE RAILROAD PICTURE GALLERY SITES.THATS ALL I GOT TO SAY ABOUT THIS

With an attitude like that, there's a good chance he'd probably rip you off anyway. The car may not even exist at all.

This wouldn't be the same guy who listed the common Athearn diesel engine for a fortune, would it?  If I recall right, his answers to questions were very similar.

Mark, this guy certainly exemplifies the personification of "stupidity".

Smart move on your part.  No matter how desireable the item is.......if I don't see a picture, I'm not bidding.....period.   As has been stated so many times, ebay is the world's biggest flea market and there are sellers with an incredible variety of attitudes including those mentally handicapped in the common sense and courtesy departments.

What this shows is if you have any doubt about the accuracy of the item, it is not a bad idea to contact the seller. Much can be learned from the response. I was going to ask for a link but I see Antonio already did.

Sometimes PIC don't tell the tail either. I bought a lot of cars and steam engine off E-bay. I was mainly after a cover hopper, crane, and 62' tanker. The steam engine was a plus.  Seller said he was sending a long some HO train stuff parts as well. What he did not say was the parts where the parts that had been broken off the engine and other cars. He all so siad they where in good shape for there age, I guess a broken steam engine that is 30 years old is still in good shape if it will not run?

I am not to PO about it, what I was after came in good shape and running now. But sure would have liked that steam engine to have run.

Not trying to take sides here, but I think it would only be fair if you posted the content of your letter to the seller as well as the auction number.  If you are going to go out of your way to publicly flog a seller on eBay, then you really need to put all the facts on the table.

I've exchanged a couple "offline" e-mails with the seller over this - his last response contains a classic line responding to the fact I have a couple pics of the real caboose ....

.... AND IF YOU HAVE AS MANY PICS OF THIS CABOOSE AS YOU SAY YOU DO THEN I DON'T HAVE TO POST ANY ON EBAY,DO I.

Obviously this person has no concept on how to sell his stuff for maximum profit !!!

I didn't know if we could post links to auctions, so here it is ....

Check out the bottom of his ad - my letter in full is posted for all to see.

Now, the personal e-mails I've received, they're just not nice - bordering on personal attacks which I thought was totally uncalled for.

wow... how does he expect to sell anything with an attitude like that?  I mean... the questions are/were valid (and probably a really good idea b/c of the lack of pics...).. but his responses were completely out of line.

There's a bid on it...  Now, which one of you is it?Big Smile [:D]

Notice that although his feedback is 100% positive, he has only 2 feedbacks.  Always check the feedback rating before bidding.

Dan might be right.  Except for the price, he does sound strikingly similar to the rantings of our Athearn entrepreneur.  (Didn't he get booted off of eBay and then post here on the forum that he had all of our names?)  $10 for shipping one caboose?  Hmmm...Could be him?

Count me among the group who find tales of utter stupidity hilarious!

I don't bid anything if there's no picture, or the picture looks like crap. There are too many sellers who take things seriously and who will show me clearly what I'm bidding on.

Yeah -- TWO feedbacks (on PURCHASES); NO PREVIOUS SALES. He's been on Ebay for a whole month. Has the world's worst attitude. Can't even BORROW a camera so he can post a picture.
Does this listing have "STAY AWAY" written all over it?

I agree.  As ubiquitous as digital cameras are now, I would think that the seller would at least know someone who could let him borrow one for that purpose.  When someone takes the time and effort to post good pictures of what they are selling, that tells me something about both the item AND the seller.  Even so, you still have to be careful.

A word of advice to any sellers reading this:
If you aren't a real whiz at taking pictures, either find a friend who is or take a 1-night seminar on general photography.  Most digital cameras in automatic mode will do it all for you anyhow, but you will learn about framing your shot and what makes for a good picture.

And your efforts will pay off in the long run with larger bids.  If the pictures are out of focus or of poor quality, that makes me less likely to bid on that item.  (And I don't think I'm alone on this...)

Just write this ebay auction off as a laughable joke and move on.

IMHO, This is a helpful thread

It's good to know about auctions like these.  Too many stories of model railroaders being hoodwinked on ebay auctions; especially newbies.  But, even seasoned modelers that are relatively new to ebay can be "shang-hied"Black Eye [B)] if good sense and caution isn't exercised.

(Yes, I once paid to much for an Athearn BB FP45.  Afterwards I quickly became educated!Wink [;)])

definently, You have to know what you can get it for elsewhere and bid accordingly.  You see stuff going for muchmore thatn you can get it elsewhere.  You can get good deals though.  I just bought a Atlas GE DASH 8-40CW for $80.

I am tired of ebay.

There are just too many problem sales on ebay both sellers and buyers.

We can look, point fingers and laugh at some of the things that goes on in that tawdry ebay auction.

Who is to say that we been down this road before with certain other ebay sales previously discussed extensively on these forums.

I personally am in the market for a very specific caboose and am planning to get it in RTR brass because it is simply not availible in Plastic. This seller's atttitude as defined in both the sale itself and the letter presented here shows complete lack of humanity and respect.

That is not what the hobby is about folks. I would like to rant further but we already are "Up to here" in the garbage from these problem ebay sales and dont need any more.

Love ebay, got a six pack of wood and metal old cars, pics looked like i might have to do some restoring but got them cheap, got them and they were almost mint ( broken  brakewheel or missing coupler was all ). Also saw a wheathered bachmane oldtimer box, the ones you can pick up for $2.00 at your local train show go for over $40.00. Also saw a well done model power coaling station go for over $200.00 ( sometimes what I just look at is as much fun as bidding and winning ).

There .... see ? Through all this publicity, the guy actually got another bid !!! The trucks and couplers are probably worth the buck-fifty .... it's the shipping that kills it !!!  Laugh [(-D]

IF anyone here wins it - you gotta post some pics, I'd love to see it.
