There was a good article in RMC on modelling the NH C-Liners (5-axle) using a P2K PA truck and grafting the frame section for the truck mount onto the P1K C-Liner.

I am using this method to model 2 pairs of AB units for CN.

I'm with the guys who already posted! Would love to see the 5 axel C-Liners, also a B unit in both 4 axel & 5 axel. A B-unit with a sound board & good/large speaker would realy set off the set.

The units that Life Like produced, were primarily intended for freight, but the 5 axle units had a rather large and very heavy steam generator in the rear of the locomotive and required the 5th axle to support the extra weight. According to the book by TLC Pubs entitled NEW YORK CENTRAL SYSTEM DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES, the two versions were the same length but horse pwr ratings were considerably differant. The 4 axle unit used a 1600, 2000 & 2400 horse pwr prime movers, the 5 axle unit used only the 2000 and 2400 horse pwr prime movers. In addition, nine (9) gear ratios were offered, on both. According to Kalmbachs Diesel book, only 165 were ever sold. A lot more info on these great locomotives, can be had in the book called C-LINERS by David R. Sweetland. It's sold by Withers Publishing. Just to add more info, the CN 5 axle c-liners were 1600 hp. Fairbanks Morse would sell you any horsepower/axle combo needed, but not every model offered was produced. CPA16-5 would be this A unit. (C-liner,Passenger, A unit, 1600hp, 5 axle) and they had 5 axle B units as well!!!

I know that in this day and age this is sacraligious, but you can build or kitbash what you want. I built an A-A set from AHM/Model Power bodies and had to scrathbuild the frame. A week later the Protos came out. It's not difficult and is fun. Also, you have a unique piece of equipment.

At least you finished yours!!! belive me, I had the chassis made, with athearn PA truck on the rear, c-liner side frames for the front, the bodies striped of cast on rivits and grabs, and as soon as I was ready to paint, out come those perfect models! building the 5 axle c-liner would not be difficult with the parts from existing life like models, I just thought it would be nice and easy for them to do it! being a Fairbanks Morse nut, I've suffered through the "dark ages". When Athearn came out with the Trainmaster, I did quite a bit of kit bashing. Nowadays, we have it so good!!

I always intended to do this conversion and in fact laid in a supply of AHM/Rivarossi C Liners (This is before the P2K version came out -- long before) and what is interesting is that over the years the AHM/Rivarossi Fairbanks Morse trucks went from being incorrect to pretty accurate back to being incorrect again. Very odd!

I did the six axle C-Liner kitbash using the AHM model and an Athearn PA truck way back in 1986. I submitted an article to MR at the time and they did publish it - 13 years later, in their April 1999 issue. This was not too long before the Life Like C-Liner models came out.
