I would define
early
as far as Diesel electric locomotives as being built prior to World War II. On that basis, it'd be a tossup between the VO1000 from Baldwin or the RS1 from ALCo. But, I suppose I'd really prefer boxcabs, such as LIRR 401 or CNJ 1000..[8D][8D]

Actually I prefer the Alco RS 3,but not listed so took 2nd choice Alco PAPB

EMD BL2 and the Alco RS-1. The original Road Switchers, and two of the nicest looking loco's ever built.

Interesting choices - they actually span 30 years. The FT's date back to 1939, while the CF7's were built in the seventies! [:)]
I'll vote for an "other" that is fairly early - MLW's RS18, circa 1957.
