I voted for the E series. Those are far better than any other diesels I've seen (especially the early early models of the late 30's models) along with early diesel streamliners (And by the way, when was the last time you saw an M-10000 model or an E1?) .

Victorian Railways B Class (Clyde/EMD model ML2)

This loco was the second diesel mainline loco derived from the F7 for Australian conditions and apart from having 6 all powered axles it featured 2 Bulldog noses. It appeared at about the same time as the SD7 & may have been partly responsible for that loco's developement.

I have 3 F-7 ABB or ABA models. I have only one of any other; so I voted at the train shop.

Well, everything on the list is first-gen diesels,although the CF7's are rebuilds.

But the selection is a bit odd. Where's the RS's, The Fairbanks-Morse H15-44 and H-16-44's, the EMD BL-2, Alco FA's, Baldwin baby-faces, any of the Diesel switchers? It's got obscure locos' (how many DL-110's were even built), but not common ones (RS-3 anyone?)

Third_rail's definition of "early" as pre-WW2 is sensible enough, though my original vote varied from that. Given his definition, I'd say the NW2 or the S1. Cute li'l critters.

I voted for the F7. I can still remember the Chessie using them in freight service (in the mid-80s!) in and around Pittsburgh, PA.

Since the SD7 tain't there, I'll go with the good ol' F7. I loved sitting next to the GN mainline in the Flathead Valley back in the 50's and watch those GN freights tear by with hoards of Fs on 'em.[8D]

I would define early as far as Diesel electric locomotives as being built prior to World War II. On that basis, it'd be a tossup between the VO1000 from Baldwin or the RS1 from ALCo. But, I suppose I'd really prefer boxcabs, such as LIRR 401 or CNJ 1000..[8D][8D]
