Interesting choices - they actually span 30 years. The FT's date back to 1939, while the CF7's were built in the seventies! [:)]

I'll vote for an "other" that is fairly early - MLW's RS18, circa 1957.

EMD BL2 and the Alco RS-1. The original Road Switchers, and two of the nicest looking loco's ever built.

I would define early as far as Diesel electric locomotives as being built prior to World War II. On that basis, it'd be a tossup between the VO1000 from Baldwin or the RS1 from ALCo. But, I suppose I'd really prefer boxcabs, such as LIRR 401 or CNJ 1000..[8D][8D]

Since the SD7 tain't there, I'll go with the good ol' F7. I loved sitting next to the GN mainline in the Flathead Valley back in the 50's and watch those GN freights tear by with hoards of Fs on 'em.[8D]

Well,not a very fair poll..[:0][:D] You forgot to add the GP9[:(] .[;)] [:D] So I voted for the GP7 instead.[:D] I also like the RS1 and GP38/38-2...The SD7/9 was my favorites also.

I voted for the F7. I can still remember the Chessie using them in freight service (in the mid-80s!) in and around Pittsburgh, PA.

QUOTE: the SD90 is not an early diesel!!!!

Neither are most of the models in the list. The CF7 is a 1970's rebuild - hardly "early".

Third_rail's definition of "early" as pre-WW2 is sensible enough, though my original vote varied from that. Given his definition, I'd say the NW2 or the S1. Cute li'l critters.
