Model railroading a boring hobby ?...
Posted by Tracklayer on Monday, January 23, 2006 2:22 PM
I was told today by a girl that I've been interested in for a while now that model railroading was one of the most boring hobbies on earth, and that we (model railroaders) go to so much trouble and expense just so we can sit and watch our trains go around and around the track... She said she could think of a lot of better ways to spend her time (yea, like at the mall blowing money shopping!...). She doesn't like my dogs, guns or the Three Stooges either... I just wonder what kind of guy she's looking for - if a guy at all... (Sorry, but I couldn't resist saying that.) It's too bad though because she's really cute.
Oh well. There's plenty more fish in the sea.

There are more important things than railroads, guns, etc. My wife thinks so, but she is willing to negotiate. Don't give up until you know how well she negotiates.

Hi Chip. She said her dad was a model railroader when she was a kid, and that he spent all his time messing with his trians and layout, but little or no time with the family.

YOu must compromise if you are realy that interested in her. Not having any Idea of your ages, us old folks will take the wife, girl friend or mistress (not all 3 at the same time!) to a train show in a nice out of town location. You take her to the mall or movies or show and you then can go to the train show. expensive but simple.
You need to get an understanding of what she likes and then you can negotiate a plan to enjoy what she wants and what you want.
Now in my case it was simple my ex wife did not like trains or classic cars that is why she is the EX-WIFE!
My wife and I now have a great understanding about her and my hobby. She helps me paint the people and buildings and I help her redo the house or garden.
It is all in the plan of life.

Tough one! Deep festering wounds of childhood loss of fathers attention. You could try the "playing with trains would be therapy" argument?

Tracklayer, would it help to ask her, outright, if your passion for toy trains is a problem for her? You could approach the subject by acknowledging that a hobby that holds an intense interest could become a problem if it took up a lot of time, and that you would not be happy to find that you were allowing it to come between you and someone you care for very much. That would be an overt signal that you are A. alert to her concern since she has a history with the hobby, and B. that you value her friendship enough to be willing to temper your commitment somewhat. If she knows you can say those things with conviction, she knows that she will always count with you when "push comes to shove."

No person, let alone a woman, wants to be saddled with someone who insists on having all things his/her way.

Just a thought. I hope you can salvage this if she is otherwise a keeper.

I admit that in her opinion, I'm probably very immature for being 42. So maybe it's better things haven't gone any farther than they have. I'm happy with my life just as it is-immaturity, trains, dogs, guns, Three Stooges and all!.

I started to get my wife intersested in model railroading (we're 27 and 26 years old, by the way) by having her help on the scenery and such, as somthing we could do together in the evening. It was working great until I brought her to the hobby shop and spent $500 on one small bag of equipment. Now her only involvement in the hobby is to watch for new things to appear on the layout and ask how much they cost! ( lesson- never take your wife to a hobby shop if you plan on buying somthing more than $5.00)

VIDEO GAMES ARE WHAT IS BORING! Not model railroading. Average age of a video game player is 30. Wow the grown men beating out the kids.

Thanks anyway selector, but I think she brought all of this up because it was her way of saying we have nothing in common, and when I really think about it, we don't... I wouldn't be happy trying to live up to her standards. She's looking for a guy that she can dominate and enslave, and I'm not going to be her boy... I really shouldn't have said anything about any of this, but I was ticked off - still am.

Dump & Run, & Run fast...

37?... Oh boy, hard to say with conviction but based on my past experiences, I hate to say but I dont think she's gonna change for anyone in anyway whatsoever. Doesnt like ANY of your interests ? Very bad... It will end one of two ways, she dumps you because of your boring hobbies...or you will have to dump every interest you have and only do things she approves of....now who will be bored out of their minds, eh? Think about it... I see little chance to find a balance here if she's as one sided as it sounds. I've been down a road like this in the deep dark past, if she's not tolerent of your interests now, she never will be. I'm really surprised though that she doesnt consider your hobby a possible bridge to help with connecting with her kids, thats another big warning sign if she hasnt considered letting her kids get involved if they wanted to.

My wife has been tolerent of my hobbies, and PS, she doesnt care for the 3 stooges either but at least she doesnt mind me watching them.

Doesnt like dogs? Sheeesh![V]

PS PS just read the "dad" thing, Oh boy that really screws you...that really torpedoes keeping your hobby in any kind of relationship.

   Have fun with your trains

Giving up things you care about for a woman just because she's "cute" is a recipie for a life of misery.

Be exactly who you are and persue your interests in all aspect of your life. If you are yourself you will drive away the people you don't need to have around and attract people who like you for who you are and like the things you do. Life is both too short and too long to spend with any less than the very best.

I've got another one for you vsmith. About eleven years ago, I met a girl that had moved down here to Texas from Queens New York. We hit it off great at first, then the next thing you know she starts picking me to pieces. First she didn't like the fact that I drove a Chevy truck instead of a luxury car, then she didn't like the idea that I had such a large gun collection, then she didn't like any of the movies or anything I liked. Finally one day the spit hit the fan and we had it out, and when all was said and done, I not only found out that she didn't like anything about me, but had been seeing another guy behind my back and was pregnant by him... This girl that I was talking about that made me so mad today reminds me so much of that little witch it's not even funny. And by the way, the one from NY had two kids also, and didn't want them getting into "my dead end hobbies"...

I really have the luck with women don't I...

I "HAD" a wife who hated trains. Notice the word HAD! When I meet a woman I show her my hobby, watch her expression, and her comments. Woman are a dime a dozen, finding one you are really compatitible with is another story.

"This above all: To thine own self be true."

Some people think Shakespeare is boring, too, but there are lots of lessons to be learned. Or, maybe this bar joke is more to your liking:

"Just remember, now matter how cute she is, that the only reason she's even talking with you is some other guy got sick of putting up with her."

So, stick to the trains, guns, dawgs 'n' Stooges. A man can't ask for better friends.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

How can some one not like chevy trucks and guns? I love both and Bows too and fishing and trains and model railroading and NASCAR and .... well this list is long and my wife is very tolerant of my hobbies. She looks at it this way: I could be going to the bar everynight getting drunk spending all my money drinking it away or be in the back room working on my layout or at my desk building a new model and home safe. Same applied to my R/C car racing only she liked to watch the races so she came with me to the track. This and most other hobbies are expesive but so is her shopping sprees with your credit cards, and they wonder why you get mad at them for that? So get in the chevy put the rifle or bow in the back some food and warm clothes and go hunting and on the way home buy a new loco or 3 and tell her she has to live with it because you bagged a deer and you will have food for the whole winter now (hope she likes deer) and that will save on money so she can go shopping. There compromise!

maybe [:P]

I think lie between a man and his wife is a game. She gets wat she wants and I get my toys. Railroad, guns, Corvette, wood working eqip., you know toys. It's worked for 37 years now, so I'm sticking with it.

If your girl (with baggage) doesn"t want to play, take your loco and go home.

I had one about five years ago named Jennifer that I now very much regret not hanging onto... She wasn't what you might call a real attractive girl, but she had a heart of gold and thought I hung the moon. She was four years younger than me, tall, thin, dark headed and needed braces really bad. At the time, I didn't take her seriously, and gave her a bad time about her looks. Finally after several months, she got sick of being picked on by me all the time and stopped coming around. I never told anyone, but I really missed her for a long time, and wanted to tell her how sorry I was for being a jerk, but my pride wouldn't let me. Live and learn, live and learn, live and learn...

A lot of people think model trains are boring - plus a lot of other hobbies. My wife isn't really interested in model trains but encourages me with it becuase she knows that I enjoy it. She is into scrapbooking and I don't find it that interesting but she enjoys it so I encourage her in her hobby.
