That is a very good scheme Kevin. Dingoix, everything you posted looks good. Like you I think we are the only ones modeling IC in the present. I have started working on my layout.

I printed out the "present" IC roster from your site and i think i'll number my gp38-2's 9600 & 9601 when i get them. And when i get Atlas DASH 8 's they will be numbered 9000 and up- the first one i get will be 9001 the next one 9002 and so on. - now that I'm freelancing i could get the IC trainline GP9m but i doubt i will because it's too old to still be in service. (i've gotta stay modern like the UTAH BELT)- I'm going to try to order those decals next week. I will probobly order the Rock Island covered hopper with the decals.

i just got an idea- i forgot about these IC trailers http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATH5613 i could use those for containers on intermodal well car if i didn't completely assemble them. Also which flatcar might they go on? Are they freestanding or do the need one of those special flatcars with the "stands" that the front of the trailers sit on?

I have IC trailers. They have silver and orange with a pig on them. Fully assembled you can put them in all purpose well cars( these hold containers and trailers ) and on 89' pig flats.

According to Athearns site it's a kit (but i could be wrong) what I was thinking was using it as a intermodal container but not putting the bottom on the trailer. But It'd be cool as a trailer too. Then i could get this well car. http://www.discounttrainsonline.com/dto/item932-3945.html But i've never seen trailers in a well car- that might look odd.

I have one of those well cars. I see trailers in well cars a lot. They look fine. the look weird with two 20' trailers in one well car though. The trailers look like they are a kit.

Thanks, Instead of the RI hopper I'll get the Walthers well car and the IC trailers when i get my decals. A GP10 or GP11 might be hard to find. I don't know of one currently being produced. -I was looking for IC stuff and this is the only IC open hopper i can find (except for that tiny Walthers(?) one)

I test-painted a gondola today. One side was flat black and the other side was gloss black. I decided I will use gloss black for my DEATH STAR engines to get the look of a recently rebuilt and repainted engine. I'm not sure how that would look if i used it to paint over the decals on a NS DASH 8.

I decided when i add to my layout (hopefully in a month) that I'm going to have an inermodal yard. Which means I need even more turnouts and track. so i can't get all the engines i wanted this year. The reason I'm worried if i paint over the NS decals on an engine is that my paint will be too shiny. (but i guess i could dull it with some flat-black if i needed)

Just say that IC just bought it from NS and it is a new patch. Intermodal yards are good. I will have one on my next layout, AKA the big one.

icmr,
There has never been a production model of the GP10 or GP11. About a year ago I seen one at a train show here in Illinois, it was a custom build runner built from a P2K GP9 that had been chopped, with all the details that make the GP10. The asking price was over $250, I walked away from it. I have seen a few others over the years, but they were all custome built runners. One guy I talked to told me the number of hours he had in building one and what was involved. It was about 6 months ago on ebay I seen one, it went for over $150, I stopped bidding at $100. Now that I think about it, I seen one in brass once too!

Yes, i will say the DASH 8 is a patch- IC couldn't have bought a brand-new DASH 8 in 2006 anyway. My int. yard will be 3 or 4 tracks each one 3' to 5' long. Hopefully enough to hold all the TOWC (trailer-on-well-car) and/or double stack cars i hope to get.

I guess I will get started on building a GP10 then. That is a high price for a GP10. That is true that IC couldnt buy a new Dash 8. I guess I didnt think of that. That is how long my yard tracks are going to be on my layout.

but you did help, i didn't realize that if it's a DASH 8 it would have to be a secondhand unit. What are you going to build a GP10 out of?

icmr,
I noticed this on ebay the other day that someone had a GP9M in the ICG orange and white paint, guess they are producing this now. It was a brand new engine for a buy it now of $27.50 with $7.00 shipping. This engine would make a perfect victim for doing a GP10, since it is already painted. You would have to make allot of hand made detail parts to get it to look like the GP10, but it can be done. I been kicking around the idea for a few years about building one, but my painting skills are not that good. I lean more to repair work and fabricating of drive systems and remotoring. You could also use a P2K and sacrifice it to convert it into the GP10, requires cutting down the nose and body work then. I own several of the GP9M's in the black and white paint with the deathstar on the front that Walthers made, at the present these loco's or gone, you see one pop up on Ebay or at train shows, not often though.
