So Marty, what are your scenery tools, I would imagine a bobcat? ATV's? What do you use for ballast, I was daydreaming about a GR layout and the ballast popped in my mind.

Almost like real railroading.

I love your sig photo, steel mills would be great outdoors.
You don't need all 2 acres. I live on 4 and use one corner. BUT I would do it differently if i had time.
Around the wall (yard) type so I don't have to climb all over with the mower.

Ballast started out on the U.P. mainline as #2 cherry chicken grit.
The old GN or high line is bottom ash from the coal plant.
And many sidings is lime stone screening which looks like gravel which is used alot on sidings in this area.
When I became a "garden RRer" I studied GRRing. Then I realized my misstake and went back to studing 1:1 RRing. My favorite mags are ,
TRAINS and CTC Board Illustrated
Those have great modeling, weathering and RR design in them. Most folks just don't know it.
To model you must study the 1:1 not someone elses stuff. (Thats not saying its bad)

Even to take a photo I look at the angel, lighting and whats in the photo when shoting my out door RR.
I know very little about who makes what, Alco, EMD etc , and this engines is this or that, BUT I know what a RR looks like and how to build it.
Does that make since????

You have to hide part of the people to make it look more real.

I to love C&NW BUT, U.P. bought them out so I don't have many of the units.
C&NW weathers really well.
This -9 just came out of the weathering bag in this shot.

Note that the engineer is removed and the shades closed because this unit never runs the lead any more.
I just put my locos in a big bag with grim, dust and coal and shake it well and they come out perfect.


(thats a joke, mostly use spray cans ,I never mastered an air brush)

I don't mind.
Remember that size does NOT matter, its how well you use what you have .
This is my 4th outdoor model railroad. We bought this acreage just for the trains and our 4 boys.
Its 5 years old.
The lower main is around 460ft, high line around 440 ft then add sidings and passing tracks.
We run 40 to 60 car trains.
On an open house we can run around 6 trains at a time if everyone is watching their stuff.
The lower main is fairly level to run live steam if they show up.
Its the same thought as i had in HO. One main with large curves and level track, then a mountain sub div .
The yards is the storage area in the shop.
LS trains is a pain to store.

You know , there seems to be alot of great RRs here on the forums .
Now I'm just visiting but I'd love to see you share some real "action" shots of your model railroad.
I don't want to step on any toes, but I'd like to place a challenge for this next weekends photo thread ; and you all taking action shots.
I'd love to give you a couple of tips and show you my action shots on a new thread.
Is that alright to do?
Or is someone like a moderator in charge of that?

I am up for the challange and I am sure many others are, and if you have your own tips, by all means post them. I want to see more of that layout you have, any chance you have a track plan you could post, and maybe describe your battery/throttle method? I would like to know how you MU the units, is there something like DCC in your type etc. Knowing a bit about the GR, which in your case seems to oversimplify it, is just plain great to know.

you asked alot of questions. I wish you lived close because seeing is the best way to understand something. Thats one of the reasons I use photos so much, its better than a thousand words.
Plus I don't type worth anything.
There are many ways to do things, NO one right way.
Maybe some time you can e-mail me and we can go over it.

Well I would send an email, but your profile doesn't allow [:(], but your right, I am totally intrigued (sp) with your setup. I have daydreamed many times about a modern outdoor layout. Yours is now my benchmark and goal to someday look towards. Doing N scale is great, but I can see my eye sight getting bad in the years to come, sort of a family tradition. All of mine are RC controled. The steam locos have the sound/RC/batt in the vandy tenders.
MY RDC is self contained also and is my traveling engine which visits other RRs around this great country of ours. I don't get to travel as much as i like with 3 boys still at home.

Heres one shot of the RC unit and batt in a 100 ton hopper.
I stopped using the 2nd car because it was not worth the trouble.

Now that is one step past scratch building. How many guys use a torch to put together a bridge? Great stuff!

Keep in mind, that my first 1:29 scale bridge was 30" long made out of wood.
I was very proud of that.
As I share with david, my first 1:29 scale RR was a circle in the dinning room with lego blocks. And that was when i had an attic full of HO trains the full width/ length of the house.
It all takes time. and,,,,,,,$$$$$$$$$
