Your Favorite Western Railroad

As a zookeeper I have to admit, I love the mountain goat herald on Great Northerns rolling stock, but then being a herpetologist has probably led to my love of trains in general. It's that long winding, sinuous similarity to those legless, loathesome creatures that I've devoted half a lifetime to studying. Believe I'll spend the second half learning about trains.

I voted -other- which I really mean "others" because I can't hang my answer on just one railroad in particular.
Mine would be Southern Pacific, Rio Grande, Santa Fe and Western Pacific.

I had to go with SP.

Living close to the coastline, they (SP) had Direct Traffic Control, aka DTC. Using a scanner, a railfan could hear the dispatcher giving out block authority. I'm also close enough where I could hear the dispatcher give blocks out on the old Saugas Line.

I can't resist the joke.....SP for Southern Pacific or Super Power.

My favorite Western road has always been GN. Especially the electric zone between Skykomish and Wenatchee with Z-1s,Y-1s, and of course the "coast to coast" huge W-1. Their steamers with Belpaire fireboxes in the Glacier Park colors was spectacular as was their color scheme on the diesels and "sparkers."

My second choice would be Espee. . . .always liked the flat-face AC-4.

Without a doubt the Canadian Pacific IS the worlds best NORTH of the 49th!
The Spiral Tunnels, Rogers Pass, not to mention the Fraser River Gorge!
Amazing what they did in the late 1800's!!! Selkirks, Royal Hudsons, 3100/3101, 9000, the list goes on and on...

As for SOUTH of the 49th, well my opinion is equally divided between the two roads I model - The Milwaukee Pacific Extension vs. the Rio Grande. The Milwaukee's Electric crossing of the Rockies and Snoqualmie, vs. the Rio Grande's crossing THROUGH the Rockies via Tennessee Pass + Royal Gorge / Moffat Tunnel with that climb outta Denver - Jaw droppers each and every one.

Anything narrow gauge in Colorado that's still hauling passengers, even if they're all pushing shutters and record buttons, and wearing funny clothes and too much sunblock lotion! That kind of railroadin' is really fun!
