jeez and these WERE NOT shortlines. i am in a club that models the katy but i model the santa fe premerger modern era.

if nobody heard of these roads i suggest you get a boom and read on them as they have very interesting histories in themselves

Anything narrow gauge in Colorado that's still hauling passengers, even if they're all pushing shutters and record buttons, and wearing funny clothes and too much sunblock lotion! That kind of railroadin' is really fun!

Since I only get one choice, I guess I'd have to go with Santa Fe - not that I'm a great fan of that line, but it seems that I have more Santa Fe locos and rolling stock than any other road...

Without a doubt the Canadian Pacific IS the worlds best NORTH of the 49th!
The Spiral Tunnels, Rogers Pass, not to mention the Fraser River Gorge!
Amazing what they did in the late 1800's!!! Selkirks, Royal Hudsons, 3100/3101, 9000, the list goes on and on...
Long Live the Golden Beaver!
[bow]
As for SOUTH of the 49th, well my opinion is equally divided between the two roads I model - The Milwaukee Pacific Extension vs. the Rio Grande. The Milwaukee's Electric crossing of the Rockies and Snoqualmie, vs. the Rio Grande's crossing THROUGH the Rockies via Tennessee Pass + Royal Gorge / Moffat Tunnel with that climb outta Denver - Jaw droppers each and every one.
[soapbox]
AS FOR THE REST......
-------------------------------
<> SP, Uncle Pete - you gotta be kidding me RIGHT!?!
<> The NP and GN - OK - they were awesome routes with great trains.
<> SF - Warbonnets were classics, but they chickened out and went around the mountains just like the SP!
<> WP, well the Keddie bridges and the run into the Bay area were awesome, but they were just 1 piece of the greater Zepher route - not a REAL transcon (LIKE THE CPR!)

My favorite Western road has always been GN. Especially the electric zone between Skykomish and Wenatchee with Z-1s,Y-1s, and of course the "coast to coast" huge W-1. Their steamers with Belpaire fireboxes in the Glacier Park colors was spectacular as was their color scheme on the diesels and "sparkers."

My second choice would be Espee. . . .always liked the flat-face AC-4.

I would have to say Union Pacific, because of their fleet of turbines. Because everyone knows that I love turbines.[:D]

Yes, I guess I could have included a couple railroads a little farther East, but I was shooting for railroads east of the Mississippi River.

I had to go with SP.

Living close to the coastline, they (SP) had Direct Traffic Control, aka DTC. Using a scanner, a railfan could hear the dispatcher giving out block authority. I'm also close enough where I could hear the dispatcher give blocks out on the old Saugas Line.

I can't resist the joke.....SP for Southern Pacific or Super Power.

How about the Camas Prairie? The Nez Perce? The SP&S? And the list goes on. Not all of us are enamored of the larger railroad companies. It is easier to find a decent small road to model, there is a better chance of truly representing the railroad, IMHO.

Nothing against the big boys on the block, they certainly do have their place. But the little guys are interesting as well.

That's smoke up your pant leg, steam is different.

Tom

There are too many shortlines to put on there.

THANK YOU! Finally someone knows what I'm talking about. There are just to many shortlines! (Nothing against them though, I love them!)

I voted -other- which I really mean "others" because I can't hang my answer on just one railroad in particular.
Mine would be Southern Pacific, Rio Grande, Santa Fe and Western Pacific.

As a zookeeper I have to admit, I love the mountain goat herald on Great Northerns rolling stock, but then being a herpetologist has probably led to my love of trains in general. It's that long winding, sinuous similarity to those legless, loathesome creatures that I've devoted half a lifetime to studying. Believe I'll spend the second half learning about trains.
