Of course much of what is on here is fluff . . . and that is OK!!! I come here to ask questions and get answers and hopefully to contribute my [2c] and help someone else from time to time. I don't participate in a lot of the fluff, but sometimes I do and it is interesting and fun. There are modelers on this forum af ALL levels, interests, and walks of life. This is a community centered around a hobby--it is supposed to be fun. If you don't like the fluf, don't read or participate in it. There is no reason to take the fluff away from those who enjoy it and even benefit from it.

As Jimmy Buffett has said many times, "If we weren't all crazy, we would go insane"!

Now, we must all go back to being totally serious. Yeh, like that's going to happen!

It's all in the definition...but if we didn't have a sense of humor when dealing with some of these topics (no, not this one!) we might lose interest. So fluff, I'd say good in moderation.

Mark,
Now look what you've done. (I''m smiling very large here.) You have turned good hardworking model railroaders into fluffy, bubbling, hilariously amusing people just like you and me. I LIKED THIS POST. It was something I was wondering myself. I answer those I can and pass on the others that don't apply. I always try to help the newbies if I can but most who answer them have already said what I was going to. Oh well, it's always nice to read and learn here. Ain't it great!!

It's been a long winter! Time for:

"FLUFF Busters" as there is plenty of Fluff under the Train Table!

Define Fluff????? .....it's the sound of a steam engine approaching ...you know ...fluff, fluff, fluff., fluff...and then when it gets closer it sounds like chuff, chuff, chuff, chuff....and if you are too near the tracks when it comes barreling around the curve and you have to run for it you will go puff, puff, puff, puff.....and I guess this post is enough, enough, enough, enough [:)]

Oh, well. I'm glad we got some definitions on record. Now, to the original question, I will answer no, this forum is not fluff. I'd hate to think I'm spending so many hours each day on fluff.

Anyway, while trevor was consulting Webster, I was checking to see what a higher power had to say about fluff. Mark Twain's advice to members of this forum:
"I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English - it is the modern way and the best way. Stick to it; don't let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in."

Good advice and someday I'll heed it.

Hobbies are the fluff of life. It would truly be a miserable place to be if everything had to be serious all the time. This hobby is for relaxing and having fun - whatever that may be for you: running trains; scratchbuilding superdetailled models; putting Athearn blue box kits together; upgrading that old LifeLike Boxcar so it runs better, looks good, and costs more than an Accurail; etc.

`Nice? It's the only thing,' said the Water Rat solemnly, as he leant forward to his throttle. `Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing -- absolute nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about with trains. Simply messing,' he went on dreamily: `messing -- about -- with -- trains; messing -- -- '

(with apologies to Kenneth Grahame, who would understand)
Enjoy

Well, there is a lot of fluff that I don't read. Things like, "What kind of work do you do?" or
"What music do you listen to?" and other similar so called polls that have shown up on here. To me they don't have anything to do with model railroading and, in some cases, are nobody else's business. On the other hand several of our participants seem to enjoy that kind of thing so why not ? Some of the legimate questions are posted by individuals who have just entered the hobby. They will ask something entirely different than the hobbiest who is trying to figure out how to adjust the valve gear on a Pennsy T-1 Duplex, for example. It's a hobby and this forum attracks all levels of interest and ability. Sometimes I see a quesiton posted that could have been answered by reading the papers that came in the box and that tends to irritate me, but to each his own.

Cheers,

Ed

Weeeeellllllll........in MY family, 'fluff' means ...um... to forcefully expel flatus from the lower alimentary tract...if you catch my drift. Some of the posts in this forum are of the brain-fluff type, to be sure, but how improverished would our lives be without either form?!

Hmmm?

I don't think I would want to without "someone itchin' for a fight" coming back at me. One man's question is another man's fluff. That's what's interesting about this thread and the forum in general.

Fluff...The state at which all solid matter becomes un-hard, like cotten, a big furry dog, snow, all your wifes good linens after she's dried them with downy, your girl friend when she's feeling in that special way after a great date and she says, care for a night cap????? Oh boy...[:D] You know, Fluffy

There is fluff on this forum but that doesn't mean that the forum is fluff. Personally I think the off-topic threads actually contribute to the friendly atmosphere of this forum that the others lack.
