My doctor told me, at the time I was diagnosed with diabetes, that Dr Pepper was about the worst thing I could consume.  Being a Scotsman, I finished the cans I had but never bought another, nor any carbonated soft drink.  And, I discovered that I don't miss it at all.

My wife likes her Sodastream. Tap water with or without ice carbonated by the Sodastream with a squeeze of lemon or lime. It is actually very refreshing and does no harm.

A Slurpee can contain 10 times the maximum amount of sugar you should consume in a day and will so completely overwhelm your liver and pancreas it can take days to get back to normal. In the meantime, all those toxins build up in your body creating even more havoc which will eventually lead to some nasty diseases.

It boggles the mind when I see two guys arguing over what brand or weight of oil they should be putting in their car while pounding back soda pop or a Slurpee.

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, naturally found in milk, including human milk.

The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board's Recommended Dietary Allowances per day for adults is 33 mg/kg body weight.

Good sources of phenylalanine include eggs, chicken, beef, milk, and soybeans.

When a person's body metabolizes certain sweeteners, phenylalanine is produced.

A small group of people have a genetic inability to metabolize phenylalanine.  This small group of people are called Phenylketonurics.

Since some foods contain substances that will produce phenylalanine, the labels carry the wording, "Phenylketonurics:  Contains phenylalanine".

Thanks to Lion, after I looked this up, I now know that phenylalanine is essential for good health, which is more than I knew for the past seventy years.

Hi Everyone,

I would submit that many of the warning labels we see, especially the obnoxious ones, are there for liability issues.  Folks these days file lawsuits on a whim.  Do you really need a warning that says, "the beverage you are about to enjoy is extremely hot."  A woman sued McDonald's for 4 mil and won after being scalded by their coffee that spilled on her lap.  Her attorneys claimed that she hadn't been warned.  So, hence the warnings.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good morning, diners.  This past week while we were out of town, I didn't get my daily dose -- so I'll have bacon, eggs, and black coffee.

I've said it before, it's nice to get away, and it's nice get home.  We are both completely worn out after babysitting.

It's also nice to use my laptop again.  Trying to read and respond to the forum's posts on my phone is just difficult for me.

Lion, what's going on?  You've switched from cats to dragons?  I prefer cats!

Kevin and Mike, I hope everything is going OK with the you and the virus.  Let us know.

David, I might have missed it if you reported, but I hope your latest cruise went well.

Ray, sad story of your wife's illness.  Even after all these years, I know it is painful to remember.

Ed, like your work with hazadous materials, there are so many things that were done in the past without knowing.  I'm wondering what will be discovered in the future about what we deal with today.

MLC, that's too bad about the job.  I hope it works out -- let us know.

Dave, White Out!  I have some school student stories about White Out that I had to deal with.  Word processors took away a lot of headaches concerning students and White Out!  At one time I seriously considered banning White Out from the school.

Bear, neat old advertisements.

I know I've not mentioned some of you here.  It's taking me a while to read through the posts I've missed the past days.

I hope everyone has a good day today.

Good morning from a wet and wind-blown NW PA.

Chloe - Bacon and eggs breakfast platter and a OJ please. Thanks.

Kevin & Mike - Hope you both are on the mend.

Weather - Went through two different Tornado Warnings after midnight, one from 1245-115am, then a second 'radar indicated' warned storm from 115-145am, one tornado touched down a few miles south of my place, the other potential one was further south. Watches were issued for the surrounding area from 2-7am.

My place had one limb ripped out of a big maple tree, and a flooded basement. (Glad the train room is upstairs!)

We also had three "Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts", and I had to look those up, as I had never seen those before. Defenition was those get issued once lightning frequency hits a certain threshold, as high frequency in lightning is a metric that helps them assess how severe a storm is, so something else they can watch for.

My only issue with the warnings - Zero local coverage by local news! NWS alert said area only, and to "tune to local news media" for further details, and local news media did not have further details. They only had a scrolling warning across the top of the screen, never broke in, and radio stations never interupted broadcasts.... Indifferent NBC affiliate stayed on a soccer match, with only a icon with the red polygons in the corner of the screen! ABC & Fox had a scrolling alert across the top of the screen, CBS across the bottom of the screen.

Both NBC and ABC affiliates stated on their website & app to go to Facebook for live weather covereage. Facebook coverage requires a "log-in" first, and I am not a FB member. So they were very helpful... Confused

Fortunately, it was not as bad as it could have been. But still....

Hope all are well, best wishes to those not, and hope all have a good day!

Got tired of eating bird eggs... Went for something more facinating. At least dragons can put up a bit of a fight. And if the Dragon is too big, the lion can simply walk away.

Good afternoon Diners.  Afternoon tea please, Janie.

John.  Our cruise was really great.  The Covid testing before getting to the port was very stressfull.  From then on everything  was wonderful.

Priority boarding because we were 'Princess Club Passengers.  On board before midday.  The lifeboat drill is now simplified.  Watch it on television then go to the lifeboat station to be checked in.  Simple.

Meals were 5 star.   Entertainment fantastic.  A really enjoyable cruise in good weather.

Roll on our next one.

Kevin and Mike.  I hope you are feeling much better.

Waiting for the rain to stop as we want to see a cruise ship that is in our local port.

Daughter, S.I.L.   and two grandchildren are in the sky on their way to New York.   They keep visiting NY.   I hope they keep returning.  Laugh

On the cruises I remember, our lifeboat drills were pretty basic.  We were told when they would be.  Our responsibility was to get our life vests from our cabins and assemble at our lifeboat station.  We were checked off, and that was it.  We were actually familiar with the lifeboats because they were also used to "tender" us from ship to shore in shallow ports where cruise ships couldn't dock.

Our food was also excellent.  Breakfast was the best.  I probably had Eggs Benedict 5 days out of seven.

The smaller ships, maybe 300 or so passengers, are our favorites.  We got to know the crew, and the Captain and senior officers greeted us like old friends on subsequent trips.  We were in one relatively small port one day when a Mouse Boat came in.  Even on land, we soon had enough of the crowds and returned to our own quiet and peaceful ship.

Kevin,   Get your back end in to be seen pronto.  There's a couple of oral treatments that significantly reduce the probabilities that it could get really nasty, but only if you begin them in the first five days.  Going through that in our house right now.  Plaxovid is the name of one of them [EDIT: Paxlovid].

Called my doctor on Friday, I asked if he could prescribe it over the phone. Was told that the Governor's office would not allow them to prescribe any more doses without review.

WHAT?

Went to a walk-in clinic on Saturday. The doctor there would not prescribe any medication because he said directions from the Governor's office regarding additional new Covid cases would not allow it. However, If I get bad enough I can still always go to the hospital.

WHAT?

So now in Florida, our Governor is directing medical prescriptions that could raise the reportec Covid rate, but save people's lives.

Last year, literally thousands of Canadians that had Winter residences in Florida made themselves full-time Florida residents. I'll bet they will be regretting that very soon.

If you are thinking of relocating to Florida, maybe you shouldn't.

I am feeling better.

Doesn't matter - very glad you're feeling better.  Keep track of your sweetie, though.  Miraculous recoveries doesn't necessarily mean the development of an iron constitution.

Now we gotta get Mike better.  Maybe the weekend storms coming across Lake Michigan zapped some of his symptoms or blew them away. Whistling

Got hooked up to the 5g Fiber Network here in the area.  Yep, 'puter is very, very fast!!!!  Haven't been able to get into the email part to switch that over to my computer yet so I am sort of in the middle of things.

Hoping to take a long drive with a friend sometime this week if the sun keeps shining.  We will likely drive along Lake Ontario and then stop for lunch or do that in reverse order.

Good morning, diners.  Bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, and coffee, please.

I love all the old advertisements.  I think it reminds me of growing up in the 1950s & 60s, when these ads were in every magazine.  They made travel look so fantastic.

David, I'm not sure what your favorite company is, but in our travels, Princess Cruises were our best experience.

John.   Princess Cruises are a firm favourite for us.   Though I tease Dawn on how great British Steam Navigation Company was in days gone. Old style liners  with an amazing atmosphere.

Kevin.   Good to hear you are on the mend.   Hopefully Mike will visit soon.

A number of Diners are missing.   A speedy return (if they wish)  is called for.

Hello diners. Just a quick check in. Starting to feel better here, but a little ways to go yet. I've been lucky compared to what some people have gone through. My wife got sick a day or two behind me. Loads of symptoms, but keeps testing negative. A similar thing happened to some friends of ours where their entire household had it and all kept testing negative on antigen tests. PCR tests showed them all to be positive. Where I've had the camper, she has taken our room and upstairs bathroom to quarantine in. Our kids get the rest of the house and are staying gone for the most part. Strategic use of fans to keep air moving in the right directions in the house to keep the rest of it as virus free as possible. My wife is also masking up 100% of the time in the house. The kids feel great (knock on wood).

It's funny as my wife will text me asking if I want to meet her out on the deck for a while. It feels like we're being sneaky about something. Kind of like being a teenager again.

We've been on Norwegian and Windstar cruises, where "we" is a variable.  The Norwegian ship was a cruise around the Hawaiian islands, and we used it mostly just for eating and sleeping.  I was amazed that a lot of passengers would get off the boat in the morning and board the bus to ... Walmart?  Or, they would take a package bus tour of the island that basically stopped at every souvenir shop.  We arranged for a rental car every day and did what WE wanted.  It seemed like a lot of passengers were just there to eat.  Some of them would literally have not fit through the door of our tiny cabin.

The Windstar ship was totally different.  These were Caribbean cruises on a small ship, 300 or so passengers.  The food was much better.  I would never take another large ship cruise.  I'm glad to have taken one big-ship cruise with my daughter when she was young, but from now on I will enjoy the quiet luxury of a small ship.

I should give a warning about a high-speed catamaran between Maine and Nova Scotia, now possibly defunct.  The ads and their website make it out to be like a luxury cruise, but it was really like being crammed into a big airplane.  Because it was a catamaran built for speed, the outer surface was not used, except for a tiny platform on the rear which was the smoking section.  Inside was set up like four large airplane cabins, each with a mandatory film being shown.  Food was a snack bar.  There was a noisy casino area, too.  Skip this one.
